Park Place Announces New Liquid Cooling Solutions to Cut Costs and Carbon Emissions for Ireland Data Centres

Park Place Technologies, the world’s leading global data centre and networking optimisation firm, today announces the expansion of its portfolio of IT infrastructure services with the introduction of two Liquid Cooling solutions for data centres: Immersion Liquid Cooling and Direct-to-Chip Cooling.

This announcement comes at a critical time for businesses who are seeing a dramatic increase in the compute power they require, driven by adoption of technologies like AI and IoT. This in turn is driving the need for more on-prem hardware, more space for that hardware, and more energy to run it all – presenting a significant financial and environmental challenge for businesses. Park Place Technology’s new Liquid Cooling solutions present a strong solution for businesses looking to address these challenges as the technology has the potential to deliver strong financial and environmental results.

Direct-to-Chip is an advanced cooling method that applies coolant directly to the server components that generate the most heat including CPUs and GPUs. Immersion cooling empowers data centre operators to do more with less: less space and less energy. Using these methods, businesses can increase their Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) by up to 18 times, and rack density by up to 10 times. Ultimately, this can help deliver power savings of up to 50%, which in turn leads to lower operation costs.

From an environmental perspective, liquid cooling is significantly more efficient than traditional air cooling. At present, air cooling technology only captures 30% of the heat generated by the servers, compared to the 100% captured by immersion cooling, resulting in lower carbon emissions for businesses that opt for immersion cooling methods.

Park Place Technologies can deliver a complete, turn-key solution for organisations looking to implement Liquid Cooling technology, removing the complexity of adoption, which is a common barrier for businesses. Park Place Technologies provides a single-vendor solution for the whole process from procuring the hardware, conversion of the servers for liquid cooling, installation, maintenance, monitoring and management of the hardware and the cooling technology.

“Our new Liquid Cooling offerings have the potential to have a significant impact on our customers’ costs and carbon emissions, two of the key issues they face today,” said Chris Carreiro, Chief Technology Officer, at Park Place Technologies.  “Park Place Technologies is ideally positioned to help organisations cut their data centre operations costs, giving them the opportunity to re-invest in driving innovation across their businesses.

The decision to invest in Immersion Cooling and Direct-to-Chip Cooling depends on various factors, including the specific requirements of the data center, budget constraints, the desired level of cooling efficiency, and infrastructure complexity. Park Place Technologies can work closely with customers to find the best solution for their business, and can guide them towards the best long-term strategy, while offering short-term results. This takes much of the complexity out of the process, which will enable more businesses to capitalise on this exciting new technology.”

Certa first to open 10 HVO sites as demand for renewable fuel rises across Ireland

Certa, which is part of DCC plc, has become the first fuel operator in Ireland to make HVO available at ten of its forecourts as demand for the renewable fuel continues to rise among motorists nationwide.

One in five of Certa’s network of 49 unmanned, pay@pump forecourts now offers HVO alongside other fuels as Certa continues to make the biofuel more widely available to motorists seeking a renewable alternative to diesel.

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is produced from waste plant matter and can be used as a direct replacement for diesel without any need for vehicle or engine modifications to help motorists lower their carbon emissions by up to 90%.

Last November, Certa began the process of upgrading its network to make HVO available alongside diesel and unleaded petrol and it has achieved the milestone of opening its 10th HVO site after introducing HVO pumps at its forecourt in Corofin in county Clare.

HVO is now available at the Certa forecourts in Liffey Valley, Dundrum, Clarehall and Finglas (Clearwater) in Dublin, Lee Tunnel in Cork, Ballyhaunis in Mayo, Maynooth in Kildare, Trim in Meath, Moyne in Longford and Corofin in Clare.

Certa has provided the new HVO pumps alongside diesel and petrol pumps and the fuel is distinguished through the use of a pink nozzle to stand out from the traditional black diesel and green petrol nozzles.

Orla Stevens, Managing Director, Certa Ireland said:

Certa is leading the way in making HVO more widely available to motorists across Ireland. Our goal is to make it easy for motorists to transition to HVO as a renewable alternative to diesel to help them to lower their carbon emissions.

‘Our success in upgrading our network to offer HVO at 10 sites is an important milestone for Certa and our customers. The demand for HVO has grown as we have opened each new site, and our plan is to complete the upgrading of our entire network into next year as we continue our journey towards a net-zero future’.

Certa has also helped a growing number of businesses and events to decarbonise and to transition to HVO as a renewable fuel, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), John Sisk & Son Ltd., Dublin Airport, Dublin Port, The National Ploughing Championship, the Irish Open and Bloom.

Certa has already transitioned its entire fleet of 100 delivery vehicles from diesel to HVO in line with its commitment to reduce its carbon emissions to net zero by 2050 or sooner. It is also installing Solar PV panels across its network to enable its forecourts to generate their own power from solar energy.

Certa was one of the first HVO suppliers in Ireland to be awarded International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC) which provides full transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain. This certification enables Certa to create and assign Proof of Sustainability (POS) certification to the businesses that it supplies with HVO.

Certa’s work to make HVO more accessible and more widely available to motorists and businesses was also recognised when it received the prestigious Green Award at the 2024 UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors (UKIFDA) Awards.

Keurig Dr Pepper Ireland Facility to Reduce its Carbon Emissions by 100%

Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) today announced plans to invest €6.44 million ($7.16 million) in its beverage production International Operations hub based in Newbridge, Co. Kildare.  The company will electrify its heat through the installation of the latest technology in heat pumps and implement several energy savings initiatives.

Once construction is complete, the state-of-the-art beverage production facility will be powered with 100% renewable electricity and will minimise overall energy consumption. This will enable the facility to reduce approximately 1,600 metric tons of carbon emissions annually, contributing to KDP’s 2030 climate commitments to obtain 100% of electricity from renewable sources and reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 30%.

This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

Minister for Enterprise Trade & Employment Peter Burke TD said, “The announcement today that Keurig Dr Pepper plans to invest €6.44 million in its Newbridge facility is exceptionally welcome news. The plans, including a state-of-the-art facility powered with 100% renewable electricity and reduced carbon emissions, are very much in line with the Climate Action Plan. Introducing these initiatives will help in meeting our targets and go towards protecting our environmental future, both locally and globally.”

Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation Dara Calleary said, “It has been my pleasure to meet with David Lainchbury and the team at Keurig Dr Pepper in Newbridge and hear about their plans to invest over €6 million in their beverage production International Operations hub. I commend all efforts to reduce carbon emissions and the steps made towards a sustainable future for all. Thanks to Keurig Dr Pepper for both their continued investment in Ireland and championing investments in sustainability.”

Opened in 2022, the Newbridge facility is home to more than 100 employees that manufacture beverage concentrates for some of KDP’s biggest brands including Dr Pepper, Canada Dry, 7UP, Big Red and Sunkist. In 2023, the facility obtained ISO 14001 certification by adhering to the internationally recognised standard for environmental management.

“We are thrilled to make this green capital investment in our International Operations hub,” said David Lainchbury, Chief Procurement Officer & SVP of International Operations at KDP Ireland. “We recognise that we have a key role to play in this local community, and this investment helps us build economic and environmental resilience in Newbridge and beyond.”

IDA CEO Michael Lohan said, “Ireland is delighted to support Keurig Dr Pepper’s sustainable energy journey. This investment aligns with IDA Ireland’s goals and the Irish Government’s White Paper on Enterprise 2022-2030, which prioritises decarbonisation. By removing all fossil fuel use at KDP Ireland’s Kildare site, this project will not only meet but exceed the carbon reduction targets in the National Climate Action Plan. I wish KDP Ireland every success with this groundbreaking initiative.”

Installation of the infrastructure upgrades will begin later in 2024 with a construction period of approximately one year.
