SMEs – sustainability can lead to cost savings in the long run

Pat Kane is a sustainability advocate and strategist, speaker, writer and the founder of reuzi, a business that has evolved to become a whole hub for environmental living and awareness.

Here Pat writes about sustainability for SMEs – and while some SMEs may perceive sustainable practices as costly, the reality is that they often lead to cost savings in the long run.

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword reserved for large multinational corporations or niche industries; it is a critical business imperative that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot afford to overlook. As global awareness around environmental and social issues grows, SMEs are increasingly recognising that sustainable practices are not just ethically sound, but also economically advantageous. The integration of sustainability into the core strategy of an SME can unlock new opportunities, enhance brand reputation, and build resilience against future challenges.

The importance of sustainability for SMEs stems from several interrelated factors. First and foremost, consumers are becoming more discerning, favouring companies that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices. This shift in consumer behaviour is not a passing trend but a fundamental change in how people choose to spend their money.

SMEs that fail to adapt risk alienating a significant portion of their customer base.

Regulatory landscapes are also evolving, with governments around the world implementing stricter environmental and social governance (ESG) requirements. SMEs that proactively embrace sustainability will find themselves better positioned to comply with these regulations and avoid potential penalties.

Another critical factor is the financial implications of sustainability. Although some SMEs may perceive sustainable practices as costly, the reality is that they often lead to cost savings in the long run. Efficient resource management, waste reduction, and energy-saving measures can significantly lower operating costs. SMEs that incorporate sustainability into their operations are more likely to attract investment, as investors increasingly prioritise companies with strong ESG credentials. These companies are viewed as lower risk, given their proactive approach to managing environmental and social issues, which can lead to better financial performance over time.

Starting on the sustainability journey might seem daunting for SMEs, especially given limited resources and expertise compared to larger companies. However, the key is to start small and gradually build upon those efforts. The first step is to assess the current environmental and social impact of the business. This could involve evaluating energy usage, waste production, supply chain practices, and community engagement. Identifying areas where improvements can be made will provide a clear roadmap for action.

Once the assessment is complete, setting achievable goals is essential. These goals should be specific, measurable, and aligned with the company’s overall business strategy. For example, an SME might commit to reducing its carbon footprint by a certain percentage within a set timeframe or to sourcing a portion of its materials from sustainable suppliers. These goals should be revisited regularly to track progress and make adjustments as needed.

Learning from SMEs that have already embarked on their sustainability journey can provide valuable insights and inspiration. Take, for instance, the story of Innocent Drinks, a UK-based company that started as a small business and has grown into a well-known brand. From the outset, Innocent Drinks placed a strong emphasis on sustainability, using 100% recyclable packaging and committing to sourcing ingredients ethically. Their approach to sustainability is deeply embedded in their brand, which has resonated with consumers and contributed to their success.

Pat Kane

Patagonia is another great example that, while larger, offers lessons in transparency and ethical business practices. They started with small steps like using organic cotton and recycled materials, which over time evolved into a comprehensive sustainability strategy. SMEs can take inspiration from Patagonia’s gradual, transparent approach to incorporating sustainability, understanding that the journey does not have to be perfect from the outset but can develop and improve over time.

Finally, it is important to remember that sustainability is not just about environmental impact; it encompasses social responsibility as well. This means that SMEs should consider how their operations affect employees, communities, and society at large. Building a sustainable business model involves fair labour practices, community engagement, and contributing to the broader social good.

I think it’s fair to say that sustainability is crucial for SMEs not only to stay competitive and compliant in a rapidly changing world but also to ensure long-term viability and success.

Starting with a clear assessment, setting realistic goals, and learning from those who have successfully integrated sustainability into their business practices can set SMEs on the right path. The shift toward sustainability is an ongoing journey, one that offers SMEs the chance to innovate, build stronger relationships with customers and stakeholders, and contribute positively to the world.

Irish research group DIAS involved in world first lunar-Earth flyby

A team of three researchers from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) will play a key role in the first ever spacecraft attempt to fly past the Moon, and then past Earth.  The flyby is set to take place over tomorrow and Tuesday (19-20 August).

The manoeuvre is part of the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission. As well as conducting detailed observations of Jupiter and its moons, the mission will be investigating Jupiter’s moons as possible habitats for life.

The lunar-Earth flyby will be an opportunity for the DIAS team to test their ideas about the spacecraft’s behaviour in the environment of a moon, in preparation for the actual flybys of Jupiter’s moons.

Senior Professor Caitriona Jackman, Dr. Mika Holmberg and Dr. Hans Huybrighs are all members of the DIAS Planetary Magnetospheres Group, which is the only Irish research group involved in the mission.

Commenting on DIAS’s role in the flyby, Prof. Caitriona Jackman, Associated Scientist and Head of the Planetary Magnetospheres Research Group at DIAS, said “We will be monitoring the flyby with trepidation as it’s an extremely challenging undertaking – the slightest mistake could take Juice off course and spell the end of the mission.

“This is the first step in Juice’s journey through the solar system on its way to Jupiter. The spacecraft will use the gravity of the Moon and then Earth to bend its path through space and redirect it on course for a flyby of Venus in August 2025. This will help to ensure it arrives at Jupiter with the right speed and direction. It’s a journey that requires perfect accuracy and in-depth planning.”

“Having this opportunity to test our ideas about the spacecraft’s behaviour in the environment of a moon is truly exciting and will be a huge boost in confidence for our research once Juice arrives at Jupiter. The encounter of Earth’s moon is a practice-run for when we get to Jupiter, where we will study moons with underground oceans that might support life. I’m extremely proud of the work carried out by our research group so far, and that we can be part of such an important mission.”

DIAS expertise

DIAS’s work on this mission will explore how the spacecraft itself affects the measurement of particles, and will use an advanced computer model to investigate this. Commenting on her involvement in this mission, Dr. Mika Holmberg, Research Fellow at DIAS and Co-Investigator on the Radio and Plasma Wave Investigation Instrument, said “The measurements from the lunar-Earth flyby could have a significant impact on our research going forward. The effects of the interaction between the spacecraft and its environment influences our interpretation of the measurements. For example, it might change our understanding of where the moon particles that we are trying to detect come from, or how many there are.

“The computer simulations account for the environment of the spacecraft and models how the moon particles will be affected, so that we can correct potential misleading effects for later in the mission. When Juice flies by the Moon we have the first opportunity to test our correction techniques during an actual moon encounter, which is exciting. It’s the perfect opportunity for us to calibrate our instruments and smooth out any remaining issues, and who knows what it could lead to!”

Dr Hans Huybrighs, Research Fellow at DIAS and Associated Scientist of the Particle Environment Package instrument explains that the main objectives of the mission are to study the abilities of Jupiter’s moons to host life, which requires accurate and detailed measurements. “Jupiter’s moons slowly release particles from their surface. In some cases, this release could happen through water eruptions that produce 100-kilometre-tall plumes. By detecting these particles, we can learn more about the moons’ potential to support life. Investigating how Juice can best detect these plumes is one of the topics we are working on at DIAS.”

DIAS as a leader in space research

Commenting on DIAS’s role in space research, Dr. Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS said, “It’s fascinating to follow the spacecraft’s journey through the solar system with incredibly complex manoeuvres. Scientists around the world have been carefully planning this route over the last 20 years and it’s a huge honour that DIAS is playing a role in this mission. This flyby is hugely important as it’s one of the few opportunities to make certain measurements and adjustments during Juice’s eight-year journey to Jupiter.

“DIAS has a long history in being at the forefront of Ireland’s involvement in cutting-edge space research with the James Webb Space Telescope, and now our contribution to the Juice mission. We have been following Juice’s progress closely since its launch in April 2023. We are very proud of the work of our researchers, and we are looking forward to updates on the progress of the flyby.”

The Juice mission is being led by the European Space Agency, of which Ireland is a member state. 18 different research institutes, 23 countries, 83 different companies and more than 2000 people have contributed to the mission.

DIAS’ work on this mission is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and a European Space Agency fellowship held by Dr. Mika Holmberg. Further Information about DIAS’ involvement in the Juice mission can be found here: https://www.dias.ie/cosmicphysics/astrophysics/astro-Juice/

The OpenRock X Open-Ear Air Conduction Sport Earbuds are their latest product on offer from the brand and this time packed with new features and a new app which is a great start.

Presentation is excellent with a cool styled box and an even better earbuds case that slides open with a press and the earbuds seperated in the middle with housed in an aluminium case.

These are secure and fit well on the ears and will not fall off so ideal for the gym bus/train commutes jogging or cycling and really anyone basically.

There is decent battery life here too with up to 48 hrs in total however will vary with EQ and volume settings. the case is on the large side but will give you plenty of juice on the go and they can fast charge too with 5 mins charging giving you 1 hr which is good.

The sound though.. The sound is actually excellent and leaning toward headphones and earbuds quality and with their app really gives you a better than expected immersive experience they get decently loud too and no issues with lag latency or tinny sound maxed out on volume, there is a volume limiter on board but why bother with that but that is just me I prefer to tune things up to the max.

The new app is quite good with a simple UI and looks good and simple to use with all the features expected, you can customize to your own needs and all feature are there such as call control, voice assistant access, higher and lower volume and change tracks so everything you need is there.

Check out the video review below for a closer look at how they work and their app and listen to more on what I have just said, these are certainly easy to recommend in my opinion.

Galway County Council digitally maps the heritage of over 25,000 memorials

Esri Ireland, the market leader in geographic information systems (GIS), today announces that Galway County Council has digitally mapped over 25,000 memorials, monuments, and gravestones using Esri’s ArcGIS system. As part of a community-focused project across the county of Galway, Esri’s technology is being used to create a fully digitised process for capturing information about graveyard memorials and making it publicly accessible online.

Throughout Galway, there are 235 council-owned graveyards with ancient monuments and gravestones that provide invaluable insight into family ancestry and social history. Previously, community groups in Galway have endeavoured to capture this culturally significant information, using pen and paper to manually note memorial inscriptions.

Galway County Council’s interactive map, accessed through the Graveyard Memorial Search App, enables volunteers and heritage professionals to view and capture data and images in real-time on their mobile devices. It provides aerial photography of each graveyard, allowing users to zoom into pictorial maps of graveyards on their devices, and accurately identify each gravestone and record data pertaining to it. It also allows citizens to search for burial records and ancestors’ graves, and many graveyards can be explored in 3D, giving people an immersive, realistic experience of visiting family memorials.

The online map provides a streamlined, cloud-based process for collecting, validating, managing and sharing memorial data. It has made the process ten times faster and delivers more accurate and consistent data, which will help to preserve Galway’s graveyard heritage for future generations.

This is leading to increased community engagement, and more than 50 local groups are now using the solution. It is also being used by historians, archaeologists, genealogists and health researchers, as well as schools.

Already, data on over 35 graveyards is available via the app, providing citizens with easy, online access to ancestry information. With over 30 further graveyard surveys planned or in progress, Galway County Council, with support from the Heritage Council, is rapidly expanding the amount of information available via the app. The technology can also be replicated by other county councils and used by all kinds of community groups going forward.

Barry Doyle, GIS Manager, Galway County Council, said: “Simplicity is key to all of this. Everything is done in one efficient, seamless process where the data is stored and accessed centrally in the cloud. With this ArcGIS process we are enabling community groups to achieve their heritage objectives.

Marie Mannion, Heritage Officer, Galway County Council, said: “Digitising Galway’s graveyard heritage has been a powerful way to enable people to learn about the local and national heritage that can be found in graveyards. People can now search for and find photographs of their family’s memorials online and form a stronger connection with their past. It’s an incredible resource for everyone.”

Jack Ffrench, Account Manager, Esri Ireland, said: “Being able to access local heritage, digitally, for Galway citizens has been a really important project to work on and exemplifies the true power of GIS technology. It is rewarding for us to be able to work with local communities, and bringing this important history to life will ensure that Galway’s past can become part of its present. We are looking forward to continuing to work with Galway County Council and seeing how this use case could be repeated within other councils, as well as a wide variety of community groups, in the future.”
