Google Ireland Opens ‘The Factory at Bolands Mill’: A Newly Restored Community, Arts & Culture Space

Minister Patrick O’Donovan TD was joined by Vanessa Hartley, Head of Google Ireland today to celebrate the official opening of The Factory, a dedicated community arts and culture space located at Bolands Mills, the new urban quarter made possible by Google. Designed as a home for creativity, collaboration, and community engagement, The Factory reaffirms Google’s long-standing commitment to its local community.

Long a landmark on Dublin’s cultural map, The Factory has hosted legendary names like The Bolshoi Ballet, U2, and David Bowie, who have spent time here, performing, recording or rehearsing. The Factory has also nurtured some of Ireland’s most talented actors and film-makers.  Paying homage to its rich  history, the space has been restored by Google in consultation with multiple local community groups across the arts and creative industries including the National Performance Arts School, Neurodiversity Irishtown, Ringsend & Pearse Street (NIRP), RMS Music, the Dublin 4 Dance Academy, St Andrews Resource Centre, Ringsend Community Services Forum, Education Task Force and This City Works.

What began with just five employees in a shared office has grown into a thriving team of over 5,000 people around Barrow Street. The Factory is located at the site of the historic Bolands flour mills which was acquired by Google in 2018. Now complete, the restoration of the 150-year-old mill and surrounding site includes over 50,000 square feet of newly landscaped outdoor areas alongside 30,000 square feet of retail and community space. Bolands Mills also provides a new hub for Google’s engineering teams,  retail spaces for an eclectic mix of independent local businesses, as well as 46 discounted-rental apartments made available to key workers supporting the local community via Clúid.

OSRAM launches dash and reversing cameras!

Original equipment (OE) manufacturer and renowned automotive specialist, OSRAM, has introduced a brand new range to its offering: dash cameras, as well as reversing cameras.

To improve visibility and safety for the driver and pedestrians, OSRAM has launched its range of cameras to the market, both dash and reversing cameras. Cameras in a vehicle are a fantastic way to ensure that visibility is at its maximum and they also record footage that may be needed in the case of an accident.

Dash cameras

For OSRAM’s new dash camera range, the business has launched three new dash cameras to accommodate all needs, which range in price depending on specification. All of the dash cameras have high quality resolution and come with USB-C charging cables to create an easy plug and play system. They all provide clear and high quality footage and automatically save files in the event of a collision.

ROADsight 1500

With a compact two inch screen and adjustable suction cup mount, the ROADsight 1500 is the ideal starter dash camera. It has a 110° field of view, as well as a G sensor and is simple to install and can be used with a Micro SD card up to 32GB capacity.

ROADsight 2500

The ROADsight 2500 also has a two inch screen but has an adhesive fitting, ensuring it has a strong hold on the windscreen. Reversing cameras

Being able to have access to a rear camera can reassure drivers about checking the area behind them is clear and also assists them in what space is available when reversing. While a rearview mirror can give drivers a view of what is behind the vehicle, it lacks total visibility, which reversing cameras provide.

The OSRAM wired and wireless reversing cameras, ROADsight REVERSE, can be fitted to 12V and 24V vehicles, including cars, light commercial vehicles, caravans, motorhomes, horse boxes – anything that may require a reversing camera.

The initial range consists of two models, plus additional accessories, both of which are IP67 rated dust and waterproof cameras suitable for on and off road use, which are easy to install, the wireless product has a wireless connection up to 100 metres in an open environment.

Mater Hospital Launches Ireland’s first AI Centre in a Clinical Setting to Transform Patient Care

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) has become the first hospital in Ireland to establish a Centre for AI and Digital Health. The new hub, which will be based at the Pillar Centre for Transformative Healthcare, will utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to solve clinical problems across the hospital and, through research, develop AI-driven solutions to improve patient care and outcomes.

The Mater Hospital’s Centre for AI and Digital Health has been brought about through the collaboration of consultants, researchers and hospital leadership, and will make a tangible difference in patient care. From reducing emergency department waiting times, to assisting in diagnostics and automating time-consuming tasks, the Centre will place the Mater Hospital at the forefront of AI-driven healthcare innovation in Ireland.

“AI has the power to transform how we deliver healthcare,” said Erin Daly, Operations Manager for the Pillar Centre for Transformative Healthcare. “At the Mater Hospital, we are developing AI solutions that directly improve clinical processes, whether it’s streamlining workflows, assisting in medical research, or helping doctors make faster, data-driven decisions.”

The Mater Hospital’s new hub for AI-driven medical advancements is overseeing the adoption of AI and engaging in research across multiple medical specialties, including radiology, oncology, cardiology, and ophthalmology.

“This centre offers a unique opportunity to bring together clinical and technical expertise to adopt and innovate with AI in Irish healthcare,” says Paul Banahan, Senior AI Research Fellow at the Mater Hospital.

Among some of its pioneering research projects are:

  • AI-driven automation which will help to identify suitable patients for clinical trials in oncology. This will significantly reduce the 16 hours per week it currently takes a nurse to manually scan these lists, speeding up patient access to clinical trials.

  • The reduction in the number of cardiac fluoroscopy video x-ray images, and subsequently the radiation exposure to both the patients and clinical staff, through real-time AI generated images.

  • The synthetic spinal imaging project, which has developed a generative AI that can convert lumbar spine CT images into synthetic MRI images for Cauda Equina Syndrome presentations, allowing for better and more robust out-of-hour or emergency care planning and treatment.

Speaking on the potential applications of AI in cardiology, Prof. Joe Galvin, Consultant Cardiologist at the Mater Hospital said, “AI has the potential to enhance the accuracy of ECG and radiology scan analysis, reducing the time that a patient has to wait for the results of their diagnosis and, if required, starting their treatment sooner.  If a patient suffers from cardiovascular disease, stroke or cardiac arrest, every minute counts. AI’s ability to increase accuracy and speed may be life-saving.”

While AI promises significant benefits, the Centre is equally focused on its responsible and ethical implementation. Robust data protection and management frameworks are being developed to ensure patient safety and privacy, as well compliance with best practices.

The Centre’s work is already proving invaluable, with AI solutions contributing to the reduction of emergency department waiting times and optimising hospital workflows. In the Mater’s Radiology department, AI is assisting in the rapid notification of suspected pathologies, like stroke and fractures, which are being correctly flagged by AI within 2-3 minutes of the scan being completed, with an accuracy rate of over 90%. Mater Hospital Consultant Radiologist Prof. Peter MacMahon said, “Our experiences have underscored the tangible benefits of AI, notably in expediting critical diagnoses and reducing turnaround times by rapidly flagging anomalies detected in scans.”
