Young #Nokia Enthusiast @r_coughlan reviews the Nokia Lumia 520 #nokia #ireland

One of our fans Ronan Coughlan aged 19 is a new blogger in ireland which i helped him get started and likes all things tech and has reviewed the NOKIA LUMIA 520 he sent it in to us to have a look.

You can read the review here and tell us what you think yourself.

So about two weeks ago the Nokia Lumia 520 turned up at my doorstep for me to give my thoughts and review on this small but punchy smartphone. Earlier in the week I did a piece on the Lumia 520: Unboxed which you can find here. This is my thoughts and views on the Lumia 520 in a full review now!

Design:
A great feature on this device is the changeable back covers which are available in a range a colors including yellow, red, cyan, white and black. My device was yellow and its was very vibrant and colorful. With this added bonus you could change the back cover to suit your style, mood or day which brings great value for money and if you scratch the back of your 520 just replace it with a shiny new one and your good to go! On the device the design is nice and clean, it sports three buttons on the right side with a volume rocker, home button and a very handy dedicated camera button. The top of the phone has a headphone jack and at the bottom we see a usb port. The 5mp camera, mic and centered Nokia logo at the back that complete the Lumia’s design features on-board.

Display:
This device does indeed pack a punch with a fantastic resolution of 800 x 480 which turned a few heads when out and about with this device! With a 4 inch screen its not the biggest smartphone screen but for its value and great display its brilliant! The contrast and colour are rich and very sharp so no problems there.

Operating system:
The Lumia 520 runs Windows phone 8 software in its main form of live tiles (below). If you want something different than your friends S3 or iPhone than this is for you! Swiping to the left will bring you to all your apps, and with the colourful tiles you can chop and change, re size and minimize to suit your needs! The Windows store is still let down by big, official apps but its growing each day and hopefully will get to compete with android and iOS very soon but its very nice colourful and customizable!

The Lumia 520 running Windows phone 8 software (above)

Processor:
The Lumia’s powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM. That’s the same processor you’ll find inside the Lumia 720 so, as with the screen resolution, you’re getting much better value for money at the lower end of the range than at the top. It’s a much lesser engine than the quad-core superphones of today but it being Windows Phone the processor is well able to handle and does not need such big power. With so many other budget phones they can lag through gameplay but the 520 betters all of them with flaw free gameplay with such games as Temple Run and Pac-Man which I played both an perfectly.

Camera:
The 520 packs a 5mp camera with no flash and no Carl Zeiss features we would see on the 820 or 920 but still it takes basic shots very well. Nokia chucks in a bunch of camera software too, all of which you’ll find on the 520. There’s a panorama function, built-in editing tools, a Cinemagraph app and a best-shot tool that combines multiple shots of people into one, letting you pick the best faces from each image. Overall for the price I an content with the camera functions for this budget device. (see camera test below).

In both photos the colours are captured well but you don’t get the sharpness of a high end cameraphone, but its still looks alright..

Conclusion;
The 520 packs many of the same specs as the Lumia 720/820 etc, making it excellent value and a fantastic smart phone to consider on a budget. Its bold display is one of the best I’ve seen in the low-end market and Nokia’s software additions of HERE Maps and the Drive app are brilliant! Unless you want a better camera this is the device for you! You can buy one from O2 Ireland for a bargain price of 109 euros here

Pros:

  • Affordable price
  • Excellent display
  • Decent bundled apps, especially sat-nav
  • Colourful changeable covers
  • Expandable storage and swappable battery

Cons:

    • Laclustire camera function
    • Poor front facing camera
    • Windows app store still trial a bit behind IOS and Android app stores as of now

So that’s my review of the Lumia 520! I hope you like it! I’d like to thank Nokia Connects and especially Laura from the team for giving me the opportunity to trial this device for two weeks. It was brilliant! Remember you can now follow the blog on twitter here @TechInfoIRL and get tweeting! : v)

The Nokia Lumia 520 has 35.2% share in the Windows Phone market in ireland

In a report from adDuplex they say that the nokia lumia 520 has a staggering 35.2% market share of the windows phone market in ireland which again proves that lumia is selling and gaining traction in the market share.

The chart above shows us the statistics so here are the rest of the nokia results.

The 520-35.2%

The 800- 23.6%

The 820- 12.2%

The 610- 6.2%

The 620- 3.3%

The 920-3.0%

The 925- 2.4%

The 900- 1.3 %

Nothing yet for the 1020 as its only released.

Pretty good figures.now all we need is the adoption of windows phone apps at home and the rising figures will continue.

Nokia owns 90% of the Windows Phone market #nokia #lumia #windowsphone #WP8

Data source

This report is based on data collected from 1,411 Windows Phone apps running AdDuplex SDK v.2. The raw data analyzed was collected over the day of October 11th, 2013 (UTC time) unless otherwise stated. We have made every attempt to consolidate different reported phone model names under their canonical retail model names, but it is possible that some of the rare model name variations were not accounted for.

Worldwide stats

It’s no surprise that Lumia 520 is continuing its rise as the top Windows Phone device out there (+1.9%). The newer flagships are still nowhere to be seen in the top 10 though. Only if we exclude the WP7 models we see the Lumia 925 at no.10.

Lumia 1020 is number 21 overall and 14th for WP8 – some growth from the last month, but definitely not taking the charts by storm. Now that it is reasonably widely available it will be interesting to check back on the progress next month.

Nokia is now 0.8% shy of claiming the mind blowing 90% share of the Windows Phone 8 device scene.

And Windows Phone 8 has finally crossed the 70% mark globally.

few months ago we have covered an interesting metric of daily average active users per app. Here’s an update for that chart.

The average app (calculated by discarding the top 5 apps and apps with 2 or fewer users) now gets 2x more users than a year ago. A solid growth delivered by the platform to the developers.

United States

US now has a new leader and if you combine it with its 520 sibling you can see that almost quarter of the Windows Phones in US is now represented by the lower end 52x line. There’s also a new leading operator for Windows Phone 8.

AT&T has reclaimed the crown from Verizon, and MetroPCS and T-Mobile continue to steal the market share from the 2 leaders.

Windows Phone 8 is now on almost 83% of devices in the US, so if you are targeting US market, I guess, you can start developing for WP8-only.

Canada

I don’t think we’ve covered Canada ever before, so it’s time to fix that. Lumia 520 and 920 almost share the top spot and it’s pretty clear that the smaller sibling will claim the crown next month. What is interesting to see is that Samsung ATIV S is at number 3 with a solid 14%. Not a picture we are used to seeing.

France

France was dominated by HTC 8S for a long time, but looking at the current numbers it’s hard o believe that this was ever a case. Lumia 520 now has an almost 3x share of the 8S.

Ireland

Another country we have never covered is Ireland and Lumia 520 reigns supreme over there. Nothing really stands out in this chart.

Turkey

There are no surprises in Turkey either. The market share is split by the Lumias in the ascending price order (with an exception of the 720).

Israel

As you read this I am most likely in Israel and therefore we cover the Israeli landscape. Again, an odd sighting of the ATIV S at number 3 with Lumia 820 and 920 commanding a whopping 65% combined.

India

Another country we made a habit of covering every month is India. It never failed to provide interesting developments. But nothing interesting has happened over there this month. Well, unless you find the fact that Lumia 625 didn’t take the market by storm interesting.

Brazil

And we are wrapping up this report with Brazil. It’s nice to see that Lumia 520 seems to be taking of there, but it still have ways to go before it passes the current leader – the venerable 710

The Nokia Lumia 625 now only €199 * On @VodafoneIreland #nokia #ireland

Vodafone are now doing a deal on the nokia lumia 625 which prices it at 199 euros, initially it was 229 euros on release a few weeks ago,so take a look at this deal and think about this bargain.

As below you will see the launch price.

If you follow the link

You will see the nothing out of the ordinary terms and conditions to get this great deal.

EXPANSYS IRELAND now selling the Nokia Lumia 1020 #nokia#ireland #NokiaLumia1020

Expansys ireland now have the 1020 up on their website at a modest 729 euros sim free plus shipping.

Sim fee suits most people that are not tied into contract plus the value of the device remains higher on resale at a later date.

Black and white version is available.

High Prices in Ireland for the Nokia Lumia 520

Nokia’s popular handset the lumia 520 has been on sale a while now and proving popular.

With the average cost on pre-pay here in ireland its normally around 109.99 euros.

Argos have released their new catalog, the autumn/winter 2013.

So naturally i checked out the prices and to see whats on offer from the retail giant.

Well to my surprise the Lumia 520 was the at a whopping 194.99 reduced from 229.99.

Both these prices are way above board even though they are sim free models.

Here is the advertisement in the catalog

No shame here stating it was 229 which you could buy the 620 for which is the next model up.

Last year the 620 in argos was a whopping 319.99 again way over the street price.

Ok so here is where i have a valid point.

Sim free = no bloatware.

Buying from a store ok your locked and have a good chance of bloatware.

Buy the phone from a network you can get it unlocked for free with credit spend or meeting your contract terms.

Most operators now have set terms for unlocking some more outrageous than others i might add.

So if you buy it for 109.99 you can get it unlock for free by meeting the terms above OR you can get it done for 25 euros in shop that provides the service, this would void warranty but nobody really takes this on board, unlocking phones here in ireland is a huge business.
