Aer Lingus Unveils Major Mobile App Upgrade

Aer Lingus has unveiled a major refresh of its mobile app, as part of an extensive upgrade programme designed to transform the digital travel experience for its customers. This multi-million euro app investment is a key milestone in the airline’s broader digital vision to become a leader in customer-centric travel innovation.

The new and improved Aer Lingus app introduces several new features aimed at delivering a more seamless, intuitive and helpful experience for customers, especially on the day of travel. These enhancements were developed in close collaboration with a dedicated research panel of 1,300 Aer Lingus customers, ensuring that the upgrades reflect genuine passenger needs and preferences.

The mobile app upgrade has already resonated strongly with users, as reflected in the app’s jump in ratings, from 3 stars to 4.8 on Android and 4.7 on iOS. App downloads have also increased by one-third (33%) compared to the same period last year. Over 2.2 million people in Ireland and 3.5 million globally have used the Aer Lingus mobile app in the last 12 months, showing the growing importance of mobile-first options for customers.

Key app updates include:

  • Live Flight Status via Live Activities, viewable directly on users’ locked screens, keeping passengers informed in real-time.
  • Wayfinding Support through Dublin Airport and New York (JFK), providing easy navigation to gates and key amenities.
  • Redesigned Home Screen, streamlining navigation for faster access to critical information.
  • A completely reimagined My Trips section, now featuring a travel assistant and streamlined access to trip extras, greatly improving the day-of-travel experience. Almost 90% of app users from a recent survey of 5,000 rated the improved My Trips section either 4 or 5 stars.

“Aer Lingus’ app upgrade is much more than just a facelift, it’s a major step forward in delivering a smarter, more personalised travel experience for our customers,” said Susanne Carberry, Chief Customer Officer at Aer Lingus. “From real-time updates to in-airport navigation, we’re committed to improving every touchpoint of our customers’ journey. These improvements reflect our ongoing investment in digital innovation and our belief that technology plays a central role in creating the best possible travel experience.”

This latest app refresh is part of a larger, multi-year digital transformation initiative at Aer Lingus focused on using technology to simplify, support and enhance the end-to-end customer journey.

The Aer Lingus app is available to download on iOS and Android.

Walter Walsh Launches New Digital Platform SocialTies

Today, SocialTies, a new free digital platform co-founded by three-time All-Ireland winner Walter Walsh, has officially launched. Built for community groups, such as schools, and grassroots organisations, SocialTies brings everything – from fixtures and results to ticketing, training resources, messaging, and exclusive content – into one unified, branded space. Designed around the real needs of today’s communities, the platform puts connection, identity, and community impact at its core.

Walter and his team have addressed a common frustration faced by organisations, relying on multiple disconnected tools to manage day-to-day communication and operations. Instead of navigating between group chats, outdated websites and scattered emails, SocialTies brings everything into one streamlined, purpose-built environment, finally offering a digital solution tailored to how real communities work.

“We built SocialTies because communities deserve better,” said Walter Walsh, CEO and Co-Founder of SocialTies, “For too long, they’ve been expected to make do with outdated websites, scattered group chats, and platforms that were never built for them. This isn’t about adding more noise, it’s about giving community groups, schools and grassroots organisations the digital infrastructure to connect, grow, and take ownership of their space online.”

Walter Walsh Launches New Digital Platform SocialTies – techbuzzireland

SocialTies is built on a new advertising model that delivers value to both communities and businesses. The platform is completely free to use both for individual users and the organisations themselves, with revenue generated through its Community Shared Advertising Model. Businesses gain targeted access to engaged, local audiences in a trusted environment, while 50% of all ad revenue is returned directly to the organisations and communities using the platform.

Brendan Kavanagh, Co-Founder of SocialTies, said: “Too many community platforms fail because they rely on goodwill, not good models. With SocialTies, we set out to create something that’s commercially robust and genuinely useful – it is a platform where local advertisers can reach engaged audiences in a meaningful way, while directly funding the communities they care about. It’s digital advertising that delivers real ROI.”

The first live platform built on SocialTies is Kilkenny Cats Social, created in partnership with Kilkenny GAA. As the pilot rollout, it demonstrates how the platform can be adapted to reflect the identity and structure of any organisation, in this case, one of Ireland’s most iconic sporting communities. Beyond content and communication, the partnership highlights SocialTie’s mission of community engagement at all levels – 50% of all advertising revenue generated on the app goes directly back to Kilkenny GAA, supporting grassroots development and major projects like the new Centre of Excellence.

Walsh, a former Kilkenny Senior hurler added “Kilkenny has given me so much, on and off the pitch, so launching our flagship product here means a huge amount to me. We built Kilkenny Cats Social to reflect everything this county stands for: pride, purpose, and community. I’m proud that we’re starting in Kilkenny, and even prouder that every tap, every ad, and every message on the platform gives something back to the place that shaped me.”

VSCO Capture Available in Ireland

VSCO Capture enables photographers to shoot with more creative control in the moment. The free app provides precise editing controls and a wide range of popular presets within an intuitive interface. It’s designed to help creators capture their creative point of view, refine it, and edit in real-time, as they’re shooting VSCO Capture, is an experiential photo app from VSCO that’s now available in the Irish app store as a part of an early/open beta release.
The presets and effects are non-destructive, meaning the original image is retained (JPEG/HEIC/RAW/ProRAW formats) and can be further modified in VSCO Studio or with other advanced editing software. VSCO Capture is a free app and includes 50 VSCO presets (including the latest We The Creator presets), as well as Bloom and Halation effects.
The app is only available in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand for now and will likely be more broadly available in the U.S. and around the world later this summer

Award winning Shannon Teen to Represent Ireland in the Technovation Global Semi Finals with Dementia Support App

Chloe O’Loughlin, a 2nd year student in St. Patrick’s Comprehensive School in Shannon, won the Junior category award at the Technovation Ireland Regional Pitch Event (RPE) in AMD’s Headquarters CityWest Dublin. Chloe has been working on an app to help people with dementia since she started the Teen-Turn afterschool program in January. Twelve weeks of mentoring and support led to the big event, with Chloe winning the Junior category. 65 projects from 8 counties and more than 20 schools were submitted to Technovation from Ireland this year. Chloe will now represent Ireland in the semi-finals of the global competition.

This project was particularly personal to Chloe who had a dream to help people suffering with dementia in a simple and easy way. She said: ‘I have relatives with dementia. I see firsthand the effects that it has on them.  I wanted to think of something that would help them.’

It was this initial thought that led her to create and develop her app called Brain Track. “The app features a to-do list, calendar, to keep track of different appointments and allows relatives and caregivers to keep an eye on them.” An additional feature of the app is a profile page where the user or their relatives can input profiles of the people around them including photos and key details about that person. Chloe believes that to be a very important feature for the wellbeing of the person with dementia and a reassurance to their loved ones. “If someone with dementia were to forget someone’s name, they can go into the app and remind themselves of their name, which would save them the frustration of having to ask the person directly.”

Chloe committed to 12 weeks of staying after school with more than 10 other girls in the group to learn to code, develop a business plan and pitch to judges. Her mentor Donna O’Sullivan, who is also a teacher at the school, applauded Chloe for her commitment and dedication to the project and app. “Chloe has shown tremendous dedication and commitment to attending our Teen-Turn sessions after school each week and made superb progress during that time. We are so proud of what she has achieved and grateful to Teen-Turn for their continued support in developing tech skills for our girls.”

Chloe really enjoyed participating in Teen-Turn’s afterschool program and said “I really enjoyed working with everyone in the group. We got tons of different ideas and opinions when putting it all together and it’s great to see how the others projects were coming along.” Chloe also benefited from extra sessions held by Teen-Turn over the midterm in partnership with PayPal and on two Super Session Saturdays where the girls had the opportunity to gain in person mentorship in University of Limerick from academic staff and Immersive Software Engineering students.

On the day of the RPE Chloe said that she was a little apprehensive to pitch to the judges but that she found the experience to be a very powerful one.  “I was very nervous, but the judges were really nice and once I started, I was more excited than nervous. They genuinely wanted to find out more about the app and how it works.” Chloe was overjoyed to take first place on the day, winning a laptop with AMD chip technology, and is looking forward to the next stage of the competition.

So what does the future hold for Chloe and Brain Track? I definitely want to continue with Teen-Turn and with Project Squad and Technovation in the future because I really enjoyed it.’ says Chloe who is very excited at the thought of possibly bringing the app to the market in the future. “I think the app will help people  and I want to continue improving it.” Chloe hopes that she can make the future a little brighter for those with dementia and their loved ones.

Redesigned Airbnb app now available for Summer 2025

Today, Airbnb unveiled its 2025 Summer Release, ushering in a brand new era of travel from the company that first introduced a way to book a home like a hotel in 2007.  With today’s launch, Airbnb is going beyond homes and introducing two offerings – Airbnb Services and completely reimagined Airbnb Experiences.

This is all powered by a new tech stack that allows hosts to offer homes, services, and experiences – and many more offerings in the years ahead. The new Airbnb app – now available to download – features a new design system with a beautifully animated interface that brings the world of Airbnb to life.

  • Built on a new tech stack–Over the past several years, Airbnb has rebuilt its technology stack, including overhauling and modernising the app experience. This new tech stack now allows hosts to introduce even more offerings in the years ahead.
  • A dimensional design system–Airbnb created a design system with a dimensional and beautifully animated interface – including with new 3D iconography – that brings the world of Airbnb to life, so planning your trip feels effortless and delightful.
  • The app that travels with you–From the moment you book your home, the app suggests services and experiences we think you’ll love – and when you arrive at your destination, the app welcomes you with a detailed itinerary, with recommendations for experiences happening nearby throughout your stay.
  • Explore homes, services and experiences–Users logging into Airbnb starting today will now find an entirely new homepage, where you can discover homes in popular destinations, experiences that fit your schedule, and services around the world.

Airbnb Experiences

One of the top reasons people book an Airbnb is because they can live like a local. But it’s hard to find the best things to do when you’re somewhere new. Too often, you end up in a big group, following a tour guide with a megaphone, doing activities that feel like you’re ticking a box. What if there was a more authentic way to experience a city?

Today, we’re introducing completely reimagined Airbnb Experiences – hosted by locals who know their city best. We’re launching experiences in over 650 cities around the world and adding more every day. Uncover the best parts of a city with experiences like:

Reimagined nearly every part of the app, including:

  • Explore tab –  An all-new homepage to discover homes in popular destinations, experiences that fit your schedule, and services around the world.
  • Trips tab  An advanced travel itinerary with a schedule of your trip, details about your home, and the services and experiences you’ve booked.
  • Messages – A revamped messaging platform with photo and video sharing and integrated payments for customising services.
  • Profile – A redesigned Airbnb profile lets you share where you’ve travelled on Airbnb and see the people you’ve met along the way. Airbnb profiles also highlight the over 200 million guests and hosts worldwide who have completed our identity verification process.

Rebuilt the app for hosts to include everything they need to manage their home, service or experience:

  • Airbnb Setup – A simplified listing creation tool makes it easy for hosts to submit a service or experience to Airbnb.
  • Today tab – An all-new reservations management tab makes it easy to see details about upcoming reservations to help hosts provide exceptional hospitality.
  • Calendar – A redesigned calendar for homes, features a new daily view  with an hour-by-hour schedule and real-time integration with Google Calendar.
  • Listings tab – New listing management tools for services and experiences make it easy for hosts to adjust every aspect of their listing, from location to pricing.

Surprisingly Useful Apps That Are Completely Free to Use

In today’s app stores, it’s easy to assume that anything genuinely useful will come with a price tag. Many apps start free but quickly introduce limits, paywalls, or subscription models once you’ve settled in. However, several apps are still available that offer impressive features and real value, completely free of charge.

From outdoor adventures and everyday organisation to entertainment and learning, some apps match their paid counterparts and often outperform them regarding accessibility and ease of use. These aren’t just tools with basic functionality—they’re well-rounded platforms that serve a clear purpose without asking for your card details.

Free Entertainment with a Different Approach

Digital games often come with the expectation of in-app purchases or subscriptions, but sweepstakes-based gaming apps offer an alternative. These platforms feature casino-style games like slots and blackjack with all the fun, but use virtual currencies instead of real money.

They’re legal in many areas where traditional online casinos aren’t and don’t require players to deposit funds. New Sweep Casinos offer a good example of how some free apps are able to deliver premium-style entertainment without upfront costs or commitments—ideal for casual, no-risk gameplay.

Exploring the Outdoors with AllTrails

Apps that encourage time away from screens are equally making their mark. AllTrails is a well-known platform for walking, hiking, and cycling, providing a vast catalogue of trails with map data, difficulty ratings, and user reviews.

The free version grants access to most of these features, making it a popular choice for anyone exploring nature locally or while travelling. While an optional paid upgrade exists, the free version is fully functional for everyday use and ideal for casual users. Safety and security remain a concern, however, especially concerning tracking and sharing location information so users are encouraged to be cautious when using such apps.

Borrowing Books Digitally Through Libby

Libby is another excellent example of a service that gives users access to something valuable without cost. It links with your local library account and lets you borrow ebooks and audiobooks digitally. Rather than paying per book or subscribing to a content service, users browse and borrow as they would with a physical library. It’s a seamless way to enjoy books from your phone or tablet, whether commuting, travelling, or relaxing at home.

Design Tools Without the Price Tag

In graphic design, Canva has become a go-to for non-designers looking to create polished visuals. From social media posts and event flyers to CVs and presentations, Canvas’s free version includes a wide selection of templates, fonts, and images. It’s easy to use and requires no previous design experience. While some additional features are available to pro users, most people find the free version more than adequate for everyday projects.

Learning and Discovery with PlantNet

For those interested in the natural world, PlantNet is an app that lets users identify plants by simply taking a photo. The app analyses the image and offers possible matches, drawing on an extensive, community-supported database. It’s used by hobbyists, students, and casual explorers alike, and the entire identification process is available without charge.

Apps like this are part of a broader trend in tech-driven nature tools, which have seen a surge in popularity in recent years. These platforms are helping people reconnect with the outdoors and foster a more profound curiosity about biodiversity. PlantNet stands out as a simple yet powerful example of technology applied practically and educationally.

Free Language Learning Through Duolingo

Language learning apps often fall under the paid model, but Duolingo is an exception that continues to grow. It offers lessons in more than 30 languages and structures them in a way that encourages daily practice. The gamified format appeals to a broad audience, and while there is an ad-free version for paying users, the whole learning path is free. Duolingo is a strong option for those looking to learn a new language without investing in expensive courses.

Medication Management at No Cost

Healthcare-related apps are also providing practical benefits for free. In the UK, services like Echo allow users to order prescriptions, track deliveries, and set medication reminders. This is particularly useful for people managing long-term prescriptions, and the ability to organise everything through a smartphone app adds absolute convenience. The service is free and contributes to improved medication management without extra fees.

Reducing Food Waste While Saving

Too Good To Go has also gained popularity for its role in fighting food waste. The app connects users with nearby cafés, restaurants, and bakeries offering surplus food at reduced prices. While there is a small fee for purchasing the food, the app itself is free and serves a broader social purpose by helping prevent edible food from going to waste.

Smarter Transport Information

For public transport users, Moovit offers real-time updates and journey-planning tools that are often more accurate than generic map apps. Covering bus, train, and tram services worldwide in many towns and cities, Moovit provides information on delays, alternative routes, and estimated arrival times. Moovit is entirely free and supports more reliable travel planning, particularly in areas with frequent service changes.

From fitness and productivity to entertainment and education, these tools demonstrate that high-quality digital services don’t always come with a cost. For those willing to explore, functional and free apps offering real benefits without requiring a monthly commitment are still possible.

Runners Urged To Follow These Tips If Using Strava Or Similar Apps

With marathon season in full swing and the London Marathon fast approaching, more runners are hitting the pavement, and many are turning to apps like Strava to track their progress, connect with fellow athletes, and stay motivated. While these platforms offer valuable insights and a strong sense of community, they also present potential privacy risks if not used carefully. Expert, Joerg Nottebaum from SportsMillions shares crucial insights on how runners can stay safe while using tracking apps.
“Apps like Strava are fantastic tools, but they can unintentionally expose runners to security threats if they don’t configure their privacy settings correctly. It’s essential to take simple precautions to protect your data while enjoying your training.”
To help runners stay secure, here are five crucial tips that can safeguard privacy while using Strava and similar apps:
1. Adjust Your Privacy Settings
Most running apps, including Strava, offer privacy controls to limit who can see your activity. Enable features such as “Private Mode” or “Enhanced Privacy” to restrict visibility to approved followers.
“Many runners don’t realise that by default, their activity may be visible to anyone. A quick check of your privacy settings can significantly reduce potential risks.”
Additionally, consider hiding your start and end points to prevent revealing your home or workplace location.
2. Be Mindful of Route Sharing
While it’s tempting to share your favourite running routes or personal bests online, doing so publicly may expose sensitive location data.
“Think twice before posting routes that start or end near your home. If someone is tracking your activity, they can easily figure out your daily patterns.”
Opt for generic or pre-set route names instead of personalised titles that disclose your location.
3. Use a Different Name or Alias
Instead of displaying your full name on Strava or similar apps, consider using a nickname or initials. This simple step helps reduce the risk of strangers identifying you and finding personal details online.
“If you’re part of a running club or event, double-check your settings to ensure your participation isn’t visible to unknown users,” advises Nottebaum.
4. Limit Third-Party Integrations
Many fitness apps sync with other platforms, such as social media and wearable devices. While this can enhance your training experience, it can also expose additional data.
“Limiting third-party connections helps you control where your data goes. The fewer platforms that have access to your running history, the better.”
Review which third-party apps have access to your data and disable unnecessary connections.
5. Be Cautious with Social Features
Strava and similar apps encourage social engagement, allowing users to comment, give “kudos,” and join local running challenges. However, interacting with unknown users can pose risks.
“Be selective with follow requests and avoid sharing real-time activity in public groups. While running is a community-driven sport, safety should always come first.”
If you participate in virtual races or community runs, double-check that your data remains private.
Running apps like Strava are excellent tools for motivation and performance tracking, but staying mindful of privacy settings and data security is crucial. By following these simple yet effective tips, runners can enjoy their training while minimizing potential risks.
“As a runner, your focus should be on achieving your goals, not worrying about digital safety. Taking a few small steps to secure your data can make a world of difference.”
Apps, just like its users, should understand the importance of running safely both online and offline. Whether you’re training for a marathon or simply enjoy casual runs, taking precautions ensures that your fitness journey remains enjoyable and secure. Stay smart, stay safe, and keep running strong!
