  • On average, Sunday was the highest data usage day of the week across 2022.
  • Weather incidents such as Storm Eunice in February saw a surge in usage as households spent more time at home.
  • The total broadband usage across the network (4,400PB) is the equivalent of 220 billion hours gaming, or 13 billion hours of video chat, or 2 billion hours film streaming or 678 billion songs streamed.

Mobile Data

  • 12 million minutes of mobile voice calls were recorded on Christmas Eve, making it the busiest day for mobile conversation as people shared festive wishes with friends and family.
  • Tuesday, December 27th was the busiest day for mobile data usage, as customers streamed video and music services.
  • The equivalent of five million movie downloads took place across the mobile network over the festive period, December 24th – 28th, an increase of over 40% on the same period in 2021 as customers streamed entertainment on the go.
  • Traffic doubled across eir’s 5G network versus the same period in 2021. 5G, is the fifth generation of mobile technology that is up to 100 times faster than 4G, providing faster connectivity speeds, ultra-low latency and greater bandwidth, excellent gaming and video streaming experiences.

Connections Are Top Priority For Gamers, eir, Official Broadband Partner of GamerFest 2022, Takes A Look at Gamer Priorities

As Official Broadband Partner of GamerFest 2022, eir, Ireland’s leading telecommunications provider, commissioned research with gamers in Ireland to look at how, when, where and with whom they are connecting with while gaming. To mark the partnership with Ireland’s largest gaming event taking place in the RDS, Dublin on October 22nd and 23rd, eir was keen to understand the role of connection with the gaming community in Ireland.

In terms of the top priority, strong and reliable connection is key with 81% of participants stating that having a high-speed broadband connection was the most important factor a seamless and uninterrupted online gaming experience.

Strong network connections not only facilitate a seamless gaming experience but also more social connections with 40% making friends through online gaming community.

Connectivity is playing an increasingly important role in gaming with online games requiring a reliable, lag-free, low-latency connection with research revealing that 58% play most of their online games through their mobile phones and tablets, meaning gamers can rely on eir’s 5G and Fibre to the Home networks for split second accuracy while gaming online and the best overall gaming experience.

eir’s 5G network is available to more than 70% of the population of Ireland and continues to expand, with ultrafast data speeds in 485 towns and cities across Ireland. Fibre to the Home is a future-proofed network capable of delivering speeds of 2Gbps straight to more than 900,000 homes and businesses, further extending the availability of high-speed broadband connections across Ireland.

Speaking at the launch of the partnership Susan Brady, eir’s Managing Director of Consumer and Small Business commented: “At eir, we are committed to providing our customers with access to world leading technologies and the highest-quality connectivity. 5G is now free on eir

You will still need a 5G handset, sim and plan..

5G has been a massive failure since its inception here however there is several reasons why and price being one the area you live in being another and the cost of handsets themselves…Early adopters like me had to pay for the service which for me who is with another provider is pretty underwhelming.

Time heals wounds though, 5G handsets have dropped in price which helps but paying extra for the use of 5G is another matter, And do we we even need it? 5G is faster than 4G obviously and up to 100 times faster at peak and over time this will need a real time test depending on how many are connected to the network.

What 5G will do in theory

5G will enhance life as we now have more connected devices in our homes alone something needs to happen, for example we have smart cameras smart fridges I have a smart hoover, coffee maker, humidifier ( reviews on those due soon) and for the most we have the likes of Alexa and Google home in our house, 5G is designed for more than just our phones and will be of huge benefit to cloud services too but not only that 5G will enhance the likes of farming, gaming and traffic.

Do you need a 5G sim card

People have asked me this!! Well yes and a handset and plan if you have a 5G enabled phone many of us will still have a 4G sim card unless you bought a plan when you got the phone but as we already know the uptake has been slow to say the least but this will now change and add pressure on others to follow suit so you will need to get onto eir and order your new 5G sim card to avail of the service.

eir has 70% of the population covered (geographically small compared to 4G coverage) and now has added more towns to the list so in total there 336 towns and cities across Ireland

Competition is a great thing and what will happen next is that other networks will follow suit going forward, their MVNOs however will take a back seat here like GoMo and 48 but lets see how that fair out over time.

eir to help enterprises handle dispersed “hybrid” workforces #eir #hybrid

eir Business will give Irish enterprises access to a world-class Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) solution that is new to the Irish market. The solution leverages purpose-built edge networking appliances from Dell Technologies OEM Solutions, the unrivalled reach of eir’s national fibre network and VMware SD-WAN software which has been rated number one in the world by Gartner for three years running.

The move to remote working has shown that many legacy networks are struggling with increased demand from users, who require fast and easy access to an ever-growing list of cloud-based applications.

As we unlock the potential for long-term hybrid working, SD-WAN’s benefits come to the fore. It extends the corporate network to users with the same access and user experience they would have in the office while ensuring security and compliance. IT teams have complete visibility and control over the network from a single dashboard. The exclusive solution is easy to deploy, uses available bandwidth more efficiently, and remains flexible, secure, and reliable through spikes in data usage; essential for the increase in cloud-based applications.

Martin Wells, Managing Director eir Business, commented on the partnership; “We have worked closely with our enterprise customers over the last difficult year, and have listened to them on what they need to prepare for the future. We felt this partnership and innovative new solution would be key to delivering their requirements. As a fully managed service, it gives our customers everything they need to move away from legacy WAN, support cloud adoption, and flexible work practices in a completely risk-free way.”

Jason Ward, Vice-President, and Managing Director, Dell Technologies Ireland said “This comes at a critical time as organisations embrace a hybrid work model and accelerate the pace of digital transformation to meet the rapidly evolving needs of customers. By harnessing the power of edge computing, Dell Technologies’ work with eir Business can help ensure simplified network management, security, visibility, control and reliability for businesses navigating the future of work.”

New network GoMo launches in Ireland. #GoMo #eir

Competition in the telecoms world has heated up things a bit with a new player in town but there is a catch or two, It is belong to eir who have not had it easy over the last while and there is no shops and phones. It is all web based and similar to what is on offer elsewhere by the eir owner. eir also will have no hand on this when it comes to customer service and as we know customer service goes along way and it will in time tell just how good this is going to be assuming the uptake will be a big one.

The pricing on offer for the first 100,000 customers stands at 9.99 a month which is undercutting everyone else out there as it stands now but this move might just see others drop their price and there is nothing better than competition in my book but this whole thing just reminds me or the meteor/eir thing and ID mobile and ID mobile did not last too long.  This is a rolling plan something I am on with another network paying €25 a month for today

To join you just bring your number or sign up and you will pay €10 up front which is not bad and the data allowance is the one to watch as we now consume more data than ever before  and you get a whopping 80GB, So to cap off what is on offer it is all calls, sms your 80GB data and 10GB data of roaming but all this falls under the FUP policy and if you are outside the EU and roam you will be hit hard in the pocket paying big bucks there.

Usage outside of your inclusive allowances will be charged as follows:

  • Voicemail – Free
  • Additional Minutes – 30c/Min
  • SMS – 15c per SMS

See the roaming charges below. You can see more in the PRICING guide

Fair usage – 45,000 minutes and 10,000 SMS which being honest is fine most of us today use social media or Whats App for example to communicate, I think myself I get bout 5 text a week and send the same so no fear of going outside the limits or calls for that matter.

Is this a good deal? On paper yes once you dont roam outside the EU but you can see more at https://shop.gomo.ie/  I  will be back with a review on the service in a few weeks and just lets see how customer service works out.

Update – New fee €12.99

Update – Now 4 sims can be used on one account
