First Look – Xiaomi Redmi 10 from Tesco Mobile

Today we take a first in depth look at one of tesco mobile latest handsets on offer and it is the Xiaomi Redmi 10 which is also a first for me to see, in the hand this handset feels nice and is solid and it is not an expensive device by any means and loaded with a decent spec sheet too, it has got a decent rear camera system on the back with a not so large hump like other brands insist of having there now and moving them around. We have got a 50/8/2 and 2 MP array of cameras on the rear and a front facing camera at 8MP. We also have a large 6.5 inch display and the speakers are decently loud too.

If that is not enough for the camera fans this has also got a 5000mAh battery to power it which is ample enough in today’s standards and also we have got 128GB storage which can be bumped up to 512GB with an SD card. We also have a headphone jack which is not seen much these days, also this has a fingerprint sensor on the side and comes with a charger in the box and a case so you are protected straight away which all in all seems like a decent package..

Tesco Ireland supported by OLIO App in its quest to further redistribute surplus food in Dublin

Tesco Ireland has partnered with food sharing app OLIO to help reduce food waste in stores in Dublin by redistributing more of its perfectly edible surplus at the end of each day amongst members of the local community.

The pilot programme involves nine Dublin stores, with 250 volunteers already signed up to OLIO in Ireland.

A global initiative, the OLIO scheme works with over 35,000 volunteer ‘Food Waste Heroes’, who visit stores to collect surplus food nearing its best before or use-by date and redistribute it to the local community. Tesco is the first major Irish grocery retailer to join the movement.

The new partnership builds on Tesco’s existing surplus food donations programme, powered by FoodCloud. OLIO will operate where food related charitable organisations are unable to collect.

Tackling food waste has been a major part of Tesco’s sustainability strategy since 2009, when it made a commitment to stop sending food waste to landfill. To date, the equivalent of over 14 million meals in surplus food has been donated to almost 400 charitable organisations and community groups from Tesco stores and distribution centres, in Ireland.

The existing in-store food surplus programme will continue to benefit FoodCloud causes. However, in some areas, there are limited charitable organisations to take food surplus. This new partnership, where OLIO Food Waste Heroes will come to the rescue and collect surplus food, will help to further reduce the amount of food going to waste. The partnership comes a month from Christmas, when causes and communities groups are even more in need of support through surplus food.

Tesco Communications Director, Rosemary Garth said: “We are very proud of our pioneering food waste strategy, leading the way since 2014 when we became the first retailer to partner nationally with FoodCloud to roll out an innovative surplus donations programme which now helps hundreds of community groups every week.

“We are acutely aware that food waste is a major contributing factor to climate change, and in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, we are committed to tackling food waste from farm to fork by 2030.

“We want to make sure that all surplus food is being managed, that it shouldn’t go to waste and where people who need it have access to it. I am confident that our partnership with the OLIO movement will help us further achieve our goal of making sure that no good food goes to waste at Tesco.”

OLIO Co-founder, Tessa Clarke said: Our partnership with Tesco means that more people than ever before will be able to benefit from access to surplus food, and we are happy to expand our programme into Ireland.

“They will also be joining our community of neighbours who not only support one another, but also believe that every little bit helps in the fight against food waste.”

With two weeks of the trial underway, the work with OLIO and its Food Waste Heroes has resulted in an average 46% increase in suitable edible surplus food being redistributed in the Dublin area.

Tesco Ireland, through its partnership with FoodCloud, works with almost 400 charity partners and has donated over 14.5 million meals to people in need since 2014, saving 19.5 million kilograms of carbon emissions from being produced through the transport and processing of this food as waste.

OLIO recruit local teams of Food Waste Heroes, who are then trained on safe collection, storage & distribution of surplus food. The Food Waste Hero collects surplus food from their local Tesco stores at a scheduled time. The food is brought to the Food Waste Heroes’ home, where it is offered to the local community via the OLIO app.

Stores involved in the OLIO trial are: Aungier St, College Green, Leonard’s Corner, Parnell St, Pearse St, Temple Bar, Thomas St, Dorset St, and Jervis St.

Six million batteries recycled through top five supermarkets last year. #WEEE #EarthDay #Recycling

Almost six million batteries were recycled through five supermarkets last year as more people used their grocery shop to do their bit for the planet. Despite the encouraging data, for every 10 AA batteries sold on the market, only four are returned for recycling, with 20% in a recent survey admitting to dumping used batteries in general waste bins.

To coincide with Earth Day today WEEE Ireland is urging the public to gather old batteries for recycling and avoid dumping them in bins, from where they end up in incinerators, meaning precious metals are lost for good.

Aldi leads the charge

WEEE Ireland collected half of the huge haul from Aldi stores, which led the charge on 3.2million, double that of its German rival Lidl on 1.6million.

The e-waste recycling scheme also picked up 850,000 used batteries from Tesco and 224,000 from SuperValu, while Dunnes Stores prevented over 97,000 ending up in landfill.

In total, the equivalent of 21 million AA batteries were recycled by householders in 2020 through retailers and civic amenity sites – an average of four for everyone in Ireland.

“Earth Day is an opportunity for people to stop for a moment to think about how they can make a difference. Recycling batteries is as easy as taking them to your nearest supermarket or recycling centre and plays a huge part in helping protect the environment,” said Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland.

Six million batteries were recycled through Ireland’s main supermarkets last year, but Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland, warns that 20% of us are ignoring the green message and dumping used batteries in general waste bins. Picture: Conor McCabe Photography.

“Rolling lockdowns saw people use more home grooming devices such as electric shavers, games consoles, remote controls, kids’ toys, power tools and fitness equipment – resulting in more batteries being used and many of these ended up in drawers.

“For the millions of batteries not recycled properly every year, we lose precious elements and important resources that could be used again in manufacturing. The hazardous material they release also has an impact on human health and our environment.”

For every battery recycled, WEEE Ireland makes a contribution towards Laura Lynn – and it has confirmed a further €40,000 donation to the children’s hospice.

The gesture will provide much-needed overnight respite stays for 19 children and their families at the hospice this year and brings its overall donation to Laura Lynn to €480,000 since the partnership first began back in 2011.

WEEE Ireland is the country’s largest e-waste recycling scheme, representing most of the Irish battery industry and household, electrical and electronic industry, which has a producer responsibility to organise and finance the environmental management of their products at end of life.

Client Solutions powers Tesco Mobile Ireland into the cloud in €2.5 million deal. #TescoMobile #Cloud #ClientSolutions

Client Solutions, one of Ireland’s leading technology partner companies, is proud to announce the latest development in its ongoing partnership with Tesco Mobile Ireland. As part of a recent three-year digital transformation deal, Client Solutions will migrate key Tesco Mobile customer-facing systems to the cloud on Microsoft Azure, to enable the telecoms network to reach its ambitious potential. The project, which is already underway, is estimated to be worth around €2.5 million and scheduled for completion by July 2022.

Tesco Mobile Ireland currently has over 400,000 customers, making it the country’s fourth largest mobile service provider. It is also Ireland’s largest Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO).  As competition increases in this sector, Tesco Mobile Ireland has engaged the teams at Client Solutions on several occasions to stay ahead of the curve.

Pictured at the annoucement was Leo Murphy, Sales Director, Client Solutions and Geoff Byrne, chairman, Tesco Mobile Ireland.
Pic Orla Murray SON Photo

Having built up an expert knowledge of Tesco Mobile’s business requirements, Client Solutions devised an ambitious plan to re-platform and transform the operation. Among the elements being addressed are:

  • Improved Customer Self-Service Care: Mytescomobile.ie, the public portal that allows customers to access account balances, top-up, switch plans and manage their account
  • Enhancement of Award-Winning Mobile Virtual Network Analytics – Business Intelligence platform including data management, analytics and forecasting
  • RETAIN – A rich suite of applications used by Tesco Mobile’s Waterford based Care Team to serve customers
  • Introduction of Hosted Finance System – SAP for financial management

For Tesco Mobile customers, this transformation means the public-facing portal mytescomobile.ie will offer increased control and transparency while enabling the customer care team to further improve their ability to serve customer needs. For Tesco Mobile Ireland, the suite of solutions will allow their teams to better understand the user experience and ultimately improve the service to their growing customer base.

Sales Director at Client Solutions Leo Murphy said: “It’s fantastic to be part of Tesco Mobile’s continued growth. Their ambition matches our innovative approach to designing future-proof solutions and this cloud transformation programme in conjunction with Microsoft Azure, is truly transformative for them and their customers.”

Geoff Byrne, chairman, Tesco Mobile Ireland said “We’re pleased to continue our ongoing relationship with Client Solutions. The innovation, creativity and value for money products that Tesco Mobile brings to the Irish market means our customer base continues to grow. We look forward to working with Client Solutions to continue to serve our mobile customers a little better every day.”

“Client Solutions is a great example of an innovative partner who understand the challenges of digitally transforming organisations,” said Denis Meade, Partner Lead, Microsoft Ireland. “They fundamentally understand how to help organisations manage this complex process, with a consultative approach that will ensure their client’s successful digital evolution. This announcement with Tesco Mobile demonstrates their capability to successfully deliver value and change for their customers.”

#SMS is dying,and Irish Mobile Market share is changing.#Ireland #MobileTech #JimbosTechBlog

The mobile market in Ireland is a tough spot, also becoming more competitive but with Ireland still highly over priced compared to our EU counterparts its a tough business with new things coming, new plans, new ideas and in the future new competition but is this all good albeit we are expensive compared to our friends over the seas.

Taking into account we are a small country hence a small market we have breached the human population count with mobile phones, what does that mean??

Well according to statistics Ireland has just passed a 122.5% penetration rate last December, what that means in simple terms many of us have more than one phone, many of us tend to have back up phones just in case this been one reason, another would be people that have a personal and work phone, with phones now so cheap some can be called throwaway devices ,an example of that is say you are heading out for a night and you have a cheap phone and could not care less if you lost it,its a device you can be contacted on simple as that, and lets be honest how many people loose phones on the weekend or on night out,its happened to us all,and yes to me too…

SMS is dying its fact some think it different, well i have news for you it is,up until this year sms was dropping off a 10% rate annually this time round its  now down 27.6% and why? Its because of messaging apps, its funny how we are and can be still charged for sms in 2014 its been lucrative for operators over the years but now its slacking off at a drastic rate,In fairness we all have some free sms or bundle in mobile plans, free network to network sms etc and weekend rates with free sms,but because the market is so diverse people change network and sms may not be in the plan or you have a certain amount free, same applies to data which is now the money maker in mobile another thing for consumers to think about is data allowance..

Once we go over our sms or data allowances in any plan on any network its ching ching for the networks, always been the case, for a long time always will be but you can be clever to customize your plan or pick one that suits you so you do not go over your data, sms, voice allowance,we will be discussing this soon…

Remember sms apps run off data and wifi so this is where you can be smart should you have wifi at home in work or free public wifi in your area etc….

MMS is has also slacked off due to prices incurred on sending pictures etc, this is why messaging apps are taking over here too, would you spend 30 cent to send a photo when you can send one free over wifi or data? No it think not..

MARKET SHARE.

Lyca mobile now has a share of 4.5% relativity new but no so new they have entered the charts, they can offer great deals well done to them…

Tesco mobile have a 2.5% steak in the irish market…

Meteor and Emobile have a joint share of 21% in the market (sister networks)

O2 have lost share in the market share there remains a certain uncertainty here as the  acquisition  deal with three remains open, but soon we will know all about it.They have a 24% share in the market..

Three is at 10.1% if three take over 02 later in the year it will give them a massive jump of up to 40% approx..

Vodafone Ireland remain at tops still with a massive 39% while Vodafone is slightly more expensive offering the best coverage seems to be working, but all networks have blackspots, all networks still have to work on 3G and some commuter belts,as an example the M3 has bad coverage sometimes none or offering only edge as in data connection.

You can have a look in more detail here as to the latest figures direct from COMGREG
