Tech Review – Skullcandy KILO Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

The Skullcandy KILO Wireless Bluetooth Speaker is one of their latest additions to their portfolio of tech which comes in several flavours being Black, Astro Dust Blue blaze and Light Grey and we have been testing the Black version which by all means is easy to maintain coming with an IPX7 rating which means it can be brought anywhere.

This speaker is durable and rugged and as mentioned can be used anywhere so it can be taken to the beach picnic  and even for a shower if you fancy doing so and it comes with a carabiner clip to make it even easier to hang somewhere.

You can connect two of these guys together if you want to make a statement but we have just the one but on its own it still makes a statement and plenty loud, there is no app to go along with it but this is common with speakers and I think users will be please for their money here considering the other benefits you get with it.

This is a decent sized speaker and not too big meaning it is portable and manageable too so can be placed in your travel bag or tech bag if like me to bring along and blast out the sounds. The controls are simple to use and tactile too and easy to get the commands right first go and we go through all this in the full video review below.

Tech Review – QDOS Galaxy S24 Ultra HYBRID CLEAR Case

Just picked up your  Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra? Check out the QDOS S24 Ultra Hybrid clear case now on offer from the company which will save you from an expensive drop which is something you do not want, the S24 Ultra is an expensive piece of kit and requires a case in my book no matter if you prefer to go naked as they say.

With this case you are kind of naked being a clear case which many will like, it has anti yellowing treatment and made with a flexible TPU frame with air cushioning which feels nice to hold in the hand and giving you additional grip and giving you peace of mind should you drop the phone you are in good hands.

All the keys work well with nice travel and no interruption in the ports either and allowing you to access the SPen when you need it.

You can still wirelessly charge your phone with this case too and we have tested on several chargers in the house and all work with no issues with any which is great.

There is a raised lip top and bottom and slightly lower on the sides meaning it can be placed face or back down as the camera array is also protected with a raised edge and again giving you some peace of mind.

Overall for the price the case is a worthy investment and best practice to save you from an expensive repair bill.

Tech Review – BACKBONE One Gen 2 mobile gaming controller

Gaming phones are rising in popularity but remains a niche market for many even though they are powerful phones they often come with caveats being targeted at gamers and generally expensive and you will not see many in retail here in Ireland anyway as in your typical mobile shop but you can find some sim free in other retail outlets, The BACKBONE Gen 2 mobile gaming controller brings gaming to mobile phones and makes it a better experience and costs much less than buying gaming phones and this is their latest on offer and there is some key differences between this and their last model.

The BACKBONE Gen 2 offers more new features and are as follows.

    • Both USB-C generations support iPhone 15 and USB-C (OTG) Android phones, enabling immersive game experiences.
      • There are a few key differences:
        • The 2nd generation controller supports a wider range of phones and compatible phone cases via swappable magnetic adapters and increased bridge extension
        • The 2nd generation controller D-pad and face buttons have been updated to ensure even more precise and responsive input

The product is well presented as seen below in the unboxing video and in partnership with Red Bull and the product itself is solid with nice tactile buttons and controls across the front of it with two buttons on each side up top namely called shoulder buttons.

They key difference here now you can use your iPhone with the Gen 2 model so for iPhone users it is most welcome as I use both Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 pro means it is a hand gaming accessory for me to use. Also tested on my Pixel 8 pro this is a great accessory to use given I have not much time for gaming in the first place but plan to change this it is a simple to set up device and you are good to go in a few minutes and you also need to download the app to get full use of the product.

Now we can play games on our phones without the likes of this but I have never been a fan of on screen controls and this changes the game here if you have never used such a product as it gives you the full hand controller experince you would find on your Xbox or PS5 for example and you can play the console and PC games you have with Backbone’s support for PS Remote Play, Xbox Remote Play, and Steam Link mobile apps.

BACKBONE One mobile gaming controller rear view Gen 2 – techbuzzireland

Overall if you are into mobile gaming and cant afford to splash out on a gaming phone that can be expensive this is an ideal bit of kit to have that works with many devices and now iPhones which are powerful phones and can handle games better than before.

Features

  • PLAY ANY CONTROLLER-SUPPORTED GAMES: Responsive analog triggers, tactile buttons, and clickable thumbsticks for the ultimate mobile gaming experience.
  • LOWEST LATENCY, PASS-THROUGH CHARGING & 3.5MM HEADSET JACK: Connects to your phone’s USB-C port for ultra-responsive gameplay. Charge and use your favorite headset while you play.
  • WORKS WITH MOST ANDROID PHONES AND IPHONE 15 SERIES: Compatible with most Android devices 10.0 and up as well as the new iPhone 15 series. For iPhone 14 Series and older, please see our Lightning version.

Tech Review – The Nokia Clarity Earbuds 2+ So Pink

The Nokia Clarity Earbuds 2+ So Pink is one of the latest on offer from the company and they also come in two other color variants being So Grey and So Purple so there is choice for everyone here and this also moves away from the traditional Black color we see to much of these days from all brands.

So being Pink these are for the ladies and the case they come in too is pretty solid and looks nice and fits in any pocket and the case seems really robust and will stand the test of time and it looks nice too with a small LED light up front a small button for pairing and USB-C port underneath with a nice solid closing lid and comes with wireless charging.

The earbuds themselves are a standard looking affair with small stem and they do look nice from the side and have a busy light so to speak that surrounds the outer shell which looks really nice when lit and overall the fit is tight giving a good seal and some passive noise isolation, there is ANC on board that can be turned off and is also decent at the price point.

The fit is solid and secure once the right tips are applied and they will not fall out even for the more energetic folk and can be easily used for runs or trips to the gym if required to.

The controls are great on these and have a large touch are making it easy to get the commands you put in so for me in my testing they worked really well not dishing out any unwarranted actions as this often happens with smaller sized earbuds even for me with big fingers they worked a treat as seen in the video review below.

On the control side you have call controls access to your voice assistant skip and reverse tracks and play and pause, there is no volume control on these which is odd and there is no app which hopefully will change over time but overall the basics are present.

Nokia Clarity Earbuds 2 + So Pink – techbuzzireland

The sound is pretty good all round given there is no app to change EQs and they are loud and punchy and well balanced is the best word to describe them, highs lows and mids all good and with my usual test run with all genres everything was great here it has to be said and calls included.

Overall for me these are easy to recommend with my favourite features including wireless charging, busy light and multipoint connection so for those on the go or working in an office environment they should be on your radar.

Features

Bluetooth: 5.2
Features: Active Noise Cancelling, Dual mic noise reduction with Qualcomm® cVc™ technology, Multipoint connectivity, In-call -light ring indicator
IPX4 sweat and splash resistant
USB connection: USB Type-C
Fast Pair and Low Latency for Gaming and Video
Wireless charging with up to 35h with ANC on

Peace of mind for UK parents: Anxious Mums and Dads support smartphone ownership for kids’ location safety

Smartphones play a vital role when it comes to safety, independence and convenience for pre and early teens according to UK parents, reveals new data today. According to the research, the majority of parents feel kids should have a phone by age 13, and 67% rank safety and security as the number one reason for providing their child with a mobile phone, far outpacing other factors such as educational needs, convenience, and social lives.

The new insights from family locator app and safety membership platform Life360 reveal that despite many spending their youth ‘playing out’ and pulling ‘all-nighters’ with pals, times are a-changing, and the same can’t be said for how they parent their own offspring. Two-thirds of UK parents with kids aged 13 and under describe themselves as more anxious than their parents were and often take more precautions than their parents did.

These UK parents with children aged 13 and under, commonly referred to as ‘Gen Alpha’, say their parents left them home alone (67%), let them travel to school without adult supervision (81%), and go out with friends unsupervised (67%) when they were children.

But now they are parents themselves, most are less likely to allow their own children to do unsupervised life activities before their teenage years (60%, 73%, and 59% for the situations outlined, respectively).

In the age of digitally native families, many are embracing technology as a means to provide peace of mind when it comes to modern-day parenting and feel reassured that it is easier to keep track of kids than it was when they were younger.

Of parents whose children have smartphones, an overwhelming majority seek reassurance by actively using location-sharing technology, and many agree it makes them significantly more likely to allow their children to do major activities like travel to and from school (86%) and go into town or to shopping centres with friends (86%) unsupervised. In terms of other areas of smartphone usage, just 30% were opposed to their child using social media.

In light of growing parental concerns, parenting expert Kirsty Ketley has been commissioned by Life360 to develop tips for parents on how to encourage children’s independence in the safest way.

She says: “Today, our parenting styles are shaped by the complexities of the modern world. While our parents had their own challenges to navigate, we now face additional considerations such as social media, knife crime, and county/local lines. These factors add to the complexity of fostering independence in our children when they are away from home.

“Apps are a very normal part of the modern world, and using a location-sharing app is a great way for children to allow their parents to know their whereabouts without having to ring or send messages, while also giving parents peace of mind. Of course, children need to know that they are being tracked, but rules can be put in place – jointly made by kids and parents. This way, children can still have their privacy and independence while knowing their parents are there should they need them.”

Even among the 40% of respondents whose children do not have a mobile phone, most say they will require active location sharing when the time comes (87%) and more than half of those will require it always (57%). The majority of parents rate location-sharing technology as necessary in two main cases; for contacting emergency services and when their child is travelling without a parent or guardian.

David Rice, International GM and CSO for Life360, said: “We commissioned this research to understand real-life concerns of UK parents and the steps they take to feel reassured about their children’s safety. The findings reinforce the fact that using location-sharing apps can provide families with a sense of security about each other’s safety and whereabouts whilst opening lines of communication, improving trust and allowing kids more freedom.

“It’s beneficial for tweens and teens to have access to smartphones as this technology often becomes an integral part of day-to-day family life across multiple generations and, in some cases, vital in emergency situations.”

Tech Review – Chipolo One Item Tracker

The Chipolo One Bluetooth tracker is a compact and lightweight device designed to help you find your keys or other items it’s attached to. It comes in various bright colours and is inconspicuous when connected to a pair of keys, thanks to its small, plastic disc design. It also has a replaceable battery that lasts for about two years and a Bluetooth range of up to 60 metres. Comparison

Conclusion

At techbuzz, we reviewed the Chipolo PLUS in May 2018 and the  Chipolo CARD Spot in June 2022, both were found to be solid and worked as required, while niggles were raised related to the battery, This model has a battery life of 2 years which is commendable but improved by the option to replace the battery as one with do with a watch battery.  In our review of the Chipolo One, we found it to be a practical and affordable choice for anyone prone to misplacing items. The device’s compatibility with both Android and iOS, as well as its free app with no subscription fees, further enhances its value. The simple design, with the ability to connect to any keys, key fobs, pet collars, or bags, and weighing only a few grams, makes it easy to forget until the item is lost or misplaced.

The extra features, such as a customizable ringtone, remote control capabilities, and out-of-range alerts, make it a fully-featured product. The Chipolo One’s two-year battery life, which is commendable and improved by the option to replace the battery, adds to its appeal. This device offers technology that works simply out of the box and keeps on working until required, making it an excellent choice for practical and affordable use’

Tech Review – Chipolo Card

The Chipolo Card is a Bluetooth item tracker designed to help locate lost items, such as wallets or keys. It is touted as the thinnest Chipolo, measuring 2.55mm in thickness, and is used in conjunction with the Chipolo app. The card is made of solid hard plastic, ensuring durability when placed in a wallet. It is approximately half the size of a typical credit card and emits a loud 95 dB sound that can be activated from the paired phone to aid in locating the unit. The device has a range of up to 200 feet in line of sight and is water-resistant with an IPX5 standard. The word “Chipolo” is derived from “chip” and “colours.”

Setup and Use: The Chipolo Card is compatible with the Chipolo app for both iOS and Android. The setup process involves downloading the app, pairing the device with the phone, and enabling key features such as locating the Chipolo, range alerts, activating the ringer, and taking a selfie. The device also utilises the Limited Chipolo Community search to find the unit if marked as lost.

Features

Compatibility Note: Users should be aware that if the Chipolo Card is used with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) blocking wallet, the wallet’s design may interfere with the device’s functionality. This is not a fault of the unit, but rather a limitation of the RFID wallet design.

 Overall Assessment

The Chipolo Card is user-friendly and compatible with both Android and iPhone devices. However, it is important to note that the device is equipped with a non-replaceable battery that has a lifespan of 1 year. Chipolo does offer a renewable option for the battery. The device’s numerous features, including receiving notifications when an item is accidentally left behind, make it a valuable tool for preventing the loss of belongings. In summary, the Chipolo Card is a reliable item tracker that could prove to be a worthwhile investment in the event of misplaced property.

Former Google X tech controller raised €1.1m crowdfunding to speak at ‘speed-funding event’

Tony Foote, who co-founded Foxes Bow Whiskey with Alice Carroll is set to share his investment journey with other fresh businesses looking to grow at and event with Ireland’s top lenders at a speed-funding event next week/February 22.

The Show Me the Money event, at the Republic of Work in South Mall, Cork, being run by small business support platform and membership community Enterprise Nation, will help start-ups and small businesses get access to early-stage seed funding and growth investment.

The event is the penultimate speed-funding session to be held, with previous events in Dublin and Galway attracting hundreds of founders.  It will see small business owners hear from experts on a range of funding solutions from venture to angel investment, crowdfunding to retail banks.

Tony Foote spotted a gap in the market for a modern, contemporary, consumer-facing Irish whiskey brand while he was working as a controller at Google X – Google’s moonshot ‘factory’ in Silicon Valley.

Tony said: “I love whiskey, but whiskey wasn’t speaking to me. Every bottle was marketed based on traditional values, pictures of rolling hills and castles and a sea of black and green bottles. I felt there was an opportunity to give it a fresh perspective and reach a whole new audience.”

After the initial idea in 2020, Tony brought in childhood friend Alice, who was at the time living in Toronto and working for Pernod Ricard. The brand was initially bootstrapped by the founders, and they both left their high-flying jobs in 2021 to work on the business full-time.

In May 2022 they successfully crowdfunded €625,000 on Crowdcube, from a mixture of 400 Angel and individual investors.

Tony said: “Crowdfunding works really well for consumer brands, but the proposition has to be compelling enough to align with people’s ideas and mindset. Crowdfunding can become a massive marketing exercise that creates an army of unofficial brand ambassadors.

“But for anyone considering crowdfunding I would say it’s not a silver bullet –the first campaign was a full-time job for us both for three to four months. If you go in and you know the level of effort it takes, then crowdfunding becomes a great vehicle for investment. But be aware it’s non-stop.”

Very quickly, Foxes Bow Whiskey was stocked domestically in Musgraves and Tesco, and the pair were exporting to Germany, Italy and built valuable accounts in Northern Ireland. But then the opportunity quickly came for them to go into the US – and they had to go back to the funding drawing board.

Tony said: “It was 12 months ahead of schedule if I’m honest. It’s expensive to launch in the US, it’s competitive and money talks.”

They went back to Crowdcube and raised another €500,000, taking their total raised to €1.1m.

Foxes Bow is now stocked in Texas – where there is a population of 40m – including a listing in Texas’ largest liquor store chain – Spec’s Wine & Liquor.

He’s joined at the event by John Stapleton, who has co-founded food industry-challenger brands including New Covent Garden Soup Company and Little Dish.

He now shares his experience and invests and mentors via Redesdale Food & Beverage Fund, which recently invested in Cork-based supermarket-supplier platform start-up Kwayga.

Also speaking will be Evelyn Moynihan, CEO of Kilkenny Group and Nora Irwin, Cork-based founder of sustainable solid fragrance brand Arona.

Enterprise Nation’s quarterly Small Business Barometer found 74% of Irish businesses said they plan to access funding this year. Just over a third (37%) plan to borrow €10,000 or less with one in five (18%) planning to borrow up to €20,000 and another 11 per cent raising up to €30,000.

A fifth (22%) expect to use alternative lending, but the most popular option for investment is still the bank, with a quarter (24%) looking to Ireland’s banking sector for funds. Only seven per cent said they would crowdfund.

The events are part of Access to Finance, a broader nationwide initiative in partnership with SBCI, Sage, BPFI, AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB to support more businesses to improve financial management skills. Since its launch last year, it has already supported just under 2,000 businesses, with 40 per cent of those at the start-up stage.

The event is free, but booking is essential hhttps://www.enterprisenation.com/find-something/show-me-the-money-cork/

Funders available at the event include:

Mags Fullen, head of mortgages and business banking at the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), said: “BPFI and our member banks are delighted to support the ‘Show me the Money’ event Cork. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role in Irish society, accounting for around 60% of all employment in the economy. According to the CSO, most of these businesses, over 92%, are what we call micro enterprises, employing less than 10 people. It is absolutely vital that we support these small businesses, not only at the start-up phase but also to support them to grow and thrive, and it’s clear that access to appropriate funding plays an important role in this regard.

“Considering there are many different options available, we hope that this event will help business owners by providing a pathway to the information and support they need.”

Suzanne Sweeney, head of strategy, finance and operations at the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI), said: “Increasing access to finance, promoting sustainability and enabling small businesses to grow and prosper are our core objectives and define everything we do in the SBCI.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the Irish economy and play a vital role in job creation and innovation. However, they often face difficulties accessing financing due to limited collateral or high-interest rates. Our role is to provide dedicated financial support to Irish businesses by making it easier for them to get the finance they need to grow, innovate and prosper.

“Events, like ‘Show me the Money’ are vital to help businesses understand and demystify the wide range of fundings options available to them.”

Emma Jones, founder of Enterprise Nation, said: “What is the best kind of finance for your business and how do you go about accessing it? Our Show me the Money event in Cork will help busy founders work out exactly that by listening to experts from different areas of finance.

“There are a dazzling array of routes to investment – venture capital investors, angel investors, crowdfunding, banks and alternative lenders.  We’ve got them all in one room so that small businesses can ask questions and learn the best route for themselves.”

The Access to Finance programme continues through to Summer,  with an online library of eLearning materials on how small firms can access funding and grow.
