Tesco Mobile security check ruffles a few feathers on @boards #TescoMobile

Tesco Mobile which is an MVNO are having a hard time of it over on the hugely resourceful and popular boards.ie website right now due to a query from a user of the Tesco Mobile service when a user and category mod spurious was contacted by a friend with the following. Just for transparency purposes we spoke to the original poster last night about this and agreed to let us post this and agreed to keep the user that’s having the problem anonymous.

Was contacted by a very upset friend today who has recently been very ill and is still in the ‘attending hospital appointments’ phase.

Her doctor and some other friends informed her they were having difficulty contacting her on her Tesco Mobile PAYG. She got on to Tesco mobile who told her her account had been randomly selected ‘for security purposes’ and until she sent them a scan of her passport they would not reconnect her. She explained to a person named ‘Con’ (appropriately enough) in Customer Service in Waterford that she often gets short notice of an available slot for treatment and has to be ready to go. He refused to let her speak to someone higher up the line. She has had no notice of any of this in writing.

Subsequently spurious replied with legitimate questions in the opening post..

Can you tell me …
a) is this a scam or actually something Tesco Mobile do? Cut paying customers off for no reason?
b) can she be reconnected IMMEDIATELY pending the sending of the passport scan?
c) She owes Tesco no money whatsoever as she is PAYG, what justification is there for treating her like this?

Tesco then replied with the following and what seems to be a repetitive copy and paste format continued throughout the thread with no conclusion to date,this is going on 24hrs now..

Hi spurious,

I’m sorry to hear of the inconvenience caused by this. In order to maintain the security of all of our customers, we do regularly perform routine security checks. Once the customer in question has provided the proofs requested by our Security department, we can have the account unsuspended promptly, but we can only discuss exact information regarding this matter with the account holder.

As I have already advised, such procedures are carried out to maintain the security of all Tesco Mobile customers, both prepay and billpay. Suspension due to a general security check would not be a supervisor issue, and our Customer Security team are a back office team who do not speak directly with customers. Our Customer Care representatives are trained in dealing with and advising on such issues.

If the customer wishes to contact us directly to discuss her account further, we can be PMed on our Tesco Mobile: Reps page by clicking here – LINK!

Regards,
Shauna

Speaking to the actual account holder is perfectly fine and its a legal obligation for data protection purposes but apparently Tesco Mobile can just cut you off  and then you need to provide information such as a passport or some form of ID,In my many years as a mobile customer across many networks not once have I heard or have had this requirement brought to my attention nor have I ever been asked…

Tesco under their terms and conditions which are outline below on HOW they can disconnect your service……in bold would be most relevant to the original post..

1.3.4 How we can suspend or limit the Services
We may suspend or restrict your use of the Services immediately if:

  • 1.3.4.1 You do any of the things listed above which would allow us to end our Agreement;
  • 1.3.4.2 You breach our Agreement (for example, you fail to pay us any Charges when due);
  • 1.3.4.3 You breach any legal requirements which may apply to your use of the Services;
  • 1.3.4.4 You tell us that your Mobile Phone or SIM Card has been lost or stolen;
  • 1.3.4.5 We need to carry out repairs, maintenance or improvements to the Services (and we will try to restore the Services as soon as we can);
  • 1.3.4.6 We are told to by the Government, the emergency services or any other competent or lawful authority;
  • 1.3.4.7 You are abusive, make threats, repeatedly cause a nuisance or annoyance or otherwise act illegally towards our staff or property, or that of our agents; or
  • 1.3.4.8 You do anything or permit anyone else to do anything which we reasonably think adversely impacts Tesco Mobile; or
  • 1.3.4.9 It appears to us that there is an unusual use of the Tesco Mobile Service (for example, the volume or destination of calls increases significantly).
  • 1.3.4.10 Where more than one user is set up under an Account, we may suspend use by any or all of those users.

User 8-10 below also points out some valid replies to the above…

How can the destination of calls increase? Is this saying that there is a limit in number of phone numbers you can contact off it? Or number of countries you can call? And if you increase the number of numbers or number of countries you call over this threshold you can be suspended?

Volume of calls maybe, though I don’t see how that would affect the network with a single handset, and I don’t see how it affects PAYG as presumeably they can’t keep calling forever or their credit will be used up.

But an increase in call destinations sounds very vague – interested if Tesco Mobile reps can help the understanding of this – is it the number of different phones you can call on PAYG limited? And what does ‘increased significantly’ mean?

For instance I generally use my work phone for nearly everything but call some relatives from my personal one. So that is the single call destination that I have, so I maybe call 2/3 destinations (different numbers) in a month.

Then if next month I’m using my personal phone for work and I call 200 different numbers in a month off it – that’s a significant increase in call destination – would I be cut off because of this? What is the threshold for the destination increase?

That sums up this case pretty much for now,have you ever had anything happen like this,As mentioned I personally have never heard this happen before myself and the answers seem pretty vague and there is a lack of total transparency here..To be fair the reps here can only do so much but this is something that needs clearing up..

Here’s the Blackberry #PRIV #Marshmallow update review by @VicenteA_George

At the beginning of the week, Blackberry gave us awesome news. The update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the BB PRIV was ready and was starting to roll out globally.

Us here at TechBuzzIreland are big fans of the PRIV and you can see why HERE, also you can see our full review HERE.

This is quite impressive as the blackberry team just started the beta testing for it less than 3 weeks ago.

We’ve been using the MM update as beta since the beginning but now its available to everyone, we can give our full review of this update.

First of all you need to know, if you’re a beta tester you don’t need to do anything to have the final release as is the same you’re carrying right now.

Overall it is a welcome update, but as weird as it sounds this device seemed to be built to run MM to start with.

Some of the improvements like DOZE are here and with the built-in apps permissions the DTEK suite is now a it’s full power.

We also have new keyboard features the depends on your preference could be great or not.

And last but not least: the camera software was also updated to add two new features.

So let’s start!

Performance:

The device was really fluid to start with, but since the update you now have faster transitions and animations between screens.

Statically looks exactly the same, but is now easier to make changes on the launcher (if you’re still using BlackBerry launcher)

Some users reported heat issues on lollipop, some of which I faced myself, but were mostly on heavily intense apps like a game with unreal engine which demand lots of graphic consumption, and just after a while.

After the update, ram management seems to be addressed and even though you can feel the warmth is nowhere near it was on LL.

The battery on the PRIV and in any other smartphone is something subjective, as the use of it vary from one user to other.

But in general you’ll get a full and maybe a little more of usage, with the doze feature the battery consumption is really good.

Security:

The PRIV security is one of the selling points of the device, previously commanded by DTEK now gains a boost with the granular permission that MM offers.

Going in the app will show you “how secure your device is” and right on top of other options you’ll see “app permission” which takes you to individual software or hardware components that have been used by each app

So, you can see if an app is accessing your location a 100 times in less than a day and proceed to denied that access.

Also if you were using the picture password as your main lock screen you’ll be asked to add a pin or a pattern to improve the functionality. This secondary step will be asked in some particular functions or after you reboot your phone.

As an extra, if you look in settings and about phone, you’ll see that now you have the May security patch.

HUB:

The HUB is the main source of information (or that’s what BlackBerry says) on your phone.

Now after MM is more integrated within the phone software with extra notifications.

Now there’s support for more apps like IG, Skype and even Slack.

If you’re one of the PRIV adopters who’s not coming from a BB10 device I strong recommend you to make used of it. As the productivity edge it’s interlace with it and if you use the Outlook calendar as well the Google one you’ll have the two on the glance screen of the edge.

Keyboard

The PRIV’s keyboards are the other selling point, as is the only flagship phone to sport a Physical KB built-in as well as the Virtual keyboard.

The software that goes along the phone’s KB is good. But now you’ll have Swipe functions to use, not only on the virtual keyboard but the physical too.

Make use of it has a drawback, you lose the “swipe left to erase” feature.

This “new” gesture can be turn on and off on both sides in the options menu, under “keyboard settings

They are independent from each other so, as me, you can have it on for the virtual and off on the physical one.

Camera

The camera on the PRIV is good, maybe not one of the top 3 but definitely a good performer.

The software received two new additions in the form of video recording, one is a well-known feature on flagships phones but which was missing from the first release, this is the 120fps slow-motion but you need to have in mind that there’s no audio on this mode.

The second mode added to it is a not so common 4K recording at 24fps which promises “cinematic quality” to your videos.

Something I was personally waiting was manual controls through the Camera2 API but I guess we’ll have to wait for another update.

Another cool feature added is the ability to launch the camera from sleep mode with double pressing the power button as the nexus devices.

Conclusion

The PRIV a great device, made even better with Marshmallow, the inclusion of DOZE, and the boost to DTEK with individual apps permissions are going to make feel you finally have the phone you paid for.

There’s work to be done though, you can find a little lag with some apps and the camera software needs more work.

The Android 6.0.1 update is available since April 26th for PRIV owners who shop directly from ShopBlackberry and Amazon with models:

STV100-1 in the U.S. and Canada

STV100-4 in the UK and France

The carrier models such as STV100-2 and STV100-3 will have to wait till MAy 3 to start recieving the update.

Overall the update is greatly welcome, fixed some of the issues you could find on Android 5.0 and gives you really functional extras. But with the next version of android just around the corner. The real question now will be:

Is the PRIV ready for Android N?

Get home safely with #Sentinelle for Windows Mobile. #WindowsMobile

Safety is important and after a night out or being in a location you are unfamiliar with you might need some assistance on how to get home and with this app you can have some extra help at hand,this is like an app we featured last year only this time for Windows Phone users.The app we spoke about last time round was Companion app

Sentinelle offers a similar array of features in the app to aide ones journey back to their home or wherever they maybe travelling to..

Sentinelle lets you ask your friends to walk you home safely. They will be able to watch your position in real time and get warned if something wrong is happening. If you’re being late, if there is a swerve from your journey or if you’re running low battery, your friends will be notified within a second. They will be asked to contact you to make sure everything is fine

How does it work?

As soon as you add a friend to your journey, he receives a text message containing instructions to be able to track your position and to get notified instantly. Your friend does not even need any mobile application.

Functionalities

Instantly reports your position in real time to your friends. – Automatically send notifications to your friends (you’re being late, you’re running low battery or there is a swerve from your route). – Send messages. – Track route data (battery state, network state, speed). – Save your previous journeys into history.

Birdly Is A Virtual Reality Flight Simulator #VR Fly like a bird. #Birdly

VR is the thing this year with headset being the main player,however VR idea is different where the user will lie on a platform and then use a VR headset so it may be a cumbersome piece to have in your house unless you have the room and the cost is another thing which is not yet known..This does look like a great idea offering a real immersive experience but looking a what is required to use it it will be limited audience to some extent,as it is VR content is still lacking despite the big push for it..

Max Rheiner  who is an artist and software developer from Switzerland  says  The virtual reality simulator can stimulate the senses of the user. This gives rise to a feeling of one flying in the sky. He went on to say that people who wish to fly can do so with no training at all. The experience of flying is based on dreams that people have of experiencing as they fly.

There is a vast amount of keyboards available today for users,some are great and some not so great and companies now seem to be jumping on the bandwagon with keyboards but the overall experience does not cut it when it comes to features,this one happens to be one of them but those though who like emojis will enjoy them if they are in a group and all have the app installed,and to be fair there is plenty of Starbucks fans out there..The app is free and available on Android and iOS.
