Cybercrime makes headlines every day, and for a good reason: it’s no longer just something that happens to other people. Most of us either know someone who’s been hit by cybercrime – credit card fraud, perhaps, or ransomware, or having their email account hacked – or have been victims ourselves.
Sadly, it’s unlikely that cybercrime will slow down in the near future – the crooks are making far too much money to stop.
The rise of what’s called “Crimeware-as-a-Service” – a underground style of cloud computing where non-techie crooks let someone else run the IT side of their cyberattacks in return for a cut of the profits – has made cybercrime easy. Wannabe cybercrooks can now get started in the crimeware scene as easily as the rest of us can get online with a turnkey website, or run our own blog.
