Mobile data usage surges during weekend events in Ireland

eir, Ireland’s leading telecommunications company, announced a milestone that they carried over 50 terabytes (TB) of data across its event mobile sites last weekend as a series of high-profile events took place across Ireland.

From the excitement of the Longitude Festival to the spectacular Taylor Swift at the Aviva and Shania Twain concerts at Malahide, the vibrant Dublin Pride Parade, the family-friendly Kaleidoscope Festival, and the iconic matches at Croke Park, eir’s network delivered seamless connectivity to thousands of customers.

To put this achievement in perspective, 50 TB of data is the equivalent of streaming 50,000 hours of video, which translates to non-stop watching for over five years.

On Sunday night, during Taylor Swift’s concert, twice as much data was carried over the eir mobile network compared to the Six Nations decider at the Aviva Stadium on March 16th, both of which were sold-out events. This highlights the significant difference in mobile data usage between Swifties and rugby fans.

Additionally, the data usage during the Taylor Swift concert was double that of the FAI Cup final in November and triple that of the Leinster versus Munster game in the same month. The surge in data usage was primarily driven by extensive video recording, sharing, and live streaming activities.

Ruth McGuinness wins Microsoft Power Women Award 2024

Microsoft has revealed that Ruth McGuinness, Head of Data and AI at Kainos, headquartered in Belfast has won the Microsoft Power Women Award 2024 in Ireland.

The Microsoft Power Women Awards are part of Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to inspire, promote and invest in a new generation of women tech talent. The awards shine a spotlight on some of the amazing women spearheading greater diversity and inclusion throughout the Microsoft Partner network.

In the second year of the awards, the programme expanded its reach covering Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, with nearly 400 applications from exceptional women who have made significant contributions to technology, and diversity and inclusion.

McGuinness is a prominent leader in the field of AI, overseeing one of Ireland’s largest AI teams with 150 members generating millions of pounds annually through delivery of AI technology programmes in both public and private sector organisations across Ireland, the UK, Europe, and North America. Her focus includes developing AI tooling that is robust, explainable, and trustworthy and advocating for ethical AI adoption.

Passionate about bridging the gap between academic research and industry, McGuinness is also the primary industry partner of the AI Research Centre (AIRC) at Ulster University, supporting 100+ AI researchers in trusted AI applications. She also supports the development of more diverse AI talent as a curator of AI CON, Ireland’s largest annual AI conference, while being a strong advocate for the robust regulation of AI across other public forums, both local and international.

Bank of Ireland is recruiting for 100 technology roles to support digital projects across the Group. The roles will help drive some of the Group’s most important technology projects including new customer features on digital channels, protecting customers against fraud, and advanced data analytics.

A fifth of office workers in Ireland have access to the company data of a previous employer

HCSa leading IT, cybersecurity, and digital transformation services company, is today announcing the results of new research which found that nearly a fifth (19%) of office workers in Ireland still have access to the company data of a previous employer. Of these, 48% use that previous employer’s data to help them in their current job.

The research of 503 office workers based in Ireland was carried out by Censuswide on behalf of HCS, with the support of Fortinet, a global leader driving the evolution of cybersecurity and the convergence of networking and security. The aim of the survey was to explore office workers’ attitudes to, and experiences of, cybersecurity at work. The full results and analysis of the survey are available as part of a new report by HCS called ‘HCS CyberWatch Report: Insights into 2024’s Cyber Threats’.

The study also highlighted the risk that current employees can pose to data security within organisations, if effective access controls are not in place. Of those surveyed, 43% say that in the job they have now, they have access to privileged or sensitive company data that they shouldn’t, and 52% of these admit that they access it. It is perhaps not surprising, then, that 61% of office workers don’t trust their employer to protect their own personal data.

Meanwhile, 15% of office workers say that their organisation’s cybersecurity measures prevent them from doing their job effectively. Some of those surveyed are finding ways around this, with 22% of office workers admitting to having bypassed internet access controls implemented by their organisation by using tools such as a web proxy to access blocked sites.

When it comes to working arrangements, it appears that there is still a way to go in making employees feel secure and supported outside of the office. Almost a fifth (19%) of those who work remotely or on a hybrid basis feel more vulnerable to security risks when working from home, while 27% feel they have less technical support. Some 48% of remote or hybrid workers access their company network via a secure VPN, while the same percentage (48%) use home Wi-Fi.

Dan Hegarty, Head of Sales, HCS, said: “These findings highlight the urgent need for organisations to proactively manage access permissions and implement robust access policies. In doing so, businesses can mitigate the risk of unauthorised data exposure and protect their valuable assets against potential breaches. In addition, providing ongoing awareness training can empower employees to play an active role in protecting company data. Not only will this bolster the security of sensitive customer and company information; it will uphold trust with employees regarding the safeguarding of their own personal data.

“It’s concerning to see that employees are finding ways to circumnavigate organisational security measures. Organisations need to ensure that the cybersecurity infrastructure in place is robust, while also setting out clear protocols for employees. Meanwhile, it’s crucial that employees feel supported when working outside of the office. A well-defined remote or hybrid work strategy should have cybersecurity at its core to enable employees to work securely and efficiently, with speedy remediation in the event of an issue to minimise downtime.”

One-in-five businesses in Ireland creating new jobs to handle AI

Expleo today announces new research which finds that 98% of business leaders in Ireland believe AI will have transformed their industry within the next three years. In response, one-in-five (19%) businesses have already created new positions and roles within their company to help them to deploy and manage AI.

Expleo’s new report, ‘Integrating AI: Navigating the next wave of business transformation’, comprises insights from 100 key decision-makers at large- and mid-sized businesses in Ireland, and a further 703 from France, Germany and the UK, to provide a strategic overview of AI adoption and the challenges organisations face when deploying AI.

Adoption of AI gains momentum

Expleo’s research points to a clear shift in perspectives of AI, moving beyond a technology of promise to one of business necessity as enterprises start to demand more from their deployments. This is characterised by four key trends:

  • Deploying AI an urgent priority: Whilst only 26% of businesses here have already deployed AI tools, a further 68% have them in development, under consideration, or plan to deploy them in the coming 12 months. The survey shows that while almost all business leaders in Ireland believe AI will transform their industry in the next three years, just 47% (versus an average of 56% in other markets surveyed) believe AI is currently having a transformative impact on their own organisation and its processes.

 

  • AI will have a real financial impact: The increased urgency to deploy AI at scale is closely linked to a desire to see returns, particularly in areas that directly correlate to the bottom line. Better time-to-market, financial gains, and improved quality (all 94%) were cited as the top three measurements of ROI for AI deployments amongst businesses in Ireland.

 

  • Scaling AI remains a challenge: Despite a clear impetus to begin realising ROI from AI deployments, obstacles remain. Chief amongst these for organisations in Ireland are technical integrations with existing tools (34%) and the imperative to control costs (33%). However, enterprises in Ireland are less likely to foresee barriers to AI adoption than other locations – more than a quarter (26%) do not see any major barriers to deploying the technology, compared to an average of 17% in other markets surveyed.

 

  • Proven expertise is in demand: The complex integration landscape has put AI skills in high demand. 55% of businesses in Ireland are turning to outside expertise to support their deployments today. Equally, more than half (54%) are investing in AI training for employees.

A suite of integrated Quality Assurance and Health & Safety forms, checklists and inspections will all be delivered to Quantum by Zutec to ensure data is digitised and can be easily collected in a consistent way and housing and apartments are built to the company’s high standards.
