Version 1 to invest in UK with 1,000 AI experts

Version 1, a leader in AI and digital transformation, today revealed it plans to invest £40m in the UK over the next few years through increased presence across its technology hubs. The addition of approximately 1,000 roles was welcomed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Taoiseach Michael Martin at a round table event with other industry leaders that formed part of the annual UK-Ireland summit, announced in September last year. The summit takes forward cooperation in four key areas to drive economic growth between the two countries, with the focus of today’s round table firmly on climate, energy, technology and innovation.

With discussions centred around the breadth and depth of shared values and interests between the UK and Ireland, Version 1 revealed that most of the new roles to be added over the coming years will be AI-related and located for proximity to its UK clients, situated across its London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast locations. The company continues to deliver for many public sector organisations in the UK and Ireland on successful, large-scale transformation and AI projects that have significantly improved services for citizens and civil servants alike.

By further embedding rich technology expertise locally, leveraging partnerships and providing the upskilling and training required, (particularly around the fast-paced evolution of AI and responsible technology in regulated industries), Version 1 commits to support that will keep both economies at the forefront of innovation.

Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris and Minister James Lawless announce €3.2 million to develop Defence Force Technology

The Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Simon Harris TD and the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD today, 5th March, announced €3.2 million in funding to develop new technologies in the Defence Forces.

The funding will assist innovative research projects including proposals to enhance the Naval Service’s capabilities in maritime situational awareness, encourage the use of drones in search and rescue operations, support aeromedical emergency services, develop advanced shelter designs as well as ideas for disruptive/radical technologies.

Announcing the funding, Tánaiste Simon Harris said: 
“I am delighted to announce this €3.2 million investment, which will help develop new and innovative technologies in our Defence Forces. 
“This funding is not only designed to benefit our Defence Forces personnel, but also wider society as a whole.
“I welcome the fact there are members of the Defence Forces, Civil Defence and the Office of Emergency Planning embedded into each research team.
“This collaboration will foster a deep understanding of both the challenges and the role research can play in addressing them. 
“I look forward to seeing the progress the teams make over the coming months.”

Minister James Lawless said:
“Today’s announcement builds on and reinforces the partnerships we have developed between the research community and the Defence Forces, Civil Defence and Office of Emergency Planning. It demonstrates the value and potential of collaborative research in addressing the challenges faced by our Defence Forces and Irish society as a whole. I congratulate the 10 teams receiving funding and wish them success as they work to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges they are addressing over the coming months.”

Lieutenant General Sean Clancy, Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, said: 
“Óglaigh na hÉireann is proud to support the Research Ireland-Defence Innovation Challenge with military subject matter experts. These personnel will provide both operational context and an understanding of the key challenges faced by Defence personnel in an effort to enhance defence capability. Four key challenges were identified by the Defence Forces which were posed to Irish Researchers: Maritime Situational Awareness, Advanced Shelter Concepts, Aeromedical Emergency Service Dispatch and Search & Rescue. The Defence Research, Technology and Innovation Office co-ordinates the programme with Research Ireland and supports the defence subject matter experts during engagement with the research teams.”

Microsoft announces 550 highly skilled jobs at the cutting-edge of the AI sector in Ireland

Taoiseach Simon Harris joined James O’Connor, Microsoft Ireland Site Leader and Corporate Vice-President of Microsoft Global Operations Service Centre, and IDA Ireland Chief Executive, Michael Lohan, today to announce that Ireland has been selected as a key location for Microsoft to invest in advancing its global AI innovation. The decision will result in Microsoft adding 550 new Irish based engineering and R&D roles to pioneer the development of new AI technologies.

The investment will see Microsoft, a global leader in the development and use of AI, undertake significant industrial research into AI to develop critical, leading-edge technology in the area of AI and cyber security, which will then be made available to public and private sector organisations all around the world.

Multidisciplinary teams in the areas of Azure Networking & Infrastructure, Business & Industry Copilot, Customer Success Engineering and Cyber Security will be recruited to investigate groundbreaking technologies and the development AI infrastructure that is scalable, responsible, trusted and secure. The new roles will ensure that Microsoft Ireland’s Engineering Hub will have end-to-end AI product development capabilities.

Furthermore, teams will seek to drive new applications for AI across multiple industries and create brand new AI-enabled product offerings and internal solutions for Microsoft, supporting the corporation’s strategic objective to be at the forefront of responsible AI development and cyber security.

This investment will result in an additional 550 new highly skilled jobs at Microsoft Ireland over the next three to four years, across areas such as software engineering, applied sciences, product management, program management, data science, design, technical writing and analytics. 120 of these roles are available to apply for from today in software engineering, applied sciences, security research, product management and program management.

Microsoft first invested in Ireland in 1985 and with the addition of the roles announced today the company will employ more than 6,000 people across a multifunctional campus in Leopardstown, its data centre campus in Grange Castle, and LinkedIn.

This investment is supported by the Government of Ireland through IDA Ireland.
