ESB ecars announces price decreases of up to 13% for tariffs across its EV charging network

ESB ecars has today announced a planned price decrease across its public EV charging network in the Republic of Ireland, which will be effective from Friday, 21st June. This will see unit rates for High-Power (200kW) chargers reduce by 13%, Fast chargers reduce by 12% and Standard chargers reduce by 8%.

Contactless payments will also be available on High-Power Chargers from the end of this week.

The existing one-off overstay fee of €8 has been replaced by a more progressive, incremental fee to further encourage drivers to free up charge points for other drivers when finished charging.

ESB’s most recent customer survey found that 76% of respondents support the overstay fee. The new overstay fee structure is 50c/min and kicks in after 45 minutes on High-Power and Fast chargers and after 10 hours on Standard chargers.

Commenting on the price reduction, John Byrne, Head of eMobility at ESB, said: “We are pleased to announce a reduction of prices across our extensive EV public charging network.

We are lowering our prices following reductions in wholesale energy costs while continuing to upgrade and improve our charging infrastructure across the country. We keep our prices under constant review and are committed to providing value to our customers with competitive prices.”

To ensure customers are notified of when overstay fees would apply, ESB is encouraging all drivers to turn on notifications on the ESB ecar connect app. Customers will receive push notifications as a reminder about the overstay fee when they start their charge.

ESB has installed 42 multi-vehicle, high-power charging hubs nationwide over the past two years and replaced over 300 chargers to increase the speed and capacity of the charging network.

ESB now has over 1,600 public charge points in place across the country with an average reliability rate of 98%.

Millions of Britons fall victim to fake websites here is how to avoid it and be aware

Over five million Britons have been scammed on a fake website in the last year and over half of those (2.7 million) have lost money from it according to a new study by F-Secure. With an average loss of £50 this totals up to £130m being stolen from Britons’ pockets, and the UK economy.

It’s no secret that cyber criminals employ sophisticated tactics to orchestrate shopping scams, and the creation of fake websites that mimic well-known, established brands is just one of those ways.

In a recent study by F-Secure, research uncovered what Britons are buying when they are hit by fake websites and it’s impacting a spectrum of industries. The most common products are:

  1. Technology
  2. Clothing
  3. Home furnishings
  4. Cosmetics
  5. Footwear

In a bigger twist, further research by F-Secure found that six in 10 consumers have avoided shopping with small and independent businesses: expressing a preference for shopping with better-known and established brands. However, more than half of the identified fake websites were impersonating three leading global mass-market brands.

Here, F-Secure’s Tom Gaffney, talks more about the issue of brand impersonation and what consumers should look out for.

The presumption that bigger brands are safer is where the danger lies because they are more prone to impersonation. They are easier to impersonate and often big brands that offer high demand items (the latest Nike shoe, Apple device for example), can be more lucrative for cybercriminals.

Fraudsters are clever – leveraging brand assets such as imagery, logos, and colours – fraudsters lure consumers in with an illusion of authenticity. They also use nefarious domains, employing slight misspellings that go unnoticed, or using subtle unconventional domains like ‘.shop’ or ‘.xyz’. This all poses a challenge in discerning their legitimacy.

The primary goal of brand impersonation is to deceive consumers into providing sensitive personal information, such as credit card details, or to lure them into purchasing counterfeit or compromised goods and taking their money. Alternatively, scammers may simply aim to defraud customers by accepting payments without delivering the promised products or services.

It’s important that consumers stay vigilant to ensure the best protection for themselves and their wallets against online scamming tactics. Here are nine top tips to staying safe when shopping online:

Check if a website is safe to use:

Use a trusted tool like F-Secure Online Shopping Checker to check if a website is safe to buy from.

Monitor your bank accounts and credit cards

Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorised transactions and report any suspicious activity to your financial institution immediately.

Use unique and strong passwords

If user details are stolen from a legitimate retailer via a data breach, shoppers could be at risk. So it’s important to use a strong, unique password when creating your online accounts.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

Always enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where available. Two-factor authentication works by adding extra security to online accounts (beyond your username and password).

Be vigilant about email scams

If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from a big brand urging you to click a link, don’t do it. If you think it’s genuine, go directly to the official website by typing the URL into your browser.

Use a credit card or PayPal

Many credit card providers offer insurance against fraud. PayPal also offers some support for safe online shopping. Avoid wire transfers or other untraceable payment methods.

Beware of big bargains

Nowadays, comparison engines have essentially removed the need for retailers to provide large discounts. So, it’s important to be wary of huge offers that seem too good to be true.

Be vigilant even with brands you know and trust

Given that scammers often impersonate bigger brands, make sure to remain vigilant even when shopping with the brands you know.

Use a reliable internet security app

The best way to stay safe online is by using a trusted internet security product. With F-Secure Total, your passwords are monitored, you’ll be alerted of breaches if they occur, and your access to potentially harmful shopping sites will be automatically blocked.

Rise of the robots’ must ensure an integral role for human beings in the Irish co-operative agrifood sector of the future

A vision for a technologically and digitally enabled future for the Irish co-operative agrifood sector, with the skills of human beings remaining integrally engaged, was presented today at the final conference of the LeadFarm 5.0 project, held in Maynooth, Co. Kildare.

The conference was opened by the Minister of State for Skills and Further Education, Niall Collins TD. The initiative started in May 2022 spearheaded by ICOS Skillnet in collaboration with Léargas and supported by the EU Erasmus+ programme.

In the future, advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics and big data will be integrated into all aspects of daily life. This integration aims to solve social challenges, improve quality of life and enhance the success of enterprises.

The LeadFarm project focused on developing a competency framework and roadmap for Irish agrifood co-operatives to transition the skills of their people towards ‘Society 5.0’ or the ‘super-intelligent society’. It has been a collaborative effort involving a broad and diverse range of co-operatives including management, farmers and workers from Ireland, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Latvia and Portugal.

A training curriculum emerging from the project emphasises human skills acquisition in areas such as digitalisation, sustainability, management and entrepreneurship while highlighting the potential to balance digital advancements with human-robot collaboration. The approach aims to improve employment opportunities and skills in rural Ireland, creating a sustainable future for the industry.

Minister Niall Collins TD said:

“I congratulate the ICOS Skillnet for taking proactive steps to clarify the competencies required for the adoption of digital innovation by agri-food cooperatives. Initiatives like this ensure that Ireland shapes its future rather than simply respond to technological change ”.

ICOS President Edward Carr said:

“The purpose of this conference is to disseminate the outcomes of the LeadFarm 5.0 project to as many stakeholders as possible. It outlines the good work carried out by this pan-European initiative and showcases the benefits to co-operatives and farmers across Europe.

“ICOS is the lead partner in this project. This is with the specific aim to support various stakeholders including co-operatives, social enterprises, boards of directors, farmers, trainers, and educators, with a particular focus on those at risk of exclusion such as youth and women.

“The concept is about ensuring the long-term sustainability of the industry through skill and talent development. We are focused on creating a more digitally aware society that will be human-centred and will take advantage of technology to tackle problems that affect the whole of society as well as our own industry.

“The agri-food co-operative sector must participate, join this trend, and support the creation of a society which is aware and committed to the problems it faces, avoiding becoming a sector that remains a trace of the technological past.”

International collaboration and engagement of the lead partners from seven countries has fostered international collaboration and the exchange of best practices. All intellectual outputs have been secured for practical application within Ireland, ensuring the Irish agrifood sector can be aware and prepared for significant technological advancements.

Minister Niall Collins acknowledged the importance of the project’s achievements and the promotion of future success for Irish co-operative enterprises within the framework of Society 5.0.

Future Impact

Further Background:

LeadFarm 5.0 arises from the need to improve the knowledge, capacities and skills of European agri-food co-operatives regarding the use of digital innovations that can be easily adapted to new agricultural models that will largely replace the intensive industrial farming model and that will require changes in business decision-making processes.

Agrifood co-operatives need to improve and innovate key capacities, skills and competencies for change in the fields of action for climate and AI without neglecting the most basic human values linked to co-operatives.

This needs to take into account the industry trend towards automation of production processes, in the context of AI development, the internet of things, cognitive computing, the use of cobots (collaborative robots), and promoting precision agriculture, without forgetting climate change mitigation.

Empowering the human being must be at the centre of all of this, supported by technology at the centre of production processes.

Tech Review – MeacoFan Sefte 10” Table Air Circulator

The MeacoFan Sefte 10” Table Air Circulator is one of a duo of products recently announced by the brand and having tested several fans over the years the MeaocFan 260c air circulator has been a life saver on many occasions and still sits at my desk or bedside locked it even comes on trips with me and will continue to do so due to its size.

This Table Air Circulator has more to offer though, given it is larger it is not as portable as the 260c but it is in your home you will not be packing this one in your travel bag like I do with the 260c  but I guess you could pop it in your car if you know that your hotel does not offer working air conditioning or just bring it eitherway.

This has more on offer as mentioned with a small circular remote control which is cool and has some additional features built on as to the controls on the unit itself.

The control gives you the extra options silence the keys, turn off the lights and set a timer the control then offers the same as is on the unit itself which is all on the right the former is on the left.

There is three modes on offer and multiple speeds and the main feature on this unit is that it can move up or down and left to right it is not fixed unlike the 260c.

There is ECO mode standard mode and night mode if you will and again all can be controlled and set to your needs and at night it steps down in speeds.

The cool air that flows from this is again superb, I have been use to having my smaller 260 now for a few years but this steps things up massively and is ideal for a large desk or even room and of course your bedside locker if big enough to hold it, with this I can now know I will be kept cool when it is hot not that we get much heat hear but I tend to use fans regardless as I like to feel of the cool air blowing on me and with this fan I know it is been done in style and feels great.

The oscillation is the beauty about the SEFTE 10″ giving you more control. New oscillation motors enable 65° vertical and 120° horizontal movement. These combine to help reach every corner of the room, while new Air Beam Precision allows users to precisely position the airflow between narrow, medium and wide angles.

These features can be effortlessly adjusted from a glow in the dark remote control, helping people to rest, relax and sleep at the touch of a button.

The Importance of Psychometric Assessments for Tech Job Recruitment

In the rapidly evolving world of technology, hiring the right talent is more critical than ever. Companies are not just looking for individuals with the right technical skills, but also those who fit well within their organizational culture and possess the cognitive abilities to adapt and grow. This is where psychometric assessments come into play. These scientifically validated tests provide a comprehensive understanding of a candidate’s capabilities beyond what is evident on their resume or during an interview.

Understanding Psychometric Assessments

Psychometric assessments are standardized tests designed to measure individuals’ mental capabilities and behavioural styles. These assessments can evaluate a variety of attributes, including cognitive abilities, personality traits, and emotional intelligence. Unlike traditional interviews, which can be influenced by biases and subjective judgment, psychometric tests offer an objective method to gauge a candidate’s potential and fit for a specific role.

Cognitive Abilities: Predicting Job Performance

One of the primary components of psychometric assessments is the evaluation of cognitive abilities. In tech jobs, where problem-solving and critical thinking are essential, understanding a candidate’s cognitive strengths can be highly predictive of their job performance. Cognitive ability tests typically measure skills such as logical reasoning, numerical aptitude, and verbal comprehension. These skills are crucial for tech professionals who need to analyse complex data, develop algorithms, and create innovative solutions.

For instance, a software developer might need to understand and debug a piece of code efficiently. A cognitive ability test can help identify candidates who possess the sharp analytical skills required for such tasks. By incorporating these assessments into the recruitment agency process, companies can ensure they are selecting candidates who have the intellectual capacity to excel in their roles.

Personality Traits: Ensuring Cultural Fit

While technical skills and cognitive abilities are important, they are not the only factors that determine a candidate’s success in a tech job. Personality traits also play a significant role. Psychometric assessments often include personality tests that help employers understand a candidate’s behavioural tendencies, motivations, and interpersonal skills.

For example, in a collaborative work environment, it is essential to have team members who can communicate effectively, work well under pressure, and adapt to changing circumstances. Personality tests can reveal whether a candidate is a good fit for such an environment. Traits such as openness to experience, conscientiousness, and emotional stability are indicators of how well an individual might integrate into a company’s culture and contribute positively to the team dynamic.

Emotional Intelligence: Navigating the Tech Industry

Emotional intelligence (EI) is another critical factor that psychometric assessments can measure. In the tech industry, where professionals often work in high-stress and fast-paced environments, the ability to manage one’s emotions and understand others’ emotions is invaluable. High EI enables individuals to handle pressure, resolve conflicts, and build strong working relationships.

Assessing EI during the recruitment process can help employers identify candidates who are not only technically proficient, but also capable of navigating the emotional complexities of the workplace. This is particularly important for leadership positions, where managing teams and fostering a positive work environment are crucial responsibilities.

Reducing Bias and Enhancing Diversity

One of the significant advantages of using psychometric assessments in tech job recruitment is their ability to reduce hiring biases. Traditional recruitment methods, such as interviews and resume reviews, are susceptible to conscious and unconscious biases that can influence decision-making. Factors such as a candidate’s appearance, gender, or educational background might inadvertently sway an interviewer’s judgment.

Psychometric assessments provide a more objective evaluation, focusing solely on a candidate’s abilities and traits. This objectivity helps create a fairer hiring process, enabling companies to select the best candidates based on merit. Additionally, by reducing biases, psychometric assessments can enhance diversity within tech teams, leading to a more inclusive and innovative workplace.

Improving Retention and Reducing Turnover

Hiring the right candidates is not only about filling immediate vacancies, but also about ensuring long-term success. High employee turnover can be costly and disruptive for tech companies. Psychometric assessments contribute to better hiring decisions, which in turn can improve employee retention.

When candidates are well-matched to their roles and the company culture, they are more likely to be satisfied with their jobs and stay with the organization longer. This alignment leads to increased job satisfaction, higher productivity, and a stronger commitment to the company’s goals. By investing in psychometric assessments, tech companies can build a stable and dedicated workforce.

Implementing Psychometric Assessments in Recruitment

Integrating psychometric assessments into the recruitment process involves several steps. First, companies need to identify the specific skills and traits that are essential for success in the roles they are hiring for. This involves working with experts to develop customized psychometric assessment tools that align with the company’s needs.

Next, it is crucial to train hiring managers and recruiters on how to interpret and use the results of these assessments effectively. The insights gained from psychometric tests should complement other recruitment methods, such as technical assessments and interviews, to provide a holistic view of each candidate.

Finally, companies should continuously evaluate the effectiveness of their psychometric assessments and make necessary adjustments. This ongoing process ensures that the assessments remain relevant and continue to provide valuable insights into candidates’ potential.

Conclusion

In conclusion, psychometric assessments are an invaluable tool for tech job recruitment. They offer a scientifically validated and objective method to evaluate candidates’ cognitive abilities, personality traits, and emotional intelligence. By incorporating these assessments into the hiring process, tech companies can reduce biases, enhance diversity, improve retention, and ultimately select the best talent for their teams. As the tech industry continues to evolve, leveraging psychometric assessments will be crucial for building a capable and dynamic workforce ready to tackle the challenges of the future.
