Vodafone, first telco to sign Corporate Power Purchase Agreement in Ireland

Vodafone Ireland has signed a new Corporate Power Purchasing Agreement (CPPA) with energy supplier Flogas, along with its infrastructure partner Vantage Towers.

This agreement allows Vodafone to directly purchase renewable electricity from the Derrynadivva Wind Farm located in Mayo. Vodafone is the first telco in Ireland to sign a CPPA.

The investment of €6million is part of the company’s sustainability goals to achieve net zero across its full value chain by 2040. Combined with other agreements Vodafone has in place, 100% of its Irish operations are matched with certificates of renewable energy sources in Ireland.

The energy secured within this agreement gives Vodafone access to clean, high quality and affordable renewable electricity for its extensive network of cables that deliver mobile and fixed services to customers across Ireland. As part of this agreement, the company’s infrastructure partners, Vantage Towers will also receive renewable energy from the Derrynadivva Wind Farm.

Amanda Nelson, CEO at Vodafone Ireland said: “We are proud of the steps we’re taking to not only support our customers to be greener but also green our own operations. Today’s announcement is an investment in Ireland and its renewable energy industry. This is a significant step towards our own ambitious net zero targets.’’

Brian McHugh, Managing Director at Vantage Towers Ireland said: “Vantage Towers’ infrastructure network is totally powered by renewable energy, in line with our global ESG agenda. Sustainability is a necessity, and this agreement with Flogas is a further commitment to minimizing the impact of our business on the environment, and a continued investment in Ireland’s natural generating capability.’’

Pat Brett, Director at Derrynadivva Wind Farm Ltd said: “We are thrilled that Derrynadivva Wind Farm in Co Mayo continues to play a pivotal role in Ireland’s transition to a sustainable energy future. By delivering clean, renewable wind energy to some of the nation’s largest companies, we are not only helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also supporting these businesses in their commitment to more efficient and responsible energy consumption.”

James Temple, Renewables Manager at Flogas, said: “The CPPA with Vodafone Ireland underscores the accelerating commitment of Irish companies to increase their use of carbon-free energy and lead in renewable energy adoption. As a leading provider of clean energy CPPAs, Flogas is dedicated to enhancing the economic feasibility of renewable projects and advancing Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Vodafone’s sustainability strategy also focuses on reducing its energy consumption. In Ireland, the company uses an Intelligent Energy Management System. This is a system in which a machine learning algorithm across the 4G network analyses traffic patterns in real-time, allowing Vodafone reduce congestion and ultimately reduce energy consumption by 10 to 15%.

Vodafone Ireland also provides ways for customers be more sustainable including ‘Fix & Go’ for repairs and upgrades to extend the lifecycle of phones, as well as eSIMs which reduce carbon emissions by removing the need to manufacture and ship plastic, and a variety of eco accessories.

In 2022, Vodafone became the first telco in Ireland to offer a device trade-in service which has been very well received by customers, with over 35,000 devices returned to Vodafone to date. The initiative offers customers up to €400 for old smartphone devices which customers can use as store credit towards the purchase of a new device or receive payment directly into their bank account. After the device is traded in Vodafone ensures each device is refurbed, recycled or repurposed, as part of our commitment to a circular economy.

Harnessing the power of AI: a new era for business productivity and efficiency

The technology landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, comparable in impact to the rise of smartphones in the mid-00’s. While we’ve had a constant stream of technological advancements since then, none have had the same transformative impact as the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI isn’t just another tech trend or ‘phase’; it’s a fundamental reshaping of the way in which we live and work. Tara Gale, Client Solutions Country Lead, Dell Technologies tells us more

The transformational impact of AI has been recognised by Government in its National AI Strategy and National Digital Strategy which aims to have 75% of enterprises in Ireland using AI by 2030.

For businesses, embracing AI is no longer optional and empowering workforces to adopt it into everyday practices is crucial. But success really hinges on providing them with the tools they need to harness its full potential. Refreshing PC estates across organisations is essential for achieving this and this promises multiple benefits from enhanced productivity and efficiency to ensuring competitive advantage.

Analysts are predicting that with an AI-enabled PC, workers can benefit from tools that are more responsive to their needs than ever before. Technology providers too are promising that these devices represent a significant leap beyond traditional computing, offering a potent blend of processing power and intelligent features that can redefine and improve processes across organisations. A refresh cycle of this nature can offer workers an immediate, tangible benefit from incorporating AI into daily processes – all while leaders plan for more comprehensive AI strategies to drive long-term growth.

But despite the significant benefits that the devices have to offer, there is still hesitation among business leaders to fully invest. Looking into this more closely, we understand that there are numerous barriers to more widespread adoption.

Cost and investment justification

According to Dell Technologies’ latest Innovation Catalysts Study, the main barriers to adoption are uncertainty, cost concerns and the fact that established use cases are still in development. This has resulted in one in two Irish businesses struggling to keep pace with advancements in Generative AI (GenAI).

The novelty and rapid evolution of the technology can make long-term planning difficult, especially in cases where AI’s benefits aren’t immediately clear. This makes it difficult to justify the potentially substantial upfront investment without a clear and immediate return on investment (ROI).

At the same time, our own research has revealed a widespread awareness  that AI will play a transformative role in industries with 62% investing in AI-optimised technology to enhance the work experience. Businesses are accepting that integration of AI tools is soon to become inevitable and largely unavoidable. It also became apparent in our research that businesses in Ireland are broadly positive about the ability of AI-powered machines to significantly augment human capabilities.

As we look towards a future defined by AI, businesses must embrace change and seriously consider the transformative power of AI PCs to empower their workforce.

Enhancing Human Potential

AI-enabled PCs are not just about raw computing power. They are designed to amplify human ingenuity.

These devices act as intelligent partners that can streamline workflows, automate repetitive processes, and provide instant access to information. This allows more time for strategic thinking and creative problem solving, which are crucial for driving innovation and achieving business success in today’s competitive landscape.

Professionals can explore new ideas, experiment with different approaches, and actively develop cutting-edge solutions that drive competitive advantage. Increased productivity and efficiencies in this way lead to faster turnaround times, improve project outcomes and a better utilisation of the available resources.

Similarly, features such as Copilot+ embedded within AI PCs also provide instant access to information and insights that can help humans to make more informed decisions. It can quickly gather relevant data, analyse it, and present it in a clear and concise manner.

This empowers professionals to make smarter, data-driven decisions while mitigating risks and optimise outcomes.

Unprecedented Productivity Gains

Automating repetitive tasks and streamlining work also has the benefit of reducing the cognitive load on the workforce. This can lead to a reduction in stress levels and improved engagement for enhanced productivity and innovative thinking.

The seamless multitasking enabled by AI- PCs further empowers professionals to effortlessly juggle multiple tasks for uninterrupted productivity and enhanced focus.

AI-intensive tasks, such as image recognition, natural language processing, and machine learning are particularly beneficial for professionals who need to work on multiple projects or applications simultaneously. For example, a designer can simultaneously edit high-resolution images, run 3D rendering software, and communicate with clients via video conferencing, all without experiencing any lag or performance issues.

Maximising ROI with Enhanced Services

Knowing that return on investment after an AI PC refresh is a major concern, it’s imperative to prioritise a seamless transition that maximises value and minimises disruption.

Partners that facilitate connection to a wider ecosystem of software and expertise can be a huge support through the transition. They can assist with strategic planning and deployment, using their deep understanding of AI technologies and best practices to help organisations avoid common pitfalls and minimize any costly downtime.

Similarly, proactive monitoring and maintenance services provided by partners ensure optimal performance at all times. These services include regular software updates, hardware diagnostics, and remote support, ensuring that AI PCs are always operating at peak efficiency.

Dell Tech Forum 2024

The future of business lies in embracing AI, and AI PCs are essential to unlocking this future. By partnering with Dell, organisation can empower their workforce and fully harness the potential of AI PCs to drive business success.

ABLIC launches the S-82K5B/M5B Series; ABLIC’s first secondary protection ICs with cascade function for power tools and e-bikes

These ICs reduce voltage monitoring board size, provide the industry’s highest level of accuracy and contribute to improved safety

ABLIC a group company of MinebeaMitsumi Inc., has launched the S-82K5B/M5B Series secondary protection ICs for 3 to 5 serially connected cells, which are ABLIC’s first secondary protection ICs with an integrated cascade function that can reduce the number of components required for monitoring of batteries with 6 or more serially connected cells by approximately 30% compared to conventional products.
Secondary protection ICs are used in a wide range of applications which require high voltage such as power tools, vacuum cleaners, and e-bikes, and applications that require a high degree of safety.

Secondary protection ICs are used in combination with protection fuses which blow when an external signal is received. When an overcharge occurs, a signal from the secondary protection IC causes the fuse to blow and break the charging current path to protect connected devices. Conventional secondary protection ICs could monitor batteries with up to 5 serially connected cells but required a large number of external components to monitor larger numbers of serially connected cells.

The new S-82K5B/M5B Series launched today is a secondary protection IC for 3 to 5 serially connected cells with the following features: (1) A cascade function (a function which enables connection protection of more batteries than the maximum number of batteries that a single protection IC can protect) which makes it possible to carry out voltage monitoring of rechargeable batteries with 6 or more serially connected cells using far fewer components than conventional products; (2) an open detection circuit (*1) which detects communication failures between ICs to enable safer voltage monitoring; (3) a lineup of two products to ensure that we can flexibly respond to customer needs: the S-82K5B Series with ±20mV overcharge detection voltage accuracy, and the S-82M5B with the industry’s highest (*2) accuracy of ±15mV.

Going forward, ABLIC will continue to leverage our technology and knowhow to develop lithium-ion battery protection ICs with even greater accuracy and higher performance and to release products for applications in a wide range of fields.

Trapped Inside: Solving Tesla’s Power Outage and Vehicle Lock-In Problems

The ever-evolving automotive industry is no stranger to the revolutionary designs and eco-conscious vision of Tesla. However, owners are concerned about the safety and convenience of electric vehicles, particularly older users who are less tech-savvy. Instances of unexpected power outages have left residents trapped, struggling to locate and use the manual door unlock mechanism. While the Tesla app can provide a solution in some cases, it often means shattering a window in others. In such cases, contacting a nearby auto locksmith service may be the only solution. In this article, we will look closer at the recent lock-in problems Tesla users are experiencing.

Recent Tesla Lock-In Incidents

An unfortunate incident highlighting Tesla’s lock-in problem involved a 73-year-old man from Arizona. On a scorching June day with temperatures soaring to 100 degrees, his Tesla car experienced a power failure while he was inside. He found himself trapped within his Model Y. According to the man, the ordeal began in his garage when all the car’s functions, including the glove box and door locks, suddenly ceased to work. With the windows unable to roll down and his unfamiliarity with the car’s manual lock release mechanism, he endured sweltering heat for approximately 20 minutes.

Thankfully, when he reached out to his sister, her Tesla app came to the rescue, allowing the door to be unlocked. Although one of the car’s windows had to be shattered, he escaped just in the nick of time. Being trapped in the car for more than an hour would have been a disastrous ordeal. Only afterward did he realize the Tesla Model Y had experienced a sudden power loss due to its separate 12v battery running out of charge.

In a separate incident, a nine-year-old child and her mother found themselves stranded in a 2018 Tesla Model 3 when it unexpectedly lost all power. However, the mother remembered how to manually engage the safety lock on the car, enabling them to exit the vehicle without further delay.

The Growing Concern

Tesla, synonymous with innovation, has undeniably transformed the automotive landscape. Nevertheless, even within such an impressive brand, unexpected challenges can surface. Tesla owners and prospective buyers share a growing apprehension regarding the reliability of its electrical reserves and the possibility of being stranded.

Tesla proudly emphasizes the safety of its vehicles, boasting coveted 5-star safety certifications. Tesla cars are also equipped with multiple security features to deter car theft and aid in locating stolen vehicles. However, concerns have arisen regarding electric disruptions that result in unresponsiveness, as many owners have reported sudden power failures while driving or in various settings, often without apparent reasons.

What compounds these concerns is the escalating frequency of such incidents, as evidenced by the mounting complaints received by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) from Tesla owners. Among the issues at hand is the difficulty locating the manual door release, which is often poorly labeled and frequently overlooked by Tesla owners who may need to consult or read the owner’s manual.

What Does This Mean for Tesla

Lockout incidents are not limited to Tesla vehicles. There have been considerably more reports of comparable or worse incidents with different Electric Vehicle (EV) brands, most of which differ. Tesla will likely face the most criticism because people have high expectations of the highly-rated brand. This does not absolve the corporation of responsibility. Millions of cars that were sold in the US have already been recalled by the manufacturer because of an autopilot issue

According to a recent poll, many Tesla owners file complaints with the federal vehicle safety inspectors; nonetheless, the agency advises owners of electric vehicles to become familiar with manual safeguards in case of emergency. EV comes with a detailed manual that explains maintenance practices and how to navigate from the car in such instances.

Tesla vehicles have a guidebook explaining how and when to replace the 12v battery and how to use the safety latch. Every Tesla owner should study the instructions thoroughly before driving it for the first time. Tesla and other automotive firms should take the initiative to promote the importance of doing so.

Final Thoughts

The multiple reports of people becoming stuck in Tesla vehicles are unsettling and highlight the need for precautionary measures and having the contact information of a professional auto locksmith readily accessible. Electric vehicles play a significant role in the automotive industry’s technological evolution and environmental efforts. As technology continues to advance, users need to understand the operational aspects of these vehicles, including potential malfunctions and safety measures.
