Seven in ten don’t trust social media companies to protect them from fraud

Seven in ten social media users do not trust social media companies to protect them from fraud and nearly three-quarters (73%) distrust the ads they see on these platforms. Research commissioned by Bank of Ireland for its latest fraud awareness campaign also reveals that 91% believe social media firms should be banned from profiting off fraudulent ads, while 90% say that financial service advertisers on social media should be required to prove their legitimacy.

Bank of Ireland is also issuing a warning about ‘pump and dump’ WhatsApp investment scams. Fraudsters lure victims via fake social media ads to join an investment WhatsApp group. Posing as a financial investment expert, the fraudster then spreads misleading information to group members about particular companies/stocks. Group members then buy the stock, the price is pumped up due to the increased demand and when the price peaks, the scammers sell (dump) their holdings at a profit, and disappear.

Bank of Ireland fraud research (conducted by Red C, August 2025) reveals:

  • 83% of consumers believe that fraud is a big problem in society today
  • 76% say that the risk of fraud scams makes them wary when they shop online
  • 69% of social media users don’t trust social media companies to protect users from fraud
  • 73% of those who use social media now don’t trust adverts on social media
  • 86% of those seeing fraudulent content on social media platforms saw it on Meta platforms
  • 91% feel social media companies shouldn’t be allowed generate revenue from fraudsters placing ads on their platforms
  • 90% feel that companies that advertise financial services on social media platforms should have to prove that the ads are genuine and the company is registered with the Central Bank of Ireland

Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud, Bank of Ireland said“Social media platforms have become a lucrative hunting ground for fraudsters and consumers are paying the price while technology giants gain revenue. As we launch our new fraud awareness campaign highlighting scams originating via social media, a new spate of ‘pump and dump’ investment fraud is spreading fast, mainly using WhatsApp.

‘With results from the Latest REC C survey, seven in ten consumers now distrusting social media companies to shield them from fraud, and over 90% demanding an end to platforms profiting from scam ads, the message is clear – the public wants protection. It’s time for increased accountability, not just algorithms’

Bank of Ireland’s new fraud awareness campaign launches with the theme ‘Not all social is social’, highlighting the threat of fraud originating via social media platforms. The Bank’s consumer and business fraud education campaign for 2025 focuses on key fraud themes: Investment scams, CEO fraud, invoice redirection, smishing and fake online purchases.  The digitally-led media campaign provides actionable advice from Bank of Ireland’s fraud prevention experts and international cyberpsychologist, Professor Mary Aiken, to protect customers’ financial wellbeing.

Through extensive public affairs and PR activity, the Bank has been campaigning for a change in legislation to better protect consumers from fraud originating on social media channels.

Professor Mary Aiken said: “Fraud online is now an industrialised, platform-enabled phenomenon. Scammers leverage the same targeting and engagement tools legitimate advertisers use; the difference is that families and businesses bear the cost.

“Bank of Ireland’s findings, which show that seven in ten users distrust platform protection and over 90% want an end to profits from scam ads, reveal an overwhelming public appetite for reform. ‘Not all social is social’, much of it is commercial, algorithmic and adversarial. The solution is safety by design, verifying financial advertisers, building friction and warnings into investment journeys, and enforcing clear accountability when systems enable harm. If platforms can target us to buy, they can target protections to keep us safe.”

Anyone who suspects they have been a victim of fraud should contact their bank immediately so that the bank can try to stop the fraud and try to recover funds. Bank of Ireland customers can call the Fraud Team 24/7 on the Freephone line 1800 946 764.

ITU report details USD 2.6-2.8 trillion cost to connect everyone meaningfully by 2030

Achieving universal, meaningful Internet connectivity by 2030 could require an investment of USD 2.6 trillion to USD 2.8 trillion at current prices, according to the Connecting Humanity Action Blueprint released today by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) – the UN agency for digital technologies – and the Communications, Space & Technology Commission (CST) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The report outlines the challenges, projected costs, and collaborative strategies needed to make sure everyone, everywhere, can use the Internet, including the estimated one-third of humanity currently offline.

The largest investment component — USD 1.5 trillion to USD 1.7 trillion — is required for hard infrastructure, alongside substantial funding for human and institutional capacity, mainly in developing countries.

“Digital connectivity means creating opportunities for education, jobs, and access to essential services that can transform lives and communities,” said ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. “While significant resources are needed to meaningfully connect everyone, these are investments that will contribute to a prosperous digital future for all.”

The challenge of connecting billions

ITU estimates that 2.6 billion people are still excluded from the digital world, with connectivity closely linked to levels of socio-economic development. In 2024, an estimated 93 per cent of the population in high-income countries was using the Internet, compared to just 27 per cent in low-income countries.

The new report on achieving universal meaningful connectivity builds on ITU’s original 2020 Connecting Humanity study, published under the direction of the G20 during the presidency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, by identifying critical gaps with the anticipated costs for addressing them.

“The world needs between USD 2.6 trillion and USD 2.8 trillion to connect humanity by 2030. This figure is nearly five times higher than the last assessment conducted in 2020 in partnership with ITU during the Saudi chairmanship of the G20,” said H.E. Eng. Haytham AlOhali, Acting Governor of CST. “Such a dramatic increase underscores the urgency for international cooperation, collective investment, and the sharing of expertise if we are to achieve the vision of universal, meaningful connectivity for all.”

Key costs highlighted in the report include:

  1. Digital infrastructure – USD 1.5 trillion to USD 1.7 trillion: Expanding broadband networks to underserved populations represents the single largest cost. The report estimates the costs of deploying fibre networks in and around urban areas, 4G fixed wireless in rural regions, and satellites in the most remote locations.
  2. Affordability – USD 983 billion: Reducing the cost of smartphones and broadband services — both fixed and mobile — is vital so that individuals and households worldwide, particularly in lower-income regions, can afford to connect and stay online.
  3. Digital skills – USD 152 billion: Connectivity alone is not enough — people must have the skills to use the Internet effectively. Investments to fund large-scale digital literacy initiatives can empower individuals to access online education, secure better jobs, and actively participate in a digitally-driven society.
  4. Policy and regulation – USD 600 million: Modernizing regulations and creating predictable policy environments worldwide are essential to unlock efficiencies and promote innovation. While this represents the smallest cost component, it holds back digital transformation and sustains the other gaps. The impact of closing it would be massive.

Public-private collaboration needed

As the Connecting Humanity Action Blueprint highlights, global progress on connectivity has been uneven, with the world’s 46 least-developed countries lagging significantly due to financing barriers, limited technical expertise, and unreliable infrastructure.

To address these challenges, ITU calls for innovative business approaches and renewed collaboration between governments, the tech industry, development finance institutions, and civil society, to close current divides and prevent future ones, particularly in fields like artificial intelligence (AI).

The report concludes with recommendations to accelerate digital inclusion worldwide, including using schools as gateways to Internet access, investing in energy infrastructure in Africa, and enhancing data collection at the sub-national level.

JMGO PicoPlay 1080P HD Portable Projector Review

The JMGO PicoPlay is an innovative, portable projector that stands out in the mini-projector market. It’s designed to be more than just a projector; it’s a 3-in-1 entertainment hub that combines a Full  1080P HD projector, a Bluetooth speaker, and a dynamic ambient light. The device is roughly the size of a travel mug, making it incredibly easy to carry in a backpack or even a large pocket and it is also a powerbank but needs a mains plug

Design and Portability

The PicoPlay’s most striking feature is its unique canister-like design with an 88° rotating gimbal and something I have not seen before. This clever design allows you to easily project images from a wall to the ceiling with minimal effort. It weighs just over 2 pounds, and while it doesn’t have a built-in battery, it can be powered by a 65W Type-C power bank (or an optional stand with a battery) for true portability.

Picture Quality and Performance

For its small size, the PicoPlay delivers surprisingly good picture quality. It features a native 1080p Full HD resolution and a brightness of 400 ISO lumens (the PicoPlay+ model has 450 ISO lumens). While this is bright enough for well-lit rooms, it performs well in dim or dark environments, producing a sharp and colorful image up to around 50-60 diagonal inches. The projector also supports HDR10 and covers a wide color gamut (124% of Rec. 709), which helps make colors pop. The Flexismart system is a major highlight, offering automatic autofocus, keystone correction, and screen alignment, which simplifies the setup process to just a few seconds. The manual keystone correction feature is very fast compared to others here. The remote control has tactile clicky responsive buttons.

Smart Features and Usability

One of the PicoPlay’s biggest selling points is the integration of Google TV. This means you have access to a vast library of streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime Video right out of the box, with dedicated shortcuts on the remote. The projector also features a special Vertical Play mode, which is optimized for content from platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, a unique feature for a projector in this category. Additionally, the device can be used as a standalone 8-watt Bluetooth speaker, with a dynamic ambient light mode that can sync with music, turning it into a party hub.

Check out the full hands on review below

Features to note.

  • Compact and Portable Design: Easy to carry around with a travel bag included
  • Smart Features: Built-in Google TV for seamless streaming.
  • User-Friendly: The Flexismart system makes setup incredibly fast and simple.
  • Versatility: Doubles as a powerful Bluetooth speaker and ambient light.
  • Good Picture for its Size: 1080p resolution and HDR10 support up to 200 inches and reviewed on 120 inch pull down screen.

Conclusion

The JMGO PicoPlay is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a versatile and highly portable entertainment device. It’s ideal for movie nights in a dark room, backyard parties, or as a secondary display for gaming or presentations. While the lack of a built-in battery is a drawback for a device marketed as portable, its other features, like the Google TV integration and the clever rotating gimbal, make it a strong contender in the mini-projector space. It’s best suited for casual users who prioritize ease of use and smart functionality over maximum brightness and premium features.

Features

  • 3-in-1 Entertainment Hub: PicoPlay integrates a mini projector, immersive Bluetooth speaker, and dynamic ambient light (Requires Optical Filter) to instantly set the mood for movies, parties, or chill sessions.
  • Power Your Adventures: Connect to a 65W Type-C power bank or JMGO battery tripod (sold separately) for up to 3 hours of video or 7 hours of music on the go.
  • Immersive Visual Feast: Enjoy stunning visuals with 400 ISO Lumens brightness (PicoPlay: 400, PicoPlay+:450), 90% DCI-P3 color, and crisp 1080P resolution—up to a massive 200 inches.
  • Free Angles, Easy Control: Featuring an innovative 88° Rotating Gimbal with high-precision multiple control options and instant App access
  • with customizable Action Button for seamless operation and effortless interaction.

IMI launches 2025 National Leadership Conference to help Irish leaders drive growth and lead change

The Irish Management Institute (IMI) today announced the launch of the 2025 National Leadership Conference (NLC), taking place on Thursday, October 2nd at IMI’s Sandyford campus, which will bring together Ireland’s top business leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities of leading organisations in an era of heightened volatility and disruption.

This year’s NLC will focus on helping leaders move from insight to impact, develop key capabilities to navigate uncertainty, and position their organisations for long-term success. Former Editor-in-chief of the Economist, Bill Emmott, is to address the 2025 Irish Management Institute (IMI) National Leadership Conference on the critical role of leadership in driving transformation in an era of heightened volatility and disruption.

As the AI transformation accelerates, speakers will offer insights on how decision makers can successfully harness the power of the technology in their business; developing an organisational culture of innovation that embraces change; and cultivating and leading high-performance teams.

Keynote speakers at the event include Dómhnal Slattery, former CEO of Avolon, and Enda O’Coineen, Group CEO of the Business Post Group. Other speakers at the conference include Jennifer Melia, CEO of Enterprise Ireland, Alice Mansergh, CEO at Tourism Ireland, Joe Heneghan, CEO at Revolut Europe, and Emma Redmond, General Counsel & Head of OpenAI Ireland.

Commenting on the event launch, Shane O’Sullivan, CEO of the IMI, said: “Irish business leaders are navigating a highly complex environment, shaped by global volatility, a tightening domestic economy, and the accelerating pace of technological change. In this climate, it’s all too easy to become consumed by immediate pressures and lose sight of the bigger picture. But long-term success depends on leaders keeping their focus on future growth, building the capabilities to adapt, and seizing opportunities even in uncertain times.

“At IMI, we see that many leaders already have the insights— the real challenge lies in turning those insights into tangible impact. The National Leadership Conference is an important forum bringing together Ireland’s leadership community that can help to forge the capabilities for current and future success. IMI research shows that while most leaders are aware of the key challenges facing their organisation, many are finding it difficult to identify and put in place the capabilities and strategies to overcome these obstacles and drive growth.

“With an impressive line-up of national and international industry leaders, this year’s conference will give Ireland’s decision makers the tools to sharpen their capabilities, navigate uncertainty with confidence, and unlock future growth.”

Ideal for expressive portraits, the F1.2 aperture creates stunning depth and dimensional layering for a mesmerizing artistic impact.

F1.2 Large Aperture: Subject highlighting and mastery of light

The F1.2 ultra-large aperture delivers impeccable bokeh, facilitating more layered images through a shallow depth of field, rendering dreamy background blur, and highlighting subjects clearly. There is a smooth transition between in-focus and out-of-focus areas. The large aperture’s greater light intake allows faster shutter speeds and lower ISO, delivering refined, detail-rich images in both low-light and well-lit environments.

Precision optical design delivers stunning results

The precisely engineered optical design of 13 elements in 8 groups achieves peak aberration control and onion ring bokeh control even at 1.2 aperture, delivering consistent sharpness and clarity right across the frame – this is aided by Viltrox’s advanced HD nano coating. The ultra-large precision aspherical lens works together with an ED (extra-low dispersion) lens that effectively corrects axial chromatic aberration, delivering crisp, color-fringe-free images. The 3 HR (High-refractive) elements strike the perfect balance of portability and optical excellence, making this lens a natural fit for compact APS-C camera systems.

HyperVCM motor for quiet high-speed focusing

Viltrox’s patented HyperVCM motor provides faster and more precise focusing, while reducing vibration for smooth, silent performance – ideal for quickly capturing shots, and for fast-moving subjects. The silent operation and minimal focus breathing ensure a smooth and professional feel for video.

Tough and durable for all environmental conditions

The lens features high-grade weather-sealed construction with a high-strength forged aluminum alloy body. The matte black finish and protective coatings resist scratches, wear and lens contamination, while rubber seals keep out dust, splashes, and moisture – ensuring reliable performance, even in challenging outdoor environments.

JustTip partners with myPOS to streamline solutions for customers

Irish fintech startup JustTip has announced a strategic partnership with myPOS, the payments platform that powers seamless transactions across Europe. The collaboration integrates JustTip’s award-winning cashless tipping and service charge management technology directly into myPOS card terminals, delivering a powerful, fully compliant solution for the hospitality industry.

The integration allows customers to pay both their bill and a tip directly on a myPOS terminal, with payments routed to the merchant’s account, and tips automatically separated, processed, and distributed through JustTip’s transparent platform. Businesses gain access to real-time reporting, automated allocation, and written distribution policies that support compliance with Irish legislation.

In the first 12 weeks of the partnership, the collaboration, which is being rolled out across Europe, has processed more than €3 million in payments and €350,000 in tips, working with renowned clients including Marco Pierre White, Variety Jones, and Farmer Browns.

“Hospitality is under immense pressure to cut costs while keeping staff motivated and compliant with complex legislation,” said James Fahy, co-founder and CEO of JustTip. “By combining our technology with myPOS’s trusted payment infrastructure, we’re giving businesses a powerful, cost-saving solution that eliminates admin headaches, ensures transparency, and puts more money into staff’s pockets.”

The partnership also helps businesses reduce costs, eliminating the 11.15% PRSI charge on tips, while ensuring compliance with legislation in the UK and Ireland’s amended Payment of Wages (Tips and Gratuities) Act 2022, which requires employers to show complete transparency on all tips as well as provide a breakdown of electronic tips and their distribution.

Founded in 2021 by entrepreneurs James Fahy and Ciara Walsh, JustTip emerged in response to outdated tipping practices that lacked transparency for staff and employers. Today, it is trusted by more than 650 companies across Ireland and the UK and is scaling rapidly into new European markets, bringing its unique blend of cashless tipping and tax-efficient automation to more businesses.

“This partnership is a major milestone for JustTip,” added Fahy. “It shows the appetite across Europe for modern, transparent solutions that not only keep businesses compliant but also strengthen trust between employers, employees, and customers.”
