FREENOW partners with MOBY to offer in-app bookings for pedal and e-bikes in Dublin

FREENOW, Ireland’s number 1 taxi app, has partnered with Irish bike sharing provider MOBY to make its 500+ pedal and e-bike fleet available on the FREENOW app. MOBY and FREENOW co-branded bikes will be available to book in Dublin via the FREENOW app alongside taxis from today.

The new partnership with MOBY is part of FREENOW’s ongoing commitment to enhance urban transportation choices by offering a range of sustainable and efficient transport options to passengers in Ireland. It will allow FREENOW users to adopt a more flexible approach to daily transport and choose from different transport options when travelling for work or leisure, easily combining taxis and bikes with existing public transport. This mirrors the multi-modal progress made by FREENOW in other markets, such as the UK, France, Spain or Germany, where passengers are combining a variety of transport options to get about the city – from e-scooters, e-bikes, e-mopeds, and taxis to car sharing, all available via the FREENOW app.

FREENOW’s growing multi-mobility offering also contributes to its sustainability efforts, as the company takes measurable sustainability efforts to become a net-zero platform. This is clear from insights drawn from other European countries, where a variety of mobility options are already seamlessly integrated into the FREENOW app. With over 200K e-scooters and e-bikes vehicles available across Europe, during 2023 alone, electric shared vehicles on the FREENOW platform saved 2,067 tons of CO2, highlighting the positive impact of multi-modal transport.

MOBY operates public bike share schemes in Dublin, Athlone, Mullingar, Ashbourne and Tullamore and corporate bike share schemes for Dublin Airport, Eastpoint Business Park and Sport Ireland, as well as a growing international business. Currently, it has over 500 bikes available throughout Dublin city, and plans are underway to extend this number to 1,500. To unlock a bike, users pay a €1 fee; the first three minutes are then free, and after that period, it costs €0.15 per minute for an e-bike and €0.02 for a manual bike. Users can locate and book the e-bikes through the FREENOW app under the new ‘2-wheels’ option and use them within the designated operating area visible on the map in the app in Dublin.

Commenting on the launch, Charlie Gleeson, General Manager of FREENOW Ireland, said: “We are delighted to partner with MOBY to integrate a new bike service to the FREENOW app, making it easier for passengers to consider efficient and sustainable transport options.

The Irish government’s ambitious target to reduce carbon emissions by 50% in the transport sector by 2030 sets a clear focus for the sector before the turn of the decade. At FREENOW, we are committed to supporting the taxi industry’s progression towards these targets by continuing to onboard more EV drivers and expand our green (EV) taxi fleet alongside increased micro-mobility solutions, such as the MOBY integration.

This announcement is also timely given the recent micromobility regulations introduced under the Road Traffic and Road Act 2023. The new legislation will positively contribute to the integration of both e-bikes and e-scooters on Irish roads and support the safer use of micromobility moving forward. This partnership with MOBY forms part of our wider plans to integrate additional mobility options into the FREENOW app, offering more choice to passengers in Ireland in the coming months in line with this new legislation.

We will continue to drive change by ensuring passengers can have easy access to more and increasingly sustainable transport options that residents or visitors can conveniently use and combine with existing public transport options to move fast and safely from A to B in Dublin and beyond.”

Also commenting on the launch, Akash Kajal, Operations Manager of MOBY said: “We are thrilled to collaborate with FREENOW to enhance mobility choices for Dublin transport users, making it even easier to rent and ride a bike for more people. By integrating seamless MOBY bike rentals directly into the FREENOW app and leveraging Dublin City Council’s commendable efforts in expanding bike lanes citywide, we truly believe that multi-modal transportation can empower consumers with more efficient, sustainable, and healthier travel options throughout Dublin.”

Research* conducted by the National Transport Authority (NTA) in its ‘Walking and Cycling Index’ reveals the growing demand for sustainable transport options in Ireland. According to the NTA findings, 1 in 4 adults in Ireland currently cycle at least once a week, and 39% expressed a desire to cycle more. Every day, those who walk and cycle take nearly 530,000 private cars off the road in the Dublin Metropolitan Area.

Keego Mobility Announces iQuTech as Fleet Management Partner in Ireland

iQuTech is also Keego Mobility’s logistics and support partner in Europe and will set up a new division called iQuTech Mobility that will leverage their extensive operations to provide Irish delivery companies and their couriers with Keego Mobility’s purpose-built, sturdy delivery ebikes and world-class maintenance and customer support.
“We are excited to help the last mile delivery market in Ireland become more sustainable. The couriers who deliver our food and online purchases deserve the best service,” says Mark O’Sullivan, Co-founder, iQuTech. “Keego Mobility’s high quality products and our extensive service network will ensure that couriers will maximize the use of their delivery ebikes.”
iQuTech also sees great potential in Keego Mobiility’s ebikes for the First Mile Collections business where couriers can also pick up goods being returned, saving consumers the need to drop a package off at collections points or a post office.#
In Ireland, the Online Food Delivery market is projected to reach US$1.16bn in 2024 and is still growing. The Grocery Delivery market is also expected to grow, reaching a market volume of US$0.91bn this year.
Using electric bikes to deliver greatly cuts down on CO2 emissions. And this is something that is appealing to the customers. According to a study made by the delivery platform Just Eats, more than half of delivery customers want to know more about the carbon footprint of their takeaway orders.
First unveiled at the Taipei Cycle Show in March 2022, Keego Mobility’s delivery ebikes are built to handle the hard work of daily deliveries with long range and low total cost of ownership. The front and rear racks save the couriers from having to carry their cargo in a backpack, making for better ergonomics and ensures the food arrives as the chef intended. The company is co-founded by Irishman Philip Corri. Born in Dublin, Mr. Corri moved to Spain for his studies and eventually moved to Taiwan for work where he eventually met his other two co-founders and started Keego Mobility.
“We are excited to partner with such a strong Irish company such as iQuTech. There are thousands of couriers in Ireland that spends every day driving around on a fossil fuel scooter. When they switch to one of our delivery ebikes, there are 98% less CO2 emissions, quieter streets and the couriers will not have to carry cargo on their backs, truly a win for everyone,” says Philip Corri.

Bolt and Snapchat reimagine cities without parked cars in new AR collaboration

Global mobility company Bolt has partnered with Snapchat to create a new Lens that gives every person the power to reimagine their city by visualising urban spaces with fewer parked cars in real time using augmented reality (AR).

The new Lens, which is called P.E.O.P.L.E. (Parked Environment Optimisation for Public Land Enhancement), recognises parked cars and turns them into environments built for people, such as outdoor cafés, cycling lanes and green spaces, and is available to millions of Snapchatters worldwide. It’s the world’s first augmented reality lens that detects cars and replaces them with people-friendly places with a single tap.

The Lens forms part of Bolt’s newest pan-European brand campaign “Feels Like Home”, which encourages people to aspire towards better urban environments with less congestion by highlighting how cities should feel like an extension of your living room, rather than a space for cars.

As the urban populations grow and cities are battling with rising transport emissions and congestion, shared mobility – including shared taxis, bikes and scooters – can help people switch away from using private cars by increasing connectivity to public transport and catering to people’s different mobility needs. Bolt offers taxis on demand in Dublin and Cork, and shared electric bike rental in Sligo, Kilkenny, Wexford, and Bray.

Research from the Tallinn-based firm revealed that only one-quarter of Irish drivers believe they are likely to give up their car in the next five years. Over half (54.55%) of the 1000 drivers that responded cited the overall expense of running a car as a potential reason for giving it up, whilst 52.35% mentioned rising fuel costs as a motivating factor.

A recent consumer survey from McKinsey found that nearly 50% of people are willing to swap private cars for different transport in the next decade, and almost 30% aim to use micromobility or shared mobility more in the coming decade. Bolt’s research also confirms that 63% of people believe shared mobility (ride-hailing, e-scooters, e-bikes, and car sharing) decreases the necessity for owning private cars.

Liisa Ennuste, a creative strategist at Bolt, said: “For decades, cities have prioritised cars over pedestrians, bikes and scooters. This is reflected in the space distribution in cities where more than 60% of urban areas are reserved for cars instead of pedestrians and infrastructure for more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

“Many cities have realised that and are moving away from a car-first mindset by building cycling roads, supporting micromobility, and turning parking spaces into small parklets. Our collaboration with Snapchat is a reminder of how cities can be improved by creating more spaces for people, not cars.”

Poli Dor, Head of Central & Eastern Europe Business Solutions at Snap, commented: “We’re really excited about our work with Bolt, not least because this project helps us to showcase AR’s ability to imagine and promote a more sustainable way of living. We have over 397 million daily active users on Snapchat, so to bring this type of creativity to our platform can have a massive impact, and can help educate people to make more informed lifestyle decisions, like how they get around their city.”

In addition to the Snapchat app, the Feels Like Home campaign will be activated across many other channels, including social media and OOH.

Feels Like Home is the latest Bolt campaign which highlights the potential for cities to be improved if more urban space was devoted to people and infrastructure for shared mobility options like ride-hailing, e-scooters and e-bikes, which reduce the need for owning a private car. Bolt’s suite of products offers viable alternatives to private car ownership: ride-hailing seeks to replace the need for owning a private car, while e-scooters and e-bikes are perfect for shorter journeys, and Bolt Drive can be used for longer journeys where ride-hailing is not suitable.

In past campaigns like Cities For People, Not Cars, Bolt has highlighted how urban environments have been transformed, showcasing historic photos of European landmarks filled with cars and newer photos from the same locations showing fewer cars and more space for people

Swedish Plumbing Company Abandons Vans for Professional Ebikes

Cyklande Rörmokaren is a plumbing company in Stockholm, Sweden. Their headquarters are in a former blacksmith forge in the oldest parts of Stockholm. They are an ambitious company that aim to soon grow to other cities like Gothenburg, Malmoe and Oslo.

According to the founder Hugo Wolgers, their rapid growth can be attributed to his team of creative problem solvers. And one reason that these professional plumbers flock to his company, is the fact that they for the most part get to and from their work sites on bicycles and ebikes.

If you knew Swedish, you would already know this since the name of the company, Cyklande Rörmokaren, literally translates as “The Biking Plumber”.

In the spirit of “right-sizing” – picking the cleanest vehicle that gets the job done, any heavy materials are delivered in advance and then the plumbers and their tools arrive on their bikes.

Hugo says “we got really tired of having to sit in traffic and we also realized that we could arrive both quicker and more environmentally friendly on a bike. That we are in continuous motion also means we arrive feeling more alert. Leaving the car behind benefits the customer, us and the environment.”

Finding the Perfect Ebike for Plumbing

Since the founding, the company has tested many brands of bicycles and electric bikes and have now zeroed in on their new main vehicle, the Keego Mobility KG4. Built mainly to service delivery couriers with a low center of gravity, 65 kg load capacity, 100 km range and all sturdy components, the ebike also happens to be perfect for the plumbers and their tools.

“We tested the KG4 for a couple of weeks. Turns out our toolboxes click in perfectly on the rear rack and if we need any other items they fit in the front box. We are now converting our fleet to KG4s because of great handling, load capacity and low service and maintenance costs,” says Wolgers.

Wolgers then took a KG4 on a 280-kilometer ride to the (relatively) nearby city of Motala to speak at a conference on using bikes in logistics. To get all the way and since he spent the night camping in the woods, he brought one extra set of fully charged batteries with him and also stopped for lunch at a restaurant where he could also get a quick charge.

Keego Mobility, Swede From Taiwan

As so many other bike companies, Keego Mobility hails from Taiwan, but Keego was co-founded by Swedish serial entrepreneur, Elias Ek, from the northern city of Sundsvall.

Ek moved from Sweden to the US in 1994 to study and then moved to Taiwan in 2000. He has founded several companies, but Keego was the first one to also set up an office in Sweden.

“We now run all of our EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) operations from our office in Sweden,” says Ek. “For me it is really great to now have a professional connection to my home country. And on our way of helping all the world’s 30 million couriers to choose green and clean ebikes, we are proud of also working with Hugo and his fantastic plumbers.”

Keego Mobilitys medgrundare Elias Ek med sin KG4 i Taipei, Taiwan

Couriers from companies like Uber Eats, Getir, Foodora, Foodpanda and many other leading delivery companies around the world are using their KG4s in their daily deliveries.

Magnus Wall, Sales Director EMEA for Keego Mobility, has long experience in the bike industry. He adds, “by enabling thousands of delivery couriers and professional craftsmen to switch to strong, professional ebikes, we can save enormous amounts of carbon as well as cut down on noise pollution in our cities. For every 33 km we ride on a bike instead of in a van, we save 1 kg of carbon emissions, so the benefits are huge.”

Look out for the environmentally friendly plumbers on their blue Keego Mobility ebikes in Gamla Stan and other parts of Stockholm

Bolt launches shared electric bike service in Wexford during #BikeWeek

The mobility platform Bolt, in partnership with Wexford County Council, has launched its shared electric bike service in Wexford today. The launch is especially timely since Bike Week is taking place across the country May 13th-21st. Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling from the National Transport Authority.

As part of the launch and Bike Week, Bolt is offering each customer a free ride of up to 30 minutes*. The offer can be redeemed by inputting ‘BIKEWEEK’ into the ‘Promotions’ tab of the Bolt app from midnight 13th May – 23:59 21st May 2023. This gesture is intended not only to allow Wexford residents to become familiar with the service but also to encourage them to consider whether they could swap their private car for a combination of shared and public transport. This supports Bolt’s mission of helping to make cities for people, not cars.

Bolt has no unlock fee, and customers pay only for the minutes they’ve used, at €0.18 per minute.

Parking will be controlled via geofencing and will be located at 40+ clearly marked, convenient locations across town, including ALDI stores, Wexford General Hospital and Wexford Park GAA Stadium. Additional locations can be introduced, subject to popularity, feedback from the council and local users, or nominations from local businesses. Operations will be overseen by a local bike shop which ensures local knowledge and expertise.

The inclusion of the pick-up and drop-off locations within the app will ensure users can see where bikes are located and where they can safely and responsibly finish their journey. Other local community groups and businesses such as WWETB, YouthTrain and Waters Technologies Ireland Ltd., have supported the roll out of this scheme and provided space to ensure their users and visitors can choose this sustainable option.

Service features

The firm is taking several steps to ensure riders and pedestrians stay safe. For those not yet familiar with bicycles with pedal assisted motors, there is ‘Beginner Mode’. This limits the top speed of the bicycle to 15 km/h. Once ‘Beginner Mode’ is turned off, the bicycles have a maximum speed of 25 km/h.

Another way in which Bolt is allowing citizens time to get acquainted with the new service is the gradual roll-out of the bikes. 50 will be initially deployed. The size of the fleet will fluctuate depending on demand to ensure that the roll-out happens in a gradual and sustainable way across Wexford.

Bolt already operates a successful shared bike service in Sligo and Kilkenny. Since launching in the summer of 2022, over 170,000 km have been travelled on Bolt’s electric bikes. A survey amongst users revealed this means the service has saved 24,000 km of car trips in Ireland to date, equating to approximately 2,500 kg of CO2.

Bolt Operations Manager for Rentals in Ireland, John Buckley, said: “I’m excited to launch our electric bike rental in Wexford, and what great timing in the midst of Bike Week.

“Recent research carried out by Bolt revealed that only one-quarter of Irish drivers are likely to give up their car in the next five years*. We’re confident that providing shared transport solutions will help to convince more people to ditch the car and choose a more enjoyable and sustainable way to travel.”

Wexford County Council Cycling & Walking Officer Claire Goodwin  said, “Wexford County Council is delighted to offer local residents and visitors a sustainable transport option in the town. We see a real enthusiasm for making the change away from private car use if there is a convenient alternative. With the introduction of Bolt’s eBikes on a pilot basis into our town, we hope many people will change how they travel where possible.”

Bolt’s eBikes hit the East Coast with Wexford & Bray launches

Bolt, the European mobility champion, will launch two new shared electric bike schemes in Wexford Town and Bray in Spring 2023. These schemes add to Bolt’s successful existing operations in Sligo and Kilkenny, bringing its total Irish fleet to 400 electric bikes across 4 regional towns.

There are 200 electric bikes earmarked for the year-long pilots with up to 100 in each town. Bray will form the first Irish location where the Bolt app provides both taxis and eBikes, a multimodal offering that has proved highly valuable across European cities.

Since launching shared mobility schemes in the summer of 2022 in Sligo and Kilkenny, over 105,000 km have been travelled on Bolt’s eBikes. With surveyed users opting for this sustainable mode of transport over cars, Bolt schemes have saved 14,800 km of car trips in Ireland to date, approximately 1,545 kg of CO2*.

Bolt has previously earmarked up to €5m in its bid to roll out electric bike operations across Irish cities and towns with up to 2000 bikes available to deploy immediately as required.

The Government recently committed to promoting e-mobility solutions in cities and towns and will be relying on such schemes to provide essential alternatives for commuters as Demand Management solutions are considered in the coming year.

Cathaoirleach of Bray Municipal District, Cllr Erika Doyle, said,  ‘With a number of cycle schemes planned for the area, such as linking the stunning seafront and harbour area with neighbouring Dun Laoghaire Rathdown and a cycle link planned with Greystones, Bray is the perfect location for a shared electric bike scheme. Aside from being a sustainable alternative to car trips, electric bikes can offer a more accessible option for many. They can also assist when tackling some of Bray’s hilly stretches. The simpler and more convenient we can make accessing electric bikes, the more likely people are to use them. I’m delighted that both local residents and visitors to the town will soon have the option to avail of Bolt’s eBikes.”

Claire Goodwin, Cycling & Walking Officer from Wexford County Council said, “Wexford County Council is delighted to provide local residents and visitors with a sustainable mode of transport. We are seeing a real enthusiasm for making the change from private car use if there is a convenient and affordable alternative. With the introduction of Bolt’s Bikes on a trial basis for Wexford town, we hope people will try them out and perhaps change how they travel, where possible”

Bolt Operations Manager for Rentals in Ireland, John Buckley, said, “We’re very excited to take Bolt to the East Coast, and we’re working closely with Wicklow and Wexford County Councils to roll out the service as soon as possible. Bolt’s shared electric bike offerings in both Sligo and Kilkenny are proving extremely popular and our user surveys show our eBikes are reducing the reliance on private cars and supporting the National Climate Action Plan. One user has clocked up over 400 rides alone and we expect to see similar levels of  utilisation on the East Coast!”

Bolt is in talks with several other councils keen to accelerate their active travel services in line with the National Development Plan and the Climate Action Plan. Bolt is keen to add electric scooters to its operations when legislation is in place later in 2023. Electric bikes and electric scooters cover a fuller range of travel options across most European cities and could help significantly move Irish transport users away from private car use.

Bolt is a leading European mobility champion operating a range of services including electric bikes, electric scooters, ride-hailing and car clubs for over 100 million people across 500 cities in 50 countries in Europe and Africa. The company currently operates ride-hailing taxi services in Dublin and Cork and is seeking to bring electric bikes, and in time, electric scooters to cities and towns across Ireland.

FREE NOW and other providers call on the Minister to ensure the proposed legislation for e-scooters receives its full consideration and passage over the coming weeks

A number of e-scooter and e-bike operators, potential operators and mobility platforms, including Ireland’s lead ride hailing app and multi-mobility provider FREE NOW, have today sent a letter to Transport Minister Eamon Ryan calling on him to see that the proposed legislation for e-scooters receives its full consideration and passage over the coming weeks.

The Programme for Government- published last year- included a pledge from the Government to ‘legislate for e-scooters and e-bikes’.  And on February 1 this year, the Government approved the drafting of legislation to allow for their regulation.  One of the main provisions of the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill is to legislate for the use of e-scooters, and this will ultimately allow them to be used legally and safely in a public place.

Today, FREE NOW are amongst a group of operators, potential operators and mobility platforms who have written to the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD to see that the Bill receives its full consideration and passage over the coming weeks in order to allow passengers to enjoy the benefits of e-scooters throughout the late summer and early autumn months.

They are asking the Government to “commit to a timeline to implement this important legislation”.  In their letter, which is attached, they also state:  “We believe that it is vital that legislation is prioritised and finalised as soon as possible to allow all relevant processes to take place to ensure we have scooters deployed in the late summer / early autumn months.”

As we all know this has been going on long enough now and nothing has been done so lets see what happens in the near future…

The letter sent..

Dear Minister

We are writing to you as a group of e-scooter and e-bike operators, potential operators  and mobility platforms. We are all hugely supportive of the work being undertaken by  the Government to legislate for e-scooters as part of the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous)  Bill.

We were delighted to see that it is contained in the Summer Legislative Programme.  Our ask is to ensure that the Bill receives its full consideration and passage over the  coming weeks in order to allow passengers to enjoy the benefits of e-scooters in the  Summer and Autumn. Multi-modality will be a hugely important element of our re

opening, ensuring that people have a range of transport options available to them. We  would ask the government to commit to a timeline to implement this important  legislation.

E-scooters have been found to be a safe and enjoyable transport mode. Many of the  signatories to this letter have experience in other countries and understand the need  to ensure that safety of passengers and other road users must be paramount. We  believe that it is vital that legislation is prioritised and finalised as soon as possible to  allow all relevant processes to take place to ensure we have scooters deployed in the  late summer / early autumn months.

As the pandemic draws to a close we are keen to continue to support a safe re opening. We are eager to work with government, regulators and other stakeholders to  ensure that scooters are a safe, reliable and enjoyable option for passengers.

GreenAer e-bike retailer expands to meet growing demand. #GreenAer #ebike

GreenAer, the Irish owned e-bike retailer, has announced significant expansion plans through its network of stores. The company is planning its first ever dedicated Cargo Bike-only outlet in Dublin following a surge in interest from both commercial customers and consumers in renewable forms of transport.

GreenAer currently operates three stores in Dublin, Mullingar, Cork. The company has experienced significant growth during its three years in operation, with sales revenue increasing four-fold in 2020 with over 1,000 e-bikes sold. GreenAer currently employs 15 staff, and expects to add a further 15 over the next three years. The company is looking to open a new store in Galway this year but will also expand its footprint abroad with partnerships in Paris and Barcelona.

To meet this growing demand, GreenAer is also announcing plans for new retail premises in Dublin in addition to the Cargo Bike hub. The increase in demand is being linked by the company to a significant investment in cycling infrastructure by local authorities, with an estimated €360 million being invested nationwide in the next four years.

GreenAer is the leading e-bike retailer in Ireland for brands including Raleigh, Haibike, Riese and Muller, Orbea, Moustache, Urban Arrow, Stromer, Gocycle and Hercules.

Lisa Redden and Olivier Vander Elst of GreenAer.

Olivier Vander Elst of GreenAer says, “The increase in sales is reflective of the fact that so many people have taken up cycling in the past 12 months, and are now looking at alternative, greener forms of transport for their daily commute. E-bikes and eCargo bikes are the perfect solution to the Covid-19 era of living.

“There are predictions that the European e-bike market will triple within the next five years, and through its hard working sales team, GreenAer has already established itself as the market leader in Ireland. Every store in the network has reported exponential interest in e-bikes, and this further expansion will allow us to meet that growing demand in the months and years ahead.”

GreenAer’s new CargoBike store will allow the company to expand its bespoke solution service for business customers. The company already supplies CargoBikes to a number of commercial customers, and is contracted by An Post as its “last mile” vehicle and service provider. As a result, An Post can boast the largest fleet of electrically assisted tricycles in operation in Europe.
