Esri Ireland, the market leader in geographic information system (GIS) technology in Ireland, has teamed up with the digital utility services provider UDC to offer specialist consulting services for Esri Ireland’s utility sector. Through this partnership, gas, electricity, water and wastewater companies will be able to access enhanced support when implementing ArcGIS Utility Network, Esri’s next generation spatial information system for utility management.
“Several of Esri Ireland’s customers in the utility sector are planning to migrate to ArcGIS Utility Network or have already begun on this journey,” says Paul Synnott, Managing Director of Esri Ireland. “By collaborating with UDC, we are giving our customers easy access to utility sector specialists who can advise them about data migration and help them optimise the benefits they gain from their investment in Esri technology.”
Where appropriate, consultants from UDC will join Esri Ireland projects and work alongside Esri Ireland’s Professional Services Team to deliver agreed outcomes for utility customers. In particular, UDC will provide guidance on best practice data cleansing and data migration methods and advise customers on how to represent utility assets digitally. Utilities will also be able to take advantage of UDC’s proprietary auto-migration HEIDE tool, which helps accelerate data migration processes.
Esri Ireland and UDC have already worked together on a successful collaboration with Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) Networks. As part of a project team led by Esri Ireland, UDC carried out a Data Readiness Assessment to evaluate the utility’s data quality, highlighted data recommendations and prepared it for a full data migration. This allowed NIE Networks to quantify the time and resources it will need to migrate data to the new system.
UDC has been providing ArcGIS-based solutions and services for utilities in the USA and Canada for nearly twenty years. It is a Platinum Partner in the Esri Partner Network programme and holds Esri specialty certifications in gas and electric utilities services. For organisations that are migrating to ArcGIS Utility Network, it delivers services ranging from strategic roadmap guidance to data assessment and migration readiness planning, and full migration support.

A €19.6 million partnership project, which aims to be the stepping stone towards large scale wave energy commercialisation, has received formal go-ahead from the European Union.
WEDUSEA is a pioneering collaboration between 14 partners, spanning industry and academia from across the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Spain. It is co-ordinated by the Irish company OceanEnergy.
The project is co-funded by the EU Horizon Europe Programme and by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency.
In common with all other Horizon Europe projects, WEDUSEA has undergone a comprehensive independent review by EU appointed external experts following its initial project design period to ensure the technical designs and all plans, budgets and protocols are fully in place and approved.
The green light has now been received from the EU and the project can proceed to its next stage.
The WEDUSEA project will demonstrate a grid connected 1MW OE35 floating wave energy converter at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) wave energy test site at Billia Croo in Orkney, Scotland. A rigorous technical and environmental demonstration will happen over a two-year period in Atlantic wave conditions.
OceanEnergy has developed the OE35, which is the world’s largest capacity floating wave energy device. Floating on the ocean’s surface, the device incorporates a trapped air volume, with the lower part open to the sea. Wave pressures at the submerged opening cause the water to oscillate and drive the trapped air through a turbine to generate electricity. Electricity generated will be exported to the UK grid via EMEC’s subsea cables.
Prof Tony Lewis, Chief Technical Officer at OceanEnergy, says: “Wave energy is the world’s most valuable renewable resource with around 30TWh of potential annual production waiting to be harnessed. That’s almost ten times Europe’s annual electricity consumption. However, this potential has yet to be fully realised. The project will demonstrate that wave technology is on a cost reduction trajectory and will thus be a stepping stone to larger commercial array scale up and further industrialisation. We predict that the natural energy of the world’s oceans will one day supply much of the grid.”
The WEDUSEA project has three phases. The first phase is the initial design and build of a device suited to the ocean conditions at EMEC’s Billia Croo wave energy test site. This will be followed by the demonstration at the site, lasting two years. The final phase will be commercialisation and dissemination which sees the capitalisation and exploitation of the results.
Matthijs Soede from the European Commission said at the start of the project: “WEDUSEA is set to be a major catalyst for the wave energy industry, unlocking the full potential of this exciting renewable technology.
Prof Lars Johanning of University of Plymouth says: “The WEDUSEA partnership has worked hard to ensure that all detailed designs and planning are robust, to prove that the project is viable and that the project will be delivered within budget. Now we have received the green light from the EU, it’s all systems go!”
The wave converter build starts in the second half of 2024 and the demonstration at EMEC is expected to begin in June 2025.

1, You get to have some control over your future. When you take the reins of your own working life, you stop answering to somebody else and you answer only to yourself. That may sound like a selfish endeavor to some, but honestly, it’s one of the best things that you can do for yourself, especially if you are trying to strike out by yourself to do something good. 2. You get to work where you want, when you want, and how you want. Part of being more in control of your own future is being in control of the day-to-day business that you have. The work that produces your income is yours, since starting your own business can give you the flexibility and the freedom to work whenever and wherever you’d like. It’s liberating and it’s often not something everybody gets to feel.
3. Amount of flexibility. Needing more flexibility is a good reason why people start their business. Maybe you need to have more flexibility to care for your family members, or maybe you want to pursue other passions. Working for other people isn’t always the easiest thing to do. When you start a business, you get a chance to do it all.
4. You could make amazing money. Money is always the end game, but not usually the first thing people think of when they want to work their own business. Maybe there’s a problem that you want to solve because you’re frustrated that other businesses aren’t doing it. Maybe you know that you have an idea that could go global and you want to have that little bit of celebrity or fame that comes with it. Money is the option here, and it’s not about getting rich quick, but getting rich in the long term. If you approach it the right way, you can make a lot of money when you own your own business and you have a lot of control over how you use it and when you use it.
5. You have the opportunity to grab even more opportunities when you work for yourself. You have the chance to gain amazing opportunities that may not have come your way otherwise. 6. You get to open more doors. Because most businesses are conducted online these days, you get the chance to open the doors to a huge variety of online business models. From online service based businesses to e-commerce outlets, there are so many options for you that you’re going to be supported for choice. Many of those options can be started with a smaller amount of cash than you think. Because of the worldwide online connectivity, you also get the opportunity to recruit talented people from anywhere in the world, so you don’t have to be on your own if you don’t want to be.
7. It feels good. One of the things you have to consider with starting your own business is the personal fulfillment you’re going to get out of it. Having your own business gives you the chance to feel passionately connected to what you’re doing. And when you start your business, you get to decide whether you have a social impact or an environmental impact or any impact at all. You want people to love coming to work every day, and when you design your own business, you get to do it exactly how you want and when you want.
8. You are in control of the impact that you make. Making an impact at whether it’s for environmental or selfish reasons is something that you can do when you start your own business. You can choose where to invest your charitable giving and you can choose whether or not to be socially minded. Giving back is so important, and if you want to have a good reputation in your local environment, that’s exactly what you could do. The more money you make, the more impact you could have.
9. Create an environment that’s your own. What do you prefer your working environment to look like? If you’re working for somebody else right now, nobody’s going to ask you that question because they’re not interested in what you want. They’re interested in what your boss wants. When you work for yourself, you get to set the culture, the formality, and everything else that comes in your new organization. If you want a workplace that’s more casual, you can make it happen, and if you want formality, you can have that too. If you don’t want to have a workplace and you want to save your money on your overhead, that’s also something you can achieve.
10. You get to fix whatever problems you want to fix. Sometimes people start a business because they want to be able to address something that’s important to them. If that’s you, you’re in control!
