Irish astronomer leads international team to make stellar discovery #Astronomy #Space

Irish Research Council Scholar and Astronomer at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Dr. Eamon O’Gorman led an international team of astronomers to make the most detailed image of the surface of a star (other than the sun) that has ever been created at radio wavelengths. The image was made using ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimetre Array), the world’s largest radio telescope.

The image was taken of Betelgeuse, the famous Red Supergiant located in the constellation Orion, and resulted in the discovery that the temperature in its inner atmosphere is not uniform. This could help explain how the atmosphere of these stars are heated, and how material from these stars is transported to the instellar medium.

Commenting on the discovery, Dr. Eamon O’Gorman said: ALMA now provides us with the capabilities to image surface features on nearby stars while also directly measuring the temperature of these features. We have known for decades that the visible surface of Betelgeuse is not uniform, but ALMA has now shown us in detail that the temperature in its inner atmosphere is also not uniform. It looks like these temperature fluctuations could be caused by magnetic fields, similar to what we see on the Sun, our nearest star.”

Also commenting on the image was Dr. Pierre Kervella, astronomer at the Paris Observatory and member of the team, “Located about 650 light years away, Betelgeuse is certainly not the closest star to our solar system, but its sheer size makes it an ideal target to image directly with ALMA. When we look at the night sky with our naked eyes, we see bright stars everywhere, but because they are so small, even the most powerful telescopes in the world struggle to image their surfaces. Our results show ALMA has the capability to image the surfaces of the largest stars in detail.

In terms of size, Betelgeuse is approximately 1,400 times larger than our Sun, and more than one billion times larger in terms of volume. As stars like Betelgeuse evolve, they expel an enormous amount of themselves back into the interstellar medium via stellar winds.  These winds contain crucial heavy elements that the stars have manufactured and are vital ingredients for the next generation of stars and planets.

The team’s results have recently been published in the journal ‘Astronomy & Astrophysics’.

#Oaxis brings its multi-functional InkCase i7 Plus E ink display case for iPhone 7 Plus to #Kickstarter

Oaxis, a leading consumer technology company, today announces the latest in its family of E-Ink cases, the InkCase i7 Plus for iPhone 7 Plus is now live on crowd funding platform Kickstarter. The multifaceted, scratch-resistant and now waterproof smart case merges the functionality of an e-reader with the convenience of a smartphone to bring users the world’s most advanced E Ink display for the iPhone 7 Plus.

Following on from the massive success of the InkCase i7, the i7 Plus now has the latest Carta 1.2 E Ink panel; the most advanced E Ink screen available in the industry. The contrast is vastly improved where white is brighter and black is darker, a huge improvement when compared to the E Ink Pearl used in most e-reader devices, including the Amazon Kindle. This super thin case adds only 4mm of thickness to the iPhone 7 Plus and is surprisingly light despite its smart capabilities.

The anti-glare screen absorbs the sun rays and reduces reflexion so you can now read a book on the beach! The screen area, now 5.2”, has also been increased by 40% from the original iPhone 7 and unlike other e-readers, has the added benefit of removing all distractions, including advertisements. Plus, with its “Read It Now” function, users can archive downloaded articles from mobile browsers and apps as well as multiple eBooks for the ultimate offline reading experience, without draining their iPhone’s battery.

Oaxis has listened and acted upon customer feedback on its previous models and now the InkCase i7 Plus has the ability to offer push news functions; a self-learning algorithm to display news for individual users based on their preferred genre. This news function is also automatically transferred to the InkCase so you no longer have to manually sync them. To the relief of all, the new case has the added benefit of eliminating distractions by automatically removing all ads and annoying links, images and texts.  To add a personal touch, users can further personalise their display wallpaper with a customisable template for live information centre widgets such as reminders, calendar, time or steps that day.

#VirginMedia has urged users to change router passwords.James Romer, EMEA at #SecureAuth advises..

Following the news today that Virgin Media has urged users to change their router (super hub) passwords over fear of being hacked, James Romer, Chief Security Architect – EMEA at SecureAuth Corporation has said the following.

The consumer association, Which? has called for the industry to improve basic security provisions, including requiring customers to create a unique password before use, two-factor authentication, and issuing regular software security update. This is not adequate. The way organisations are approaching authentication and securing credentials needs to be rethought for cyber security strategy and investment to have any shot at being successful. Simple two-factor authentication is no longer enough to safeguard against today’s attacks. Pushing forward, organisations are realising they need to adopt a new approach to prevent to misuse of stolen credentials that doesn’t just add an extra step to users authentication process, but instead provides effective protection while providing a good user experience. Modern approaches such as adaptive access control techniques and identity based detection work invisibly to the user but work to protect, detect, and ultimately remediate attacks essentially rendering stolen credentials useless.”
James Romer, Chief Security Architect – EMEA at SecureAuth Corporation…

Researchers selected to represent Ireland at meetings with forty-eight Nobel Laureates

Three young Irish-based researchers will meet with forty-eight Nobel Laureates this summer, when they travel to Lindau in Bavaria, Germany, to represent Ireland at the annual Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings.

Eoin McCarneyDr David McNulty and Jun Gao are three of four hundred young scientists who will attend the prestigious Nobel Laureate meetings in Lindau.  These meetings bring highly promising researchers from fifty-six countries together with Nobel Prize-winners in the fields of physiology, medicine, physics, chemistry and economic sciences.

Eoin McCarney – a postgraduate scholar based at Trinity College Dublin, working in the field of supramolecular and nano-chemistry; and David McNulty, a postdoctoral researcher in the Applied Nanoscience Group at University College Cork will both attend the 67th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting for the Natural Sciences, this year dedicated to the field of chemistry, and which runs from 25th – 30th June.

Later this summer, Jun Gao, a postgraduate student based at University College Cork will attend the 6th  Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetingdedicated to the field of economic sciences, from the 22nd – 26th August. Her research focuses on investigating the performance of the Chinese fund industry by looking at stock selection ability and market timing.

Following nomination by the Irish Research Council, the researchers went through a highly competitive multi-stage international application process, managed by the Lindau Nobel Meeting Foundation and were selected for the meetings based on the excellence of their respective track records.

This weekend will also mark the renewal of the Irish Research Council’s partnership with the Council and Foundation for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. The agreement facilitates Irish-based researchers exchanging knowledge and ideas with scientists from diverse generations, cultures and disciplines.

Commenting at a special award ceremony to mark the researchers’ achievements in going forward to the Lindau meetings, Mr Peter Brown, Interim Director of the Irish Research Council, said:

“We are delighted to have three outstanding young researchers attending Lindau this year to meet with forty-eight Nobel Prize-winners.

“These meetings are a fantastic opportunity for young researchers who have excelled in their research to network with some of the brightest minds in their fields.  It gives them an invaluable insight into some of the most important work happening in their areas of study and we are very proud to be able to support them on this journey.”

The President of Ireland, His Excellency, Michael D. Higgins, is patron of the Irish Research Council Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting Awards.
