AI is making cybercrime faster, not smarter. Irish organisations should tighten access and oversight.

ESET Ireland has warned that the growing use of AI coding assistants by criminals is changing the pace of cyberattacks, making it easier to automate work that previously required more time, skills and manpower.
The warning follows public reporting this week describing a case in which an attacker used an AI chatbot to support cyberattacks on government systems, including identifying weaknesses and speeding up scripting and automation.
George Foley, spokesperson for ESET Ireland, said the headline detail is not the country involved, but the method.
“This is what’s changing. The grunt work is getting easier to industrialise. If a criminal can use an AI tool to move faster, iterate faster and automate more, the gap between ‘trying it’ and ‘doing damage’ gets smaller,” he said.
Foley said organisations should not treat this as an “AI panic” story.
“AI doesn’t magically break into networks. The usual doors still matter, weak passwords, excessive access, unpatched systems, people clicking what they shouldn’t. AI just helps attackers work through those opportunities at speed.”
ESET Research has previously reported on PromptLock, a ransomware variant that uses generative AI as part of its execution flow, as an example of how the misuse of AI is already moving from theory into practice.
Foley said the shift lands at a time when more Irish organisations are being pushed towards board-level accountability for cybersecurity under the EU’s NIS2 direction of travel, regardless of sector.
“The organisations that will cope best are the ones that have basics nailed down and ownership nailed down. Who can access what. Who approves changes. Who gets alerted when data starts moving in ways it shouldn’t. And who runs the response when something goes wrong.”
He said the priorities for most organisations are straightforward: tighten identity and access; reduce admin privileges; patch known weaknesses quickly; monitor for unusual data movement; and make sure staff know what modern phishing and social engineering looks like in 2026.

ESET Updates Its Home Security Portfolio for Advanced Ransomware and Scams

ESET, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, today announces its upgraded consumer offering, ESET HOME Security and its Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) offering, ESET Small Business Security. Launched earlier in 2025 for businesses and enterprises, today’s release makes ESET’s award-winning Ransomware Remediation feature available to consumers and SOHOs. ESET Ransomware Remediation seamlessly creates encrypted backups – enabling users to detect, block, and recover from ransomware attacks with minimal disruption.

Recognizing scams as a global threat that can harm virtually anyone, anywhere, at any time, ESET now delivers enhanced scam protection, addressing attacks vectoring from all types of sources, including SMS, email, phone calls, URLs, QR codes, malicious files, and more. ESET also launched advanced functionalities within existing features, including Microphone Monitor and Website Security Inspector.

“As a progressive digital life protection vendor, ESET carefully monitors the current threat landscape and develops its protection solutions accordingly,” said Viktória Ivanová, Vice President of Consumer and IoT Segment at ESET. “Heightened scam protection, added Ransomware Remediation, and multiple privacy protection improvements make both ESET consumer and SOHO offerings robust, all-in-one solutions for households and Small Office/Home Offices seeking reliable security that has low impact on performance and is easy to use.”

This launch expands the availability of ESET VPN to ESET HOME Security Premium users. The updated ESET HOME security management platform simplifies security management, making it easier for home admins to protect their families, and SOHO owners to observe exactly who and what are protected, and to distribute security apps with a consistent, simplified experience.

Key ESET HOME Security/ ESET Small Business Security (for Windows) improvements include:

Ransomware Remediation — Originally developed for large businesses, Ransomware Remediation minimizes the impact of ransomware attacks. Once a potential ransomware threat is identified by ESET Ransomware Shield, ESET Ransomware Remediation immediately creates backups of affected files, and after the threat is mitigated, it restores the files, effectively reverting the system to its previous state.

Enhanced privacy protection — New Microphone Monitor detects and alerts users to any unauthorized attempts to access the microphone hardware on Windows devices.

Enhanced browser security  New Website Security Inspector adds an extra layer of protection against phishing, scams, and malicious websites. This feature scans the rendered HTML in the browser to detect malicious content that can’t be detected on the network level and by URLs blacklist.

New ESET Cyber Security/ ESET Small Business Security (for macOS) features and updates:

macOS 26 Tahoe support — User can enjoy ESET Cyber Security on the latest version of macOS.

HTTPS & HTTP/3 support — Improves overall end-user protection when online.

Device Control — This feature monitors and manages external devices connected to the Mac. It helps protect against malware and unauthorized transfers of data by restricting access to specific device types or even individual devices.

ESET HOME Security and ESET Small Business Security are available across all major operating systems—Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS—and cover all typical smart home devices. On top of that, ESET Small Business Security also protects Windows servers. The updated offerings are designed to address the evolving threat landscape with special attention to prevention – ensuring a best-in-class user experience because truly effective cybersecurity should be easy to set up and administer.

More information about ESET’s consumer offering and subscription tiers can be found here. A detailed description of the SOHO offering is available here.

From Heartbreak to Bank Break Romance Fraud Tops €7m

Summer is over, routines are back, and for many, that means a return to the world of online dating. But with swipes and matches comes a growing risk: romance fraud.

Fraudsters are no longer just hiding behind stock images or stolen selfies. Increasingly, they’re using slick digital tricks from manipulated images to eerily convincing videos and even cloned voices to make themselves appear real. The aim is simple: build trust, exploit emotions, and walk away with hard-earned money.

According to Garda figures, 245 people have reported romance fraud since 2020, with average losses of approximately €28,500, adding up to well over €7 million stolen in total. In some of the most extreme cases, a woman lost over €450,000 across 18 separate transactions, while a man was defrauded of more than €380,000.

“Romance scams are different from other types of fraud because they’re built on emotional manipulation,” says George Foley of ESET Ireland. “People don’t just lose money; they lose trust, dignity, and often confidence in their relationships. The technology criminals are now using makes these scams even harder to spot, which is why awareness is vital.”

He explains that many victims only realise what has happened when it is far too late, because the scams are designed to feel real and to build trust over time. With more people expected to turn back to dating apps this autumn, he warns that the risk is only going to grow.

ESET Ireland Warns of First AI-Powered Ransomware Threat

Cybersecurity company ESET has uncovered the world’s first known case of artificial intelligence-powered ransomware, marking what experts describe as a new era in cybercrime.

The malware, dubbed PromptLock, utilises AI to adapt and disguise itself, making it more difficult to detect and defend against. ESET Ireland has warned that Irish businesses and public bodies must take this as a serious wake-up call, given the country’s record as a target for major cyberattacks.

George Foley of ESET Ireland commented, “AI has now joined the cybercriminal’s toolkit. Ireland cannot afford to be complacent; we’ve seen the impact ransomware can have on health services and businesses. This development makes attacks faster, smarter, and more damaging.”

Ransomware attacks are estimated to have cost Irish businesses tens of millions of euros in recent years, with the 2021 HSE attack still fresh in public memory. ESET is urging organisations to strengthen defences, train staff, and maintain offline backups as core protections.

ESET bulks up its ESET HOME consumer protections against identity theft, ransomware, phishing, and more

Last October, cybersecurity company ESET  announced some updates to ESET HOME Security  and I was wondering if you’d like to take a look at the latest version of ESET’s consumer offering to do a new review which covers the new features?

To rceap, ESET HOME Security is an all-in-one security management platform, available across all major operating systems and covering all typical smart home devices.  To complement the long list of existing layers of protection, including Antivirus & Antispyware, Firewall, Ransomware Shield, Anti-Phishing, Safe Banking, Safe Browsing, Password Manager, VPN and anti-theft, to name just a few, new features and upgrades have been added including:

  • New Dark Web Monitoring — ESET Identity Protection scours websites on the dark web, black market chat rooms, blogs, and other data sources to detect the illegal trading and selling of users’ personal information. ESET technology sends prompt alerts so users can take immediate action.
  • New ESET Folder Guard — This technology helps protect Windows users’ valuable data from malicious apps and threats, such as ransomware, worms, and wipers. Users can create a list of protected folders — files in these folders can’t be modified or deleted by untrusted applications.
  • New Multithread Scanning — Improves scanning performance for multi-core processor devices using Windows by distributing scanning requests among available CPU cores. There can be as many scanning threads as the machine has processor cores.
  • New Link Scanner — This feature improves  ESET Mobile Security Anti-Phishing that, in general, blocks potential phishing attacks coming from websites or domains listed in the ESET malware database. The Link Scanner is an additional layer of protection for Android smartphone users that allows ESET Mobile Security to check every link a user tries to open, not only those coming from supported websites and social network apps.
  • Improved Gamer Mode — This feature is for users who demand uninterrupted usage of their software without pop-up windows and want to minimize CPU usage. The improved version allows users to create a list of apps automatically starting gamer mode. For cautious players, there is also a new option to display interactive alerts while gamer mode is running.
  • Improved Password Manager — ESET Password Manager now includes an option to remotely log out of Password Manager when it is logged in on other devices. Users can check their password against the password breach list and view a security report that informs users if they use any weak or duplicate passwords for their stored accounts. Password Manager has an integrated option to use third-party programs as an optional two-factor authentication (2FA).
  • Improved Cyber Security for Mac users — ESET HOME Security tiers for Mac users now have a new unified Firewall with both basic and advanced setup options in the main Graphical User Interface (GUI). This means the solution is tailored to the needs of users from basic to more advanced, without unnecessary settings.

These enhancements correspond to the increasing number of advanced, automated, and AI driven threats targeting individuals and address growing concerns about data privacy, ransomware attacks, phishing, and scams. ESET offers three subscription tiers to ESET Home Security, more information on what’s included can be found here.

New research highlights crucial cybersecurity gaps in education sector

New research highlights the need for ongoing concern for the UK education sector’s cybersecurity posture in the light of a growing threat landscape. ESET ‘s findings reveal that nearly three-quarters (73%) of institutions surveyed have experienced at least one cyber-attack or breach in the past five years, with a fifth reporting three or more incidents. This aligns with government data from 2024, which found that 77% of education organisations had experienced a breach or attack in the previous year – far higher than the 50% of UK businesses overall that had been targeted.
Despite being a key target for cyber threats, one-third of education institutions surveyed still lack fundamental protections, such as antivirus software (33%) and strong password policies (35%2). Additionally, the majority (79%) have not adopted advanced measures like managed detection and response.
Another key but often overlooked safeguard is cyber insurance, which, according to government data, under half of primary schools (44%) and even fewer secondary schools (36%) report having in place. In fact, the ESET findings reveal that 7% of institutions operate without an annual cybersecurity budget at all.
This cybersecurity shortfall not only jeopardises organisational data but puts sensitive student information at risk. As cybercriminals increasingly target educational institutions, students’ personal and academic data remain highly vulnerable to theft or misuse. Compounding the issue, one in five (21%) education organisations surveyed admit they feel unprepared / not confident to tackle the rising tide of AI-driven cyber threats.
When asked about the main reasons why they wouldn’t take out a cyber insurance policy, many stated that they prefer to prioritise the budgets they have for cybersecurity measures (37%). Others cited concerns about payout reliability (33%) and complex or unclear policy terms (32%). Meanwhile, 28% believe cyber insurance is too expensive, while 18% revealed they simply don’t understand its value.
Top threats persist
These revelations all come at a time when education organisations continue to battle familiar foes, with data breaches (61%), malware (55%) and phishing (43%) topping their list of concerns. While three-quarters (76%) of education organisations surveyed believe their staff have excellent or good knowledge and awareness of cyber security best practices and online safety, over  half still plan to prioritise increasing staff awareness and training and expanding their cyber security tools or software over the next 12 months (55% and 51% respectively).
The case for managed support
Over three-quarters (77%) believe their institutions would benefit from enhanced cyber security measures with managed support from an external, specialist cyber security provider. However, nearly half (47%) of education organisations surveyed said they would need evidence of a cyber-attack’s potential detrimental and financial impact on their institution to help convince their finance department to approve a larger cybersecurity budget.
Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, commented: “Education organisations are sitting on a ticking time bomb. While it’s clear that the sector recognises the critical importance of cybersecurity, there is a huge disconnect between budget allocation, lack of insurance and its misconceptions, and inadequate measures, which is leaving institutions highly vulnerable. A comprehensive strategy that includes both cutting-edge security tools, like managed detection and response, and appropriate insurance coverage, is essential to protect against potentially devastating financial and operational impacts.
“These findings underscore the urgent need for education organisations to adopt a more robust and integrated approach to cybersecurity. Institutions can better safeguard their operations, staff and students, by increasing investment, educating stakeholders, implementing advanced solutions, enhancing training, and collaborating with specialised providers.”

ESET bulks up its ESET HOME consumer protections against identity theft, ransomware, phishing, and more

ESET, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, has announced the launch of its upgraded consumer offering ESET HOME Security, introducing new features such as ESET Folder Guard and Multithread Scanning, together with an overall improvement of its capabilities. Identity Protection featuring Dark Web Monitoring is now globally available.

These enhancements to ESET HOME Security, as an all-in-one solution for consumers, correspond to the increasing number of advanced, automated, and AI-driven threats targeting individuals and address growing concerns about data privacy, ransomware attacks, phishing, and scams.

Despite being packed with the latest technology, ESET HOME Security remains easy to use thanks to ESET HOME, a comprehensive security management platform available across all major operating systems — Windows, macOS, Android, iOS — and covering all typical smart home devices. Now ESET HOME Security offers even more formidable protection for entire households.

“As a progressive digital life protection vendor, ESET is dedicated to always being one step ahead of adversaries. Our team of experts created a powerful digital life protection solution that blends more than 30 years of human expertise with artificial intelligence, multilayered security technology, and live cloud protection. Following a prevention-first approach that stops threats before they can do any harm, ESET HOME Security brings peace of mind regarding privacy and security, while staying user-friendly, powerful, light, and fast,” said Viktória Ivanová, Vice President of Consumer and IoT Segment at ESET.

To complement the long list of already existing layers of protection, including Antivirus & Antispyware, Firewall, Ransomware Shield, Anti-Phishing, Safe Banking, Safe Browsing, Password Manager, VPN, and Anti-Theft — to name just a few — new features and upgrades have been added:

New Dark Web Monitoring — ESET Identity Protection* scours websites on the dark web, black market chat rooms, blogs, and other data sources to detect the illegal trading and selling of users’ personal information. ESET technology sends prompt alerts so users can take immediate action.

New ESET Folder Guard — This technology helps protect Windows users’ valuable data from malicious apps and threats, such as ransomware, worms, and wipers (malware that can damage users’ data). Users can create a list of protected folders — files in these folders can’t be modified or deleted by untrusted applications.

New Multithread Scanning — Improves scanning performance for multi-core processor devices using Windows by distributing scanning requests among available CPU cores. There can be as many scanning threads as the machine has processor cores.

New Link Scanner — This feature improves ESET Mobile Security Anti-Phishing that, in general, blocks potential phishing attacks coming from websites or domains listed in the ESET malware database. The Link Scanner is an additional layer of protection for Android smartphone users that allows ESET Mobile Security to check every link a user tries to open, not only those coming from supported websites and social network apps. For instance, if a user receives a phishing link in a game app and opens it, the link is first redirected to the ESET Mobile Security app, where it is checked, before being redirected to the browser. If the user is using an unsupported browser, the Link Scanner will block the malicious link in this case.

Improved Gamer Mode — This feature is for users who demand uninterrupted usage of their software without pop-up windows and want to minimize CPU usage. The improved version allows users to create a list of apps automatically starting gamer mode. For cautious players, there is also a new option to display interactive alerts while gamer mode is running.

Improved Password Manager — ESET Password Manager now includes an option to remotely log out of Password Manager when it is logged in on other devices. Users can check their password against the password breach list and view a security report that informs users if they use any weak or duplicate passwords for their stored accounts. Password Manager has an integrated option to use third-party programs as an optional two-factor authentication (2FA).

Improved Cyber Security for Mac users — ESET HOME Security tiers for Mac users now have a new unified Firewall with both basic and advanced setup options in the main Graphical User Interface (GUI). This means the solution is tailored to the needs of users from basic to more advanced, without unnecessary settings.

This robust all-in-one security product is an ideal solution for all who have concerns beyond general cybersecurity, and it includes privacy protection, identity protection, performance optimization, device protection, and smart home protection. Because in a world of advanced cyberthreats, quality matters.
