emporia TOUCHsmart.3 Review

The emporia TOUCHsmart.3 is not a flagship smartphone, nor is it a basic “talk and text” feature phone. It carves out a unique and necessary niche: a clamshell (flip) phone that combines the simplicity and tactile feel of a physical keyboard with the modern connectivity required today, primarily instant messaging and flip phones are back with a bang and this one looks nice and is well built only the front display could have had some use but not this time.

It is clearly targeted at the senior market or those seeking a “dumbphone” experience who still need essential smart features like WhatsApp which is like other massaging apps more commonly used now and a growing trend with senior users of smartphones.

The TOUCHsmart.3 is built around a “best-of-both-worlds” design philosophy, blending hardware and software elements for maximum accessibility.

The most distinguishing factor is the flip design coupled with dual input:

  1. Physical Keypad: Features large, clearly labeled keys that are easy to press, making dialing and basic texting straightforward.
  2. Touchscreen: The internal 3.47-inch display is a full touchscreen, allowing users to navigate apps like WhatsApp and maps just like a small smartphone, you would be forgiven to forget it is actually a touch screen which I forgot several times but its cool and you should avail of it.

This combination addresses the common frustration of needing a full keyboard for dialing but a touchscreen for modern app interaction. Flipping open the phone also automatically answers a call like the good oul days with flip phones.

Unlike many basic feature phones, the TOUCHsmart.3 supports 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0. Crucially, it runs on a simplified Android OS, giving it the power to run essential modern communication apps.

Emporia highlights the dedicated shortcut key for messaging (WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram), recognizing that staying in touch often means more than just SMS and voice calls.

Yays

  • Ease of Use: The large buttons and the charging cradle are highly praised by the target audience (seniors).
  • SOS Function: The dedicated emergency button offers peace of mind by contacting up to five designated contacts instantly which is a key USP with emporia devices all round
  • Build Quality: It has an IP44 rating and generally feels sturdy and well-built.
  • Accessibility: Hearing aid compatibility (M4/T4) is a thoughtful inclusion.

Nays

  • Performance: The hardware (2GB RAM, MediaTek P35) can lead to some lagging especially when using complex apps or trying to multitask but this device is not targetted at such a user but tested anyway.
  • Battery Life: The 1,400 mAh battery capacity is relatively small for an Android-based device, possibly needing to charge it daily, particularly if using messaging apps frequently.
  • Limited Customization: Being an adapted Android device, it can be restrictive in accessing deeper settings or using alternative launchers.
  • Internal Storage: The 16GB internal memory is limited, although it is expandable up to 64GB via MicroSD.
  • Camera Quality: The 8 MP main camera is functional but delivers only basic photo quality, which is typical for a device in this segment but perfoms well in daytime scenarios.

The emporia TOUCHsmart.3 is an excellent choice for a very specific user: someone who values the tangible simplicity of a flip phone and physical buttons but cannot live without a key messaging app like WhatsApp to stay connected with family.

It’s the ultimate compromise phone—less complex than a full smartphone, but far more connected than a standard feature phone.

If your priority is simplicity, ease of calling/texting, safety, and a dedicated WhatsApp button, the TOUCHsmart.3 is a highly recommendable device.

However, if you require a phone for heavy internet browsing, demanding apps, long-lasting battery life without daily charging, or taking high-quality photos, you might find the performance and battery limitations frustrating but previous flip phone users of old will feel comfortable as they where the same before and again aimed at a targt demographic.

Safety, Spares & Support

Emporia’s decision to fit a dedicated Panic button offers tangible safety for older users or those with medical needs. The Panic button can trigger calls,  with customisation options for rapid help. Unlike most manufacturers, Emporia supports direct user ordering of spares, such as batteries (priced around €18), via their website. This approach improves long-term ownership and reduces dependence on service centres, which often charge premium rates for repairs.

Usability & Practicality

Emporia positions its devices for seniors, those less familiar with touchscreens, or anyone seeking longevity without unnecessary complexity.. The printed manual with QR codes and clear instructions stands out as refreshingly user friendly in a landscape dominated by online-only guides.

Performance & Weaknesses

The MT6765X Octa-Core processor is strictly entry-level – adequate for calls, web, and social apps, but does not support 5G networks and will struggle with gaming and graphics-intensive apps. Screen transitions aren’t as fluid as on mid-range or high-end devices, so power users may notice lag. Battery life, however, is excellent for its class, and the customisability of the hardware (spare parts, manual battery replacement) gives the Smart ME7 an edge for those who value reliability over raw horsepower.

The camera setup, typical for value-focused phones, delivers passable results for snapshots and video calls but won’t compete with flagship handsets. The IP54 rating gives basic splash resistance but is not suitable for prolonged outdoor use in rain or direct water.

Brand Background

Techbuzz Ireland has reviewed a variety of  Emporia releases over the past decade, including the SMART.6 lite, emporia 313, JOY-LTE, WATCHjoy Smartwatch, TOUCHsmart.3, and others. Emporia was founded in Austria in 1991 and develops products for the UK, Ireland, and Europe, with a design presence in Austria and Germany and manufacturing based in Shenzhen, China.

Final Verdict

The Emporia Smart ME7 delivers excellent battery life, unique safety features, and practical support options, truly aligning with the brand’s focus on simplicity and reliability. While the lack of 5G and the entry-level processor set real limits for gaming or heavy multitasking, these are honest trade-offs for a phone designed with real-world durability and user-friendliness in mind. The honest addition of spares ordering, a physical manual, and the Panic button make the ME7 stand out in a crowded market.

Recommended for: Seniors, first-time smartphone users, or anyone seeking a robust, uncomplicated handset with strong support for repairs and maintenance.

SuperEQ A200 Hybrid ANC Hi-Res Headphones Review

The SuperEQ A200 Over Ear Headphones Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Hi-Res Audio 6-Mic AI ENC is their latest product to hit the market at an affordable price but do they drop out with how they sound and what is on offer?

These also come with a removable mic so for those on calls at home or the office or even gamers will be delighted keeping these true to form being hybrid as many folk today use their headphones for both office work and gaming along with enjoying movies and music etc from the smartphone or tablet.

The headphones themselves are comfortable to wear long term and the cups cover the ears giving some passive noise isolation out of the box the cups are plush and deep and the headband also offers comfort with a soft plush finish, the rest of the headphones is finished in a matt black and do not show fingerprints.

The cups twist and pivot so will sit nicely on your head with no clamping effect and the arms can be adjusted without the ratchet effect we are use to however they do not fold up for travel etc but this is fine.

On the left side we have all the controls and this time around not seen too often is a multifucntional wheel for several actions and another button and also the USB-C port for the mic we spoke about earlier.

There is an app however limited in functionality but does enough for the price point how you get it will vary as on Android but you can download directly on iOS. You can see the screenshots below and more in the video review after that.

The sound is decent to be fair and decently loud and there is several EQs in the app and you can create your own too and save them. ANC is more prevalent in a quieter environment and that is where you will get the full potential from these headphones

You have mode switch and hearing protection on board and a timed shutdown in the app and you can also reset the headphones if required to do so.

The sound overall is loud punchy and fine with highs lows and mids and there is nice bass in there too especially on bass drops, you have noise reduction and transparency mode there too, no lag latency noted or tinny sound when at full volume making them a decent pair of headphones for the money.

Battery life is also quite good here with fast charge on deck allowing you 7hrs for 5 mins charge and up to 100 hours with no ANC and around 60 with ANC though user settings will give a different time for everyone..

Doro Aurora A30 Seniors Phone Review

Smartphones are aplenty these days for the seniors in our lives however some offer no help for those adopting technology in their later years and some do the Doro Aurora A30 does both as it offers a simple UI to work from and the typical standard Android menu giving those who want to learn the option too or just keep it simple. You can check out the first look and unboxing here.

The phone itself is well built with a 6.1 inch screen which might be a tad too big for some however those who like their media on their device this is ideal. It is on the slightly thicker side again this is not for all but some prefer a phone they can hold and know it is in their pocket too and by that I mean you can feel the device unlike other feature phones and dumb phones etc.

On first looking at the device myself it does feel and look solid there is your volume keys on the left and your power on/off key and quick action key on the right side. On the front of the device there is three physical buttons which are nicely shaped and make it easy for calls and return to home however once opened you can also have a choice of gestures or touch based options which is the norm now on Android devices.

On the back of the phone you have the camera array and the Doro secure button this is how you can contact your relatives once you have numbers assigned on the device. You also have your flash and speaker here too. The main camera is 50Mp which is plenty you can see the image and video gallery below for sample and you be the judge it is a decent all round camera for the target market.

Doro Aurora A30 images and video samples

Under the hood we have decent specs on board for those wondering, this is not boasting top of the range specs however plenty to keep anyone going with their daily tasks, as a power user myself I had no issues with doing what I do which is much more than your average user or senior it is fair to say and it worked fine over my test period.

I tested out the 4GB RAM 128GB model which runs Android 14 with MT6769Z (G85) chipset which I consider mid range and as said it performs well for the target market here. The app I use for videos had a hard time trying to upload a 4K video but when converted to 1080p for the image and video samples it was fine, again the target market would not use such apps but just to give you an idea.

Stand out features one the Doro Aurora A30 are ClearSound which is also compatible with hearing aids The Doro Secure Button which enables you to assign contacts for care etc, The menu structure which keeps it simple, each time you add an app for example it will prompt you to have on your home screen, You also have biometrics on board with Face unlock and there is theft protection and finally you have two tiers of support including Team Viewer as Seen Below and how it works.

Overall this is not a bad phone that will be suitable for any senior to get started on the smartphone buzz, there is a trend that people want to come off such devices which is fine and there is also a trend of those wanting more than feature phones but are afraid of the convoluted mess Android delivers but this offers a fresh easy to use UI with tutorials on board making life simple, after all not all seniors are not capable of enjoying a phone to the max but there is some coming out of retirement from dumb phones and feature phones and I know some that suffer with FOMO, check out the videos below for more and what to expect.

It’s All in the Gesture – DoorBird Presents the New Contact-Free Call Button Module

DoorBird launches another innovation: The new contact-free call button module enables doors to be opened without having to touch them. This technology was developed to promote safe, simple, and aseptic use, and not just in public areas. Ringing the doorbell by waving is the perfect solution for any building with a high level of foot traffic. Depending on the configuration, a gesture in front of the door intercom system can either ring the doorbell or open the door instantaneously.

A germ-free environment is critically important in public facilities such as hospitals, medical practices, and nursing homes to limit and prevent health risks for people. An IP video door station with a contact-free call button module can be useful in such places. Visitors can intuitively ring the doorbell by making a simple hand gesture and are also given direct visual feedback from the module.

The intelligent motion sensor detects both hand movements as well as a hand coming within 10 cm / 4 inch of the module. This also allows you to ring the doorbell even when holding a package in your hand, for instance. Like a classic DoorBird call button, the module performs actions that can be freely configured on all DoorBird door stations, such as sending out a call signal as a push notification, triggering a relay or HTTP(S) command, or starting a SIP call.

The contact-free call button module is compatible with DoorBird D21x series’ IP video door stations and is available to order now. The scope of delivery includes the sensor panel cover with information provided in German, English, Spanish, French, and Italian.
