Access from the dark web is a cloud concern for almost a third of IT leaders in Ireland

Auxilion today announces the findings of its new cloud study – carried out by Censuswide and involving more than 200 IT decision makers in large enterprises across Ireland – which found that access from the dark web is a concern for almost a third (32%) of IT leaders in enterprises across Ireland.

The research revealed what IT leaders view as the security risks associated with cloud computing, with the top five being ransomware/malware (33%), data loss/theft (33%), access from the dark web (32%), account hijacking (31%), and phishing/social engineering attacks (29%).

Over a quarter (27%) see lack of staff awareness as a cybersecurity risk associated with cloud computing and a similar proportion (26%) cited human error. Some 23% also said malicious insiders.

The study revealed that configuring cloud properly and securely is proving to be a challenge for 40% of enterprises, with almost half (47%) of respondents admitting that IT security risks are a main concern around cloud adoption and management. Furthermore, some 29% said they have limited or no visibility of their workloads in the cloud.

On the other hand, more than a quarter (27%) of IT leaders say they are using cloud computing to enhance their organisation’s security standing. Moreover, some 24% have documented workflows so cloud security incidents are responded to consistently and a similar proportion (22%) have a standardised and automated incident response strategy in place for same.

However, in-house skills do appear to be a weak spot with less than a fifth (18%) of enterprises having experienced individuals in their team who know what to do in terms of cloud security incidents and one in ten (11%) outsourcing this part of their IT as they lack the in-house skills.

In keeping with this, the study found that 31% of IT leaders are concerned about the lack of in-house skills when it comes to the adoption and management of cloud computing, with almost half identifying cloud and cybersecurity as the two areas where in-house staff most need to be upskilled (48% respectively).

Donal Sullivan, Chief Technology Officer, Auxilion, said: “Cloud has the potential to transform how a business operates, while also benefiting productivity, security and growth. However, the IT foundations and skills need to be in place for organisations to realise and capitalise on the potential of cloud. If they are not, businesses will lose out on the value of cloud and also leave themselves open to risk.

“The threat landscape is more sophisticated and relentless than ever, with attacks coming from various directions and through different channels. Combined with a hybrid workforce, companies need to ensure their IT infrastructure and strategy is resilient.

“For some, that means establishing a more coherent cloud security incident response strategy. For others, it means outsourcing to an expert partner. Companies must therefore identify not only the cloud infrastructure and approach that works for them but also any skills gaps or additional solutions they need. In turn, they can make a success of – and drive success with – cloud.”

Can tech help tighten supply chains and boost project efficiency?

The construction sector’s supply chains remain under extreme pressure. Despite the worst effects of the pandemic now slowly subsiding, other factors, such as labour shortages and inflation, are likely to remain amplified. Delays can seriously impact a contractor’s balance sheet if not accounted for. Simon Herod from EstimateOne digs deeper…

Even pre-COVID, the intricacies of the supply chain often gave rise to inefficiencies and delays, ultimately hindering construction projects’ progress. Now, with labour shortages and rising inflation, the industry must turn to digital technology to help them centralise and reshape their supply chains. While these problems may appear to be ‘on-site’ issues, steps taken by the estimating and procurement teams is the first step towards alleviating risk.

Having engaged in daily conversations with estimators over the past six years, it is apparent that the workings of the industry’s supply chain are far from simple. The process of sending out project specifications, obtaining quotes, and aligning subcontractor services with the main project contractor can often result in a mixed-matched supply chain that’s confusing for everyone. Online tendering is part of the solution.

So, let’s get into the tips and tricks to ensure your supply chain is running like a well-oiled machine…

Casting a Wider Net

Due to insolvencies, no one’s subcontractor network looks like it did pre-pandemic, and as the availability of skilled labour continues to dwindle, main contractors must now look to expand their horizons and seek out new sources of supply beyond their usual go-to pool of subbies. For these working partnerships to succeed, seamless collaboration throughout the build is non-negotiable.

Digital tendering platforms, like EstimateOne, aim to create a buffer against construction delays and disruptions, ensuring smoother project execution. Empowering main contractors and subbies alike is the aim. With automated platforms, contractors can advertise job opportunities and extend invitations to potential subcontractors to submit quotes, cutting out the back and forth.

Constantly refreshing your network is important to keep a competitive edge. Broadening your pool of suppliers, main contractors can bolster their resilience and reduce their dependency on a limited set of subbies.

Automate, Centralise & Collaborate

In the face of challenges, the evolving landscape of the construction industry has compelled main contractors to reimagine their supply chain strategies all together. The persistent labour and material shortages have pushed contractors to evaluate and adopt alternative approaches to sourcing subcontractors. Even the smallest blip holds the potential to throw your supply chain into chaos; having a centralised digital platform could mitigate this risk.

In the hustle and bustle of the construction game, when it comes to tendering, it’s all about building connections, not drowning in a sea of paperwork. Trusting old-school methods for managing tenders can lead to missed chances and quotes that are way past their prime. Collaborative networks offered by these platforms make it easy to keep documents safe, work together seamlessly, and track quote progress in real-time. Your estimators won’t be wasting time sifting through quotes or splitting doc packages, but investigating the real deal – actual quotes.

Automation doesn’t always mean relying on a robot to get the job done. This automation equals faster processes that remove the repetitive tasks and let you get back to the build at hand. Automated addenda management can remove the risk of document superseding mistakes. Access to digital document audit trails provides a helpful overview of which subcontractor has which document and reduces the risk of document disputes.

The future supply chain

The rocky supply chain shows that it’s time the industry looks towards automation in order to diversify – the tendering process is no exception. When both parties do better, subbies win more work, and you have more accurate quotes, it’s simple! We aren’t calling for a complete tech-infused makeover, but instead start to embrace the streamlined processes that let you get back to fostering solid relationships. Because, in the end, our aim is all about bringing things together for enhanced teamwork and smooth builds.

Rise in the number of families planning to save in response to cost-of-living pressures

As cost-of-living pressures continue, savings rates appear to be making a steady recovery this year after savings and spending habits were impacted by COVID-19 and a sustained period of inflation.

According to Zurich’s annual Cost of Education survey, conducted by iReach this May and June, 56% of families in Ireland already have savings in place that have acted as a shield against the cost-of-living pressures. This figure is slightly up on 2022 (54%).

The good news is that plans to save are on the increase, with the highest levels seen since 2019. Pre-COVID, around 40% of families had committed to putting money aside for a rainy day, which had decreased to 32% by 2022, before climbing to 51 % this year.

Commenting on the findings, Jonathan Daly, Head of Life Retail Distribution and Propositions at Zurich Life Assurance plc said: “It is encouraging now to see the rise in the number of families planning to start saving to plan for the future. In terms of saving for your child’s education, planning ahead and opening a savings account when children are young will help you to manage education costs before they become a significant financial burden.”

The Cost of Education survey provides insights into how much parents are spending, what factors are influencing how much they save and how they plan to save for the cost of their children’s second and third level education.

The research has found that:

  • 56% of parents said they have family savings in place that are used to reduce the financial strain of inflation, up 2% on 2022.
  • More than half (51%) of parents now say they are more likely to create a family savings fund to protect against the impact of potential future inflation rises, a big increase of 19% from last year.
  • The majority (68%) of students studying at third level education currently live at home, up 10% compared with 2022.
  • Parents of third level students paid on average €3,931 on third level fees in this year’s survey.
  • The average annual cost of third level student accommodation was €10,077, while rented accommodation had an average annual cost of €5,179.
  • Parents estimated the total cost of secondary school education at €3,581.
  • 28% of parents have taken out a loan to help pay for their children’s secondary school costs.

Parents can use Zurich’s Cost of Secondary School and College Calculators to work out the estimated costs of sending their children to secondary school and college and to see how much they might need to save each month to meet these costs:

The calculators are also accessible via Digital Voice Assistants – see here for more: https://www.zurich.ie/blog/zurich-ireland-voice-services/

It’s All in the Gesture – DoorBird Presents the New Contact-Free Call Button Module

DoorBird launches another innovation: The new contact-free call button module enables doors to be opened without having to touch them. This technology was developed to promote safe, simple, and aseptic use, and not just in public areas. Ringing the doorbell by waving is the perfect solution for any building with a high level of foot traffic. Depending on the configuration, a gesture in front of the door intercom system can either ring the doorbell or open the door instantaneously.

A germ-free environment is critically important in public facilities such as hospitals, medical practices, and nursing homes to limit and prevent health risks for people. An IP video door station with a contact-free call button module can be useful in such places. Visitors can intuitively ring the doorbell by making a simple hand gesture and are also given direct visual feedback from the module.

The intelligent motion sensor detects both hand movements as well as a hand coming within 10 cm / 4 inch of the module. This also allows you to ring the doorbell even when holding a package in your hand, for instance. Like a classic DoorBird call button, the module performs actions that can be freely configured on all DoorBird door stations, such as sending out a call signal as a push notification, triggering a relay or HTTP(S) command, or starting a SIP call.

The contact-free call button module is compatible with DoorBird D21x series’ IP video door stations and is available to order now. The scope of delivery includes the sensor panel cover with information provided in German, English, Spanish, French, and Italian.

Unveiling the Thrills and Risks of Online Gambling Sites

The advent of the internet has transformed many aspects of our lives, including entertainment and leisure activities. One such transformation is the proliferation of online gambling sites, which have gained immense popularity over the years. These virtual platforms offer a wide array of casino games and betting opportunities that promise excitement, convenience, and the potential for big wins. However, they also come with inherent risks that need careful consideration. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the world of online gambling sites, exploring both the thrills and the potential downsides.

The Allure of Online Gambling

Online gambling sites have surged in popularity due to several compelling factors:

Convenience: The ability to access a variety of casino games and betting options from the comfort of your own home, or even on the go via mobile devices, is a significant draw for many users.

Variety of Games: These platforms like ยูฟ่าเบท provide an extensive range of games, from traditional casino classics like poker, blackjack, and roulette, to modern and innovative slot games, as well as sports and event betting.

Bonuses and Promotions: Online gambling sites often offer enticing bonuses and promotions to attract new players and retain existing ones. These can include free spins, deposit matches, and loyalty rewards.

Global Access: Players can interact with individuals from around the world, contributing to a diverse and dynamic gaming experience.

Anonymity: The online nature of these platforms allows for a degree of anonymity, which can be appealing for those who prefer to keep their gambling activities private.

Potential Risks and Drawbacks

While online gambling sites offer excitement and potential rewards, they also carry significant risks that players should be aware of:

Addiction: The accessibility and convenience of online gambling can lead to addictive behaviors. The lack of physical presence can make it easier for individuals to lose track of time and money spent.

Lack of Regulation: Not all online gambling sites are created equal. Some operate without proper licenses and regulations, which can lead to issues related to fairness, security, and payout reliability.

Financial Consequences: The promise of big wins can be alluring, but the reality is that most players will experience losses. Impulsive betting and chasing losses can result in severe financial strain.

Security Concerns: Cybersecurity is a critical concern when engaging in online activities involving money. Players must entrust their personal and financial information to these platforms, making them potential targets for cybercrime.

Underage Gambling: The digital nature of online gambling can make it easier for minors to access these platforms and engage in gambling activities illegally.

Responsible Gambling and Harm Mitigation

To ensure a positive and safe experience, players are encouraged to follow responsible gambling practices:

Set Limits: Establish a budget and time limit for your gambling activities. Stick to these limits, regardless of whether you’re winning or losing.

Know the Games: Understand the rules and odds of the games you’re playing. This knowledge can help you make informed decisions and manage your expectations.

Choose Reputable Sites: Prioritize licensed and regulated online gambling sites that have a track record of fairness, security, and reliable payouts.

Monitor Your Behavior: Be vigilant about your gambling habits. If you find yourself spending more time and money than you can afford, seek help and consider self-exclusion options.

Conclusion

Online gambling sites offer an enticing world of entertainment and potential rewards, but they also come with substantial risks that should not be ignored. Players must approach these platforms with caution, armed with knowledge about responsible gambling practices and the potential pitfalls. By doing so, they can enjoy the thrills of online gambling while safeguarding their financial and emotional well-being.

Tech Review – OpenRock Pro Open-Ear Air Conduction Sport Earbuds

Open-Ear bone and Air conduction earbuds/ headphones are now a thing these days and we are going through some amount of pairs to test which is a good thing so we can show you how these things work with hands on time with the products and not lazy stock image reviews so you get context. The OpenRock Open-Ear Air conduction earbuds have been on my ears some time now and as mentioned before there is a difference between bone and air conduction headphones and we are now seeing more of the air conduction earbuds hit the shelves.

Also mentioned before in some reviews you will not get to near your earbud or headphone quality here but this is certainly changing for the better and with these sport earbuds again I see a difference in the tech and enhanced over other models tested in the past, there is no app with the OpenRock but hopefully in time we will see one soon but the news is good more or less from here they couldn’t be simpler to operate either.

You get a pretty large case as seen in the video and some might call that a caveat it is still pocketable and you will know you have it at all times unlike some small earbud cases for example, the case is also super robust so the goods inside will be safe.

The Earbuds are also robust and solid and can be moved to get the perfect fit, these will not fall off once you adjust them to your requirement. As mentioned no app so some limitations.

You have no auto play or pause no multipoint connection, EQ and no wireless charging and after that the rest is there, you can use these individually so effectively doubling battery life for those who use one side only which people do and is a good feature to see here.

The controls are simple to use with one button each side to execute the commands which are fixed and you have access to your voice assistant too the button on each side is the perfect size and works right each time and that is all there is to it really. you can skip and reverse tracks, play and pause and higher and lower the volume and control calls.

Overall the sound is pretty good here and a decent audio experience to be had and you can also hear your surroundings too which is not a bad thing there is some leakage on maxed out volume but no lag latency no tinny sound or distorted either when maxed out. Check out the video review for more.
