A Beginner’s Guide To Starting A Successful Small Business

In 2020, things have been somewhat rocky for small business owners. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has meant that many small business owners haven’t been able to weather the storm of repeated closures and drastically lower footfall. Some, of course, have still survived, through a combination of good luck, resilience, and a solid business strategy. The latter has never been more important than it is in 2020; if you’re going to start a business this year or next, then you absolutely need to be able to prepare for the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Here’s our beginner’s guide on how you can start a successful small business in 2021.

Get enough cash together for several rainy days

One of the most important things about being a small business owner is being able to face potentially difficult times with confidence. You can only do that if you’ve got enough cash saved up to weather as many storms as possible. If you’re just starting your small business and you need some cash, it might be worth considering taking out an unsecured personal loan. This way, you can clear any debts you might have to your name, get some capital for starting your business, or inject the operation with a little money if it’s flagging somewhat. However you do it, make sure you’ve amassed enough money to be comfortable before starting your business.

Make sure your idea is bulletproof

Obviously, no small business idea is completely and utterly fool proof. However, you should try to ensure that your idea is as solid as it can possibly be. We can’t give you a concrete idea of what that should be, but it should complement your skill set and be an area in which you feel you would fit comfortably. Once you know what your idea is, do some research into other businesses in that field and try to understand their formula for success. Simultaneously, try to identify niches in that market that are underserved, because that’s where small businesses thrive best. If you have a solid idea at your business’ core, then it will always attract a market.

Create and adhere to a business plan

Your business plan will serve as the cornerstone of your entire operation. A successful business plan consists of a clearly delineated mission statement for your business (i.e. what you intend to provide and how you intend to provide it), along with the key operational parameters of your business and how you’re going to differentiate yourself from the competition. Of course, a business plan will change and shift over time, so it’s important to keep revisiting this document, but the core ideas behind your business should be absolute. Not deviating from these ideals is how you’ll attract and maintain a core customer base over time

Don’t neglect the legal aspect

The last thing you want as a small business owner is to get tied up in inconsequential (or, worse, significant) lawsuits that threaten to massively disrupt your business operations. It’s important to pay close attention to the legal situation in which your business will operate. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to hire an entire legal team to take care of this side of the business; just being au fait with the potholes you might run into should be enough as you begin operations. However, as your business increases in size, you may want to consider a dedicated legal team, because the number of potential legal grievances will increase exponentially as your business’ size does.

Create a strong brand

Unfortunately, a modern business isn’t particularly likely to succeed if it doesn’t have a strong, memorable brand behind it. Weaker brands will mean customers or clients won’t remember your business and will instead opt for competitors who have worked on this aspect more diligently. Remember to carry out the appropriate market research and try to understand your demographic in order to create your brand. After all, it won’t do you any favours using colloquial language if you’re a business-focused brand, and you won’t want to be overly professional as a retail outlet. Be sure that your brand matches the tone and mission of your business plan.

Sweat the small stuff

Registering your business, considering what kind of company structure you would like, and understanding the general ins and outs of business are all extremely important skills for a business owner. While you may have a dream and the will to execute that dream, that won’t be enough to get you through as a business owner. You’ll need a thorough understanding of how business operates and the minutiae of running a business. Even as you begin to delegate and hire more and more staff, you should never lose sight of the smaller details, because those could be what trip you up later down the line.

Hire a dedicated accountant

Although you should be sweating the small stuff in your business, believe us when we say that you will want to hire an accountant. Crunching numbers is an incredibly difficult and involved task, so it’s best left to the professionals. While it may initially seem like a difficult expenditure to justify, an accountant will pay for themselves eventually by identifying areas in which your cash flow could be optimised. This way, you can take care of the aspects that are important to you – branding, growing the business, networking, et cetera – and you can leave the mathematical side of the business to someone who understands it. Even if you’re skilled in accountancy, you may still want to consider an external hire, because it’s an awful lot of work to undertake alone

Review – The Urbanista London true wireless with ANC. #UrbanistaLondon #TWS #Tech

The Urbanista London are the latest on offer from the company and out of the gate these are the best implementation of ANC in True Wireless I have seen to date, Harder to do on earbuds than headphones they have got this one right and to top it off sound great too across the board but mainly with ANC turned on which will impede battery life, these laugh at the AIRPODS and cost less and fit like a charm too.

These come with a wireless charging case too which is excellent and again bringing the latest features to true wireless features costing less, We also have USB- C charging on deck too with around 25 hours of battery life with 5 hours per charge but with ANC on you get around 4/4.5 hours which is fine, I suggest leaving ANC on for optimal sound and experience and you of course get an ambient mode too.The charge case also offers a reset/pairing button too.

Controls are simple to use once you spend time on them, you have a small area on top where the urbanista branding is and here is where you need to tap, it is a small area but you will get the idea after some use like many touch based earbuds are today and you will be able to execute the commands in no time. .

The controls are as follows.

PLAY
Tap the logo (1) on the Left (L) earbud twice.
PAUSE – Tap the logo (1) on the Left (L) earbud twice.
VOLUME (+) – Tap the logo (1) on the Right (R) earbud.
VOLUME (-) – Tap the logo (1) on the Left (L) earbud.
ANSWER INCOMING CALL – Touch the logo (1) on the Left (L) or the Right (R) earbud twice.
END A CALL Touch the logo (1) on the Left (L) or the Right (R) earbud twice.
REJECT A CALL- Touch and hold either the logo (1) on the Left (L) or the Right (R) earbud.
SIRI – Touch the logo (1) on the Right (R) earbud twice.
ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING ON/OFF – Touch and hold the logo (1) on the Right (R) earbud for 2 seconds.
AMBIENT VOICE MODE ON/OFF Touch and hold the logo (1) on the Left (L) earbud for 2 seconds.

OK so you can see what is missing here, You cant skip or reverse tracks which is kind of annoying however it is not a huge deal for me, there is also no app support, someday Urbanista might develop one, The option not to skip or reverse tracks is an odd one for me left out but hey if you get the fantastic sound these deliver I do not honestly care it is all about sound with earbuds and these out of the box just hit that spot. You cant use these individually either which might be an issue for some.

They are super comfortable and will not budge either, this is another thing to factor in they also are not bulky and rest nicely giving you easy access to control them,When it comes to sound they have hit done it again they sound great, good bass, direction, generally fine across all soundstages and so on,I will put it this way ,put these in turn on ANC and feel immersed in the sound,Ideal for You Tube,Music and Netflix and so on you will be impressed ,trust me I test enough earbuds to know what it good and what it rubbish, these shine mainly with ANC on but take a battery hit.

Battery life is on par with their claims and it is fine, a bit lower than some competitors out there but it is no big deal with the case giving you around 20 hours of playtime so ideal for long commutes and travel, Urbanista have multiple earbuds out now on offer and deliver all the time improving each time and these are their best to date and give other a run for their money full stop costing you €149 euro plus not forgetting our discount code TECHBUZZIE at the link below.

Review – The Urbanista Stockholm Plus. #Tech #Urbanista #TWS

Urbanista is a brand I have been using some years now and have been consistent with their sound and build quality and they are progressing as time goes on when it comes to their products too which is good to see. Their latest instalment the Stockholm Plus are no different but will appeal to a different kind of folk.. Coming from their LONDON which are the best they have to offer now they are slightly toned down on volume and bass this time but overall give a solid performance and look well too and are lightweight and generally give you good value for money. You can check out the unboxing here for more info..

These come in several colours and with new drivers, chipset and microphones giving you a crisp clear sound with most controls available on the buds bar the volume control which has been left out again however not a huge deal for me. The controls are easy to use although some similar but you will manage no problem after some use these are touch sensitive rather than buttons remember. We go through all the motions in the video review below anyway.. Overall they give a decent sound performance when it comes to instruments, direction, voice and direction and calls are good yet the volume and bass this time is lower compared to their LONDON true wireless which for me is their best earbuds to date.

Create your own opera inspired song with Blob Opera #BlobOpera #Google

Blob Opera is a machine learning experiment by David Li in collaboration with Google Arts and Culture. This experiment plays four opera voices in real time, No singing skills required!

Google developed a machine learning model trained on the voices of four opera singers in order to create an engaging experiment for everyone, regardless of musical skills. Tenor, Christian Joel, bass Frederick Tong, mezzo‑soprano Joanna Gamble and soprano Olivia Doutney recorded 16 hours of singing. In the experiment you don’t hear their voices, but the machine learning model’s understanding of what opera singing sounds like, based on what it learnt from them.

How it works:
Drag the blobs up and down to change pitch. Or forwards and backwards for different vowel sounds. Another machine learning model lets the blobs respond to and harmonise your input in real time. Here is one I made –  Check it out it is fun..

Tech Review – iWatchpods i500 TWS and i500 TWS Pro #Tech #Audio #TWS

Clones are easy to find today and with demanding kids they want the best, the overpriced APPLE airpods which are not the best in the world in my book though some will argue that.  We have tried several pairs of these and more here and this company claims they are better than the other offerings out there, to an extent they are right especially with the pro version as you will see in the video review below.

We have both pair on offer from the company here and tested both out and both do a great job and the pros are really good and better than expected, I have found some pro models to be lacking in features but this pair does not and have ANC built in, Now when I say that it is not the best ANC in the world but it is there and works depending on your environment and you also get transparency mode too for those who commute or cycle with their earbud on even though you should not.

Below is the links for both products but check out the video review for more.. As always mentioned with clones I can not stand over how long they will last and from testing both these they seem solid and perhaps an alternative for parents to purchase for a stocking filler rather than spending silly money on the real thing.

Tech Review – MyMinipods #Tech #MiniPods

Recently I got these sent in the post to me and they are called minipods and true to form they are what they say on the tin but offer the same sound experince as expected from the larger sized ones available just about anywhere these days, After checking these out for two weeks now they are a decent set of true wireless earbuds that come in well under Apple pricing and are loud plus have all the features within however with the likes of clones how long they will last is something I cant comment on and never will and is always a risk when purchasing but overall they have served me fine still to this day and remember the cost element here and they are handy to have as a second pair or even a stocking filler this Christmas.

Check out the video below for more.

Planet Buddies Expands on Conservation Efforts with Major Charities. #PlanetBuddies

Planet Buddies, an environmentally conscious child friendly  accessory brand announces their first charitable partnerships in pledge to educate and support  conservation efforts and educate children through use of technology.

Successfully launching in the summer of 2020, Planet Buddies products were designed and created  specifically for children. The Planet Buddies brand was born out of a dedication in raising awareness  for endangered animals all over the world and educating children on what they can do to help.

Starting in January, the partnership will see an annual investment made to these two highly  regarded and respected UK based charities. Planet Buddies products will be split across the charities,  for example, water-based product packaging like ‘Noah the Whale’ will bare the charity logo and  support for the Marine Conservation Society. ‘Olive the Owl’ and land-based animals will carry the  World Land Trust logo and investments here will go towards specific programs like Keepers of the  Wild which supports many of their partner organisations to employ local men and women as  rangers, straight into conservation’s frontline.

“In partnering with the Marine Conversation Society and World Land Trust, we stay true to our core  values; supporting conservation efforts and educating future generations on their actions towards  the environment. At the same time, respecting and utilising the role technology plays in how Children  can learn with fun and engaging products” explains Adam Bailey, Marketing Director at Planet  Buddies. He continues “demand has exploded this year due to more children learning remotely and  parents making more considered purchases to protect and educate their young families at home”

The Planet Buddies product range includes a family of headphones, true wireless speakers and tablet  cushions, all representing endangered, vulnerable or threatened species including ‘Pepper the  Penguin’ and ‘Olive the Owl’. The products each have a story about its character, why they are  endangered and practical tips on what children can do to help protect all life on our planet such as  turning off lights when they leave a room.

Following on from their successful launch in September this year Planet Buddies are launching brand  new products to the market, all of which will be linked to the same wonderful colourful characters.  Fantastic products including Light Switch Stickers, Wardrobe Dividers, Lunch Bags and many more  additions to the already popular technology line.

Katharine Sharp – Corporate Partnerships Manager, Marine Conservation Society “We were thrilled when Planet Buddies approached us with an aim to work together and through the  sale of their wonderful products raise some much-needed funds for our work. Their products are not

only beautifully made and kind to the environment, but they encourage positive messaging around  how to care for and look after our planet, something which supports the work of our own Education  team. We are excited to work together to spread the word about how amazing our marine  environment is, and how important it is to look after it. A huge thank you to Planet Buddies for their  support.”

Tracey Butler – Corporate Communications Manager, World Land Trust

“World Land Trust (WLT) is pleased to be working in partnership with Planet Buddies as we share the  value of educating future generations on the importance of protecting the environment. Working  together we can take positive action to save threatened habitat from deforestation, to protect the  home of endangered wildlife and address climate change, and we are grateful for Planet Buddies’  support of WLT’s conservation work”

Key Safety and Eco Conscious Features Include:

  • 100% recyclable packaging, with no plastic used
  • Promotes good posture and reduces neck and upper back strength (Tablet cushions only) Child-safe limited to 85db to protect hearing (Headphones only)

Tech Review – Edifier G2 II USB gaming headphones. #Edifier #Gaming #Tech

Edifier recently launched the G2 II gaming headset and we have been testing it out and as expected with any product from Edifier no matter the price point they deliver on the audio aspect even at entry level prices which is the same for their TWS earbuds, One of their cheapest earbuds for example the X3 TWS that come in at approx. 35 euros deliver on sound and quality at this price point and excels others. With their gaming headphone range this is no different and this is an affordable headset that delivers.

There is a simple inline control panel that allows you to turn on/off the mic and switch on/off the RGB effects and a volume wheel on the side it could not be easier to use although there is no EQ built in for tone adjustment which is fine the sound that comes from the headset is well balanced and will immerse you into the gameplay and blocks all external noise. Comfort would be another factor here to weigh in on as most gamers spend hours on their gameplay and these are fine here too with the soft cups and headband , The mic is good too with clear sound both ends and overall it will be an enjoyable experience for whoever picks these up.

Main Features:

  • 7.1 surround sound offering 360° sound positioning, accelerating your advantage.
  • 50mm driver unit produces clear sound and excellent low-frequency performance.
  • Noise-cancelling detachable microphone for uninterrupted game play.
  • Dynamic RGB light effects.
  • Comfortable wearing for longevity.
