The Morgan McKinley Quarterly Employment Monitor registered an overall 6.9% increase in the number of new professional job opportunities in Q3 2022 compared sequentially to the second quarter across all professional sectors. However, the monitor also recorded a decrease of -3.3% in the number of professionals actively seeking new job opportunities compared to the previous quarter.
The Morgan McKinley employment monitor measures the pulse of the Irish professional jobs market by tracking the number of new job vacancies and new candidates in the Republic of Ireland each quarter. In order to reflect the changing dynamics of the current employment market, Morgan McKinley are including both permanent and contract jobs in the employment monitor.
The latest monitor reveals that the housing and cost-of-living crises are having a major impact on hiring, with Dublin based companies particularly struggling to find talent due to limited accommodation. The market remains candidate driven as salaries continue to be under pressure across most sectors, pushed by inflation, skills shortages, and with candidates having multiple options to choose from. Flexible working remains a priority, with most candidates preferring a hybrid working model. Companies with fully onsite working models face deep challenges in staffing.
Trayc Keevans, Global FDI Director, Morgan McKinley Ireland, said:
“There has been a notable and sustained decline in the availability of emerging talent. The impact of this is being felt in the employment market with employers struggling to fill entry level and graduate positions as this talent cohort is emigrating due to the lack of housing and the cost-of-living crisis. Australia, UK, and Canada were the primary destinations for departing talent over the last quarter, followed by Singapore, Dubai, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands. Continental European locations like Spain, France and Germany have also proven popular with new graduates.
“The remaining talent at this level are not compromising on salary demands of up to 20% higher than current norms for entry-level and early-career qualified roles. Furthermore, these entry level roles are now also being filled with more experienced talent on higher salaries resulting in higher overall employment costs for businesses.
“Employment permits are being processed at almost double the rate of last year due to a tripling of government staff to reduce the processing times to the current run rate of 2-3 weeks. There is evidence that the largest proportion of these employment permits are going to professionals already in Ireland as companies are more confident that acquiring accommodation won’t be a barrier to their taking up the position. In addition, local relocation’s from the regions to Dublin and from Dublin to regional cities have been proving difficult. Employers are becoming more hesitant to offer a position to someone situated outside of their core location where they have an on-site or a hybrid working model in place.
“The financial services sector has seen an overall uptick in roles in the past quarter, with demand outweighing supply as increasing volumes of young talent emigrate and experienced professionals are less inclined to migrate to new companies, particularly in funds and asset management. Significant numbers of financial services professionals have left Dublin due to the cost of housing and childcare, and their resulting distance from the city centre continues to be a factor in a preference for hybrid and remote work. The housing shortage within Dublin is causing companies to struggle with securing overseas talent, leading to a reduction in non-EU professionals and a narrowing of the talent pool.
“Employee retention has become a primary focus of financial services employers. Talent retention is successful where employees have remote working options and are granted salary rises within their current roles. Salary increases are being seen across the board; funds and asset management roles have seen up to 15% salary increases, banking and insurance on average 5% increases, and governance roles have seen up to 10% salary increases.
“While the job market in accounting slowed down slightly, candidate demand continues to outweigh candidate availability in many cases. This shortage is particularly present among newly qualified candidates as many young people emigrate to Australia, the UK, and Canada directly after gaining their qualification. There is an anticipated increase in emigration expected in January 2023 after qualifications are completed. The younger, newly qualified candidates present in Ireland frequently seek higher salaries, jobs with fewer demands, and remote work. Across age groups, it is typical for candidates to have 3-4 offers on the table while in the hiring process.
“Our young legal talent are also completing their qualifications in Ireland and leaving for overseas opportunities. Approximately 40% of legal jobs filled in the last quarter are from returning migrants from the UK and Australia, however these tend to be more mature talent, while 25 to 30-year-olds are emigrating. The young talent remaining have higher salary expectations than ever and a focus on hybrid working models. In exchange for lower salaries, young legal talent are now seeking to enter an employer funded pension scheme early, such as from the first day of work rather than after probation. Increasing numbers of small legal firms are offering pension plans in order to remain competitive. Banks and commercial organisations have been seen to respond to pressures to increase pension contribution percentages above 5%; in workplaces that employ legal talent, legal jobs are seeing this rise as well.
“In the technology sector we are seeing some hiring freezes and we are starting to see some redundancies. Overall, the sector is seeing less of a loss of young talent when compared to other sectors, as technology graduates in Ireland are often comfortable enough with their salary and job options not to feel the need to emigrate. However, international awareness of Ireland’s scarce housing options is leading to a decrease in the volume of overseas technology talent applying for jobs in Ireland over the last quarter. Many technology employment permits are for candidates already resident within Ireland and who have already secured accommodation, reducing employer options for technology hiring.
“Recent legislative changes in Ireland and the UK are also predicted to have an effect on the technology market. The newly announced budget measures improve fiscal options for contractors here in the form of the rent tax credit, household energy tax credit, and small benefit exemption scheme. This may cause a transition within Ireland where technology talent that formerly sought permanent work will consider a move towards contracting options. In the UK, we expect that the repeal of the IR35 tax regulations will increase opportunities for contractors, possibly leading to UK-based technology contractors in Ireland returning to the UK to work, though the effects of the IR35 change for Ireland remain to be seen.
“Meanwhile the Government’s recently announced 10% levy on concrete could cause further challenges for budgets in the construction sector, especially around pharma manufacturing, data centres, and housing growth plans. Consequently, there are early indicators that our construction talent are already looking at career opportunities outside of Ireland for the near future. Many young construction workers are working in Europe as Irish employers doing business in Europe are paying accommodation, travel, and leisure money; these workers may live in Ireland part-time but work on the mainland.”

Revolut, the global financial superapp with more than 20 million customers worldwide, and more than two million in Ireland, launches a savvier way to shop where customers earn cashback from their favourite retailers.
The new service, ‘Shops’, lets users search and browse products from more than one thousand leading brands. These include local favourites ranging from Smyths Toys and Woodies to Arnotts and Brown Thomas; international retailers like Ikea, Amazon, JD Sports, Harvey Norman and TK Maxx; and big brands’ online stores, including Nike, Adidas and a range of luxury fashion houses. The full list of more than 1,000 brands is available in the app.
Regardless of the Revolut plan a customer is on, Revolut Shops rewards users with 3% instant cashback for every purchase, as long as they start their shopping journey from the Revolut app and pay with their Revolut card in full.
Cashback is automatically applied at checkout, so customers will never miss the opportunity to save money again. Unlike other products which can take up to 90 days to give cashback to customers, Revolut Shops sends the cashback instantly. Whether it’s your Christmas shopping, a new fridge, trainers, or a birthday gift, customers can see hundreds of retailers they can shop with and get universal 3% cashback on all purchases with these retailers.
There are no restrictions on getting cashback from purchasing products in a sale, meaning Revolut Shops offers cashback on top of any other savings – including promo codes and sale discounts.
Christopher Guttridge, General Manager of Lifestyle Products at Revolut, said: “We’re delighted to add Shops to our superapp, giving over two million Revolut customers in Ireland the opportunity to get more of what they love.
We’re proud to offer instant cashback, unlike other providers which can take up to three months. As the cost of living rises, we are delivering ongoing product innovations aimed at meeting our customers’ everyday financial needs and aspirations, whilst giving them more financial control. Shops helps our customers get the most out of every penny with cashback rewards, or helps them spread the cost of purchases for more expensive periods of the year, such as the Christmas holidays.”
In Shops, users also have an option to split their payment using ‘Pay Later’, the first pay later product in Ireland that uses an approved credit limit, designed to focus on affordability. Pay Later is a way to purchase product(s) in which the customer takes possession of the merchandise on payment of a first instalment and completes the payment by paying two further instalments. Qualified customers can use Pay Later for purchases up to a maximum of €499, with any of their Revolut cards, including when paying with a Revolut Disposable Virtual Card, which provides an extra layer of security for online transactions.
Customers making a purchase on Revolut Shops using Pay Later can use the payment method, but will not get 3% cashback. If a customer would like to repay the instalments early, there are no additional fees to do so.
To start shopping, existing customers can open Shops in the Revolut app. New customers can first download the Revolut app on their smartphones on Google Play or Apple Store and sign up to immediately access Revolut Shops.
Many earbud manufacturers are now targeting the gamer fan which means you get a two in one product and most likely a better price and they are doing this by offering a lower latency take on their earbuds QYC is a new brand here to us and after reviewing their last earbuds the QCY T18 earbuds which are super impressive for the price their G1 model attempts to attract gamers as we do have an option to use solely as a gaming earbud or a gaming earbud but the thing is when you offer both you give people more for their money and attract new custom.
Their app is great which we went over in the QCY T18 but below is a what is different this time around and all the smarts that were there in the T18 are still present so you are getting that but more and at an affordable price point which is great for the consumer.
As you can see the app has all you need you have got battery level control sound control for both gaming and music and feature controls you can even control the LED and you have a sleeping mode option.
As for the sound again it is good however I found these a bit on the brighter side compared to the previous pair we checkout but that is just my thoughts and again can be customised with the app but overall good sound across the board and no lag latency when using with Netflix etc and whilst gaming and so on and for anyone on a budget who requires new earbuds and wants them for music and gaming you should look at these, they are light comfortable and the controls work well and all in all a well rounded product at an affordable price offer both gamers and music listeners value for money again.
Dell Technologies introduces Project Frontier, which will deliver an edge operations software platform, integrated with Dell’s edge portfolio, for customers to more securely manage and orchestrate edge applications and infrastructure for deployments at global scale.
The complexities of edge operations—in locations from manufacturing floors and retail stores to remote wind turbines—are growing as more organisations want to manage and secure data at the source but have limited IT support to do it. According to a 2022 IDC survey, 42% of businesses say the most challenging aspect of edge deployments is putting together an entire edge solution. With the amount of data generated growing nine times annually and expected to reach 221 exabytes by 2026, organisations need a simple and effective way to manage and secure the diverse ecosystem of edge technologies.
“We’re seeing exponential growth in applications running at the edge, making edge the next frontier of business transformation—where devices, infrastructure and data come together to deliver real-time insights at scale,” said Gil Shneorson, senior vice president of edge solutions, Dell Technologies. “With this growth, comes complexity. It’s not feasible to have IT staff deployed at every edge location. Our decades of edge experience combined with our new solutions help customers simplify their edge and streamline their data to gain insights ranging from factory safety and the speed and precision of patient care in hospitals, while providing more choice in how they realise their edge and multicloud technologies.”
Dell’s Project Frontier to more securely scale edge operations for any enterprise use case
With the Project Frontier edge operations software platform, customers can expect:
Their choice of software applications, IoT frameworks, operational technologies (OT), multi-cloud environments and future technologies supported by an open design that will consolidate existing and new enterprise edge use cases.
Zero Trust-enabled security protection across edge applications, data and infrastructure, from design to deployment, backed by end-to-end supply chain security measures.
Greater efficiency and reliability of end-to-end edge operations with centralised management, zero-touch deployment and secure device on-boarding.
Minimal need for IT expertise in the field with automation to streamline edge deployments and operations across potentially thousands of edge locations.
Integration of edge compute and storage hardware with workloads for ease of serviceability and increased security.
Global planning and support services across 170 countries to help design edge deployments and create a road map for scaling customers’ edge infrastructure to meet new demand.
As an example, Dell Technologies is one of the world’s leading technology manufacturers and manages one of the largest global supply chains. Dell plans to deploy the edge platform to deliver increased production line efficiencies by simplifying operations, securely connecting critical data from the production floor to IT infrastructure and enabling real-time reporting of automation data. Additionally, with the Dell Edge Design Program, Dell is collaborating with customers to help design and shape the development of Project Frontier to meet their specific needs.
“IDC sees a wide range of locations where modern edge workloads will be deployed, and it is critical that these environments are highly resilient and can operate with limited human intervention,” said Jennifer Cooke, IDC Research Director for Edge Strategies. “Dell’s efforts with its Project Frontier look to be a strong step forward in realising an architecture to address these needs and help customers streamline their edge operations.”
“Dell Technologies and Atos have long worked together to deliver more value to businesses by helping them realise the full potential of their data,” said Arnaud Langer, Global Edge and IoT senior product director, Atos. “We look forward to collaborating on new edge innovations that can help organisations significantly simplify and secure their edge while improving business outcomes.”
Innovations across Dell infrastructure and end user portfolio simplify edge deployments
As Project Frontier comes to life, Dell is expanding its current edge portfolio to help businesses scale and manage their edge deployments.
Edge analytics and operations: Manufacturers can remove complexities and streamline how they deploy edge applications with an enhanced Dell Validated Design for Manufacturing Edge. The solution now includes new Dell-validated partner applications to support advanced edge use cases and improve factory processes and efficiencies, while reducing waste and raw materials usage for more sustainable operations. For example, Claroty provides asset discovery, network protection, threat detection and vulnerability and risk management for cyber-physical systems. Cognex machine vision helps improve manufacturing quality and performance by eliminating defects, verifying assembly and tracking information during the production process. Telit automates data collection and management from sensors, devices, machines and factories with its IoT platform. XMPro creates composable digital twins of factory operations to help manufacturers save time and materials during the factory operating process. Manufacturers can respond quickly to changes in demand and enable reconfigurable production lines with Dell’s private 5G capability.
Edge compute and analytics: The Dell PowerEdge XR4000 is the shortest depth server in the Dell PowerEdge family at about the size of a shoebox. The XR4000 is 60% shorter than traditional data center servers, and its multiple mounting options allow it to be installed in a rack, on walls or ceilings, saving valuable floor space. The multi-node, 2U chassis server can survive unpredictable conditions like heat waves or falls. While small, the XR4000 is a high-performance server capable of supporting a wide range of edge workloads and is designed with Intel® Xeon® D processors with multi-operating system as well as optional GPU support. The XR4000 is available with the Dell Validated Design for Manufacturing Edge and powers new Dell VxRail rugged modular nodes, delivering high performance and scalability in high latency, low bandwidth locations.
Edge data collection: Built to withstand the most demanding edge locations, the Dell Latitude 7230 Rugged Extreme Tablet is the industry’s lightest, most powerful, 12” fully-rugged tablet. Designed to operate in extreme cold and hot environments, this tablet is rated for maximum protection against dust, dirt and water—ideal for first responders and outdoor environments. At this year’s Meta Connect, LastPass announced it is the first password manager with a 2D Progressive Web App (PWA) in the Meta Quest Store, available today, with a native integration into the Meta Quest Browser planned for early 2023. This marks a major milestone for LastPass as it becomes a key security service for virtual reality users and will prove vital as Meta continues to expand its VR ecosystem to include business, educational, productivity and entertainment environments.
The LastPass app solves the current challenge of accessing passwords on Meta Quest, by providing a simple and secure account login experience with quick access to credentials, credit cards, addresses and more without removing the VR headset. Whether customers are logging in or completing a purchase, this is the simplest and most productive way to access apps and securely browse in VR. All LastPass customers, including those using the free version, can download LastPass from the Meta Quest Store. Quest customers who do not have a LastPass account can create one here.
“We’re honored to join Meta to solve a real-life pain point of so many VR users,” said Karim Toubba, CEO of LastPass. “As we kick off this initial phase, we look forward to making a positive impact through the custom app integration to deliver the best possible experience. Universal access to your logins, personal information, and data should be the expectation, no matter which device you’re using – and LastPass provides this ubiquity – whether you’re at home, at work, or in the metaverse.”
Early next year, LastPass will make the experience even more simple and seamless by offering automatic save and fill functionality when it will become the first cross-device password manager integrated natively in the Meta Quest Browser.
The all new Pixel Watch comes with several types of bands to chose from which is a good start, you of course get a band with the watch but you can pick from several others there with various materials and price points, the choice is yours, We have the Pixel Watch Stretch Band and it has to be said it is pretty comfortable to wear as I have for a few days.
It is a simple operation to change out the bands after you fiddle around with it and like any other band replacing it will get easier but first time a bit of a pain however that is just me and now it is on and all is good, you will need to be careful picking your wrist size so do check what is available on any given bands you might look at and measure your wrist beforehand, I have the Xtra large one which worked well for me.
One thing to add is do not do this over a table or a solid surface as the watch face is rounded and may get scratched and hopefully there will be some kind of accessory soon to avoid this happening, we will look into more bands down the road so stay tuned for more things Pixel on techbuzzireland and of course Youtube
Google have launched their first official watch which is of course smart and the same applies to the watch as did the phone and any tech we do not do leaks for clicks we wait for the product to be in our hands for assessment and the day has come us to check it out.
I have many smartwatches here as our readers know and a fan for several reasons, it keeps you off your phone more you can do things from the watch if required to do so and get on without the need to take your phone out of your pocket and this was a conversation I had with Nokia mobile here in Dublin last week with some of their feature phones and the same applies to a watch whereby it is less distracting and you can chose to ignore or reply to emails and social etc which is also good for the mental health I think..
Now with this offering from Google it appears to be a fitness orientated watch on top of being smart at the same time and as we know they bought fitbit and fitbit did not cut it offering more for the user but was heavy on the fitness end of things and was more a product for people into fitness but with not much other functionality which I understand, different strokes for different folks and all that but this has changed somewhat.
Again there has been commentary on this watch which I chose to ignore and make my own assessments and so far it has been more so on the bad side, again form folks who typically pick on Google and do not have the product in hand and snuff the idea of its existence which is fine don’t get me wrong but it is down to the hands on experience after all and what the product does isn’t it?
Check the video below for more and if you have any questions drop em in the comments
The Google Pixel 7 has arrived and once again we avoided all the leaks and wait until the device is in our hands to see for ourselves what is on offer and still using the Pixel 6a which I am loving it is time to see what the new member of the family has to offer, being a pixel user from their first ever device these are phones that stay in my hands longer than others as I have an entire Google ecosystem at home and it all works very seamlessly.
There is some cool new features of course with the new device and once again makes live simple, some we have seen before and enhanced and there is an argument over which device is better value for money with the price, we have a bumped up Tensor chip G2 which is their own inhouse chip.
We have a 6.3 inch Oled screen with 416 PPI, 1400 nits and 2400 X 1080 panel, A 90hz refresh rate here which is a bit disappointing some will say as it is the new buzzword but for me it is no huge deal being honest having used and own devices with 120hz refresh rate for the most I have has to point this out and show people and not really a deal breaker to be frank but others would disagree and nitpick like we always see for Google devices at launch bit no so loud on iPhone shortcomings and I own an iPhone 14 pro which so far has been pretty much the same as before, having said that it is a tech cycle and we often see a small jump in specs and then companies calling old things new and then features arriving later and so on and claiming they are new, you know how it goes and often it is funny how they take each other off on social media. Banter never did anyone any harm.
The rear has changed to a metal visor style this time and for the better and one piece with a 50MP camera that comes with OIS 12MP ultra wide and but no telephoto camera, the front camera is 10.8 MP and as we know Google has done cameras very well over the years even with a single lens option. There is new features here like Cinematic blur which and face unblur and for that you can tidy up some old photos but we will see more on that in the full review later on. We also have 4K 60fps which is plenty in my eyes, currently I have a phone that shoots in 8K which is pointless today. You will need to update the app because it will keep crashing until you do. Also note the Pixel watch app will need to be installed.
The battery again is of course another feature people often speak about which comes in at 4355mAh and smaller than last years which was 4614mAh if my memory serves me right so it will be interesting to see how that fair out in our testing, there is new features to come to the Pixel 7 later down the road.
Today we take a tour of the Pixel 6 and have a look at the UI and see what is there and check out the phone in general as we always do here and let you see what it is all about and if you have any questions feel free to ask, we only have the device in our hands for 3 days and so far so good but it takes more than that to give an honest review which we will have in a few weeks and a better assessment loaded with all the apps for example and any updates that arrive in the interim and see how it gets on and I expect to see good things going forward as always and we will report them here and if there is any shortcomings but for the price it looks like another winner and is the pro version worth the extra 250 euro they ask??
Also stay tuned for some case reviews and more for the Pixel 7 coming soon from our other partners.
