New Advanced CT Scanning Service delivered by Alliance Medical at Charter Medical Private Hospital

Charter Medical Private Hospital (CMPH) Mullingar is pleased to announce on behalf of Alliance Medical the launch of its new state-of-the-art CT scanning service in partnership with Alliance Medical, one of Ireland’s leading independent diagnostic providers. The enhanced service, delivered on-site in Mullingar, will provide significantly expanded diagnostic capacity for patients across the Midlands.

The investment by Alliance Medical in the delivery of the new CT scanning service further enhances CMPH’s role as a key regional healthcare provider, supporting faster diagnosis, earlier intervention, and improved outcomes for both public and private patients.

It also serves to strengthen the long-term partnership between CMPG and Alliance Medical and is a clear demonstration of support by Alliance Medical in the development of the hospital’s infrastructure, along with the ambitious expansion plans of CMPH.

The CT service is fully operational and accepting referrals from GPs, consultants and allied health professionals. It provides access to a comprehensive suite of high‑quality imaging services. CMPH patients can now access Neuro CT, Orthopaedic & Musculoskeletal, Vascular CT,  CT Angiography; and Oncology CT.

Cardiac CT will be added shortly, strengthening CMPH’s ability to support rapid diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions.

All imaging is carried out on-site by Alliance Medical’s specialist radiography team, with reporting completed by RCSI‑accredited consultant radiologists, ensuring clinical accuracy and rapid turnaround times.

The collaboration with Alliance Medical ensures CMPH can provide a best‑in‑class diagnostic experience while maintaining seamless integration with its surgical, outpatient and public healthcare services.

Charter Medical Private Hospital is a 77‑bed acute hospital delivering a broad range of clinical, surgical and diagnostic services to patients across the Midlands. It is part of a wider healthcare network employing over 300 professionals across Dublin and Westmeath.

CMPH plays a significant role in supporting the HSE through the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) and Access to Care (ATC) programmes, delivering thousands of procedures in ENT, Ophthalmology, Urology, Dermatology, and General surgery and minor procedures

The hospital is also home to the only public Minor Injuries Unit in the Midlands, treating approximately 10,000 patients per year.

CMPH accepts a wide range of insurance providers including VHI, Laya Healthcare, Irish Life Health, Garda Medical Aid and Prison Officer Medical Aid and offers a transparent self‑pay option for patients seeking immediate access to diagnostic imaging.

Hibernia College becomes first European university to join global alliance for digital innovation in teacher education

Hibernia College, Ireland’s largest provider of teachers, today announced it has joined the Alliance for Innovation in Teacher Education, becoming the first European institution to join the international partnership. As an Alliance member, Hibernia College will equip its 2,500 student teachers with the practical technology skills required for modern classrooms. The Alliance brings together the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), as well as other leading higher education organisations with the shared goal of transforming how universities prepare educators for digitally enhanced learning environments.

Hibernia College will integrate the ISTE Standards across its Professional Master’s of Education programme and develop professional credentials that allow teacher candidates to demonstrate proficiency in the effective use of technology for learning. The College’s 600 adjunct faculty – all practising teachers – will also benefit from access to new professional development opportunities through the Alliance.

ISTE+ASCD is run by Richard Culatta, a former advisor to President Barack Obama who served as Executive Director of the Office of Educational Technology for the US Department of Education. Mr Culatta also served as the Chief Innovation Officer for his home state of Rhode Island.

ISTE merged with ASCD in 2023 to form a nonprofit that creates standards for using technology in education. ISTE+ASCD is the leading provider of teacher training and thought leadership around the use of AI in education in the United States.

Tech Industry Alliance TechFest 2025 – Tech, AI & Humanity: Shaping Our Future

Tech Industry Alliance’s flagship annual conference, TechFest 2025, brought over 400 delegates to the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on Thursday, 15 May, for a powerful day of insight, innovation, and inspiration. With the theme “Tech & Humanity – Shaping Our Future,” the event challenged attendees to re-imagine our relationship with technology—from the rise of AI to the future of work and the next frontier: space.

Hosted by Tech Industry Alliance, the conference brought together tech and business leaders, educators, startups, and policymakers from across the South West of Ireland to explore how technology is impacting every aspect of society—and how we can ensure that progress is human-centred, ethical, and inclusive.

Tech & Humanity – Shaping Our Future

The conference opened with a captivating keynote by neuroscientist and broadcaster Dr. Hannah Critchlow, who explored “Consciousness and Our Evolving Relationship with AI”. The morning continued with a powerful panel on AI and Humanity, moderated by Jonathan McCrea, that delved into the ethical, philosophical, and societal impacts of artificial intelligence.

Later in the day, Cormac O’Sullivan of MBRYONICS delivered a visionary talk on “Building the Internet in Space”, which led into a thought-provoking discussion on Space and the Future of Humanity, highlighting the South West’s growing role in space-tech innovation.

Other key sessions examined the future of tech talent, exploring the skills and strategies needed to future-proof the workforce, and featured a showcase of evolving tech companies, with early-stage startups from the region pitching their products and sharing their journeys.

Exhibition stands, networking lounges, and interactive sessions throughout the day gave attendees opportunities to connect, learn, and collaborate.

New Online Safety Monitor Provides Recommendations to make the Online World Safer for Children and Young People

The first Online Safety Monitor was launched today at an online safety conference hosted by the Children’s Rights Alliance. The conference featured addresses from Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan and David D’Arcy, Digital Services Act Officer for Ireland at the European Commission office in Dublin. At a crunch point with new regulation of online platforms, the Online Safety Monitor provides a baseline analysis of the protections in place and the areas where children in Ireland remain vulnerable online.

“If laws and regulations fail to keep pace with the digital world, it is children and young people who pay the price. Failing to have adequate protections online creates space for predators to hide,” said Noeline Blackwell, Online Safety Coordinator with the Children’s Rights Alliance.

The Online Safety Monitor marks a unique and comprehensive analysis of the current state of children’s online rights; outlining key recommendations across three thematic areas in a single document and laying the groundwork for ongoing monitoring as these rights continue to evolve.

The Online Safety Monitor calls on the Government to:

  • Establish an effective and accessible Public Individual Complaints Mechanism where complaints made by children or involving a child are given priority

 

  • Strengthen oversight of platform compliance with the Digital Services Act to ensure accountability mechanisms are effective and child-centred, and include safety-by-design, transparency, privacy and algorithms

 

  • Lead reform of EU Laws that combat the production, hosting, access and use of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and ensure these laws properly address grooming, encryption, detection and secure storage of both new and existing CSAM

 

  • Introduce targeted initiatives to raise awareness and increase understanding of online harms to children, focusing on child sexual abuse, CSAM, grooming, and sexual exploitation.

Ms. Blackwell continued:

“As we launch the Online Safety Monitor today, several platforms are under investigations in several jurisdictions because of the harms that occurred on their sites. We cannot trust platforms to decide and design their own safety rules for children. These platforms are inherently risky in their set-up, favouring profit over protection. While there have been significant strides in recent years to end this era of self-regulation, there are gaps that ultimately put children at risk.

In Ireland, there is huge public appetite for the Government to stand up to big tech and they have made a start. We have a new law, the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act, a dedicated Online Safety Commissioner and the introduction of legally binding Online Safety Codes. However, children are still being subjected to unnecessary levels of online harm.

The Online Safety Codes offer the first real chance to ensure there are significant consequences for platforms doing too little to safeguard children but in their current form, they give too much scope to platforms to determine their own safety standards. The recommender algorithms these companies designed that feed children harmful content are not included. On top of that, children and young people are still waiting for an accessible individual complaints mechanism that they can turn to when they do experience harms online. Leaving children and their families lost in a maze of complex and inconsistent reporting processes for every site they engage with.”

The Online Safety Monitor places a particular focus on the growing threat of online Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), calling for national and EU action to crackdown on the proliferation of this material.

Ms Blackwell concluded:

“The horrifying reality of an unregulated internet is children are left exposed online to the worst crimes and content you can imagine. Last year, it was estimated that over 300 million children globally were victims of online sexual exploitation. That is 10 cases every second. We have reached a grim milestone, and yet, EU regulation to address this has stalled.

Predators hide behind blind spots that current laws fail to acknowledge sufficiently, and online platforms ignore entirely, and all the while the industry profits rise. Reports of child sexual abuse material in Ireland have skyrocketed in recent years, with Hotline.ie receiving over 29,000 reports in 2023 – the highest number in its history. What should be enjoyable activities, such as chatting with friends online or playing video games, can open the door to some of the worst offences.

Online predators are skilled at identifying young internet users and are ready to exploit them, leading to children being exposed to, or in many cases, sharing their own, explicit content. Just a few minutes online at the wrong time, can have lasting impacts on children and young people beyond the screen including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and struggles with trust and self-esteem.

Despite occurring behind a screen, this is not a victimless crime, and it is not one that will disappear with a power off button. It is essential that our new Government make this an absolute priority and push for stronger EU laws and more effective ways to detect, remove, and prevent this content which has irreversible effects on countless children every minute.

There would be outrage if harms online happened offline, in our communities. Our government must step up to ensure our regulation is as robust and child-centred as possible, and that are significant penalties for platforms if they fail to comply. The online world is being shaped by digital technologies that are developing at a rapid rate. We cannot afford to wait and see what may happen if we don’t take action immediately.”

New Research Alliance Award set to drive future Irish-Welsh collaborations

Aiming to support collaborative programmes of research between Irish and Welsh universities, the Research Alliance Award was launched today by the Wales Innovation Network (WIN) and Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland.

This new initiative is designed to strengthen collaboration between institutions in Ireland and Wales, enhancing their ability to secure Horizon Europe funding. The award provides financial support to academic partners, enabling them to collaborate on innovative projects addressing global challenges and advancing scientific progress.

The programme offers grants of up to €60,000 to eligible research teams, with 50% funding provided by Research Ireland and 50% by WIN from a Welsh Government innovation grant. Joint applications must be led by researchers from both Ireland and Wales. By encouraging Wales-Ireland collaboration, the fund aims to leverage the strengths of both Irish and Welsh universities, creating a foundation for impactful research and development.

Dr Lewis Dean, head of the Wales Innovation Network, said:

“The UK’s re-association to Horizon Europe in 2024 is a great opportunity for Welsh researchers to be part of the world’s largest research collaboration programme. This joint programme between the Wales Innovation Network and Research Ireland provides support for Welsh researchers to build new ties and strengthen existing partnerships with their Irish counterparts. I am delighted WIN can facilitate this initiative to showcase the excellence of Welsh research on an international stage and build collaborations to address global challenges.”

Celine Fitzgerald, Interim CEO at Research Ireland, said:

“Ireland and Wales have a strong history of collaborating on research and innovation projects, and this has been supported through political commitment between our two governments. Today, Research Ireland has active partnerships with a range of higher education institutions including Cardiff University, Swansea University, Aberystwyth University and Bangor University. I welcome the launch of the Research Alliance Award, which will further solidify our research bonds and, in particular, strengthen our joint grant applications to Horizon Europe.”

Winners Announced for the 2024 Tech Industry Alliance Leaders Awards

The Great Southern Hotel was abuzz with excitement and celebration tonight as the winners of the prestigious 2024 Tech Industry Alliance Leaders Awards were announced. The awards recognised outstanding achievements across the tech sector in the South West of Ireland, shining a spotlight on the innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders driving growth and innovation in the region.

This year’s winners represented the leadership and dynamism of the tech community, ranging from pioneering start-ups to established enterprises. The awards ceremony brought together business leaders, policymakers, and academic luminaries to celebrate the achievements of this vibrant sector.

Winner Smart Technology Innovation Award: BioAtlantis

Coláiste Gleann Lí believe in harnessing and nurturing technology in their approach to provide students with a rounded education.

Winner – Chairperson’s Community Award: Tír na nÓg Children’s Foundation (Louise Quill)

Louise Quill began working in Tanzania in 2006. Whilst there she could see a great need for a facility that would provide a family unit for the orphaned and abandoned children of Tanzania. The Tír na nÓg Children’s Foundation was created to alleviate the suffering of Tanzanian children and to provide a home where they would be nurtured in a loving, safe environment. The aim of Tír na nÓg is to educate these children according to their abilities.

The foundation believes in developing not only schools to create the leaders of tomorrow, but also long-term sustainable projects to provide employment for local people. The foundation has been established and operated from Tralee & Tanzania. Louise who lives and teaches in Kerry divides her time between both locations, striving to provide the conditions, training and resources needed to help children grow mentally, physically and spiritually in those values that assure a fruitful and happy future. 

Winner of the Tech Scale Up Award: Green Rebel

Green Rebel is a dynamic Irish company specialising in data delivery, analytics, and consultancy to support offshore renewable energy developments. Green Rebel was founded by environmental advocate and entrepreneur, Pearse Flynn, to provide an Irish based, complete offshore survey service, support offshore wind energy projects, and help Ireland achieve its climate objectives.

Winner of the Diversity, Inclusion & Social Impact Award:  NetApp

Astellas Ireland (Kerry Plant) is a finished goods pharmaceutical facility based in Killorglin, Co. Kerry, and headquartered in Japan. The Kerry plant manufactures and packages lifesaving products for the global market including lifesaving immunosuppressants and biologic treatment for cancer patients.

Winner of the Multinational of the Year Award:  ENERCON

ENERCON is a pioneer of wind energy technology and a partner of the energy transition, that specialises in turbine and technology development, production, sales and servicing of onshore wind turbines. Winner Tech Person of the Year Award : The McCarthy Family, Fexco

The McCarthy Family have contributed significantly to the development of the South West region not only in terms of economic development, employment creation but also in leading the way as a global Technology leader in their space. Their focus on technology – enabled innovation is underpinned by their collaboration with the Science Foundation of Ireland and UCC where they aim to discover and develop the next generation of Financial Services Technology. 

Their organisation, Fexco, from its beginnings in 1981, when it was the first to get a foreign exchange license as a non-bank in Ireland, when it established itself as the Foreign Exchange Company of Ireland it has grown from strength to strength winning many prestigious awards. Tech Industry Alliance Launches Strategic Event in Partnership with AIB to Support Startups and Scale-Ups in the South West

Tech Industry Alliance Announces TechFest 2024

Tech Industry Alliance has officially launched TechFest 2024 in the AIB offices 66 South Mall Cork with AIB being one of the main event sponsors. TechFest is its annual flagship technology conference which will be held in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Little Island, Cork from 9:30am on the 14th of May 2024. This year the focus is on “Tech for Good: Driving Deep Tech, Fostering Sustainability & Building a Better Tomorrow”and to complement the main event, a  festival of supporting events will take place throughout the week of TechFest led by well known organisations and agencies throughout the South-West region. Tech Industry Alliance Announces TechFest 2023

Tech Industry Alliance has today officially launched TechFest 2023, its annual flagship technology conference which will be held in the Clayton Hotel in Cork City from 8:30am on the 25th of May 2023.  To coincide and complement the main event, a  festival of supporting events will take place throughout the week of TechFest which will be led by well known organisations and agencies throughout the South-West region. The line up of expert speakers include leading Norweigian AI Expert and Futurist Elin Hauge whose expertise in connecting the dots between business strategy and the application of AI is world-renowned. The event, MC’d by award-winning industry broadcaster Jonathan McCrea, will also feature parallel sessions focused on sustainability, digitsation, cyber, energy etc,  networking opportunities and an industry expo featuring leading companies from across Ireland.

Approx. 300 people are expected to converge on the Clayton hotel on the day to attend the event, network, connect and collaborate.
