ccTLDs, GeoTLDs, and Internationalized Domain Names: What’s the Difference?

Top-level domain names – the bits of text at the end of web addresses, like .com – come in a plethora of types. There are generic TLDs, like .com and .net, which tend to be the most versatile, but there are also region-specific TLDs, like country-code TLDs (ccTLDs), geographic TLDs (GeoTLDs), and even internationalized domain names (IDNs).

On the face of it, these three terms may sound quite similar to one another, which can make it hard to tell them apart. This guide explores the key differences between ccTLDs, GeoTLDs, and IDNs, to help you identify each of them, understand their specific uses, and know when to use them in your own website creations.

An Intro to ccTLDs

ccTLDs are TLDs that are officially designated to different countries and territories around the world. Almost every country has its own ccTLD, with some popular examples being .cn for China, .fr for France, and .es for Spain.

If you have local business and your target area is only local then county domains will do better. For example, people having a business in Ireland can be benefited from .IE domain names.

In most cases, each country has established a local domain authority to regulate how its ccTLD can be used. Some of them are quite strict and only allow national citizens and businesses to use the ccTLD. Others are more liberal and basically let anyone from around the world use the ccTLD, if they want to.

Advantages and Use Cases

Originally, ccTLDs were designed for use in each specific country. .de, for example, was created so that German banks, organizations, and businesses could create their own websites for easy access to the German audience. That’s still an important use case for many ccTLDs today.

However, they’re also used in other ways and bring other advantages to the table. Since many ccTLDs are accessible to all, many brands use specific ccTLDs in their web addresses to create quirky, unusual, or innovative domain names, known as “domain hacks.”

Some domain names also lend themselves well to particular industries. The .ai ccTLD, for example, was originally designated for the nation of Anguilla, but has proven hugely popular with startups specializing in artificial intelligence. And, since there are so many ccTLDs, there are a variety of ways to play around with them.

An Intro to GeoTLDs

GeoTLDs are much like ccTLDs, but instead of being tied to countries or territories, they have different geographic links. You can find GeoTLDs for individual cities, for example, as well as provinces, states, and even continents like Africa and Asia.

Some examples of GeoTLDs include .london for the city of London, England, or .quebec, for the Canadian province of Quebec. There are many more available, plus hundreds of others that have been proposed but are not yet formally in operation.

Advantages and Use Cases

The big selling point with GeoTLDs is SEO (Search Engine Optimization). They’re amazing for local SEO, in particular. Imagine you’re an electrician working in a big city, for example New York. You could set up a website with the .nyc (New York City) GeoTLD in order to target your local audience.

Aside from that, these TLDs share many of the same use cases and benefits as ccTLDs. They can be used in domain hacks, for instance, and are beneficial for brands looking to spread their wings and attract audiences in other regions around the globe.

An Intro to IDNs

IDNs are quite different to ccTLDs and GeoTLDs. They’re domain names that feature letters, symbols, and characters beyond the Latin alphabet. For example, international domains may include Arabic letters or Japanese characters.

The idea behind IDNs is quite simple: while many countries around the world use the Latin alphabet, there are many other countries and languages that use alternative forms of writing, like the Cyrillic alphabet in Russia, the Greek alphabet in Greece, and Mandarin Chinese symbols in China. IDNs allow site builders in these countries to use the characters their audiences are familiar with.

Advantages and Use Cases

The big advantage provided by IDNs is that they open new opportunities in the many countries and populations that don’t use the Latin alphabet. This is particularly beneficial across Asian nations, but also applies in other parts of the world.

Businesses that want to target audiences in these places can use IDNs to create website addresses that feel more familiar and “local” to their target markets. Even international brands wishing to break into other markets, like China or Japan, could use IDNs to connect with their new audiences.

Summing Up: ccTLDs vs. GeoTLDs vs. IDNs

All in all, ccTLDs, GeoTLDs, and IDNs have several key points in common, but each one is its own distinct and separate entity. ccTLDs are arguably the most useful and versatile of the three, as they can be used worldwide for domain hacks and reaching audiences in dozens of different places. But GeoTLDs are steadily on the rise, with new options emerging all the time, and IDNs are likely to prove invaluable in certain regions in the years ahead.

World’s first virtual hospital – Cisco, University of Galway

Cisco, the worldwide leader in networking and security, has announced a joint initiative with the University of Galway and CÚRAM, SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices in Ireland, to create a research framework for the world’s first ‘Virtual Hospital’, serving patients with diverse conditions at every stage of their healthcare needs.

As part of the Cisco Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) programme, the initiative, which is already in pilot, is aligned to the ambitions of Ireland’s 10-year health and social care reform Sláintecare, to avoid unnecessary hospital admission and support patients at home.

Greater patient power

The objectives of this initiative, powered by Cisco technology, are to help increase access to services, convenience, and improve outcomes for patients. It will also seek to provide patients the ability to play an active role in their own recovery. The virtual platforms are designed to mean patients will not only be able to monitor their progress, but also provide patients direct access to educational materials, and the ability to participate in the decision-making process with their healthcare providers.

Unlike other initiatives around the world which deliver individual speciality virtual wards, this initiative brings together multiple clinical areas and stages of treatment to provide seamless care. These include community virtual care pathways for enhanced monitoring of chronic conditions such as COPD to enable admission avoidance. In addition, it is enabling virtual outpatient clinics for remote appointments with integrated multiparameter diagnostics.

Delivering virtual care

Cisco technologies, including networking, cybersecurity, Webex devices and application visibility solutions, are delivering mission critical digital infrastructure to power operations, connecting patients with their healthcare providers, wherever they may be, and ensuring reliable mobile data connectivity for seamless virtual care.

Underpinned by Cisco networking infrastructure, myPatientSpace and patientMpower mobile health apps provide the virtual hospital’s digital platform that helps patients track key health metrics and monitor symptoms from home. Clinician’s will connect to real-time dashboards that display information on a patient’s condition, alerting medical professionals to changes so they can detect deterioration early and deliver timely care.

Initial feedback from patients during the setup of the initiative has been highly positive with comments including: “you’re not having to travel to go to a consultant, and they can do it from their office as well… you have the GP on it, and another doctor too. For me, that’s a complete positive”; “all my information from the monitoring was there in front of me on the screen. I found it all very useful, and in some way better than in person.”

The University of Galway HIVE Lab has developed a range of digital care solutions for local patients in this groundbreaking study, enabled by Cisco technology such as Webex integrated Virtual Consultations. The initiative is using innovative AI technology such as dynamic appointments where patients with chronic diseases are automatically triaged to an appropriate outpatient clinic slot based on their clinical need (e.g. Blood Pressure, HbA1c values). In addition, the HIVE lab has developed smartphone-based software that uses AI enabled cameras to help monitor patients’ rehabilitation exercises to ensure that they are doing them in the way their physiotherapists prescribed to aid rapid recovery from operations.

Reduced workload and financial pressure

The virtual hospital research initiative is leading the way in tackling rising pressure on Ireland’s health system, particularly its funding and staffing needs. It will aim to prove a framework that could contribute to the lightening the workload of healthcare professionals thereby increasing staff retention, while minimising operational costs and optimising the use of healthcare resources.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK, early value assessment study on virtual ward platform technologies demonstrated their cost-effectiveness, with an estimated £872 (€1,020) saving per person compared with inpatient care and by £115 (€135) per person compared with care at home without a virtual ward.

To date, in the initial setup stage of the project in Ireland, approximately 350 ‘bed days’ have been saved by patients who have been supported at home via a COPD virtual care pathway as part of this project work.

Quotes:

Professor Derek O’Keeffe, Project Principal Investigator, Professor of Medical Device Technology at the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at University of Galway, said: “This research project offers an innovative virtual solution to a real global healthcare problem. It will explore new ways of providing care to our patients using next generation technology and new clinical pathways to improve health and economic outcomes”.

Brian Jordan, Country Digital Acceleration Lead, Cisco Ireland, said: “Digital technology is critical to the future of healthcare and is capable of extending care well beyond hospital walls, right into patients’ homes and in the heart of their local community. Cisco is proud to be supporting this ground-breaking 360° care delivery model that aims to streamline processes, alleviate staff workload, and reduce financial pressures on public healthcare services.”

Commenting on the significance of the initiative, CÚRAM Director, Professor Abhay Pandit, said: “This project is one of the largest industry collaborations our centre has supported to date. It is an excellent example of the impact that collaborations between CÚRAM and industry can have on local communities and society at wide.”

Reaching more patients

The initiative expects to support hundreds of patients across the Diabetes, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Heart Failure and Atrial Fibrillation virtual care pathways in the Galway region. With the development and rollout of virtual outpatient clinics this is expected to extend to thousands of patients next year.

Remote digital solutions

This latest project builds on other pilot digital healthcare studies supported by Cisco in remote parts of Ireland. Enabled by its CDA programme, this includes the Home Health project in Clare Island, home to an aging population of 160 residents and challenged by extreme weather conditions. Care solutions in the Home Health project include smart wearables to track vital signs; drones to fly in prescriptions; virtual reality headsets to deliver training for nurses; and a robotic dog to triage emergency health issues.

Almost a third of businesses in Ireland using unapproved AI tools daily

Datapac, Ireland’s leading ICT solutions and services provider, today announces the results of a new survey which explores the use of AI tools and applications within Irish-based organisations. The survey of IT decision-makers in Ireland found that a significant majority (84%) of businesses are already using AI tools in their day-to-day operations. However, nearly a third (30%) reported that employees within their organisations are independently sourcing and using unapproved AI tools.*

The independent survey, commissioned by Datapac and carried out by Censuswide, gathered insights from 200 IT decision-makers across various industries in the Republic of Ireland and reveals that individual employee interest in AI capabilities is outpacing organisations’ planned technology strategies.

The prevalence of unapproved AI usage is raising alarm amongst IT leaders whose organisations regularly use AI tools and applications. As these unapproved tools have not been subject to due diligence, many are concerned about the impact of such practices, with 39% highlighting worries over the quality and integrity of data produced. Additionally, more than a third (36%) of IT leaders expressed fears that such tools could disrupt established workflows by reducing operational efficiency, while 40% pointed to the lack of formal processes as a critical issue hindering consistent and reliable AI use.

Despite these challenges, AI adoption remains a top priority for Irish organisations, with 89% planning to invest in AI tools and applications over the next year. However, as businesses look to harness AI’s potential, the intersection of AI and cybersecurity is becoming increasingly significant. While nearly a quarter (23%) of IT decision-makers believe the internal use of unapproved AI tools poses security risks, a broader threat remains. Some 62% believe that AI will increase the volume of cybersecurity attacks over the next year, while 67% believe that it will heighten the severity of these attacks.

Kevin Hall, Senior Systems Engineer, Datapac: “AI represents one of the most exciting technological advancements in decades—arguably since the widespread adoption of the internet. It’s no surprise that forward-thinking innovators are experimenting with AI to improve efficiency and quality in their work. However, in the rush to capitalise on AI’s potential, organisations must not overlook best-practice due diligence. We strongly encourage businesses to adopt AI-powered tools from trusted, reputable providers—such as Microsoft Co-Pilot—that seamlessly integrate into existing technology ecosystems.

“Even with reputable providers, it’s vitally important that organisations are prepared for AI integration to help mitigate potential cybersecurity and compliance risks. If an organisation lacks the capacity to thoroughly assess their own performance, partnering with an expert IT provider can offer strategic support and guidance. As AI adoption accelerates, our survey underscores the importance of balancing innovation with robust governance. By addressing the risks associated with unapproved AI usage, Irish organisations can unlock the full potential of AI while safeguarding data integrity, operational efficiency, and cybersecurity.”

Understanding the Importance of Customer Journey Analysis

The customer journey is no longer just a sequence of touchpoints between a brand and its consumer; it is an intricate dance that defines the relationship between businesses and those they serve. Companies realize that understanding this journey is essential for fostering long-term loyalty and maximizing revenue. Consumers today might interact with a brand through various channels—social media, websites, customer service calls, email, and more—before purchasing. This complexity highlights businesses’ need to delve deeper into customer journey analysis.

By analyzing the journey, companies can pinpoint the various stages that impact customer behavior, predict potential drop-off points, and enhance the overall user experience. With advances in technology, the insight gained from customer data analytics can empower organizations to tailor their strategies, ensuring alignment with their audience’s needs and expectations.

Enhancing Customer Experience

Customer journey analysis provides invaluable insight into each consumer’s interaction with a brand. Understanding how customers navigate different stages allows companies to refine their service delivery. For instance, by identifying common pain points along the path, businesses can implement changes that alleviate these issues and make the journey smoother for future customers. A seamless experience encourages repeat business and potentially increases customer referrals.

Brands that focus on improving customer experiences often see increased engagement levels. According to a study by PwC, about 73% of consumers cite customer experience as an important factor in their purchasing decisions. Consequently, customer journey analysis is not merely beneficial; it has become essential for those wishing to stay competitive in today’s market.

Identifying Customer Pain Points

Analyzing the customer journey enables organizations to pinpoint where customers experience difficulties. A detailed examination often reveals bottlenecks, confusion, or dissatisfaction in the buying process that may otherwise go unnoticed. By recognizing these pain points, businesses can proactively rectify them, enhancing the overall shopping experience. Effective identification and resolution of these issues also help build trust and loyalty, turning occasional buyers into repeat customers.

When pain points are treated effectively, they improve customer satisfaction and boost conversion rates. Brands should utilize tools like Customer Journey Analytics software to gain insight into customer behavior at each step, allowing them to implement targeted improvements that resonate deeply with their audience. Regularly revisiting these insights ensures businesses stay adaptable to evolving customer needs and expectations.

Understanding Customer Behavior

Customer journey analysis illuminates consumers’ decision-making process. It provides insights into why certain actions lead to conversions while others culminate in abandonment. Decoding these behaviors enables businesses to tailor their strategies for maximum effectiveness; for instance, encouraging retargeting or offering incentives at critical moments can nudge customers decisively in the right direction.

Additionally, an understanding of behavioral patterns aids in developing personalized marketing campaigns. Recognizing the diverse motivations behind purchasing decisions allows for crafting messages that speak directly to the sentiments of varying consumer segments, enhancing engagement and creating opportunities for conversion.

Integrating Multichannel Strategies

Modern consumers engage with brands across multiple platforms, from social media to brick-and-mortar stores. Comprehensive customer journey analysis enables businesses to visualize these interactions, creating a cohesive multichannel strategy that resonates with consumers. Understanding which channels are most effective at various customer journey stages allows brands to optimize while allocating resources efficiently.

A cohesive strategy is crucial in maintaining consistent messaging across all platforms, which helps build consumer trust and reliability. Businesses create a unified brand voice that resonates with their audience by aligning communication efforts. Recognizing the interconnections between online and offline behavior allows companies to craft marketing approaches that address customer journeys. This holistic perspective ensures that every touchpoint contributes to a seamless and engaging consumer experience.

Building Customer Loyalty

Understanding the customer journey can significantly enhance customer loyalty. By delivering tailored experiences and improved service, businesses cultivate a sense of commitment from their clientele. When customers feel valued and understood, they are more likely to return. Promoting repeat business is crucial for sustainability. Consistent engagement through personalized communication and rewards programs further solidifies this bond, turning occasional shoppers into devoted patrons.

Additionally, happy customers become advocates for brands they trust. This word-of-mouth promotion is critically potent; studies indicate that about 77% of consumers are likely to buy from a brand if they follow referrals from friends or family. Organically building loyalty leads to long-term business growth, vastly surpassing the impact of traditional marketing tactics. By nurturing these relationships, companies can establish a loyal customer base that sustains their reputation and drives continuous success.

Increasing Conversion Rates

Analyzing the customer journey is a powerful tool for boosting conversion rates. Businesses can identify pain points and remove barriers that hinder purchases by closely examining how customers interact with a brand. Understanding where and why consumers drop off allows organizations to refine their processes, minimizing cart abandonment and other interruptions. Through targeted improvements, brands can create a seamless, engaging shopping experience that encourages customers to complete their transactions.

Additionally, optimizing key touchpoints enables companies to implement strategic incentives that attract and retain buyer interest. Limited-time offers personalized recommendations, and loyalty rewards can motivate hesitant shoppers to purchase. These enhancements make the buying process more intuitive and foster trust and satisfaction. The result is a well-designed purchasing funnel that consistently drives higher conversion rates and boosts overall sales performance.

Informed Decision Making

Data drawn from customer journey analysis equips decision-makers with substantial information that enhances overall business strategy. Key metrics derived from this analysis inform resource allocation, content publishing schedules, and even product development. Organizations that analyze customer feedback and preferences are better positioned to respond proactively to consumer needs.

This hands-on approach diminishes guesswork, leading to more effective tactics and measurable results. Brands are encouraged to continuously monitor their analytics, using iterative feedback to foster decisions that enhance value and stability.

Gaining a Competitive Advantage

Effective customer journey analysis provides organizations with an edge over their competitors. With a keen understanding of their customers, brands can differentiate themselves through superior service and tailored products. Insights from this analysis drive innovation and shape unique selling propositions that resonate deeply with targeted demographics.

Moreover, organizations that prioritize customer journey analysis typically report better customer satisfaction and retention rates. In an age where consumers are less forgiving of poor service, staying ahead of trends fosters continual growth and solidifies brand reputation.

Organizations that invest in understanding the customer journey are better equipped to meet evolving consumer needs and expectations. By prioritizing customer satisfaction and embracing a culture of continuous improvement, they enhance loyalty and foster innovation. This strategic focus positions businesses as industry leaders, ensuring sustainability and long-term success in competitive markets.

Give your captions new life

Expressive Captions, now available for Android phones, uses AI to automatically capture the intensity and emotion of how someone is speaking for any content with sound on your phone, even livestreams. When you’re watching live sports, texting, using social media or watching a video message, you’ll see things like a gasp at a juicy secret, cheers and applause for a big win and all caps when someone is really excited.

Enjoy cleaner audio

Reduce noise and distractions automatically with the new update to the Recorder app. Whether you’re using the app to record a lecture or important interview, distracting background noises can make audio playback hard to follow. You can now enable the “Clear voice” feature on Recorder to focus on speakers and reduce background noise.

Coimisiún na Meán publish revised Media Services Codes and Rules

Coimisiún na Meán has published revised Media Services Codes and Rules, completing the process of updating its regulations to implement changes under the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) and the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022. Under the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act, Coimisiún na Meán is empowered to develop codes and rules which apply to video-on-demand providers as well as television and radio broadcasters established in Ireland.

The AVMSD provides for minimum standards and obligations that video-on demand providers and television broadcasters must adhere to in a variety of areas, including child safety, the accessibility of their services, and the prohibition of content that incites hatred. The Online Safety and Media Regulation Act establishes the regulatory framework for these services and for radio broadcasters.

Aoife MacEvilly, Broadcasting and Video-on-Demand Commissioner at Coimisiún na Meán said: ‘’To ensure a thriving and safe media landscape for Ireland, it is crucial that the Codes and Rules which apply to broadcasters and now, for the first time, to video-on-demand service providers are up-to-date and in-line with EU regulations. We have been engaging with media service providers in recent months and following the conclusion of our public consultations, are happy to have published nine sets of Codes and Rules which are now in effect.’’

The nine regulations published include a new Audiovisual On-Demand Media Service Code and Rules, marking the first time that video-on-demand (VOD) services have been subject to formal regulatory oversight by Coimisiún na Meán. These new Codes and Rules were developed following a public consultation which concluded in August 2024.

The other existing Codes and Rules have undergone updates to comply with the AVMSD, and includes the Code of Programme Standards, the Access Rules for Television Broadcasters, and the General Commercial Communications Code. These Codes and Rules were updated following a public consultation which concluded in October 2024.

The new and revised Media Services Codes and Rules which have been published are:

In 2025, Coimisiún na Meán will commence the work required to update the Codes and Rules based on the feedback received as part of the consultation process which took place this year.
