The Impact of GDPR on Data Privacy and Security in Europe

In the era of digital communication, data privacy and security have become paramount. Europe, in its pursuit of stronger privacy rights, introduced the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018. This groundbreaking law has reshaped the landscape of data privacy, not only in Europe but across the globe. This article will explore the impact of GDPR on data privacy and security in Europe.

A Brief Overview of GDPR

The GDPR is a regulatory framework that provides EU citizens with more control over their personal data. It obligates businesses to protect the personal data and privacy of EU citizens for transactions occurring within EU member states. The regulation also applies to non-EU businesses that offer goods or services to EU citizens.

Enhancing Data Privacy

The GDPR has significantly enhanced data privacy in Europe. It has done so by setting strict rules on data collection, storage, and usage. Under GDPR, organizations can no longer collect personal data without explicit consent, and even then, only the minimum necessary data may be collected.

Furthermore, individuals have the right to know what data is being collected about them, why it’s being collected, and how it’s being used. They also have the ‘right to be forgotten,’ which means they can request that an organization delete all of their personal data.

Improving Data Security

In addition to enhancing data privacy, the GDPR has also led to improvements in data security. The regulation mandates that organizations implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect personal data. This includes measures to prevent data breaches, such as encryption, pseudonymization, and the ability to ensure the ongoing confidentiality, integrity, and resilience of processing systems.

Moreover, in the event of a data breach, organizations are required to notify the relevant supervisory authority within 72 hours. This has led to greater transparency and has helped mitigate the impact of data breaches on individuals.

The Role of Online Security Tools

While the GDPR has undeniably enhanced data privacy and security across Europe, it’s crucial to recognize that individuals themselves also bear responsibility for safeguarding their own data. Here is where the value of online security tools becomes evident.
One of these valuable resources is the WebParanoid browser extension. Although this extension doesn’t interact with GDPR directly, it serves as an invaluable aid for individuals looking to protect their personal data by impeding access to harmful sites and identifying potential phishing attempts. Tools like these can supplement security measures, assisting individuals in further fortifying their data protection efforts.

Summary

The GDPR has had a profound impact on data privacy and security in Europe. It has given individuals more control over their personal data, imposed stricter rules on data collection and usage, and improved data security measures. Online security tools like WebParanoid further enhance these protections, helping individuals safeguard their personal data. While the GDPR has set a high standard for data protection, it’s a shared responsibility between individuals, organizations, and the tools they use to ensure the privacy and security of personal data.

Tech Review – Switchbot indoor home security system

Home security is a must have be it indoor or outdoors and yet I hear today so called security experts stating there is no need at all for indoor security cameras. That is a topic at hand for another day should any security expert want to challenge me on that you can certainly fire away but I feel I will be left waiting the same way I was left reeling hering such on our airwaves more than once and is simply a pathetic comment to make.

The Switchbot indoor setup comes in several packages tailored for your needs or you can customise your own they have several bundles on offer or you can make it your own which is cool but do check out the bundles they have and not only that they are amongst the cheapest out there today and while I say cheap I have tried and tested these and avoid the cheap offerings you tend to see on Facebook that will rope you into subscription plans and below par cameras.

In our setup we have a motion sensor and window sensor on the camera side we have a 1080p pan and tilt a 2K pan and tilt and an indoor camera so i strategically place these around the home and at any entry points I seen where the could be a breach so to speak given I do have an external set up around the perimeter of my house

There is an app for these and no hub required unlike the old days when you did need a hub but you can use one if you like as they have hubs available but the less things plugged in the better these days and we just went on without one and all worked well.. Check out the app below but we have a good detailed video review below to check out what you can do in the app and the features included which is plenty I might add.

With the cameras you are in control and full control it is best to get an SD card to store locally on the device which you can then see on your smartphone or tablet these also work with Google and Alexa for those interested and can be put onto you home hubs if you wish. in the app you have so many settings to pick from which we go into detail with in the video review below but in short this setup is excellent and simple to use an navigate even for a novice there is many parameters you can pick from or customise in the app and overall for me as a whole the system is well thought out and you can get going in literally minutes.

Let’s look at the products we have tried out which give real time notifications but it must be noted you need good WiFi and lag latency can be an issue with any home security package similar and is an issue for me despite having a good plan and speed regardless what my network tells me and handing over my actual speeds and we all know how it works there and on how many other devices are connected to your hub.

With all cameras there is two way audio screen shot/photo capture, pinch to zoom, quality of image and video options, zone detection, recording on the spot and much more..

SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam 2K

SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam 2K features a high-resolution lens module, with an f2.0 aperture lens and now offers approximately 50% more pixels when videoing. This means picture quality is now clearer and colors are more transparent and natural.Upgraded auto-tracking supports horizontal and vertical movement. Compared to the previous generation, the tracking range is expanded by nearly 77%. It automatically tracks and records video whenever someone enters a home as you will see in the video. You can choose to have Pan/Tilt Cam 2K patrol specific areas at certain times of the day to allow you to focus more on the places that matter to you most.

SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam 1080p

When using the Pan and Tilt feature our camera can swivel from left to right and is able to tilt up and down enabling you to be able to view your entire room. You can also set 6 favorite key focal points and then simply select one to automatically pan over to the position you have set making it even easier to check specific areas on the fly. Equipped with a 1080p 2-megapixel f2.0 aperture camera, SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam is able to let more light in. Making images more detailed, and ensuring better results in any lighting conditions. When SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam detects movement, you’ll be able to automatically start tracking and recording whatever is in its sight, making sure you never miss a thing. And you’ll be able to view everything using our app via your smartphone for even more convenience.

SwitchBot Sensor Combo

Contact sensor with a detection range of up to 16.4 ft (5m), 90° horizontally, and 55° vertically

Get notifications around the clock

Sensor can detect body movement across a wider area range of up to 30 ft, at an angle of up to 110° horizontally, and 55° vertically A light sensor inside that can be used to detect what kind of light environment your surroundings are in.

SwitchBot Indoor Cam 1080p
SwitchBot Indoor Camera can help monitor your home 24 hours a day and can alert you when something unexpected happens. You can also live stream to your camera anytime, anywhere (supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks only). And with night vision, 1080p HD resolution, and 130º Wide angle lens you’ll be able to see everything in front of you clearer than ever before. You can customize your own detection zones to set just exactly where SwitchBot Indoor Cam should be watching when sending alerts, making it easier to focus more on the areas at home that matter most.
Important note
SwitchBot Indoor Cam uses high-level encryption technology to ensure your data is protected with the highest security so that no one else can access it. Your recorded data is stored in the cloud even if your device is offline (via a monthly cloud service). We also use GDPR and CCPA certifications to make sure that your user data is better protected.
Check out the video for more below and for me this is easy to recommend and would even consider changing my entire setup to this. So all we need now from them is a video doorbell. One thing I would like to see going forward is not having plugs for all the cameras and go wireless but other than that you should look into their stuff as it is good value and works well.

Tech Review – iStorage Diskashur M2 240gb SSD. #Tech #GDPR

Storing information a key factor in todays world but having the right tools for the job is more important and with GDPR compliance now a key factor in holding data iStorage is one company to look at here with their product range and we have been long time users of their products and they get our stamp of approval.

Recently we checked out their flash drive which is a nifty tool to have at your disposal and portable and their latest offering the M2 which is also portable and much smaller than their older offerings such as the DT2 however still a great piece of kit.

Their is alot of technical jargon and so many features when it comes to talking about these products but in short they are the tools you need to keep your data safe and not get fined for data breaches. We go through the set up process below and show you how it works in the video below. The unit has a keypad up front where you set up your own password and the keys are wearproof. You get the cables required and have a choice of USB-C and A you might would need an adapter if you have no USB-C on your PC but fear not these adapters work regardless and does not lock you out as I have had to with some drives I have as my laptop has no USB-C port.

You have also got LED status lights up top and these indicate the lock status etc and good to have. You also get a cover on the unit to protect you from harm and accidental keypresses one would assume but either way you will have a tough password to crack in the first place. When it comes to data transfer it is quick and easy and no issues seen and the same bringing it back so overall a simple to use product to give you the optimum experince with you data held in safe hands and saving you hassle in the long run.

So who is this for? Well anyone really especially those on the move with office and home work or moving between locations and for anyone else being honest as I would like to have my data secured and not seen by anyone else…

iStorage sent us this press sample and they are seeing this review the same time as you

Tech Review – SecureDrive BT HDD External Portable Drive with Phone Authentication. #Tech #SecureDrive #GDPR

Having reviewed several of these in the past we have now the Secure Drive BT  HDD option in for review and as expected the technology here keeps getting better all the time and the size keeps getting smaller too which is more beneficial to the user for carrying around data and keeping it safe or for the likes of me I keep in my pocket or one of my tech bags in a secure pocket. Also storage options are much wider than before giving someone choice rather than some expensive standard offers you might see.

The Secure Drive HDD is one of multiple offerings the company has and they have a nice product line up to suit everyone and their job is to keep your data safe and we do not need reminding of what can happen now when something goes wrong if you make a data breach and those words GDPR are mentioned. Given I find out data regulator more talk than action from what has been seen so far it is an integral part of any business to keep information safe and this company offers this in several ways and you should check them out. As for this review we are looking at the apps the company has on both Android and iOS which works with this device in particular they also have a keypad version too but this one is more high tech with face unlock built in via your smartphone which I find really futuristic and similar to the SSD option we reviewed before.. HDDs are now more efficient and generally cheaper.. We check out this and how it works below in the video on both Android and iOS apps and go through the process.

In short I have been using the Secure Drive Products for some years now and can easily recommend these for ease of use and knowing that my data or anyone else’s I might have is safe and will remain that way no matter which product I use from their portfolio.

On the 3rd Anniversary of GDPR: 46% of businesses admit they still struggle with GDPR regulation #GDPR #ACOI

More than 4 in every 10 Irish businesses are still struggling with elements of GDPR in their day-to-day operations three years after its introduction.  This is one of the primary findings of the latest nationwide survey from the Association of Compliance Officers in Ireland (ACOI). The survey of over 300 organisations, answered by ACOI members with responsibility for compliance in financial organisations throughout the country, was released in tandem with the third anniversary of the introduction of the EU wide regulatory system for data control and privacy. The survey found that while two thirds of organisations are fully or almost fully compliant, another third of firms have yet to reach that level.

Speaking of the findings, Michael Kavanagh, CEO of ACOI, commented,

“It’s encouraging to find that everything is ‘running smoothly’ for 54% of businesses in their GDPR operations and control. This is certainly something to be lauded, as implementing the code has proved a complex and often time-consuming task for many. Which is why it’s concerning, but perhaps unsurprising, to find the remaining organisations that participated in our survey (46%) are still struggling, despite being three years into the regulations. This raises questions around whether or not businesses feel they have enough support in this area? And more importantly, is there more that can be done to help companies struggling in this regard?”

GDPR regulation requires businesses to protect the personal data and privacy of EU citizens for transactions occurring within EU member states.

Mr. Kavanagh commented,

The survey reveals that a quarter of businesses are “fully compliant” with the regulations. This means they have successfully implemented all the measures required and that they have limited their exposure to regulatory penalties. A further 42%, the majority of respondents, were “almost fully compliant”, meaning they still have elements to work on in terms of their exposure to penalty. This could be in an area of accountability and governance they have overlooked, or it could be to do with privacy rights, or data security.  31% agreed that they were “somewhat compliant”, but that gaps remained.

To any companies that may overlook their compliance in this critical area of business, or indeed who may have let their systems lapse owing to pressures in other areas of operations, we would advise them to rectify the issues as soon as possible, because EU regulatory bodies have, and will inflict heavy penalties on companies that do not adhere to  the required GPDR standards.”

COVID & GDPR

The ACOI survey also found that almost 4 in 10 businesses believe GPDR would make it very difficult for businesses to collect and collate employee health and vaccination data.

Mr. Kavanagh went on to say,

Like most things, COVID will have implications for GPDR and vice versa in terms of collection of employee health and vaccination data. It is  evident from our survey that if employers were to gather this data, many employers feel that GDPR could hamper their efforts – so consideration would have to be given to this area”.

Mr. Kavanagh concluded,

We would encourage business owners to make full use of the various supports and resources available to businesses to help them in this area, which range from online GDPR checklists to compliance professionals which can audit your GDPR compliance, improve systems, and fill in any outstanding gaps.”

8 Easy Ways To Protect Your Data Online

It’s no exaggeration to say that we live our lives online. We’ve come a long way from the early days of the Internet when we used it to research high school book reports and email. These days, you can shop for clothes, buy your groceries, become an influencer with millions of followers on social media, or watch a live event with billions around the world.

We’ve learned and grown with the Internet, but it is learning too, about us.

Every site you visit online has cookies that collect information about you. The last ten years have been filled with frightening reports of data breaches at companies we give our banking information to. We also cannot forget scandals like Cambridge Analytica, which was an eye opening demonstration of the potential for misuse of data collected about us online.

Is Big Brother a reality of modern life that we just have to accept? While you may not be able to completely eliminate all forms of data collection, there are ways you can protect yourself and limit the reach of collection tools.

1. Consider switching search engines and browsers

Google has become such an unavoidable part of our lives it’s joined the English Language as a verb, complete with a dictionary definition. You can now be “googled” or searched. As much as we like the search engine and browser, the fact is Google is one of the biggest collectors of data online. Google records every single search item and site you visit. Moreover, information about your online activity is surprisingly detailed and stretches back over several years.

You can have this information deleted. You can also prevent it from being collected in the first place. Use alternative search engines that do not keep records. DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Qwant are privacy first search engines that offer varying degrees of freedom from tracking and collection. For alternative browsing, try Microsoft Edge or Safari.

2. Get an ad blocker

Most people see online ads as a necessary, if annoying, tradeoff we engage in for the content we love on the Internet. They can also be quite harmful. What most of us don’t know is that these ads are connected by a vast web of servers that allow you to be tracked once you click on them.

This is one way information is “stolen” from you through ads, as a profile of your interests, age, location among other things is built based on the ads you view.

The other is through the inclusion of malware and spyware on ad links. You can click on an ad and find yourself directed to a seemingly legitimate product website that prompts you to enter your financial information, only to have the data stolen and used by hackers.

An ad blocker will significantly limit the number of these “ads” you’ll be exposed to.

3. Install anti virus

To use your personal computer on the Internet without having anti-virus software installed on it is asking for trouble.

Viruses being released today are capable of causing far more damage to your machine and irrecoverable loss than any other time in the Internet’s history. Beyond that, the average user is dealing with sophisticated spyware and malware, software designed to spy and track on the user or cause the computer to behave in ways that are detrimental to it and the user.

Ransomware crimes have also become a significant problem. This is where the data on your device is encrypted and is not released back to you until the money is paid to the attacker. Having a backup of your data would help if this happens to you.

Backing up your data to the cloud is one method available to you. Therefore, it’s highly important to learn what is cloud security to find out how you can add an extra layer of security when you go online. You can never be too prepared or too protected online these days.

4. Take precautions when using public Wi-Fi

This one is for users of public wifi networks. In these quarantine times, it is especially good to get out and into the open, so you might take your laptop down to the local coffee shop. What you may not know is that your data can be stolen over these public networks. To stop this, you can install a VPN or Virtual Private Network.

This allows you to hide your IP address and block ads, which reduces the number of ways you can be tracked.

5. Use unique passwords for every online account

Having the same password for your online accounts may be convenient and easy to remember but it’s also dangerous. If hackers gain access to one of your accounts and try your password at the others, there are likely to be other security breaches. Consider getting a password manager, which will store all of your passwords.

6. Use two-factor authentication

This is another security measure that can add an extra layer of protection when you are online. Typically, two-factor authentication asks for a code, sent to a device only you have access to, along with a password. This way, even if someone steals your password, they can’t get into your accounts, as they don’t possess the code.

7. Password protect your phone

We tend to forget to password protect our phone, even though we are on it more often than our laptop or desktop throughout the day. This is like leaving your wallet on a public bus filled with cash. Think of someone having access to all of your contacts, your photos, your DMs, your social media accounts, all with the swipe of a finger.

Use the option to set up a password that comes with your phone, or take advantage of several security apps that do this as well.

8. Clear cache

Your browser knows you much better than you would like to think. Unfortunately, it can also help people looking to steal information about your buying habits or financial details because it stores so much information about what you do online. Clear your browser’s cache regularly to prevent this.

You won’t be able to completely eliminate online data threats, but you can significantly reduce them by taking these steps.
