Vodafone becomes Ireland’s first JAM Card friendly mobile retailer in new partnership with NOW Group

Vodafone has announced a new partnership with JAM Card and NOW Group, becoming Ireland’s first JAM Card friendly mobile retailer. This partnership enables customers with hidden disabilities or communication barriers to tell staff in Vodafone 86 stores nationwide that they need extra time and understanding in a private and easy manner.

The JAM Card (Just A Minute) allows people with invisible disabilities to discreetly request patience during daily interactions—whether in stores, on public transport, or elsewhere. More than 1 in 5 potential consumers have a disability, and it is estimated that almost 1 in 5 people of working age has a disability.

As a JAM Card partner, Vodafone will provide tailored eLearning training for all retail teams, equipping staff with the skills required to support people with visible and invisible disabilities. Vodafone retail staff will be trained to recognise and respond to the JAM Card, enhancing customer service in 86 stores, making in-store experience less daunting and more efficient for shoppers with non-visible disabilities, whilst fostering a culture of understanding and neurodiversity across Vodafone.

Welcoming the partnership, Jenny Hayes, Head of Consumer Sales at Vodafone, said: “At Vodafone, we want to make sure no one is left behind. Over the coming weeks, we will work closely with our retail teams and JAM to make sure our staff are equipped with the correct training to recognise JAM Card users nationwide, providing them with support they need. Uplifting our ‘Inclusion for All in the Digital World’ initiative, this partnership is a meaningful step towards breaking down barriers, ensuring that everyone who enters a Vodafone store feels welcomed and supported.”

Aligning with Vodafone’s Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) policies, the partnership complements initiatives already in place, such as the retail stores’ sensory hours , which are from 9-11 am every Wednesday. All Vodafone retail stores will feature JAM Card signage to highlight this service, setting it apart from competitors who do not currently offer this support.

JAM has seen significant growth, with 123,000 JAM Card users and 10,000 JAM Card app users since it first launched in 2012. Elaine Carey has been appointed as CEO at Three Ireland

Three Ireland today announces that Elaine Carey has been appointed as CEO.

A vastly experienced senior telecommunications executive, Ms Carey will formally take up the role during Q2 of 2025.

Currently Chief Commercial Officer of Three Ireland and Three UK, she leads the products and propositions portfolio, overseeing award-winning customer care teams, as well as Three’s retail footprint and e-commerce business. Elaine’s remit also covers Three’s successful sponsorships of 3Arena and 3Olympia, as well as the company’s digital and brand marketing.

Robert Finnegan, the outgoing CEO of Three Ireland, is moving to take a new role in CK Hutchison Group where he will become Deputy Chairman of CK Hutchison Telecoms Group to assist in managing the company’s global telecoms interests.

Robert has been CEO of Three Ireland since the company’s launch in 2005 and in addition

to this role, became CEO of Three UK in April 2020. Robert’s contribution to the Irish telecommunications market has been substantial, having been at the helm from Three’s infancy in Ireland to the network now being Ireland’s largest telecommunications provider.

Google launches new supervision tools for parents

Google has announced new tools for parents to help manage their child’s devices with Google Family Link.

Family Link’s new design is more intuitive for parents to use and navigate. A new Screen Time tab consolidates all screen-time management tools in a single, easily accessible place. In addition to the app and device-specific usage summary and time limits, the Screen Time tab also makes it easier for parents to set and adjust Downtime and School time.

Google advised that parents will find managing their child’s account, privacy settings and content filters is now easier than ever on the Controls tab. They have streamlined key controls so parents have what they need right at their fingertips, including the ability to manage account data settings, approve app downloads and block specific websites.

Juggling multiple kids and their devices is also getting easier. Simply swipe between child profiles and manage devices from a single page, with more advanced settings just a tap away.

The School time feature was brought to the Fitbit ACE LTE and Samsung Galaxy Watch for Kids as a way to help minimise distractions on smartwatches for children during school hours. From next week, Google will roll out School time support for Android phones and tablets as well.

School time can help reduce distractions, by scheduling limited phone functionality and silenced notifications during school hours. If there is a holiday or planned day off, or even just planned lunches, parents can easily adjust the settings and set a “Break” to fit their children’s schedules.

Parents can choose the apps that are silenced and restricted, and learn which apps their child uses while in School time or outside of it. Google noted that there are times when certain apps are useful for studying, which is why parents can choose a set of allowed apps, and select which are allowed during School time or in other selected modes.

Galaxy Watch for Kids launched with lots of new features for kids and parents. In the coming months, Google will be bringing the ability for parents to approve contacts for kids to call and text to Android phones, too. Parents can add these contacts from Family Link directly to their child’s device and limit calls and texts to only those approved contacts. Children can also request to add new contacts to be approved by parents in Family Link.

WHOOP Study Unveils New Digital Biomarker for Menstrual Cycle Monitoring, Advancing Understanding of Female Physiology

WHOOP, the human performance company, has announced the findings of a new study that introduces a digital biomarker for menstrual cycle monitoring, providing much needed insight into female physiology. Published in Nature’s Digital Medicine journal, the research examines the cardiovascular changes that occur during the menstrual cycle, offering a non-invasive method for tracking reproductive health.
The study, which analysed over 45,000 menstrual cycles from more than 11,500 participants, highlights the under-researched nature of women’s health. Despite women’s health issues affecting half of the population, only 3% of medical research is focused on women’s health. This new research is one of the largest efforts to leverage wearable technology for understanding the menstrual cycle and its impact on overall health.
“This research is a huge step forward in how we understand women’s health. While it has long been understood that various health metrics fluctuate with the menstrual cycle, the extent of these fluctuations and their significance have not been fully understood,” said Will Ahmed, CEO of WHOOP”
This research was conducted using the wearable device, WHOOP, which continuously monitors users’ biometric data. In total, over 1.2 million days of data were analysed to uncover these insights. The researchers behind the study, led by Summer R. Jasinski, suggest that this method could serve as a reliable and accessible indicator of hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, offering a new approach for tracking reproductive health without the need for costly tests or invasive procedures.
The key finding of the study is the introduction of a metric called “cardiovascular amplitude,” which tracks fluctuations in resting heart rate (RHR) and heart rate variability (HRV) during the menstrual cycle. According to the study, these fluctuations follow a predictable pattern, with RHR reaching its lowest point and RMSSD peaking around day 5 of the cycle, and RHR reaching its highest point around day 26.

The study also found that factors such as age, BMI, and hormonal birth control use can affect these fluctuations, making this new digital biomarker useful for identifying cycle irregularities and reproductive health issues.

In addition to menstrual tracking, WHOOP understands these fluctuations also offers guidance on optimising physical activity during the cycle. Research shows that exercise can have significant benefits throughout the cycle, but the type and intensity of workouts may be better aligned with specific phases.

Despite poor Irish results, global trends show an increased awareness of the importance of sleep by younger generations. WHOOP data shows Generation Z (born between 1997-2012) leads in REM sleep globally, with an average of 21.54%. This is closely followed by Millennials (1981 – 1996) at 21.45%. Gen X members (1965-1980) averaged 19.9%, while Boomers (1955 –1964) trailed further behind with just 18.4%.

These findings suggest that younger generations are carrying the torch for good sleep quality, not just in Ireland, but across the globe. In contrast, older generations, while often consistent in their sleep schedules, may face greater challenges in achieving deep, restorative rest.

  • Stick to a Regular Sleep Schedule: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day helps regulate your body’s internal clock, improving the quality of your sleep.
  • Create an Ideal Sleep Environment: Ensure your bedroom is conducive to sleep by keeping it dark, quiet, and cool. Using blackout curtains, eye masks, earplugs, and maintaining a comfortable mattress and pillow can contribute to more restful sleep.
  • Establish a Bedtime Routine: Engaging in relaxing activities before bed, such as reading, practicing deep breathing, or taking a warm bath, can signal to your body that it’s time to wind down, helping you fall asleep more easily.
  • Reduce Screen Time in the Evening: Limiting exposure to screens in the evening reduces blue light exposure, which can disrupt melatonin production and interfere with sleep. Aim to avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime.
  • Monitor Caffeine and Alcohol Consumption: Drinking caffeine in the afternoon can negatively affect sleep quality, and alcohol is often reported to disrupt sleep patterns. Limiting these substances, especially in the hours before bed, can enhance your sleep.
