A Guide to Online Gambling in Ireland

Gambling is a pastime as old as time itself and has had a significant impact on the cultural history of many countries in the modern world.

It seems that no matter how fast the world continues to upgrade its technology, the games and sports that have been around for centuries live on in the new age, integrated into the technological landscape with all the benefits this has the potential to bring.

Gambling is certainly one of these activities that has evolved alongside humans and their technology, and one of the countries in which the activity has a rich history in Ireland.

Known as a cultural home for horse racing and producing some of the best jockeys the world has ever seen, it’s no surprise that the Irish love to try their luck at any one of the many stakes on the line during a horse racing competition.

However, much like in other modern countries with an affinity for gambling, there is a new player on the block – online gambling.

While the aim of online gambling is to provide players with an experience that is familiar to their land-based gambling experiences, the online nature of it brings a whole new range of factors for lawmakers to consider, and hence, Ireland has specific laws for the regulation of the online gambling industry.

Read on to find out more about gambling online in Ireland and how to stay safe and within the law.

History of Irish Gambling

While under the rule of the English, gambling became an institutionalised part of Irish everyday life, as the success of horse racing in England had been easily transferrable to its colony of the time.

Such was the strength of influence from England at the time that betting on horse racing was adopted very quickly, and by the year 1751, there were over 400 separate locations in Ireland for horse racing, and punters could bet at every single one of them.

It wasn’t just horse racing that took off, too, as while under English rule all gambling remained largely unregulated, including card games and other games, a useful distraction for rich landowners that collected taxes for the colonisers.

Once Ireland became a free state in 1922, it got to work on a law that would outlaw illegal gambling, and the Betting Act was passed in 1926.

Current Online Gambling Law in Ireland

Thankfully for players looking to bet online in Ireland, it’s a long-established and well-regulated industry that is safe to participate in, as long as the company in question holds a license from the government under the Irish Gambling Act.

Players can also use services provided by companies licensed by approved regulators, such as the UK Gambling Commission, meaning Irish players have access to the best UK casino service providers too.

Future Changes to Irish Gambling Law

While there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of significant change coming for Online Gambling laws in Ireland, the rate at which the technology is expanding means it’s impossible to rule out amendments in the future.

The Gambling Control Bill of 2013 has been held in Parliament since that year and would bring in tougher regulations should the bill ever pass.

The GAA rolls out an anti-Bullying and Internet Safety Programme to 100 GAA clubs in 2022 in partnership with Google

The GAA, in partnership with Google, has launched its anti-bullying and internet safety programme to over 100 participating clubs from the GAA, Ladies Football and Camogie Associations in Ireland and Britain, targeted at the 9 – 12 years age group.

As part of the Gaelic Games, Give Respect – Get Respect initiative, this programme incorporates Google’s Be Internet Legends initiative, an existing free, online safety education programme for primary-age children helping them to become safe and confident explorers of the online world. The programme helps children bring the respect and values they learn on the field into their online interactions encompassing learnings and activities in the areas of anti-bullying, developing positive behaviour and staying safe online.

This programme mirrors the Give Respect – Get Respect initiative which promotes respecting fellow players, coaches, referees, opponents and officials; playing fair; treating others equally; setting an example; and creating an environment where children feel confident and comfortable to talk to a coach or adult if they have a concern.

Speaking at the launch the GAA President Larry McCarthy welcomed the involvement of the Gaelic Games Give Respect – Get Respect initiative in this programme. He said:

“This is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness around the need for young players to show respect for referees, fellow players, coaches and opponents, both on and off the field of play.

“It is the Association’s intention to further develop the ‘Respect Initiative’ over the period of our recently launched Strategic Plan and this Anti-Bullying and Internet Safety Programme will be supported and closely monitored.”

Speaking in Croke Park at the launch, Shane Nolan, Director, New Business Sales, EMEA, Google Ireland, said:

“At Google Ireland, we recognise the responsibility that we have as a company to protect and support the users of our products. We need to play our part in ensuring that the internet is an accessible resource to all and that it’s used in a positive way.  We are delighted to build upon our already successful partnership with the GAA to deliver the Be Internet Legends programme to even more clubs and children across the country. Google Ireland is committed to helping empower young people to act wisely, responsibly and safely all the while remaining confident explorers of the online world.”

Minister of State Jack Chambers TD speaking at the launch said:

“I am delighted to support and help launch this important initiative. Abuse of our players, coaches, referees and volunteers is unacceptable and must be called out – whether it occurs on the pitch, in the training grounds, up in the stands or online. This initiative underlines the commitment of the Gaelic Games family to tackling the scourge of bullying and to protect and safeguard all those who participate. The initiative equips young people to identify and learn how to respond to online abuse and bullying, with the learnings then applied to a sports setting. I congratulate the GAA and partners Google on this welcome and important initiative and look forward to it being rolled out to children in clubs across the country.”

Tech Review – X-Sense Wi-Fi smoke alarm. (XS03-WX)

I do not need to tell you every house should have a smoke alarm but they a super important and again no need to explain why, they come in all shapes and size and again cost differences are there they are now installed in all new builds and wired but this little guy is wireless and smart and works really well and I have put it to the test.

The design is simple and familiar and it is smaller than most out there, it is easy to set up and the app is simple to use too which we go through in the video review and a live sample of it in action, a stock image review will have no context which is becoming too common and just lazy so we go through all out tech hands on for better context.

How does this work.

It is simple, you get a battery with it, mount to wherever suits connect to the app and you are done, it is that simple.

What features do you get.

2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Connection – Most tech is this anyway

Easily connect this alarm to your X-Sense app via a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Then you can control the alarm afar and be warned about any emergencies.

Easy Installation

1-minute installation in any circumstance with our included accessories, adding an attractive twist to your home.

Loud 85 dB Buzzer

Be alerted to fire hazards through the detector’s loud 85-dB alarm with a flashing LED indicator.

Full App Control

Control your smoke alarm from your fingertips. You can activate the self-check function, check the battery level and enable timely notifications, all within the app.

Instant Notifications

See what’s going on in the app notifications and be alerted to any fire hazards as soon as possible.

Overall this is a great cost effective product so for example if you have a garden shed or storage area outside or similar you can use this product there or indeed just add it your home for some extra security.

AnyClip makes information available in videos with AI

The American-Israeli technology company AnyClip will have a stand at the International Technology Conference in Dublin on June 15 and 16, 2022 (Hall 4, Stand E23). The company, which has been active on the European market since the end of 2021, has developed a solution that for the first time makes it possible to fully exploit the data available in videos.

If you want to find something on the Internet, you search Google. If you want to find something in an Office document, you use the text search function. If you want to find something in a video, then … well, what do you actually do? Until now, you had to click your way through second intervals until you find the right place. At a time when information is increasingly stored in the form of videos, this is not particularly efficient. For short videos, this may not be a big deal. But for databases with hundreds, even thousands of videos – as they are commonplace in more and more companies today, this is simply impossible.

The AnyClip solution makes it possible to make the information contained in videos comprehensively accessible with just a few mouse clicks. And it does so with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). The cloud solution turns an ordinary video file into a highly intelligent medium. AnyClip allows users to search a video specifically, find the information it contains in just a few clicks, and share it with others at the same time. The solution can also automatically create short highlight summaries of videos that span several hours.

“Let’s take an example: imagine, for instance, that you had the ability to automatically search and summarize all recorded video conferences since the beginning of the Corona pandemic for the most important content with just one mouse click,” Michael Kummer, AnyClip managing director in the DACH region, explains the AnyClip principle. “Everything that is written, said and shown in a video becomes keyworded and searchable through AnyClip.”

Especially since the start of the Corona pandemic, the importance of video as a communication and storage medium has continued to grow. In Germany alone, millions of people work “remotely”: almost every briefing, every sales meeting, as well as training courses and continuing education, even onboarding measures mostly take place digitally via video. This is exactly where AnyClip comes in: The cloud solution makes the valuable information contained in videos accessible to all authorized users at any time.

Video highlights reduce time spent

But how does this automatic processing actually work? Imagine: A sales representative has a digital customer appointment. With the consent of all parties involved, the conversation is recorded. An authorized colleague wants to view the recording afterwards, but only a few sequences that are relevant to him. Watching the video in its entirety, which may take several hours, is not possible in everyday life; clicking through the video until you find what you are looking for would take far too long. With AnyClip, this process becomes as simple as a text search in a WORD document. A conversation that could last several hours is turned into a 10-minute highlights video, with all the individually selected data. The software filters the video content according to the parameters defined by the user. If desired, automatic subtitles can be added. The cloud solution can be used in German and English.

Know-how should not be lost

Using “GeniusWORK“, a fully integrated communication platform, the video data can be stored in a central location. The platform includes automatic content recognition and distribution and can be accessed on any device. Employees’ unique know-how can be stored there audiovisually and made available to selected users. Employees who leave the company, often having worked there for decades, record their unique special know-how on video. The saved videos can then, for instance, be made available to new employees as onboarding and training measures.

“The knowledge available in videos is a blank space in most companies,” Michael Kummer points out. “For the first time, AnyClip gives companies of all types comprehensive access to this information. AnyClip offers exactly the right technology to make visible the many valuable pieces of information that are also contained in older videos.” The information delivery through the video solution does not create additional staffing needs, Kummer says: “Whether corporate events, HR resources, or internal recordings, everything can be accessed in one central location without costing additional capacity.” GeniusWORK resides on a European cloud server and can be used on all types of devices.

One software, many applications

In addition to video on demand, live events or business-relevant content, such as documentation of verbal agreements, can also be uploaded to the platform. Furthermore, AnyClip users can, for example, use the “Zoom” video communication platform to record their meetings directly and upload them to GeniusWORK. Video access rights can be distributed individually.

Expanding business to the European market

Besides Munich, the company currently has offices in Tel Aviv, London, New York, and Los Angeles. With the establishment of the Munich office the first European office at the end of 2021, AnyClip has initiated a new phase of its global expansion. In the U.S., AnyClip achieved record revenue growth in 2021. This was in addition to a $47 million funding round. The company, which has experienced a significant upswing since the start of COVID-19, is ranked 5th in New York on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500™ list of fastest-growing companies in North America.

Trade show info

AnyClip will be in Hall 4 at stand E23 on both days of the show. There will also be a presentation with Michael Kummer on June 16 at 09:30 a.m. (Workshop Stage), where he will give a live demonstration of AnyClip’s features.

NTA has announced an agreement for 800 battery electric double decker buses.

.The National Transport Authority (NTA) has today announced an order for 120 double-deck battery-electric buses from Bamford Bus Company (trading as Wrightbus). These 120 buses are part of a framework agreement which provides for the procurement of up to 800 zero-emission battery-electric buses over a period of five years

The buses – Streetdeck Electroliner BEVs – will be manufactured and assembled at the Wrightbus facility in Galgorm, on the outskirts of Ballymena in Northern Ireland.

The framework agreement now in place between the NTA and Wrightbus has the potential to be the single biggest bus procurement in the history of the State. These will be the first battery-electric double-deck buses to be added to the national bus fleet in Ireland and their addition will deliver a significant uplift in the proportion of low- or zero-emission buses within that fleet.

This historic deal is a major component of the overall strategy to build a sustainable future by decarbonising the country’s PSO public transport fleet, and is in line with a number of key national policy directives including:

  • National Strategic Outcome 4 in the National Development Plan 2021 which provides for Sustainable Mobility through the delivery of greener and cleaner bus fleets;
  • Section 9.3.7 of the Climate Action Plan 2021 on the decarbonisation of public sector transport which says: ‘We will transition public bus fleets to zero emissions models though the renewal and expansion of the fleet, allowing for the full electrification of double-decker buses in Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Galway by 2035’;
  • Section 12.2.4 of NTA’s Draft GDA Transport Strategy on zero-emission buses which says: ‘2022 will see the introduction of fully electric single and double deck fleet and the ongoing conversion of bus depots to charge and maintain the new vehicle types’; and
  • Action 13 and 14 of the National Sustainable Mobility Action Plan 2022 which provide for the transition of PSO bus services in the Dublin metropolitan area, along with Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford to low/zero emission bus fleet.

As they incorporate a fully battery-electric powertrain, the buses will operate with zero tailpipe-emissions, which will contribute to a substantial improvement in air quality in the cities and towns in which they are deployed.

This initial order for 120 buses represents  an investment of some €80.4m.

Of the 120 buses currently on order, 100 are destined for use by Dublin Bus on PSO bus services within the Dublin Metropolitan Area and 20 are destined for use by Bus Éireann for use in the Limerick Metropolitan Area. Buses from future orders may also be used to operate PSO bus services in other parts of Ireland, including the metropolitan areas of Cork, Galway and Waterford.

Commissioning and training activities will get under way later this year, as will work on installing the necessary charging infrastructure. The first buses are expected to enter passenger service in 2023.

The buses will be outshopped in the green, white and yellow Transport For Ireland (TFI) livery which is in the course of being applied to all buses and coaches in the PSO fleet.

Passenger facilities onboard include:

  • seating for up to 65 passengers;
  • a permanent wheelchair space;
  • a dedicated area for the accommodation of a pram, pushchair or buggy;
  • prominent and distinctive priority seating;
  • high-definition real-time passenger information displays;
  • USB charging sockets; and
  • complimentary Wi-Fi.

Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan said:

We know that decarbonising transport is imperative, as part of our effort to tackle climate change. Public transport because it is shared mobility is already a far more sustainable and economical way of getting around, particularly compared to a private car that runs on fossil fuel, and the battery-electric buses that we are now ordering, will accelerate the transition to a zero-emission fleet.

“Going electric will reduce the carbon footprint of our public transport fleet, and will help us reach our long-term climate goals, as outlined in the Climate Action Plan. These new electric buses will also help reduce air pollution, improve public health and improve access to public transport for people of all abilities.

“I welcome today’s announcement and look forward to seeing cleaner and greener buses in operation in our cities”

Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority, Anne Graham said:

“The transition to a zero-emission bus fleet is a central component of our BusConnects project, and the procurement of these battery-electric buses represents a key milestone in that process.

“There is no doubt that people are looking to us to provide better, more sustainable transport alternatives in all areas, and it is incumbent on us as an Authority to respond to that demand in a positive way. In so doing, we will reduce the need for personal vehicles, making the quality of the air we breathe healthier for everyone.

“When it comes to taking climate action, we in the NTA want to play our part and we want to lead by example. We are doing that by transitioning our public transport fleet away from fossil fuel to zero emission technologies and as you see today we are making real progress. This process is already under way, and when complete in 2035 will result public transport emissions being massively reduced.”

Neil Collins, Managing Director of Wrightbus, said: “We are extremely proud of this historic deal, which is hugely significant for Ireland’s decarbonisation ambitions and for us here at Wrightbus.

“This deal further cements the reputation we have built in the zero-emission sector, and follows hot on the heels of historic deals in Australia and Germany. This shows our ambition to be at the forefront of the zero emission drive in cities, towns and rural areas  across the world.”
