Women’s Aid Ends Use of X

Women’s Aid, a national organisation working to prevent and address the impact of domestic violence and abuse including coercive control in Ireland, will no longer maintain a presence on the platform X from 8th January 2026.

The organisation has watched the increased levels of unchecked hate, misogyny, racism and anti-LGBTI+ content on the platform with growing unease and concern. The current scandal which has seen the creation and sharing of AI deepfakes, non-consensual intimate imagery, and production of child sexual abuse material by X’s own AI Grok, in breach of the platforms own guidelines and regulations is a tipping point.

This online violence against women and children – especially girls – has often devastating real life impacts and we no longer view it as appropriate to use such a platform to share our work.

This has not been an easy decision. Women’s Aid was an early user of social media, including Twitter/X since 2009. We have engaged with and informed our supporters of the prevalence and impact of domestic abuse, promote our frontline support services to those affected and push for positive social change.

We firmly believe that social media platforms have a crucial role to play in a healthy society, providing crucial townhall spaces for thoughtful, respectful, constructive and positive dialogue. By leaving we acknowledge that we are ceding the stage to the malign actors, and bots who will continue to overrun the space creating and spreading disinformation and other harmful content with effective impunity. However, as an organisation working to end violence against women and children, we balance the costs with any benefits to our continued engagement in this space and find we can no longer tolerate this situation.

While we have reduced leverage on this platform, we call on Governments and Regulators in both Ireland and at EU level to act swiftly and decisively to create effective accountability, legislation and regulation to ensure companies must have guardrails that protect truth, and prevent harm so that in the future any user can use X, and any online platform safely.

Status Pro X Earbuds Review

The Status Audio Pro X earbuds are the company’s latest flagship release, aimed squarely at listeners who prioritize exceptional audio quality above all else. Building on the foundation of their previous models (like the Between 3ANC), the Pro X delivers a technically impressive and immersive listening experience, not tested the previous models and can see no reason to need to do so after testing these out.

The single biggest selling point of the Pro X is its internal hardware: a hybrid triple-driver system in each earbud. This setup includes a large 12mm dynamic driver for powerful, controlled bass, and two Knowles balanced armature drivers dedicated to handling the mid-range and high frequencies.

  • Detail and Clarity: This multi-driver approach pays off immediately. The audio fidelity is fantastic, offering outstanding clarity and resolution. You can pick up nuances, instrumental separation, and vocal textures that often get lost in single-driver earbuds.
  • Tuning: Out of the box, the sound signature is dynamic and engaging, featuring deep, tight bass that doesn’t overwhelm the clear mids and crisp, detailed highs. For those who like to customize, the companion app offers an 8-band equalizer (EQ) and presets, including the well-regarded “Knowles Preferred” curve.
  • Hi-Res Audio: The inclusion of advanced Bluetooth codecs like LDAC (for Android users) and the future-proof LC3 means the Pro X can stream high-resolution audio (up to 24-bit/96 kHz), truly utilizing the capability of the triple drivers.

Status has refined the design, making the Pro X significantly smaller and lighter (about 20% smaller) than its predecessors.

  • Fit: They maintain the unique, stemmed, elliptical design but sit more snugly in the ear. While they no longer use the silicone “fitwings,” the ergonomic shape, combined with the multiple included eartips, ensures a secure and comfortable fit for most users, even during long listening sessions and always check for the best tips the ones on might not be the best for everyone.
  • Build: They are rated IP55 for water and dust resistance, making them durable enough for gym use and everyday weather.
  • Controls: The touch controls are reliable and responsive and no issues after some time using them like any other earbuds it is all about the thumb memory.

The Pro X offers hybrid Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) that is a massive improvement over previous Status models.

  • ANC Performance: The ANC is highly effective, especially at canceling out consistent low-frequency noises like airplane engines or office hums, reaching up to -52dB of reduction. It’s solid for daily commutes and focusing, overall decent especially in low noise enironments where you can get the best experience.
  • Transparency Mode: The ambient/transparency mode is functional but can sound a bit “artificial” compared to industry leaders.
  • Call Quality: Call clarity is excellent thanks to six beam-forming microphones and Voiceloom AI speech enhancement technology, which effectively suppresses background noise during calls.
  • Connectivity: Features like Multipoint connectivity (allowing simultaneous connection to two devices), Google Fast Pair, and Microsoft Swift Pair work flawlessly and are great for hybrid work. They use the latest Bluetooth 5.3 standard.
  • Battery Life: Status claims up to 8 hours of playback per charge, with 24 hours total from the case. This will vary per user and their setting as with any earbuds or headphones ANC does impede greatly on any.
  • Charging: The case supports both USB-C charging and wireless (Qi) charging ideal for those like me who has adopted this all over my house and office.

The Status Audio Pro X earbuds are designed for the audio enthusiast— A person who can tell the difference between a high-bitrate stream and a standard one. As having the biggest range of earbuds reviewed in Ireland I can confirm these are the dogs, you know what.

Dowdetector by Ookla: Largest Outages of 2025

In 2025, digital services proved both indispensable and fragile. This year’s largest outages were defined by platform-level disruptions, particularly across video, gaming, and communication platforms, that impacted millions of users. However, given how many individual platforms rely on the same few cloud providers and core systems, the role of centralized infrastructure also played a key role, demonstrating how a single point of failure can still cause disruption to cascade across multiple services simultaneously.

Downdetector® data from 2025 Ookla could analyze millions of user reports and identify the largest website and service outages of the year.

The World’s Biggest Outages of 2025

2025 saw a combination of major outages across gaming, streaming, and social media services, but none were more impactful than the cloud services outages that affected companies across the globe. These large-scale incidents underscored how failures in core infrastructure can ripple outward to millions of users. Here is a look at the largest global outages of 2025, according to Downdetector data.

In Europe:

  • PlayStation Network global issue topped the EU list with 1.7 million reports.
  • Snapchat saw the second-highest outage activity in the region with 989,559 reports submitted by users.
  • Vodafone’s UK-wide internet outage generated 833,211 reports.
  • WhatsApp caused significant disruption for its users with 621,763 reports.
  • Spotify’s outage recorded 468,334 reports, making it a major non-video streaming event.
  • Odido experienced, within 10 days, two separate outages that totaled 357,685 reports (June 15th) and 382,003 reports (June 25th).

AWS x F1 Launch AI-Powered Track Design Experience

Formula 1 and Global Partner AWS have announced the launch of a brand-new interactive digital experience, ‘Real-Time Race Track’, which allows fans to create, customise, and share their own F1 track design. As part of the experience, they can also enter a sweepstake for a chance to win a trip to the FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX 2026.

Using AI-powered analysis from Amazon Nova, ‘Real-Time Race Track’ enables fans to design an original, custom race track of any shape and length using their computer’s mouse or by tracing their finger on any touchscreen device.

Following the completion of the circuit, each turn and straight on the track is analysed by Amazon Nova, which produces key on-track metrics including top speed and projected lap time, as well as two viable race strategies, further evaluating the optimal pit timing, tyre recommendations and tactical adjustments for various weather scenarios. The detailed level of data across the experience offers fans an insight into the world of Formula 1 team strategists and creates an authentic strategic dimension to each custom circuit design.

After creating and submitting a track, fans can enter a sweepstake to win a trip to the FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX 2026, with the winner being selected at random, providing the opportunity to see first-hand a variety of strategies from the teams across the race weekend. The draw for the sweepstake will close on 16 July, 2025.

The latest experience builds upon the strategic Partnership between Formula 1 and AWS, which began in 2018. Over the past seven years, the collaboration has consistently delivered innovations that elevate the on-track competition, as well as the off-track experience for fans. With more than a million data points per second coming off the cars, the cornerstone of Formula 1’s partnership with AWS is the ability to extract valuable insights from all the data, and the ‘Real-Time Race Track’ experience applies that knowledge combined with AWS’s advanced analytics and artificial intelligence for the benefit of fans.

For more information on the ‘Real-Time Race Track’ experience, click here.

Jonny Haworth, Director of Commercial Partnerships, Formula 1 said:

“Our ongoing partnership with AWS continues to evolve and transform how fans interact with Formula 1. The ‘Real-Time Race Track’ experience exemplifies how we’re using cloud technology and AI to bring fans closer to the sport than ever before. As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we’re giving fans an inside look at the complexities and innovation of race strategy, using the same technology that helps to power our sport.”

Kristin Shaff, Global Director of Strategic Partnerships, AWS said:

“When we first began working with Formula 1, they presented us with a unique challenge – how to use telemetry data to further engage fans during live races. That vision has since materialized into 23 data-driven F1 Insights that appear during the broadcast to help fans better understand how teams devise strategies. With today’s launch of the Real-Time Race Track experience, we’re taking this approach to a new level of interactivity.  Now anyone can design their own circuit and instantly see how weather conditions, track configurations, pit timing, and tire selection influence performance.”

Former Google X tech controller raised €1.1m crowdfunding to speak at ‘speed-funding event’

Tony Foote, who co-founded Foxes Bow Whiskey with Alice Carroll is set to share his investment journey with other fresh businesses looking to grow at and event with Ireland’s top lenders at a speed-funding event next week/February 22.

The Show Me the Money event, at the Republic of Work in South Mall, Cork, being run by small business support platform and membership community Enterprise Nation, will help start-ups and small businesses get access to early-stage seed funding and growth investment.

The event is the penultimate speed-funding session to be held, with previous events in Dublin and Galway attracting hundreds of founders.  It will see small business owners hear from experts on a range of funding solutions from venture to angel investment, crowdfunding to retail banks.

Tony Foote spotted a gap in the market for a modern, contemporary, consumer-facing Irish whiskey brand while he was working as a controller at Google X – Google’s moonshot ‘factory’ in Silicon Valley.

Tony said: “I love whiskey, but whiskey wasn’t speaking to me. Every bottle was marketed based on traditional values, pictures of rolling hills and castles and a sea of black and green bottles. I felt there was an opportunity to give it a fresh perspective and reach a whole new audience.”

After the initial idea in 2020, Tony brought in childhood friend Alice, who was at the time living in Toronto and working for Pernod Ricard. The brand was initially bootstrapped by the founders, and they both left their high-flying jobs in 2021 to work on the business full-time.

In May 2022 they successfully crowdfunded €625,000 on Crowdcube, from a mixture of 400 Angel and individual investors.

Tony said: “Crowdfunding works really well for consumer brands, but the proposition has to be compelling enough to align with people’s ideas and mindset. Crowdfunding can become a massive marketing exercise that creates an army of unofficial brand ambassadors.

“But for anyone considering crowdfunding I would say it’s not a silver bullet –the first campaign was a full-time job for us both for three to four months. If you go in and you know the level of effort it takes, then crowdfunding becomes a great vehicle for investment. But be aware it’s non-stop.”

Very quickly, Foxes Bow Whiskey was stocked domestically in Musgraves and Tesco, and the pair were exporting to Germany, Italy and built valuable accounts in Northern Ireland. But then the opportunity quickly came for them to go into the US – and they had to go back to the funding drawing board.

Tony said: “It was 12 months ahead of schedule if I’m honest. It’s expensive to launch in the US, it’s competitive and money talks.”

They went back to Crowdcube and raised another €500,000, taking their total raised to €1.1m.

Foxes Bow is now stocked in Texas – where there is a population of 40m – including a listing in Texas’ largest liquor store chain – Spec’s Wine & Liquor.

He’s joined at the event by John Stapleton, who has co-founded food industry-challenger brands including New Covent Garden Soup Company and Little Dish.

He now shares his experience and invests and mentors via Redesdale Food & Beverage Fund, which recently invested in Cork-based supermarket-supplier platform start-up Kwayga.

Also speaking will be Evelyn Moynihan, CEO of Kilkenny Group and Nora Irwin, Cork-based founder of sustainable solid fragrance brand Arona.

Enterprise Nation’s quarterly Small Business Barometer found 74% of Irish businesses said they plan to access funding this year. Just over a third (37%) plan to borrow €10,000 or less with one in five (18%) planning to borrow up to €20,000 and another 11 per cent raising up to €30,000.

A fifth (22%) expect to use alternative lending, but the most popular option for investment is still the bank, with a quarter (24%) looking to Ireland’s banking sector for funds. Only seven per cent said they would crowdfund.

The events are part of Access to Finance, a broader nationwide initiative in partnership with SBCI, Sage, BPFI, AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB to support more businesses to improve financial management skills. Since its launch last year, it has already supported just under 2,000 businesses, with 40 per cent of those at the start-up stage.

The event is free, but booking is essential hhttps://www.enterprisenation.com/find-something/show-me-the-money-cork/

Funders available at the event include:

Mags Fullen, head of mortgages and business banking at the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), said: “BPFI and our member banks are delighted to support the ‘Show me the Money’ event Cork. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role in Irish society, accounting for around 60% of all employment in the economy. According to the CSO, most of these businesses, over 92%, are what we call micro enterprises, employing less than 10 people. It is absolutely vital that we support these small businesses, not only at the start-up phase but also to support them to grow and thrive, and it’s clear that access to appropriate funding plays an important role in this regard.

“Considering there are many different options available, we hope that this event will help business owners by providing a pathway to the information and support they need.”

Suzanne Sweeney, head of strategy, finance and operations at the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI), said: “Increasing access to finance, promoting sustainability and enabling small businesses to grow and prosper are our core objectives and define everything we do in the SBCI.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the Irish economy and play a vital role in job creation and innovation. However, they often face difficulties accessing financing due to limited collateral or high-interest rates. Our role is to provide dedicated financial support to Irish businesses by making it easier for them to get the finance they need to grow, innovate and prosper.

“Events, like ‘Show me the Money’ are vital to help businesses understand and demystify the wide range of fundings options available to them.”

Emma Jones, founder of Enterprise Nation, said: “What is the best kind of finance for your business and how do you go about accessing it? Our Show me the Money event in Cork will help busy founders work out exactly that by listening to experts from different areas of finance.

“There are a dazzling array of routes to investment – venture capital investors, angel investors, crowdfunding, banks and alternative lenders.  We’ve got them all in one room so that small businesses can ask questions and learn the best route for themselves.”

The Access to Finance programme continues through to Summer,  with an online library of eLearning materials on how small firms can access funding and grow.

Global voices unite for free speech following Musk’s commitment to challenge “draconian” Irish “hate speech” law

Influential voices from across three continents have united in condemnation of Ireland’s proposed far-reaching censorship bill – “The Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022”.

The bill purports to combat incitement to “hatred,” but offers no clear definition of what “hate” entails. Free speech experts have raised the alarm that the bill may pave the way for the criminal prosecution of a wide range of expression considered unfavorable by authorities.

The video, published by ADF International on 26th January, features Päivi Räsänen (Finnish parliamentarian) and Gabriel Quadri (Mexican congressman) – public figures prosecuted for their peaceful expression on X in their respective countries.

Räsänen has undergone almost 5 years of criminal proceedings in Finland on account of a Bible-verse tweet in 2019. Finnish state prosecution has appealed her case to the country’s supreme court, where, if admitted, ADF International would continue to support her legal defence. Quadri was convicted and forced by a Mexican court to post apologies twice a day for fifteen days on X for a series of eleven posts reflecting his beliefs about the biological reality of men and women. ADF International has appealed his case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

It’s incredibly important to exercise our free speech to defend against the degrading of this basic human right, which belongs to everyone. This Irish ‘hate speech’ bill targets free expression with criminal penalties. We must send a clear message to the Irish parliament that censorship has no role in a democratic society. Free speech is broadly protected in international law, and the government has an obligation to uphold this.

In other parts of the world where similar ‘hate speech’ legislation has been enforced, we have seen innocent people dragged through the courts for something as simple as a Bible-verse tweet, or affirming biological reality about men and women. Ireland should be a place where we can have important conversations about issues that matter to us – yes, even about controversial and sensitive topics. When these conversations are shut down, we all lose out,” said Lorcàn Price, Irish Barrister and Legal Counsel for ADF International, who has been providing members of the Irish parliament legal advice regarding the draft bill’s violations.

Challenged by Elon Musk

On 23rd January, in an “X Space” hosted by Ben Scallan of Gript Media, Ireland, Elon Musk committed to challenging the law in court should the legislation pass. Musk further committed to funding the legal fees of Irish citizens prosecuted under the bill.

The commitment to challenging state censorship follows an open letter addressed to Musk from ADF International in October signed by over 5,000 members of the public, including more than 50 recognised free speech advocates from across the world.

The letter asked Musk to:

“Designate funds to support legal action challenging state-sponsored censorship of views on X, broadening your offer regarding cases in the workplace;

Create an intake mechanism on X whereby individuals can apply for this support;

Host X Spaces to bring worldwide attention to censorship cases involving both governments and the workplace.”

Upon seeing Elon’s commitment to challenging state censorship in Ireland, signatories of the letter produced the video message to affirm their support for free speech in Ireland and across the world.

Far-Reaching Censorship

As currently drafted, the law would allow police to gain wide authority to search for materials that are “hateful,” rifling through text messages, emails, and personal effects to find prosecutable content – including in the form of jokes or memes.

On the issue of gender, the bill has a vague and open-ended series of “protected characteristics,” allowing for an infinite number of “gender identities” which could give the protection law to ill-defined identities as “two-spirit,” “non-binary,” “demi-girl” etc. The bill would potentially create a legal scenario where perceived offense against a non-exhaustive list of identities can be met with the full force of the law including possible custodial sentences. The bill also criminalises the possession and circulation of “hateful” materials, where the accused would be require to justify their possession of material which may incite “hate”.  It is currently before the upper house of the Irish parliament where further amendments will be debated.
