OPPO and National Geographic bring attention to endangered species across the globe. #Oppo

Colour is deeply rooted in human experience, with nature offering a rich spectrum of hues, tones and contrast. While many have celebrated nature’s diversity for thousands of years, some of its rarest species are currently at risk of extinction.

Together with storytelling partner National Geographic, OPPO embarked on a journey to capture nature in its true full-colour beauty with the help of its latest Find X3 Pro smartphone. Working with award-winning National Geographic photographers and leveraging its billion-colour camera, OPPO aims to capture nature in its truest form, highlighting and driving awareness to endangered species as well through two campaigns – “Endangered Colour” and “Out of This World Colours”

Endangered Colour

Endangered Colour is a campaign spearheaded by OPPO in collaboration with National Geographic and the National Geographic Society. Through a series of images and short films shot by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore, all captured on OPPO Find X3 Pro, audiences can experience nature from a new perspective and discover a world full of unimaginable colour.

Each Endangered Colour episode focuses on a single colour – red, green, or blue, shedding light on nine species at risk of extinction. From the brilliant fur of the red panda to the bright blue skin of the poison dart frog, it is hard to imagine life without these spectacular colours.

Through raw and unfiltered, billion-colour footage, Endangered Colour brings the true colour and textures of nature to life with 100 percent accuracy, preserving them far into the future and raising awareness to endangered species around the world.

With the help of the Find X3 Pro, Joel Sartore chronicles biodiversity and the extinction crisis as part of a lifelong project created to document species from around the planet. As part of the Endangered Colour project, Joel captured the striking colours of endangered animals, such as the blue dart frog or the thick-billed parrot. By using the one-billion colour camera, he was able to showcase how breath-taking these hues and tones truly are, raising awareness to the dangerously fast disappearing beauty of nature.

Out of This World Colours

Further exploring the otherworldly beauty of Earth, OPPO also announced its “Out of This World Colours” campaign in partnership with National Geographic photographer Keith Ladzinski. This project aims to explore the Mojave Desert’s Mars-like landscapes, highlighting the stunning environment and bringing to life its earthy orange colours through one billion colour photography.

The campaign draws attention to nature’s unique beauty, encouraging a sense of curiosity and exploration, while driving awareness to people’s responsibility in preserving these wonders sustainably.

Taking action

Through capturing biodiversity and the extinction crisis through Photo Ark – a lifelong project created to document all captive species, helping people to connect with and care about our planet in inspiring ways, Joel Sartore invited viewers to visually consider the consequences of ignoring the beauty in nature most at risk.

OPPO supports National Geographic’s mission to protect the health of our planet.

As part of the Endangered Colour campaign, OPPO will donate USD $500,000 to National Geographic Society to help support the National Geographic Society’s wildlife conservation efforts at large including Photo Ark and the Photo Ark EDGE Fellowship.

How to reduce suffering caused by hay fever. #HayFever #Meaco

Spring has finally arrived, and for many this means the start of months of hardship as the pollen count rises. Hay fever is one of the most commonly known airborne allergies, which a range of plants can trigger, causing discomfort and asthma attacks. Chris Michael, Director of Meaco, the UK’s leading air purifier specialist, gives his advice on minimising suffering.

Understanding the symptoms and causes of hay fever is the first step to alleviating the problem. Hay fever is a common allergic reaction which occurs at particular times of the year, when the body makes antibodies in response to the pollen from grass, trees and weeds. Grass pollen is the most common allergen (May to July), but tree (February to June) and weed (June to September) pollens can also cause an allergic reaction. Symptoms of hay fever include:

  • sneezing and coughing and a runny or blocked nose
  • itchy, red or watery eyes
  • itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears
  • loss of smell
  • headaches, earaches and feeling tired
  • Asthma sufferers can be particularly adversely affected and might have a tight feeling in the chest, with a wheeze and cough

There is no cure for hay fever, which can last for weeks or months, but there are actions that can ease the symptoms.

Medication

See your doctor before the season starts, usually between the months late March through to September, the main hay fever season.  There are a variety of medication options and remedies available, the NHS online is a great place to explore.

Pollen forecasts

It’s worth making the effort to check the Met Office pollen forecast, which is available five days in advance. The site also offers in-depth pollen patterns helping you to plan for your day, week or month accordingly.

Outdoor drying

Whilst it’s tempting to make the most of warm weather, try to avoid drying clothes outdoors when the pollen count is high as the pollen in the air will no doubt stick to your clothes, and therefore will seep into your house afterwards.

Spring clean

Spring clean your house early. Dust and dust mites increase the onset of hay fever and similar allergies, so reducing and regularly removing dust all around your house in advance of the allergy season will ease the causes of allergies.

Clothes

When you come home change your clothes so that you are not wearing clothes with pollen, allowing the pollen to spread around the house.

Air purifiers

Consider investing in a HEPA based air purifier to clean the air and remove pollen. This will help breathing and aid the overall wellness of families who are spending more time indoors in close proximity to one another.  Using a HEPA air purifier in the bedroom in particular can make the difference between a good night’s sleep and a hay fever disturbed night’s lack of sleep.

There are several considerations to make before buying, to ensure the product does the job. It is very important to buy an air purifier with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter, matching the allergy to the filter, and ensuring it is the right size for a room. Meaco’s research has shown that air purifier selection often goes wrong as people buy a product that is too small for their room and cannot clean the air efficiently. The only way to reliably remove pollutants from the air is by circulating the entire volume of air in a room several times an hour, ensuring particles will enter the airflow of a filter, and the air will become cleaner. An air purifier should clean the air volume three times an hour for a mild allergy, five times an hour if you are on medication and eight times an hour if your allergy is serious.

So why should you use an air purifier with a HEPA filter? An air purifier works by removing allergens from the air. The best type of HEPA filter, a True HEPA filter, is made to strict international regulations, and traps most bacteria, pathogens, microbial spores, pollens, and some virus particles. Capturing harmful particles and circulating clean air throughout a room will help in keeping people healthy so their immune system is a tiny bit stronger to fight off any viruses.

Meaco has developed a next generation air purification range that includes the MeacoClean CA-HEPA 76×5 and MeacoClean CA-HEPA 47×5, offering bespoke multistage air purification to suit allergy and room size.

The MeacoClean CA-HEPA 76×5 is the first Meaco product to be Wi-Fi enabled, controlled via phone app. The app gives you control over keeping the air in your home clean and healthy. It can compare the level of pollen readings inside your home with external readings so you can see exactly how much healthier the air is that you’re breathing. A laser sensor reads the number of particles in the air and then shows on the display, so you can see how polluted a room is and watch the progress of the air being cleaned. All this can be done while out and about, so you can return to a home with unpolluted clean air.

The MeacoClean CA-HEPA 47×5 is a more advanced than many standard air purifiers, using True HEPA filters to remove pollen and viruses, along with activated charcoal to remove odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air. It has a PCO (Photocatalytic Oxidation) system which is the most advanced anti-bacterial/virus system to date. PCO technology speeds up the reaction time to help kill bacteria and viruses. Another advantage of the MeacoClean is that the multiple filters cover the vast majority of allergens.

The MeacoClean CA-HEPA 76×5 is suitable for rooms up to 76m³, performing five air changes per hour, and its H11 HEPA filter removes more than 95% of the damaging particles from the air. The smaller MeacoClean CA-HEPA 47X5 works in rooms sixed between 29 and 78m³.

In the era of COVID-19 the UK Health and Safety Executive recommends using mechanical air cleaning and filtration units to make workplaces as safe as possible (HSE, 2021). To support this there is an option of purchasing a H13 HEPA filter for the MeacoClean 76×5 to increase cleaning to 99.97% of particles.) H13 HEPA filters are routinely used in laboratory and operating theatres to prevent infection from airborne bacteria and viruses.

Dell Technologies encourages businesses to use the learnings of the past year to foster innovation at speed. #Dell

Reflecting on a year which has seen many businesses transition to a remote working model, Dell Technologies today outlined how organisations in Ireland can use the learnings from the past year to continue transforming at pace to ensure a digital future.

Jason Ward, Vice-President and Managing Director, Dell Technologies Ireland said: “Over the past year technology enabled organisations to transform their business models so that they can continue to operate in a virtual environment. Embracing digital transformation has ensured that 40% of Ireland’s workforce could move to working from home practically overnight while close to one million young people were able to continue learning from home.

“But after a year of living with COVID, it is essential that Irish business leaders reflect on their experiences and bring the positive learnings into future plans to inform their future growth strategy. From the shift towards ecommerce and the changing nature of work, new business opportunities have emerged. Harnessing these opportunities will require organisations to accelerate the pace both of digital and cultural transformation.

“By embracing digital and cultural transformation at speed in the coming months, we believe businesses will be able to innovative at speed. That’s why today having reflected on the year just gone we’ve outlined some of the most important lessons from the pandemic. In taking these learnings into account, business leaders can ensure that advancements made last year through necessity can be built upon to foster a technology-enabled recovery in the future.”

Jason Ward, Vice-President and Managing Director, Dell Technologies Ireland

1. The stay-at-home economy is here to stay

Businesses of all sizes have embraced the flexibility to work and operate from anywhere. SMEs, in particular, have leveraged Cloud technology to develop their online presence with ecommerce sales growing by over 24% in 2020 (CSO, 2020). With consumers increasingly moving online, Irish firms will need to develop intelligent software to personalise and fully-optimise the customer experience and modernise their IT infrastructure to support the growing demand for transactions and buying goods online.

2. The future of work is flexible, but it must be secure

Over recent months, it has become clear that the future of work is flexible. Employees have come to value the flexibility provided by remote working as they use technology to balance work and home commitments. This has been recognised by Government through the National Remote Work Strategy. With 94% of employees seeking to work remotely some or all of the time post-crisis, businesses will need to ensure they have secure devices and networks to maintain a hybrid workforce. Cybersecurity must be embedded at the heart of an organisation and a constant priority of its people.

3.Culture is key to building a productive hybrid workforce

The remote working experiment of the past year has changed the concept of work forever – it is what you do and not a place you go. Now organisations are faced with the challenge of enhancing productivity amongst a workforce located both in the office and at home. To ensure a hybrid workforce thrives into the future, leaders will need to accompany digital transformation with cultural transformation. Built on trust, clear communication and company values, culture will prove key to building collaboration within the team.

4. A new era of always-on connectivity has emerged

Businesses and remote workers have relied on broadband and 4G technology to stay connected in the past year. The coming 12 months will see 5G technology unlock a new era of always-on connectivity. With 175 zettabytes of data to be created worldwide by 2025, 5G will enable businesses to gain real time insights from data wherever it resides – in the data centre, in the cloud or at the edge – and digitise their operations at a speed not seen before.

5. Technology will be consumed as-a-Service

As digital transformation accelerated at pace in 2020, and IT strategies become more complicated, businesses sought to make technology easier to deploy, consume and manage. Increasingly, they began to consume technology as-a-Service with the move to the Cloud enabled through this approach. In the coming year, organisations will move to everything as-a-Service which will help free up IT budget to invest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities that will transform the customer experience and to harness the power of data at the edge of a network – not just data in a cloud or data centre. With 75% of business data to be processed at the edge by 2025, this is where business innovation will be unlocked.

How to Find Reliable and Fast VPNs While Staying Secured

A virtual private network (VPN) provides you anonymity and online privacy through the creation of a private network that cannot be traced on a public internet connection. VPN services provide encrypted and secure connections that offer privacy. Transacting or surfing the web on an unsecured network means that you could be risking your privacy information, since it can be accessed by unauthorized people. This is the primary reason why a VPN is ideal if you are concerned about your online privacy and security. However, there are certain measures that you can take to get the best VPN. Read on to learn how to find reliable and fast VPNs while staying secure.

How to choose a Reliable VPN

If you want to stay secured from public Wi-Fi networks, a VPN is the best solution that you can consider to protect your privacy. However, there are different measures that you should take to choose a reliable and fast VPN. The following are some factors that can help you select the right service provider.

Connections

You need to establish the number of simultaneous connections that a VPN can support. We all have multiple devices that include smartphones, tablets, and computers that we may want to use at the same time. Therefore, a reliable VPN service can use a single account to connect up to five devices simultaneously.

Speed

The connection speed of a VPN depends on different factors like available servers in a specific region. Specialist technicians at VPNBrains explain that traffic is sent via encrypted servers located in different places across the globe and this can affect speed. For example, if the VPN service provider only has one server in your country, it might not be the best choice.

Cost

You should also consider the cost of the VPN service. While you can get a free VPN, it does not offer similar features as compared to paid VPN. On top of that, you must check if the service provider offers data limits.

How a VPN Protects Your Security and Privacy

Data security is critical, especially when using a public Wi-Fi network where other people on the network can access your private information. However, VPN uses encryption to make data unreadable, thereby keeping you secured. The other issue is that your internet service provider can access your entire browsing history.  A VPN helps to hide your search history since your web activity is linked to the VPN server’s address and not yours. With a VPN, all your online activities are kept private. Your VPN can hide a lot of information to keep you secure. Below is the information that your VPN can hide to protect your privacy.

Browsing History

Your internet service provider can track your online activity and get all the details about your searches. The websites also keep your search history, and they can link it with your IP address. Without a VPN, you unknowingly share your information with different people. As a result, you will end up receiving endless and unsolicited emails and adverts from unknown senders.

Protect Your IP Address

An IP address can reveal your exact location, and it becomes easy for unscrupulous internet users to track your online activities. However, with a VPN, the IP address that appears on your search history is not yours but of the service provider. In a country where censorship is rife, a VPN will help to protect your online privacy. In the same vein, a VPN helps to protect your devices from cybercriminals.

Streaming Location

When you travel outside your country, you may not be able to access streaming services, and there are valid reasons for this. However, with a reliable VPN, you can select an IP address from your home country and access your streaming service. The servers in the host country will never pick it, if you are connected to a foreign server.

Internet Freedom

Internet surveillance can deprive you of your freedom since your browsing history can be easily accessed. However, when you have a reliable VPN, there are no fears of being tracked since your browsing history would be hidden. A VPN also protects you against elements like identity theft. This will help you to enjoy internet freedom while being sure that all your information and data are protected.

A VPN provides online anonymity and privacy so that no one can track your browsing history. There are different VPN service providers, and their services are not universal. Therefore, there are various things that you must consider when choosing a VPN. For instance, elements like speed, cost, data limit, and location of servers should help you make an informed decision. No matter which service provider you choose, you should know that a reliable VPN provides security, anonymity, and privacy.

How To Choose Your 3D Printer: Important Features To Consider

You’ve heard what amazing things a 3D printer can build and have decided to buy one. 3D printers offer an endless range of possibilities as long as you’re creative. There’s a catch however, irrespective of what you’re printing, picking the right device plays a huge role in the outcome of the printing.

If you want to get started on printing your models, there’s no limit to what you can do from printing custom phone cases to cosplay designs.

There are various types of 3D printers available today each with their unique specifications like the Toshiba Exclusive Multifunction Dealer in Adelaide & Perth that in turn caters to their various demands. The typical printer is priced between $100 to several thousand dollars depending on its size and capability.

There are technical aspects about the 3D printer you should consider before getting one. Some of which include the different technologies ranging from Fused Deposition Modelling to Digital Light Processing it utilizes as well as stereolithography and much more. This might be quite overwhelming if you’re not much of an expert.

But, don’t worry, with this article you’d be able to find the right choice that suits your needs using some of the features listed below.

1. Heated Bed

This feature is needed for most high-temperature extrusion filaments such as Nylon, ABS, Polycarbonate, and HIPS. Not only is it beneficial for virtually all the materials, but it also ensures the plastic remains warm in the printing process and prevents it from warping.

The heated bed makes sure that there’s better adhesion (gluing) between the layers as this will produce great structural integrity of the printed parts. It is very vital for the first layer so it can ensure a proper foundation level. The typical temperature of the bed is between 40°C to 110°C (under no circumstances should your fingers wander around it).

If you’re going with printers with unheated beds, bear in mind that it can only work with PLA-based plastics and TPUs. Those have a less tendency to warp during the cooling process. The bed is usually covered with PET or painter’s blue tape.

2. LCD Display

The display controller makes it easy for you to 3D print without using a computer system or a software host like Cura. Some of the best resin 3D printer have an LCD display on them such that only an SD card is needed to read the G-code instructions. While this isn’t a very critical feature to look out for when buying, you should consider it as it makes the printing process somewhat less stressful. The display helps you to manage space more efficiently so your computer can perform other tasks. As indicated earlier, it’s really good if you are going to be printing almost every day and can be used for most of your print jobs.

3. Multiple Extruder

Having multiple extruders on your 3D printer means printing various colors or materials simultaneously is possible. You can assign each extruder with the color or material of your choosing. Certain printers are upgradable (can be upgraded from single to multiple extruders) while others can’t. It’s advisable to go for a printer that comes with multiple extruders.

A major benefit of having multiple extruders is that you can set your support structures with various materials that can be dissolved in a  solvent depending on the type of material you used when printing.

4. Cooling Fan

The fan has a very crucial role in 3D printing and it’s a feature every printer must-have. It is not every printing material that requires cooling but it’s beneficial for most prints

The presence of a cooling fan in a  3D printer will improve overhanging features and crisp sharp edges which will result in remarkable bridging ability.

It is important to note that all cooling fans are not created equal. Their sizes range between 25mm to 40mm. Certain fans blow air at the mid-hot-end area, others concentrate on the nozzle’s tip, and others have ducts shaped differently.

5. Hot End

It is probably one of the most vital parts of the 3D printer. The hot end is where plastics are melted and extruded into tiny layers. They are of different types (majorly PEEK and metal-based). The maximum temperature for Peek-based Hot ends (prints thermoplastics) is 230°C and for metal-based ones (prints Nylon, PET, Polycarbonate, and other strong materials), 320°C.

The things to take note of in a hot end include the:

  • maximum printing temperature
  • size of the nozzle and available options for it
  • active cooling

6. Build Area

The build area is the largest size of an object that can be created with the 3D printer. Its dimension is measured in terms of XYZ (breadth, depth, and height).

When you want to print a mug, a typical measurement can be 3 inches wide (X) by 4 inches deep (Y) by 6 inches high (Z) which is 8x8x10 inches.

More complex and larger print jobs can be divided into smaller parts before finally combining them.

Apart from taking note of these important features, you need to consider what product you intend to produce and what type of material would be suitable for it. It would go a long way in helping you to decide what type of printer you should get.

Old People Mayhem Sandbox ‘Just Die Already’ to Launch on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC on May 20th 2021. #Gaming

Having spent the last 12 months couped up in our houses, it’ll soon be time to collectively step out and breathe in the fresh air. Of course, that’s all before we strap two live fireworks to our tender bodies, propelling us up into the sky before we come crashing back down to the ground, landing in the open jaws of a handy shark who has taken refuge in a nearby river.

Oh wait. No. That’s Just Die Already – the old aged pensioner playground that Curve Digital and DoubleMoose can today announce will be launching on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch as well as PC on Steam and Epic Games Store on Thursday May 20th, 2021.

If this is the first time you’ve heard about Just Die Already – and, given we’ve all had so little to do during the last year that even thankless tasks such as “reading a book” or “making conversation with a loved one” have almost seemed legitimate, we frankly find that hard to believe – then hold onto your dentures: Just Die Already tells the tale of old folk who have just been kicked out of their retirement homes, competing with each other to secure a sweet spot some place new by performing dangerous challenges to qualify for free care.

Players can either take on Just Die Already alone or compete in four-player online multiplayer (fully cross-platform too, thanks to Epic Online Services), ticking off dangerous challenges that put your life – and, indeed, every atom of your being – in danger. You’ll lose limbs getting eaten by sharks, you’ll break every single one of your bones, you’ll get squished and squashed and shot to pieces and, if you’re lucky, you’ll stay alive long enough to earn your place at a prized retirement home.

Just Die Already might be a fictional tale of OAPs competing for spots in retirement homes, but given the folks in those homes have food & drink, company, and – most importantly – haircuts on tap, I’m starting to think I should join then,” offers DoubleMoose co-founder Armin Ibrisagic“Seriously, after a year of COVID-dodging, there’s not a single person in a retirement home who doesn’t look younger and fresher than anyone at DoubleMoose. At least we can now take on the comparatively sprightly forms of Just Die Already’s cast of characters when the game launches on May 20th.”

For more insights into Frank’s mind, the protagonist of Just Die Already, follow the Twitter account here: @JustDieGame. Be warned: Frank does not hold back…or even know what Twitter is, really.

Just Die Already will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch as well as PC on Steam and Epic Games Store on Thursday May 20th, 2021 for £11.99/$14.99/€13.99.

Until then, you can pre-order the game on Steam here or on the Epic Game Store here.

Six million batteries recycled through top five supermarkets last year. #WEEE #EarthDay #Recycling

Almost six million batteries were recycled through five supermarkets last year as more people used their grocery shop to do their bit for the planet. Despite the encouraging data, for every 10 AA batteries sold on the market, only four are returned for recycling, with 20% in a recent survey admitting to dumping used batteries in general waste bins.

To coincide with Earth Day today WEEE Ireland is urging the public to gather old batteries for recycling and avoid dumping them in bins, from where they end up in incinerators, meaning precious metals are lost for good.

Aldi leads the charge

WEEE Ireland collected half of the huge haul from Aldi stores, which led the charge on 3.2million, double that of its German rival Lidl on 1.6million.

The e-waste recycling scheme also picked up 850,000 used batteries from Tesco and 224,000 from SuperValu, while Dunnes Stores prevented over 97,000 ending up in landfill.

In total, the equivalent of 21 million AA batteries were recycled by householders in 2020 through retailers and civic amenity sites – an average of four for everyone in Ireland.

“Earth Day is an opportunity for people to stop for a moment to think about how they can make a difference. Recycling batteries is as easy as taking them to your nearest supermarket or recycling centre and plays a huge part in helping protect the environment,” said Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland.

Six million batteries were recycled through Ireland’s main supermarkets last year, but Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland, warns that 20% of us are ignoring the green message and dumping used batteries in general waste bins. Picture: Conor McCabe Photography.

“Rolling lockdowns saw people use more home grooming devices such as electric shavers, games consoles, remote controls, kids’ toys, power tools and fitness equipment – resulting in more batteries being used and many of these ended up in drawers.

“For the millions of batteries not recycled properly every year, we lose precious elements and important resources that could be used again in manufacturing. The hazardous material they release also has an impact on human health and our environment.”

For every battery recycled, WEEE Ireland makes a contribution towards Laura Lynn – and it has confirmed a further €40,000 donation to the children’s hospice.

The gesture will provide much-needed overnight respite stays for 19 children and their families at the hospice this year and brings its overall donation to Laura Lynn to €480,000 since the partnership first began back in 2011.

WEEE Ireland is the country’s largest e-waste recycling scheme, representing most of the Irish battery industry and household, electrical and electronic industry, which has a producer responsibility to organise and finance the environmental management of their products at end of life.
