Fianna Fáil Leadership Fallout Tops Airwaves as Most Defining and Negative Story of 2025 Presidential Election

The latest Everhaze “Battle of the Airwaves” report has found that Fianna Fáil’s leadership turmoil was the most defining and negatively framed story of the 2025 Presidential election, eclipsing all other topics across more than 16,000 radio mentions. The fallout, which was intertwined with Jim Gavin’s withdrawal generated over 2,000 mentions resulting in a sustained national discussion and an average negative weighted sentiment of –43.8 pp, the lowest of the election.

Amid the turbulence, Maria Steen emerged as an unexpected winner of the campaign, gaining national prominence on a non-polarising current securing 1,300 mentions largely avoiding controversy and securing net sentiment of +1.0 pp. In contrast, the two leading candidates, Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys, were both drawn into negative narratives late in the race, as Connolly’s “Bank Representation” (-3.6 pp) and Humphreys’ “Shane O’Farrell” (-4.2 pp) storylines became the most damaging stories of their respective campaigns.

Connolly ultimately led the airwaves in the final fortnight (44.1% share of voice, +2.3 pp net sentiment) with coverage driven by governance reform and community advocacy themes. Humphreys followed at 37.3% (–2.6 pp), her tone weighed down by ongoing justice and departmental accountability discussions. Gavin’s residual post-withdrawal commentary held 18.6% (–3.6 pp) and remained strongly associated with leadership fallout.

Local radio again proved decisive, accounting for 72% of all mentions, while national talk shows supplied narrative framing and tone moderation. Overall sentiment across the campaign closed slightly negative (–0.8 pp net), underscoring a cycle defined more by leadership disruption and controversy than by policy promotion.

Speaking about the findings, James McCann, CEO of Everhaze said:

“Jim Gavin’s withdrawal from the race, and the ensuing fallout for Fianna Fáil’s leadership, will likely stand as the defining story of the 2025 Presidential campaign. Equally striking is how Maria Steen’s absence from the ballot became an unexpected advantage. The sheer volume of her mentions, combined with their notably non-polarising tone, propelled her into national prominence without the burden of controversy. It’s also unsurprising that Catherine Connolly was the only candidate to finish with a positive sentiment score, largely because Heather Humphreys’ campaign struggled to generate strong counter-narratives capable of offsetting a series of negative stories.”

The Battle of the Airwaves: Irish Presidential Campaign 2025 report analysed more than 16,000 radio mentions from 60 stations nationwide, tracking sentiment, share of voice, geography, and trend dynamics between 24 September and 25 October 2025.

Everhaze is an Irish-built PR intelligence platform that tracks real-time media coverage across radio, print, and online sources in Ireland and the UK. Its technology combines broadcast capture with AI-driven analysis to map who is getting talked about, where, and in what tone. The platform is widely used by communicators to monitor campaigns, understand sentiment shifts, and measure share of voice.

As part of its continuing analysis of the 2025 Presidential campaign, Everhaze will host a live webinar today at 1pm titled “The De-brief” featuring Everhaze CEO James McCann in conversation with political commentator Derek Mooney. The session will unpack the full findings of the Battle of the Airwaves report, explore how leadership narratives shaped tone and momentum across local and national radio, and examine what the data reveals about voter sentiment heading into 2026.

The live discussion will also cover:

  • How radio became the defining battleground of the 2025 campaign
  • Why Fianna Fáil’s leadership fallout dominated the airwaves
  • How Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Maria Steen each built distinct tonal profiles
  • What the broader implications are for media strategy, messaging, and trust in Irish political communication

Digital News Report Ireland 2025

A majority of Irish people are either extremely or very interested in news, according to the annual Digital News Report Ireland 2025, published today by Coimisiún na Meán. Research for the Digital News Report is undertaken by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford and analysis of the Irish data is provided by the DCU Institute for Future Media, Democracy and Society (FuJo).

The Irish Report, which is in its eleventh year, shows that most people in Ireland (56%) across all age groups are interested in news. This represents the highest level of interest in news since 2022, up 3 points from last year, but down from a peak of 70% in 2021, during the Covid pandemic. This enthusiasm for news puts Irish audiences ahead of their UK (39%) and US (51%) counterparts and ahead of the European average (45%).

When asked about trusted sources of news, RTÉ News (72%), local radio news (72%) and local newspapers (71%) emerge as the most trusted brands, underlining the continued importance of both national and local news sources for Irish audiences.

Rónán Ó Domhnaill, Media Development Commissioner at Coimisiún na Meán said: ‘’Coimisiún na Meán is delighted to offer our continued support to the Digital News Report Ireland, which reflects our commitment to a media landscape that consumers can trust, by supporting access to high-quality sources of news and information.

Whether watching, listening, streaming, or reading, the Digital News Report shows that most Irish people can’t get enough of news. It is encouraging to see that interest in news remains high in Ireland when compared internationally, even as the formats used to consume news continue to change. We are heartened to see the continuing trend of the Irish public’s unique and longstanding relationship with radio, which remains a cornerstone of Ireland’s media landscape. It is also important to see the trust Irish people place in local news sources, with local radio and local newspapers among the most trusted brands for Irish audiences.

While the Report gives us cause for optimism about the Irish news sector, considering the public’s strong appetite for news, we recognise that An Coimisiún’s ambition of developing and shaping a media landscape that reflects who we are as a society requires ongoing and sustainable levels of funding for media outlets to support high-quality journalism, and news that people can trust.’’

Key findings from this year’s Report include:

Interest in news – Interest in news in Ireland remains robust compared to other countries. 22% of Irish people say they are ‘extremely interested’ in news, with 34% saying they are ‘very interested’ and 33% saying they are ‘somewhat interested’. Just 3% say they are ‘not at all interested’ in news.

Trust in news – Overall, Irish audiences trust news more when compared to other countries. When asked if they trust the news most of the time, 50% of respondents in Ireland ‘agreed’ or ‘strongly agreed’, compared to 35% in the UK, 30% in the US and 39% for merged data from Europe.

Trust in brands – Traditional news outlets continue to perform well when Irish audiences are asked about their trust in brands. RTÉ News (72%), local or regional radio (72%), and local or regional newspapers (71%) are the most trusted brands. 70% of Irish respondents described the Irish Times as trustworthy, with the same percentage for BBC News, 68% for the Irish Independent and 66% for each of Newstalk, Today FM and Sky News.

Source of News – When asked which platforms you have used in the last week as a source of news, 58% of Irish respondents said television, with the same percentage (58%) citing online media (excluding social media and blogs). 47% say they have used social media as a source of news in the last week, with 36% saying radio, 22% saying printed newspapers, 12% saying podcasts and 5% citing AI chatbots.

Paying for News – The Report shows that 20% of people in Ireland are now paying for news, up from 7% in 2015 and a 3-point increase from last year. When asked if they have had a paid subscription/membership to a digital news service in the last year, the two frontrunners among Irish audiences are the Irish Independent (36%) and the Irish Times (33%).

Radio and Podcasts – In 2025, 11% of Irish respondents say they use radio as their primary source of news, which is significantly higher compared to the UK (8%), US (3%) or the European average (7%). When asked about the use of radio as a source of any news consumed, this figure increases to 36%. Irish audiences are also on-board with podcasts, with 12% listening to podcasts as a source of news in the last week, higher than in the UK (7%) and the European average (9%) but lower than the US (15%).

Artificial Intelligence – Audiences’ attitudes to the use of AI for news are changing. Last year, those ‘very’ and ‘somewhat’ comfortable with news mainly produced by AI with some human oversight were 15%. This has increased to 19% this year, with under-35s almost twice as comfortable as over-35s when considering the same measure.

Disinformation and Misinformation – When asked for their thoughts about online news, 68% of Irish respondents say they are concerned about what is real and what is fake on online. All age cohorts show concern about fake information online, with the highest rate (72%) among those aged 65+ and the lowest rate (62%) among those aged 18-24.

Commenting on the Digital News Report Ireland 2025, Dr. Eileen Culloty, Deputy Director of the DCU Institute for Future Media, Democracy and Society (FuJo) said: ‘’Local media enjoy strong public trust, an indication of their deep roots in Irish life. But trust alone doesn’t pay salaries or sustain newsrooms. The big challenge is to convert trust into viable careers in local journalism so that local media can continue informing communities.”

Earlier this year, Coimisiún na Meán awarded €5.7 million through new Journalism Schemes, funded by the Department of Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport and which covered Local Democracy and Courts Reporting. These Schemes have to date facilitated over 100 new or enhanced journalism roles in Ireland. By the end of this year, An Coimisiún will have run the second round of those Schemes, as well as two new Journalism Schemes, covering Digital Transformation and News Reporting.

The Digital News Report Ireland 2025 can be found on the Coimisiún na Meán website.

Nokia supplies private wireless to Maersk’s fleet for real-time cargo tracking

Nokia today announced that it has signed a contract with Danish global integrated logistics leader, Maersk, to equip 450 vessels in its fleet with Nokia’s industry-leading private wireless network solutions. This important deployment is part of Maersk’s IoT connectivity platform, OneWireless, which offers numerous benefits to its customers, including real-time cargo tracking, enhanced supply chain visibility, and improved operational efficiency.

The evolving environment of logistics and maritime operations is uniquely complex and highly mobile, requiring resilient and flexible technology for real-time asset tracking and positioning. By transitioning to Nokia’s private wireless technology, Maersk will overcome the challenges of its current infrastructure onboard both its own and chartered vessels and gain access to increased scalability and future-proof connectivity.

The new unified mobile network powered by Nokia’s radio portfolio is designed to support numerous IoT devices and secure interoperability between private and public networks, ensuring Maersk customers’ cargo is reliably monitored at sea, port, or land. This is especially important for tracking parameters such as temperature and humidity for fruit and other perishables.

“With our next-generation connectivity platform, we will be able to offer our customers notable benefits, including real-time cargo tracking, enhanced supply chain visibility, and improved operational efficiency. This platform is designed to support thousands of IoT devices, ensuring optimal performance for reefer tracking and fleet IoT,” says Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Vessel & Cargo Connectivity at Maersk.

“Nokia’s technology leadership in private wireless goes far beyond just connectivity, as demonstrated by this major new contract with Maersk. Our Radio Access portfolio and MantaRay network management solution will deliver reliable, real-time, and future-ready mobile networks that will optimize Maersk’s marine operations. We look forward to working collaboratively with them on this important project,” said Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia.

The solution leverages Nokia’s small cells portfolio, including Nokia Shikra Remote Radio Heads (RRH) and compact baseband, along with custom-designed antennas. Each vessel has a small core connected to the radio, utilizing satellite communication for backhaul. Additionally, Nokia’s intelligent network management system, MantaRay NM, located in Maersk’s operations center, provides a consolidated network view for optimal monitoring and management.

The deployment is underway and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.

The Majority Darwin Bluetooth FM Radio Alarm Clock is a new product on the market taking us back to days of old which we all remember well with the classic radio alarm clock.

On the bigger side than most before it has a large display with nice big digits you can not miss and an array of tactile buttons up top to change the settings and controls you have up to 30 preset stations and you can of course tune in your own ones the radio also acts as an alarm if you wish to use it as one and you can set two alarms you can also snooze as before with a bug button up top that also doubles as a dimmer and you can change the temp to Celsius or Fahrenheit.

There is a wide array of buttons to change the mode the volume skip and reverse tracks or stations so you are not short of features, this one however has something we did not have in the past and it is wireless charging and bluetooth connectivity which is great for those who like some nostalgia but keeping it current.

The Majority Eversden Bluetooth Water-Resistant DAB+ Radio that is portable and functional with good sound and you can connect your smartphone or tablet to it too which is handy.

Asides being a portable radio this can be used a a portable speaker and is very robust and has 15 hours of playback so there is plenty of juice for a full days session at the pool, beach or a long bath or shower with it being water-resistant.

Sadly DAB radio was killed off in Ireland not too long ago and we could only test it with FM and Bluetooth which was not loss to us when it comes to sound so this is good news.

There is a suite of buttons up top to allow you control the device and get the settings tailored to your needs and is simple to use and there is no need to download an app.

Up top there is two dials one for volume and one which is more functional as you will see in the video review below then you have the cluster of controls between these offers power on/off/mode/preset-recall station/menu button/info and a dimmer and snooze button.
