DHL sorry we missed you card scam

The latest scam now doing the rounds is one you would not be familiar with so it is time to buckle up and be aware and take heed at what the scammers are now up to.

This time of year we usually see a raise in sms scams from courier companies and more in fact I got one from PTSB the other day in which they have yet to respond to and make people aware. well done lads.

Being involved in the logistic industry years now this is a new one rather than a text or email and it is a missed call card left in your letterbox with no name on it, the giveaway here is there is a QR code on the right with a website address to type in and it is as you guessed a scam and some will fall for it thinking they have a missed parcel. This is for the DHL on demand service.

This all goes down well now with the hold up at holyhead and people will be in panic mode now hoping they have not missed a parcel for themselves or a gift purchased for someone else.

Below is two samples of what you need to watch out for the one on the left is a legitimate card DHL will leave and the one the right is the dodgy one so be extra aware of what is coming through on your phone and in your letterbox and have a great Christmas. Don’t get scammed.

DHL have advised the following

Important Update from DHL  We’re aware of social media and WhatsApp messages circulating today about a potential DHL “Not Home” card scam involving our On Demand Delivery service. Here’s what you need to know: Our couriers in Ireland DO leave official cards (see example) when no one is home to accept a delivery. These cards include a QR code for rescheduling your delivery. Scanning this QR code should redirect you to:
Alternatively, typing DHL.ie/ondemand in your browser will direct you to the same link.
Safety Tip: If you’re directed to a different address or encounter cards that don’t match our sample, do not interact with them. Stay vigilant and thank you for trusting DHL!

RIP.ie charging €100 for death notices is a big deal for many

As we all now know that RIP.ie is now set to charge a 100 lids to get an ad on their site which gets millions of hits a month, we also know the Irish Times bought the family owned business and it was a matter of time they would introduce this and I seen it coming and now they are going to bastardise the site that most people loved, in fact it is a kind of social media for the elderly site keeping up with those who they once known especially those who left the country could look in and keep up to date with things back at home.

It is a simply made website and people will argue it costs to run which in fairness it will but unlike other platforms used today and like my own which costs to run an maintain each year with a few thousand views a day we do not have a paywall never will have one nor do we charge to review the tech products you see. It is not that much to maintain cost wise and not so much to charge the price they are now suggesting.

Not only this is you will notice we have no pop up banners or ads all over the shop interrupting the clean feed we provide and making the site look like the red tops online offerings but we have embedded ads which are part of the platforms deal and there is nothing we can do about that but again non intrusive or repetitive. We are not here to cash in full stop.

Death and funerals is a good business to be in so they say, the church and the priest even gets to cash in and we are fine with that  we are all going to die like it or not but with how things are now with the cost of living and so on this is just a kick in the bollix especially for the older generation who would more inclined to use the website.

OK it costs to place an ad on the radio or in the paper this is down to you though the service is there and only you decide if you want to cough up the money to use them but the freemium model always wins right?.

Yes it does and there is ways to get money from websites other than charge and that is via advertising which the new owners of RIP.ie could easily do and not be scabby or intrusive about it.

I have already seen the usual suspects cash in on this for clicks supporting the move which is no surprise at all and these people simply have no morals and from what I hear and have interest in myself now is others setting up a new free model which I would fully support and if I had the time I would do it on my own.

We all get old but we can’t bring everything with us when we die life is not just about money. Ultimately here I think this is kite flying and the cost will be less if they had any morals after all it is a business and not a charity however the fee they ask for now stinks and many see it as another cash grab like when they bought MyHome back in 2006. RIP was making a profit now the Irish Times just want to cash in.

Cybersecurity Challenges in Irish Online Gambling: Navigating a Complex Landscape

As the online gambling industry in Ireland continues to expand, so do the challenges associated with ensuring cybersecurity. This vibrant sector, fuelled by technological advancements and changing consumer preferences, faces a myriad of threats and regulatory hurdles aimed at safeguarding both operators and players. With the advent of new technologies and the increasing sophistication of cyber threats, the stakes have never been higher for ensuring robust cybersecurity measures are in place.

Evolving Regulatory Landscape

As mentioned earlier, online gambling in Ireland is popular, and the recent introduction of the Gambling Regulation Bill marks a significant shift in the country’s approach to the activity. This legislation emphasizes the importance of data protection and consumer safety, requiring operators to adapt swiftly to new cybersecurity requirements. In particular, the bill places a strong emphasis on the need for online gambling platforms to implement advanced security protocols to protect sensitive user data. This includes both personal information and financial transactions, which are prime targets for cybercriminals.

The regulatory landscape is further complicated by the need for compliance with international standards, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This European Union regulation requires companies to ensure the protection of personal data and privacy, adding an additional layer of complexity for online gambling operators in Ireland. Compliance is not just a legal obligation but also a critical component in maintaining consumer trust.

Cybersecurity Threats on the Rise

The online gambling sector is facing an increasing wave of cyber threats. Among the most common are Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which can cripple a website by overwhelming it with traffic. Account takeovers are another significant threat, where hackers gain access to user accounts, potentially leading to financial loss and identity theft. SQL injection attacks, which involve inserting malicious code into a database query, can also compromise user data.

The impact of these threats is not merely theoretical. Past data breaches in the sector have highlighted the severe repercussions for both operators and players. For operators, a breach can result in financial losses, legal liabilities, and reputational damage. For players, the consequences can be equally dire, undermining their trust in online platforms and deterring them from engaging with online gambling services in the future.

Harnessing Technological Innovations

To combat these threats, the industry is increasingly turning to technological innovations. The use of AI and blockchain technologies is being explored to enhance security measures. AI can help detect and respond to threats in real-time, offering a dynamic defence against cyber attacks. Blockchain technology offers numerous benefits; its decentralized and transparent nature ensures secure transaction records that are highly resistant to tampering. However, these technologies are not without their challenges. AI systems require large amounts of data to function effectively, raising concerns about privacy and data protection. Blockchain, while inherently secure, is not immune to vulnerabilities and requires careful implementation and management.

The Role of Player Protection Measures

Consumer protection regulations are at the forefront of the new gambling rules, requiring operators to implement measures against fraud and identity theft. This includes the secure handling of personal information and financial transactions. Operators are also required to install sophisticated monitoring systems that track player behaviour, identifying signs of problematic gambling. These systems must balance the need for user privacy with the need for intervention, ensuring that players are protected without infringing on their rights.

Industry Response and Future Outlook

The response from online gambling operators has been proactive. Many have invested in specialized IT teams and advanced security software to bolster their defences against cyber threats. Collaboration with cybersecurity firms is becoming increasingly common, facilitating the sharing of threat intelligence and best practices. These partnerships allow operators to stay ahead of emerging threats and ensure their platforms are secure.

Looking ahead, the future of cybersecurity in the Irish online gambling industry will likely be shaped by ongoing regulatory changes, technological advancements, and the evolving threat landscape. As global standards influence local practices, operators must remain vigilant and adaptable to maintain the trust and security of their users. The dynamic nature of the online gambling industry in Ireland challenges operators to not only comply with regulations but also stay ahead of cyber threats. As the sector grows, so too must the commitment to robust cybersecurity measures, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all involved.

In conclusion, the cybersecurity challenges faced by the Irish online gambling industry are multi-faceted and complex. They require a concerted effort from regulators, operators, and technology providers to ensure that the sector remains secure and trustworthy. As the industry continues to evolve, the focus must remain on protecting both operators and players from the ever-present threat of cybercrime.

1 in 2 Employees Report Improvements in Ethical Behaviour in Their Workplace

Almost one in every two employees (46pc) in Ireland continues to hold a positive view of improved workplace ethics since the COVID-19 pandemic, matching levels from 2021 and above the global average of 45pc. Among these, men (49pc) and young people (53pc) are more likely to report favourable ethical experiences within their organisations.

The seventh triennial Ethics at Work: 2024 International Survey of Employees was carried out by the Institute of IBE in conjunction with the Compliance Institute in Ireland and polled 12,000 employees in 16 countries over four continents. A total of 750 of those surveyed were in Ireland. In exploring current and future factors shaping employees’ perceptions of workplace ethics, it found that women are more likely to perceive a decline in ethical behaviour within their organisations since the pandemic, with one in ten (9pc) expressing this concern.

Michael Kavanagh, CEO of the Compliance Institute commented on the findings,

“Almost one in every two employees in Ireland believe ethical behaviour in their organisation has improved in the post-Covid period.

Less than one in ten workers (8pc) feel that ethical behaviour has worsened – and, while in an ideal world this figure would be nil, such a small percentage must still be regarded as positive overall.

The findings do pose some questions as to why some groups are more likely than others to have experienced a decline in ethical behaviour – namely 9pc of female employees and 11pc of workers in the younger age the 18 – 34 category”.

The Compliance Institute Ethics at Work survey explored and identified the top three concerns for the future: the unethical use of AI—such as discrimination or privacy breaches—AI replacing human jobs, and increased workplace surveillance and monitoring.

Top Employee Concerns: Results:
Misuse of AI for unethical behaviour 47%
AI replacing humans in the workplace 45%
Increased surveillance and monitoring in the workplace 42%

Respondents were also asked to rate their level of concern on the following workplace issues:

Compliance Institute highlights include:

  • The least concerning issue for employees is the reduction of interpersonal interactions due to the rise of hybrid working (36pc).
  • Between 30pc and 40pc of employees are not worried about any of these potential issues.
  • More men (47pc) than women (38pc) express concerns about heightened surveillance and monitoring of staff.
  • Among those worried about the misuse of AI for unethical purposes, one-quarter (24pc) report being ‘extremely concerned’ about its potential for malevolent behaviour, such as discrimination and privacy violations.

Mr Kavanagh continued,

“The rise of AI brings opportunities and challenges, and it’s clear that employees are acutely aware of its potential for misuse. With half of employees expressing concerns about AI being used unethically – such as privacy breaches or discrimination—there is a clear need for organisations to establish and implement robust ethical guidelines and governance around AI technologies. This is essential not only for protecting employee rights but also for making sure that technological advancements reflect the values and expectations of the workforce.

Another top concern among employees is the fear of AI replacing their jobs. This anxiety is understandable, as it is likely that AI will automate certain tasks and change job roles in many sectors—leading to uncertainty about job security for some workers. Employers can tackle these concerns by investing in upskilling and retraining programs that help staff adapt to new technologies and feel confident in their roles.

Above all, the findings show that open communication is crucial. Organisations should engage employees in discussions about the future of work and actively listen to their concerns. When employees feel heard, it builds trust and transparency in the workplace. Additionally, companies might consider setting up ethics committees or advisory boards that include employee representatives. This approach brings diverse perspectives into the decision-making process and shows a commitment to ethical practices. Ultimately, it’s about creating a future where technology enhances the employee experience instead of undermining it”.

What Opportunities Does Web3 Create for the Gaming Industry?

The journey of gaming began with basic simulations in the 1950s, but it was brands like Sony, Nintendo, and Sega that truly transformed the industry. What started with simple pixelated screens has now blossomed into the high-definition, fast-paced experiences we can’t get enough of today.

The online gaming world never stays the same, and Web3 is the newest kid on the block. It all kicked off with crypto payments in the early 2010s, and now blockchain is making its way into the fray. We saw the first signs of this with games like CryptoKitties, but it’s evolved past casual games.

The betting world is also embracing blockchain technology, with online casinos already benefiting from its secure, tamper-proof transactions. Although traditional, land-based casinos have yet to fully adopt these innovations, it’s only a matter of time before even your local casino integrates Web3 solutions to enhance player experience and transaction transparency.

This shift presents multiple benefits for both players and developers.  However, before seeing how Web3 has evolved the gaming sector, we first need to understand what it really is.

What is Web3?

Our modern-day internet wouldn’t exist without its earlier versions, Web1 and Web2, laying the foundation. Web1 was the “read-only web,” where computers and the people using them could only exchange basic information. Then came Web2 in the 2000s, making the internet far more interactive.

This was the era of platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, where everyone could share, post, and engage. However, as Web2 flourished, there were issues like privacy concerns, censorship, and centralization. That’s where Web3 steps in.

Web3 is the internet’s way of fixing its past mistakes. It is designed to be decentralized and put users back in control. It’s a whole new philosophy built on the foundation of blockchain and distributed ledgers that will change how we connect and share online.

How Web3 Will Evolve the Gaming Industry

With every passing day, Web3 unlocks new possibilities, paving the way for gaming to evolve in ways never thought of before.

  • Ownership of Digital Assets

Gamers have long aspired to truly own in-game objects. Thanks to Web3, this dream could very much come true.

With blockchain technology, items that you acquire in the game such as skins, characters, and weapons, can be tokenized into NFTs, allowing you to hold digital ownership of them.

This makes them tradeable, sellable, and even usable across various platforms. The Sandbox and Decentraland are leading the way in offering players this kind of digital ownership.

As of 2024, these virtual worlds have already seen millions of dollars in transactions, with players buying and selling land and assets as if they were physical property. You can actually make a profit by selling your rare items or land, this allows players to turn their hobby into a potentially lucrative venture.

  • Fairer Gameplay

Web3 gaming will also enhance fairness through smart contracts. These are self-executing contracts with terms predefined in the code.

In the past, players would complain about biased algorithms, cheating or unfair mechanics. Web3 came along to address these issues by using smart contracts to ensure every action within a game is transparent and can’t be tampered with.

For instance, Gods Unchained, a blockchain-based trading card game uses smart contracts to verify card ownership and ensure fair trades.

  • Monetizing Through Play-to-Earn Models

Web3 is shaking things up in the gaming world, making play-to-earn (P2E) games more than just a fun pastime. Now, gaming can put real money in your pocket. By completing challenges, topping leaderboards, or winning matches, you earn crypto or NFTs that hold real-world value.

Games like Axie Infinity are leading the charge. In this game, you collect, breed, and battle digital creatures called Axies, each a unique NFT. This means you truly own your in-game assets, no strings attached.

The game runs on two main tokens, Smooth Love Potion (used to breed Axies) and Axie Infinity Shards (AXS), both of which you can trade on crypto exchanges. The tokens are tradable on various crypto exchanges, translating in-game success into real-world gains.

  • New Business Models for Developers

The gaming economy today mostly relies on selling games and offering in-game purchases. But with Web3, a whole new world opens up, allowing players to invest directly in a game’s economy and even profit from its growth.

Developers now have the chance to create token-based systems where your participation helps shape the game’s future, and in return, you earn tokens that could skyrocket in value.

Take Illuvium, for example, built on the Ethereum blockchain, this game has its own token that fuels the entire ecosystem. Players can buy, sell, and trade these tokens, with the game’s profits partially going to those who hold or stake these tokens.

More to Come from Web3

Web3 gaming is still finding its footing. The technology is in its early days, with scalability, accessibility, and user experience still major hurdles. But remember, the internet has faced much bigger challenges and always found a way forward. Web3 is no different. With time, it’s sure to figure it out and make its impact.

These can be more than enough to persuade most people to start a new career in tech. To actually see them, though, you’ll need to actually break into the field.

This can seem quite complicated, especially considering the various parts of the tech industry you can get into. It doesn’t need to be overwhelming, though. Taking the right steps could be more than enough to help with this. They’ll end up helping you get into tech faster than you’d think.

Five of these steps can be worth focusing on.

Start a New Career in Tech: 5 Steps to Take

1. Take a Look at Your C.V.

One of the first steps you should take is to take a hard look at your C.V. It helps to give you a strong idea of what your skill set is and whether or not there’s anything you’ll need to learn going forward. Start off by focusing on any transferable skills and experience you could have already.

After that, it’s a matter of figuring out what areas you need to work in to break into the tech industry. It’ll help you more than you’d think.

It gives you a firm idea of what you need to do going forward. See it as a way to come up with a gameplan. You’ve no reason not to make this one of the first steps you take with your new career.

2. Consider Learning New Skills

There’s a decent chance you’ll need to learn some new skills before you can start a new career in tech. Taking a hard look at your C.V. helps you figure this out. This doesn’t always have to mean you have to go back to college full-time, though. Instead, you could learn more than a few of them online.

Most of these are more affordable than attending college full-time. You can even do them from the comfort of your own home.

The benefits of an online MBA are well-known, and you can fit this around your schedule. It’s worth looking into the most relevant courses for you and your new career. Once you’ve completed it, you’ll be in a better position to find a job you love. The process doesn’t even need to take too long.

3. Start Networking

You’ll already have a strong network of friends and other professionals in the career you’re already in. While these can help you in a specific career, they mightn’t be able to help you break into tech. It could be more than worth starting to network with professionals in the tech industry.

This can help you moving forward more than you’d think. They could give you advice, and even point you in the right direction for job opportunities. While this takes a little time, it’ll be more than worth it.

4. Build Mentoring Relationships

It’s always worth having a mentor in your career, as they can help you get started in it and grow into your career. When you’re trying to break into tech, this is especially recommended. It’s just a matter of finding someone who’s willing to mentor you when you’re starting out in tech.

Going with someone who’s been in the tech industry for years is recommended. They’ll have a wealth of advice they could give you.

While it could take some time and effort to find someone who’ll have the time to mentor you, it’s worth it. Make sure to follow their advice and ask plenty of questions when you’re with them. You’ve no reason not to.

5. Go to Career Fairs

You’ll eventually get to a point where you’ll start applying for jobs in the tech industry. That doesn’t always have to mean looking at jobs websites and hoping for the best. Going to career fairs with a lot of tech companies involved can be more than recommended. It offers more than a few benefits.

These will all make it more than worth it. You could end up having a better chance of getting a job with them.

You can actually engage with companies that are hiring and find out more about them. This gives you the chance to stand out from other potential applicants, and you could even get some advice while you’re at it. You’ve no reason not to go to a few of them while you’re applying for jobs.

Wrapping Up

Countless people consider changing careers, and it’s easy to see why so many of them do. They’re fed up with their current job, and they don’t see any potential career progression. You could end up in this position and want to make a change.

You’ll have plenty of other options ahead of you. You could want to start a new career in tech, and you’ll have more than a few reasons for this.

While this seems complicated, it doesn’t have to be. By following the right steps, it could be easier than you’d think. You’ll just have to be willing to put the time and effort into it. It’ll pay off dividends once you start your new career.
