Hybrid workers face most distractions in the office according to Codex

A new survey by Codex Office Solutions, Ireland’s leading B2B office supplies and solutions provider, reveals the growing challenge of workplace distractions in the era of hybrid working. The study, conducted among 500 Irish office workers, sheds light on how interruptions impact productivity and what employees are doing to maintain focus.

The Codex survey highlights the main culprits of workplace distractions:

  • Receiving phone calls topped the list, distracting 42% of office workers
  • Background noise (41%) and colleague interruptions (40%) also cause major work disruption
  • Receiving emails (28%) and social media notifications (27%) round out the key disruptors

While the majority (67%) of hybrid workers still experience the most distractions in the shared workplace, they also face unique challenges when working remotely. Household chores such as laundry and cleaning topped the polls as the biggest disruptor for 41% of hybrid workers, followed by looking after children or pets (30%), and cooking or preparing meals (30%).

62% of workers admit to spending more than 15 minutes every day on non-work-related activities during office hours. Nearly half (46%) of respondents report that workplace distractions at least slightly affect their productivity, while 38% say they moderately or significantly impact their workflow.

Personal technology such as smartphones can also be problematic for workers’ productivity, with 74% admitting to being distracted by devices at least once in the working day: 1 in 5 lose focus at least once every hour while 1 in 10 admit to being distracted by personal technology multiple times an hour.

To combat distractions, Irish workers are turning to various strategies:

  • Taking regular breaks (57%) and changing work environments (19%) help many regain focus
  • Noise-cancelling headphones (20%) and time management apps (12%) are popular anti-disruption tools
  • Setting boundaries with colleagues (34%) and using ‘Do not disturb’ settings (41%) on personal technology are also effective measures

Codex’s findings highlight the importance of dedicated spaces for focus in Irish offices. 56% of Irish workers report a lack of access to quiet spaces, with 28% saying that a quiet space would boost their workplace productivity.

Forms:

Notion’s new native form tool enables users to capture responses directly within the platform. It provides everything needed in a ‘forms’ tool while leveraging the power of Notion to organise, analyse, and track information in one place. Users can now:

Layouts allows users to more easily customise the look and feel of their Notion pages. Different use-cases, such as tasks, projects or meeting notes can each have their own layouts, which can be configured easily by dragging and dropping properties and modules. This includes the ability to:

  • ‘Pin’ key database properties for easy access and organise others into collapsible sections
  • Organise files, media, and large text fields to match how you work
  • Use a simple drag-and-drop builder for customising layouts

All users will have access to layouts for free.

 

Improvements to automations:

Automations within Notion are now more connected and customisable, with three new action capabilities being introduced.

  • Connecting workflows in Notion and Gmail: Users are now able to use an automation to notify people via Gmail quickly and easily. This could include instances like a form being submitted or the status of a project changing
  • Customising automations with formulas: Database and button automations now support formulas that can complete steps in the background when an action is triggered. For instance, when a task is marked as done, it can automatically show how long it took to finish. Many repetitive workflows can now be fully automated in this way
  • Web request actions: This enables users to automate actions in other tools using simple low-code / no-code platforms based on real-time triggers in Notion. This functionality is coming soon

Marketplace:

The new Marketplace is a redesigned website experience and accessible within the Notion app via the sidebar. Marketplace serves as a trusted place to find and get inspired by what’s possible in Notion, with templates made by a community of experts, designers, and everyday users. Templates are a quick and easy way to get started with Notion, a source of inspiration, and a way to learn the product or a new use case.

The new Marketplace includes several tools to help creators list and sell their templates more effectively. These include:

More than half of employees in Ireland suffer from productivity anxiety

Workhuman, the company revolutionising the way employees celebrate, connect with and appreciate each other in the workplace, today announces new findings from its Human Workplace Index, which found that 64% of employees in Ireland are suffering from productivity anxiety. Recognition is a key element in helping to improve employees’ wellbeing, with 57% saying they would feel less anxious if they received proper recognition for their work.

The research also found that although 58% of employees said they feel more productive at the office, a gender disparity exists in perceived in-office productivity. While 71% of male employees felt they accomplished more on in-office days, only 33% of female employees reported the same. Despite this, women are more likely to work in the office five days a week compared to men, with 58% of women required to be in the office, versus 30% of men.

The survey of 1,000 full-time employees in Ireland was commissioned by Workhuman and conducted by Pollfish to gain insights into workplace sentiment, productivity and wellbeing.

Additionally, while work-life balance is highlighted as the most important aspect of workplace wellbeing for 65% of Irish employees and 31% believe that companies facilitating work-life balance are more successful in fostering employee-employer trust, there are significant disparities in the distribution of wellness benefits between men and women. Nearly half of employees report receiving wellness benefits or perks in addition to standard benefits and say they improve their overall wellbeing, but men are more than twice as likely to have access to perks like gym memberships, healthy snacks, and in-office wellness spaces compared to women.
