Can tech help tighten supply chains and boost project efficiency?

The construction sector’s supply chains remain under extreme pressure. Despite the worst effects of the pandemic now slowly subsiding, other factors, such as labour shortages and inflation, are likely to remain amplified. Delays can seriously impact a contractor’s balance sheet if not accounted for. Simon Herod from EstimateOne digs deeper…

Even pre-COVID, the intricacies of the supply chain often gave rise to inefficiencies and delays, ultimately hindering construction projects’ progress. Now, with labour shortages and rising inflation, the industry must turn to digital technology to help them centralise and reshape their supply chains. While these problems may appear to be ‘on-site’ issues, steps taken by the estimating and procurement teams is the first step towards alleviating risk.

Having engaged in daily conversations with estimators over the past six years, it is apparent that the workings of the industry’s supply chain are far from simple. The process of sending out project specifications, obtaining quotes, and aligning subcontractor services with the main project contractor can often result in a mixed-matched supply chain that’s confusing for everyone. Online tendering is part of the solution.

So, let’s get into the tips and tricks to ensure your supply chain is running like a well-oiled machine…

Casting a Wider Net

Due to insolvencies, no one’s subcontractor network looks like it did pre-pandemic, and as the availability of skilled labour continues to dwindle, main contractors must now look to expand their horizons and seek out new sources of supply beyond their usual go-to pool of subbies. For these working partnerships to succeed, seamless collaboration throughout the build is non-negotiable.

Digital tendering platforms, like EstimateOne, aim to create a buffer against construction delays and disruptions, ensuring smoother project execution. Empowering main contractors and subbies alike is the aim. With automated platforms, contractors can advertise job opportunities and extend invitations to potential subcontractors to submit quotes, cutting out the back and forth.

Constantly refreshing your network is important to keep a competitive edge. Broadening your pool of suppliers, main contractors can bolster their resilience and reduce their dependency on a limited set of subbies.

Automate, Centralise & Collaborate

In the face of challenges, the evolving landscape of the construction industry has compelled main contractors to reimagine their supply chain strategies all together. The persistent labour and material shortages have pushed contractors to evaluate and adopt alternative approaches to sourcing subcontractors. Even the smallest blip holds the potential to throw your supply chain into chaos; having a centralised digital platform could mitigate this risk.

In the hustle and bustle of the construction game, when it comes to tendering, it’s all about building connections, not drowning in a sea of paperwork. Trusting old-school methods for managing tenders can lead to missed chances and quotes that are way past their prime. Collaborative networks offered by these platforms make it easy to keep documents safe, work together seamlessly, and track quote progress in real-time. Your estimators won’t be wasting time sifting through quotes or splitting doc packages, but investigating the real deal – actual quotes.

Automation doesn’t always mean relying on a robot to get the job done. This automation equals faster processes that remove the repetitive tasks and let you get back to the build at hand. Automated addenda management can remove the risk of document superseding mistakes. Access to digital document audit trails provides a helpful overview of which subcontractor has which document and reduces the risk of document disputes.

The future supply chain

The rocky supply chain shows that it’s time the industry looks towards automation in order to diversify – the tendering process is no exception. When both parties do better, subbies win more work, and you have more accurate quotes, it’s simple! We aren’t calling for a complete tech-infused makeover, but instead start to embrace the streamlined processes that let you get back to fostering solid relationships. Because, in the end, our aim is all about bringing things together for enhanced teamwork and smooth builds.

Top Password Practices Everyone Should Follow

You’ve probably heard it a thousand times, but it’s worth repeating: your password is your first line of defense against cyber threats. It’s crucially important, yet so often neglected. So, let’s dive into some top-notch password practices that you should be following to keep your digital footprint secure.

Use A Password Manager

One effective practice to fortify your online security is the use of a password manager. Now, you might be wondering what this is and how it can help you out. A password manager is a highly secure tool that generates, stores, and manages all your passwords.

This means you don’t have to remember a multitude of complex, unique passwords, which is what you need in today’s digital age to keep hackers at bay. People also often use a Dashlane’s generator to make it easier for them to create a strong and unbreakable code. The password manager does the heavy lifting for you, creating strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts. Plus, it employs encryption techniques to ensure your passwords are securely stored. This way, you’re not only making your digital life a lot easier but also a whole lot safer.

Implement Various Characters

It’s absolutely essential that you use different characters in an order that only you will understand. These should be the following:

  • uppercase letters
  • lowercase letters
  • numbers
  • special characters

Implementing a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters in your password significantly increases its complexity. This diversity of characters makes it harder for hackers to guess or crack your password through brute force attacks, thereby enhancing your security. Essentially, the greater the variety of characters used, the stronger the password becomes.

Enable Two-factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is another crucial layer of security to make your passwords stronger. It works by demanding two forms of identification before granting access. So, even if someone manages to guess your password, they won’t be able to access your account without the second form of verification.

Typically, this second factor could be a message sent to your phone, a fingerprint scan, or facial recognition. By adding this extra step, you’re drastically reducing the chances of unauthorized access. It’s like having a second lock on your door, making it doubly hard for intruders to break in.

Regularly Update Passwords

Regularly updating your passwords is akin to changing the locks on your door periodically – it maintains a strong barrier against potential threats. As cyber criminals continuously evolve their techniques, even complex codes can eventually be cracked. By regularly changing your password, you keep these perpetrators on their toes, rendering any of their possible previous knowledge about your passwords useless.

This practice is especially significant if there’s a chance your account details have been compromised. By updating your password, you’re essentially evicting any unsanctioned users from your account. Therefore, periodic password updates form a dynamic and robust defense, contributing to a stronger password strategy.

In conclusion, your online security is worth the extra effort. Embrace these practices – using a password manager, mixing up characters, enabling two-factor authentication, and refreshing your passwords regularly. These steps help maintain a sturdy defense against cyber threats, ensuring your digital world remains secure and your peace of mind intact. Remember, a strong password equals strong protection.

Cash for tech trash – but are Irish consumers ready?

New research commissioned by Europe’s leading online destination for buying and selling refurbished iPhones, Swappie has highlighted the fact that Irish people are a nation of hoarders, at least when it comes to tech. This latest survey, conducted by market research company, Kantar shows that while 47% of Irish people are aware they can sell their old iPhone, they hadn’t considered doing so.

Despite an increased awareness and appreciation among consumers for the refurbished tech industry, it appears people haven’t quite got their heads around the ease of selling their old smartphone and the rewards that come with doing so. Of the 1,000 people surveyed between March and April of this year, 48% of respondents with a broken smartphone did not know they could get cash for it.

In fact, when it comes to passing on old devices only 21% said they would consider selling their old smartphone to an online store, preferring instead to sell to a friend or relative (45%), to an electronics or retail store (37%) or to another consumer via a marketplace (35%).

Most interestingly for companies like Swappie, whose end-to-end model hinges on consumers’ willingness to part with old tech, is the indication that individuals seem determined to hold on to old devices whether they are fully functional or faulty. More than half of respondents (56%) wanted to keep their functioning device as a spare phone however 1 in 4 simply felt it was too much effort to sell the device.

The recent launch of Swappie’s Premium Series addressed consumer concerns around the cosmetic quality and battery life of refurbished smartphones. In the same way, refining the company’s resale and refurbishment offering from a procedural perspective looks to drive the circular message home.

“Improving our resale and refurbishment offering is key to ensuring consumers get the most out of their old tech. We want people to understand that even if the device is faulty or broken – we can put it to use! That’s a key component of the circular model. We receive iPhones in all kinds of conditions, but our dedicated experts in Europe can refurbish whole handsets or repurpose old parts to give tech that would otherwise sit in a drawer a new life. Recently, we’ve improved the efficiency of our resale site, lowered shipping costs and made a whole host of minor – but essential, improvements to ensure it’s as simple and efficient as possible to sell your old iPhone to Swappie.” Luisa Vasconcelos e Sousa, Country Manager for Ireland.

Is The Office v Working From Home Battle Coming To An End?

Three years on from the first Covid lockdowns, is the on-going conflict between working from home and returning to the office, coming to an amicable end?

Global video conferencing manufacturer Boom Collaboration feels peace might finally be on the horizon, as a clearer and more consistent picture begins to emerge.

Texas-based Boom Collaboration was founded by Fredrik Hörnkvist and Holli Hulett in 2020, ironically right in the middle of the pandemic! The company initially saw an explosion in demand for USB home working devices but is now witnessing a 40% rise in office video bars plus a 32% growth in high performance PTZ cameras and expandable audio devices, this year.

Office real estate apocalypse

“Through these interesting, challenging and evolving times, from lockdowns to hybrid working, conferencing has been at the fulcrum of dramatic changes in daily and working life; how people interact and communicate, almost from anywhere,” Hulett explained.

“In many ways there’s no going back to how we were before in an increasingly AI-driven world.”

She says the impact on the office property market has been particularly hardest hit with the true costs yet to fully emerge.

“There are widespread reports of a $500 billion ‘office real estate apocalypse’ where the effect of remote working in the US is even worse than expected,” she highlighted. “But what is in little doubt is how offices around the world have had to restructure to the ‘new normal’ creating more huddle room facilities to accommodate more video meetings.”

Hörnkvist, who recently visited the UK, noted: “We know these trends are mirrored around the world with one in five Londoners estimated to be working remotely, while four out of ten balance working from home with going to the office. Three-quarters would leave their job if they were no longer able to work from home for some of the week, according to one recent study.”

But he feels ‘it’s a lot more complicated argument than just wanting to work from home’.

Mixed bag

“There’s still a ton of companies pushing hybrid and in person. Maybe the real estate crash will not be that bad. Time will tell.

“Some companies at first were looking to go full remote but now they have requested staff to come back. Some went full time whilst others prefer hybrid. Some will never go back. It’s kind of a mixed bag. The key is to be flexible to maintain their culture and retain a happy workforce.”

Going full remote can be difficult to achieve, according to Hulett. “Even here at Boom we are a relatively small team dispersed across many miles but we all value getting together in person on a regular basis when we can. There’s a balance.

“Face-to-face meetings and direct human interaction on a regular basis matter and add value in so many ways. There’s social interaction as well as business benefits.

“However much some people want to work from home in terms of a work life balance, they still need to be face-to-face regularly, rather than just being isolated. Obviously high performance video technology offers a compelling alternative.”

She continued: “One of the main arguments I used to hear from friends is, what is the point of being in the office if my colleagues are not there so I end up on a video call anyway that I could have made from home?

“Regular patterns of behaviour are being formed with people in the office with key colleagues when they need to be, and working remotely too. This can boost business productivity and smooth any friction between departments.”

No war

Hulett concluded: “Over recent years there seems to have been a constant battle between the office or hybrid work. But it doesn’t need to be that way. There’s a benefit to both and that’s certainly the view of many of our customers around the world.

“Our portfolio is built with tomorrow’s meetings in mind. We offer future proof solutions with solid components and technology to stand the test of time. From all-in-one-systems to multiple video camera mixing controllers and full room solutions.

“We recognise quality makes a huge difference. It really matters. That’s why we went straight into 4K picture resolution for example. 4K is the future. It’s about continually raising the game and raising the bar. Our flexible technology covers all bases.

“Wherever people are working the latest video conferencing technology can help. The battle is over. There’s no war. Peace is being restored.”

They are joined by North Yorkshire based Land Rover specialists Greenwood Automotive, who leverage in-depth engineering knowledge and passion to turn the iconic off-roaders into desirable, state of the art machines. Greenwood will install kits for all Defender and Series Land Rover models.

The first of the new Stateside partners is InoKinetic of Murrieta, California, a firm renowned for its work to hone and modify a range of niche performance machines, with a particular focus on British sports cars.  InoKinetic will be offering the full conversion kit range, for the classic 911, E-Type, Land Rover Defender and Series models, as well as the Triumph Stag and original Mini.

Customers on the East Coast will be catered for by New Jersey based Land Rover specialists Whittam Engineering – experts in modifying and restoring the British off-roaders. Whittam will provide conversions for Defenders of all eras, along with the other kits in the Electrogenic range.

Transformative EV technology, developed in Britain

Electrogenic’s innovative range of kits is produced under the outfit’s ‘Powered by Electrogenic’ technology arm, and comprises options for the Land Rover Defender, Jaguar E-Type, classic Porsche 911, original Mini as well as the Triumph Stag. Different specifications of battery and motors are available for each model – catering to a broad range of customer needs and budgets.

All the ‘drop-in’ kits are defined by their quality and depth of engineering, developed in-house by a research and development team comprising leading automotive engineers, programmers and electrical experts, and overseen by former Arrival Ltd Chief Engineer, Francis Prime.

The ‘plug and play’ powertrain solutions reflect Electrogenic’s approach of developing and manufacturing its own technology, which includes in-house designed software, printed circuit boards (PCBs) and digital dashboards, as well as bespoke Battery Management Systems and vehicle charging technology. The driver interface also gets attention, with sport, eco and traffic modes, as well as a regen-based hill-descent control function for the Defender.

Electrogenic’s cleverly packaged drop-in kits also use highly innovative mechanical componentry, including a unique system for creating high-density battery packs, as well as exceptionally compact in-line and transverse reduction gearboxes, all manufactured in the UK. The neat packaging solutions ensure that for each ‘drop-in’ kit variant, the existing vehicles’ existing structure and architecture is preserved. This approach ensures that all Electrogenic conversions are entirely reversible.

All drop-in kits drive through single speed, fixed ratio transmissions, and are capable of up to 6.6kW AC charging, as well as rapid CCS charging, for total convenience.

Drummond concluded: “This announcement represents another significant moment for Electrogenic, as we continue to take our business to the next stage, further developing our world-wide reach. We’ve seen great interest in our EV conversion kits from all over the globe since we revealed them – particularly in North America and the UK.

“Our strengthened network enables us to meet this demand, helping more people than ever before to convert iconic models to EV power. And we’re not stopping here, we’ll be announcing partners for other territories in the coming weeks and months, so watch this space.”
