NBA AND AWS ANNOUNCE NEW MULTI-YEAR PARTNERSHIP

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a multi-year partnership to power the league’s next generation of innovation as AWS will become the Official Cloud and Cloud AI Partner of the NBA and its affiliate leagues, including the WNBA, NBA G League, Basketball Africa League and NBA Take-Two Media.

As part of the partnership, the NBA and AWS will launch NBA Inside the Game powered by AWS, a new basketball intelligence platform that will turn billions of data points into compelling insights and interactive experiences, reimagining how fans engage with the game of basketball worldwide.

Built on AWS’s industry-leading AI infrastructure, the platform will introduce a suite of features that enhance live broadcasts and elevate fan experiences across the NBA App, NBA.com, and the league’s social channels.

“Partnering with AWS provides us with an opportunity to elevate the live game experience through innovation and offer fans a deeper understanding of the game of basketball for years to come,” said NBA Executive Vice President and Head of Media Operations and Technology Ken DeGennaro. “AWS has a proven track record of delivering unique statistical insights and offering transformative experiences that will resonate with NBA fans around the world.”

“At AWS, we’re excited by the NBA’s vision to push the boundaries of what’s possible in sports,” said Francessca Vasquez, Vice President of Professional Services & Agentic AI at AWS. “This partnership will showcase how cloud and AI can reimagine the game of basketball – from generating new insights to creating experiences that bring fans closer to the game they love. Together, we’re delivering technology that not only enhances live broadcasts and digital platforms, but also transforms how players, coaches, and fans understand basketball.”

AI-Powered Advanced Stats

The NBA will leverage AWS’s AI capabilities to provide fans with live stats and comprehensive analytics during games. This new advanced statistics platform processes the NBA’s player tracking data, which analyzes the movements of 29 data points per player using machine learning and AI to contextualize in-game developments and generate real-time insights. Fans can deepen their understanding of the game by accessing new statistics via the NBA App, NBA.com and during live NBA games, including during NBA on Prime broadcasts.

Throughout the 2025-26 season, the NBA and AWS will introduce new AI-powered stats that capture aspects of basketball performance that have not been measured previously, starting with:

  • Defensive Box ScoreReimagining Basketball’s Fundamental Metric
Defensive Box Score quantifies individual defensive contributions that traditional statistics cannot measure. AI algorithms detect which defender is responsible for each offensive player in real-time. Once the primary defender is determined, the traditional box score can now be enhanced by identifying the defender at the time each stat was recorded. Additional new metrics like ball pressure, double teams and defensive switches can now be viewed and tallied as well.
  • Shot DifficultyThe Science of Shooting

Shot Difficulty transcends traditional make-or-miss statistics to evaluate every aspect of each shot attempt. The difficulty of attempted shots will be quantified with new stats such as Expected Field Goal % which takes into account various factors such as the shooter’s orientation and setup, defensive contest details related to pressure, interference, and each player’s positioning on the court. This new statistic gives fans a deeper appreciation for the skill and strategy behind every scoring attempt.

  • GravityQuantifying the Invisible Impact
Gravity showcases what coaches and analysts have observed for years – how certain players create advantages for teammates simply by being on the court, even without touching the ball. This new stat measures the level of attention a player receives from the defense, including how closely they’re guarded with or without the ball, to quantify the amount of space they create for their teammates. This revolutionary system processes optical tracking data 60 times per second, using custom neural networks to analyze how defenders react to specific players, while factoring in real-time game context and historical data.

Transforming Basketball Intelligence

NBA Inside the Game powered by AWS will also feature a first-of-its-kind technology called “Play Finder,” which uses AI to analyze and understand player movements across thousands of games.  Utilizing AWS services such as Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker, the feature will enable instant search and retrieval of similar plays, laying the foundation for future generative AI integrations built on player tracking data.  Play Finder will help fans and broadcasters learn common offensive strategies and explore deeper insights by combining play results with advanced analytics.

A real-time alert system within Play Finder will enable commentators to instantly provide historical context and strategic insights, making every live game more engaging, educational, and insightful for viewers.  NBA teams will have direct access to the ML models powering Play Finder to improve their front office and coaching workflows.

Future iterations of Play Finder will allow fans to explore basketball strategy with unprecedented depth on the NBA App.

Global Fan Engagement

The NBA App, NBA.com and NBA League Pass, delivering year-round NBA coverage and programming to fans around the world, will run on AWS. Through this partnership with AWS, the NBA will accelerate basketball’s growth worldwide by offering fans new and unique opportunities to understand team strategy and the concepts that lead to execution on the court. Additionally, the NBA and AWS will deliver in-language content and personalized experiences to fans across platforms.

The NBA’s partnership with AWS broadens its strategic relationship with Amazon. This season marks the start of Prime Video’s landmark 11-year media rights agreement with 67 regular-season NBA matchups streaming on Prime Video globally, and a suite of new interactive features set to debut.  The first night of the NBA on Prime will feature a doubleheader on Friday, Oct. 24 during the first week of the season, with the Celtics visiting the Knicks (7:30 p.m. ET) and the Lakers hosting the Timberwolves (10 p.m. ET) in two rematches from the NBA Playoffs 2025.

Turning Bookie Offers Into Bigger Wins by Playing Smart

There is nothing better than a bookie offer that seems too good to be true. Sometimes, bookies will run offers and promotions that can feel like free money, whether this is enhanced odds, free bets, or any other kind of promotion. Bookies will frequently use offers as a way to attract new customers, so it is always wise to keep a lookout and compare different offers online. You can often turn bookie offers into even bigger wins when you are strategic with your approach. This post will show you how to play it smart so that you can maximize wins and get better value without chasing losses.

Compare Offers Online

First, you should take time to compare offers online. Every week, bookies will offer various promotions and offers on sports and other markets. You can compare different offers from a wide range of online bookmakers at places like https://www.roger.com/offers/, which can make it quick and easy to find the best offers each week. These often involve free spins with no deposit for new customers, which gives you the fun experience of playing slot games without having to risk your own money.

Read The Terms & Conditions

It might not be the most fun aspect of football betting, but you should always read the Ts and Cs. There are always conditions with bookie offers, so make sure you understand these before betting. Key considerations include:

  • Minimum odds requirement
  • Wagering or turnover requirement
  • Minimum/maximum stake
  • Competitions/markets included/excluded
  • Expiry dates

Strategise

Once you have found bookies’ offers to take advantage of, you want to adopt a strategic approach. For example, you could use free bets on bigger odds outcomes that you think are underrated. There is no risk involved with free bets, so there is no harm in taking a punt. You can also use matched-bet-style logic by finding hedging opportunities that mean you lock in a profit or minimize losses no matter the outcome. Crucially, make sure that you use your head and do not let an offer tempt you just for the sake of playing if you have to stake your own money.

Manage Risk & Bankroll

Finally, you need to be smart when it comes to sports betting. As with regular betting, you need to manage your bankroll and set limits to avoid overspending. Additionally, make sure that you do not chase losses and know when to walk away – sports betting should always be for fun. You can also reduce risk by diversifying – instead of putting all of your promotions on one large bet, spread the promotions across multiple matches or markets.

Bookies’ offers can be a great way to increase wins, but you need to be smart when it comes to maximising these offers and reducing risk. By comparing different bookies’ offers online, understanding the Ts and Cs, adopting a strategic approach, and managing risk, you can turn these offers into real returns and maximize your enjoyment.

What Are the Most Reliable Sources for Checking Licensed Loan Providers in Singapore?

Finding a safe loan provider in Singapore takes more than just a quick online search. With many options available, it can be hard to know which sources give you accurate and trustworthy information. You need to know where to check licensed loan providers so you can borrow with confidence and avoid scams.

This article will guide you through the most dependable sources that help you confirm if a loan provider is properly licensed. You will see how official listings, government sites, and updated records give you the clarity you need before making any financial decision.

Quick Loan Credit Card Consolidation Loan

A credit card consolidation loan helps you combine multiple card balances into one payment. This can make it easier to manage your debts and reduce the total interest you pay each month. It is often used by people who want a simpler repayment plan.

If you need faster access to funds, an instant cash loan in Singapore can provide quick approval and disbursement. This option may suit you if you face urgent expenses while also trying to manage existing card debt.

The process is usually straightforward, with shorter approval times compared to traditional bank loans. You can expect a focus on speed and convenience, which helps if you want to address your debt quickly without long waiting periods.

By consolidating your credit card balances, you only need to track one monthly payment. This can reduce missed payments and help you regain better control over your finances.

Registry of Moneylenders by the Singapore Ministry of Law

The Registry of Moneylenders is the official source you should use to confirm if a loan provider holds a valid license in Singapore. It is maintained by the Ministry of Law and updated regularly to reflect the current list of approved lenders.

You can find details such as the lender’s business name, license number, address, and contact information. This helps you check that the details match what the lender provides before you proceed.

The registry also shows lenders whose licenses have been suspended or revoked. This allows you to avoid providers that no longer have the right to operate.

By using the registry, you reduce the risk of dealing with unlicensed lenders. It gives you a simple way to verify information before you share personal details or agree to any loan terms.

SBO.sg Top Licensed Moneylenders list

SBO.sg highlights a list of licensed moneylenders in Singapore that you can use as a reference. The site reviews providers based on factors such as reputation, customer feedback, and loan options. This gives you a quick way to compare different lenders without searching across multiple sources.

You can use their list to check which lenders are known for transparent terms and fair practices. By reviewing details like interest rates and repayment flexibility, you gain a clearer picture of what each lender offers. This helps you narrow down choices that fit your needs.

In addition, the list serves as a starting point before you confirm details with official government records. It allows you to save time by focusing only on names already reviewed for professionalism and service quality. Therefore, you can approach your loan search in a more organized and informed way.

Official Singapore Government websites

You should always check licensed loan providers through official government websites. These sites carry accurate and verified information, which helps you avoid false or misleading claims from unlicensed operators.

The Ministry of Law hosts the Registry of Moneylenders, where you can confirm the name, license number, and contact details of approved lenders. This step allows you to verify that a lender is genuine before you commit to any agreement.

Government websites in Singapore use the “.gov.sg” domain. This makes it easier for you to identify authentic sources and avoid fake sites that may try to trick you.

You can also find tools that let you verify other official records, such as business registrations or certificates. Using these platforms gives you direct access to information maintained by the authorities, which reduces the risk of dealing with fraudulent services.

MinLaw’s updated licensed moneylenders list

You should always start with the official list from the Ministry of Law. This list contains every licensed moneylender that has approval to operate in Singapore. It helps you confirm if a lender is legally recognized before you decide to borrow.

The list updates regularly, so you can trust that the information reflects the most current status of each lender. If a company does not appear there, you should treat it as a warning sign.

You can also verify both the physical address and the website address of a lender against the official list. This step protects you from dealing with unlicensed or fraudulent operators.

By using this source, you save time and reduce risk. It gives you a direct way to check legitimacy without depending on third-party reviews or advertisements.

You can check licensed loan providers in Singapore by using the official list from the government. This list is updated often and shows which lenders hold a valid license.

It also helps to confirm details directly with the lender, such as their office address and contact information. Clear communication and transparent terms are strong signs of a proper lender.

By using official sources and cross-checking details, you protect yourself from scams and avoid unlicensed operators. This approach gives you a safer way to borrow with confidence.

Gen Z is coaching older colleagues to use AI

A new global study from International Workplace Group (IWG), the world’s largest platform for work and provider of flexible workspace, reveals that Gen Z employees are playing a pivotal role in driving AI adoption across the workforce, coaching older colleagues to help unlock productivity and collaboration gains in hybrid working environments.
The study, based on a survey of over 2,000 professionals across the US and UK, shows that AI is becoming a cornerstone of how teams and in particular hybrid teams operate. 80% of workers have experimented with AI tools, and 78% say it has saved them time, averaging 55 minutes of saved time per day, equivalent to almost an extra full working day per week.
Workers report that this time is being reallocated to higher-value activities such as creative or strategic work (41%), learning and development (41%), in-person collaboration (40%), and networking (35%). An overwhelming 86% say AI has helped them complete tasks more efficiently, and 76% report that it is directly accelerating their career advancement, with this figure rising to 87% among Gen Z workers.
Cross-generational collaboration key to unlocking AI gains
Cross-generational collaboration is central to this transformation. Nearly two-thirds (59%) of younger employees are actively helping older, more tenured colleagues adopt and learn to use AI tools, with 80% of Senior Directors reporting that this support lets them focus on higher-value tasks, while 82% of Senior Directors report that AI innovations introduced by younger colleagues have unlocked new business opportunities.
Two-thirds of C-suite leaders say younger staff’s AI skills have improved their department’s productivity, and over 80% of senior directors believe AI innovations introduced by junior colleagues have opened up new business opportunities.
Overall, 86% of those surveyed report AI has made them more efficient, and 76% believe it is advancing their career, rising to 87% among Gen Z respondents. AI’s influence on collaboration is also clear: 69% of hybrid workers say it is making teamwork across locations easier, citing benefits such as improved meeting preparation (46%), access to shared insights (36%), and stronger post-meeting follow-ups (36%).
Workers are embracing AI’s potential to eliminate time-consuming administrative tasks. The most common areas where employees want AI to step in include drafting emails (43%), taking and summarising meeting notes (42%), organising files (36%), and completing data entry or forms (36%). With these tasks automated, employees are reallocating time to more meaningful work: 55% are now focusing on high-impact projects, 54% are pursuing professional development, and 40% are using the time to build stronger relationships with colleagues and clients or to invest in personal well-being.
Benefits for hybrid workers
The study also found that 69% of hybrid workers say AI is making it easier to collaborate with colleagues across locations. Improvements in meeting preparation (46%), access to shared insights (36%), and more effective follow-ups (36%) are streamlining teamwork, while 40% say AI has freed up time to invest in team-building and communication.
In the hybrid model, AI is also reshaping how office time is used. With automation handling routine work, hybrid professionals now prioritise strategic thinking (41%), learning and development (41%), face-to-face collaboration (40%), and networking (35%) during in-office days. More than half of workers (53%) say AI is helping them achieve better outcomes, and 64% believe it is making hybrid working smoother and more effective.
Workers are aware of the stakes. Two-thirds (63%) worry that not learning AI tools could slow their career progression, and 61% believe those who don’t adopt AI risk being left behind. Yet the trend is toward inclusive, shared upskilling: 51% of employees say AI is helping bridge generational divides, and over half regularly share AI knowledge with colleagues, rising to 66% among 25–34-year-olds.
Mark Dixon, Founder and CEO of IWG, said: “The world of work is evolving rapidly. Advances in technology, particularly in AI are boosting productivity, opening up new career opportunities, and connecting different generations of expertise.
These significant AI enabled productivity gains are helping to create more connected, agile teams ready for the future of work. Younger generations are playing a pivotal role by sharing their digital skills with their  colleagues, which enhances performance and uncovers new business opportunities.”

Appeals Centre Europe’s First Transparency Report Shines Light on Social Media Mistakes

The Appeals Centre’s first Transparency Report (covering November 2024 to August 2025) highlights the urgent need for independent review of social media decisions. The report shows that where platforms make mistakes, people pay the price: from unjust account suspensions cutting people off from family and friends, to vital health information being removed, or hate speech against vulnerable communities being left online.

More than three-quarters of our decisions overturned Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or YouTube – either because we disagreed with their decision after reviewing the content, or because the platform did not send us the content and we ruled in the user’s favour. The majority of these decisions promoted freedom of expression by recommending that a user’s content or account be restored.

Across the EU people are standing up to social media companies by challenging their decisions:

  • We received nearly 10,000 disputes about decisions by Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok and YouTube.
  • These came from every single EU country, covering content in more than 50 languages.
  • Of these, more than 3,300 disputes were within our scope, for which we have already issued 1,500+ decisions, with the rest expected in the coming weeks.
  • Since November we have expanded to account suspensions and new platforms (Instagram, Threads, Pinterest) to allow more people to use our service.
  • We received the most eligible disputes from Poland, followed by France and Italy.
  • We saw an upwards trend in case numbers, with the number of eligible disputes received increasing by more than 500% from December 2024 to August 2025.

Under EU law (the Digital Services Act), social media platforms must engage in good faith with dispute settlement bodies like the Appeals Centre and tell their users about this new option.

  • Today, however, dispute settlement bodies are Europe’s best-kept-secret. Most people don’t know we exist and some platforms seemingly want to keep it that way. This needs to change. Social media platforms should clearly tell their users about this new option on a dedicated help-page and as part of their internal appeals process.
  • More generally, co-operation with platforms has been mixed. Progress with YouTube, in particular, has been very slow. We have received no content from the company, meaning that – by the end of August – we had made decisions on just 29 of the more than 340 eligible YouTube disputes submitted to us. As such, we are concerned that people and organisations using YouTube in the EU are being denied meaningful access to out-of-court dispute settlement.

The CEO of Appeals Centre Europe, Thomas Hughes, said:

“Decisions by social media companies have very real consequences: from denying people a say in important debates, to cutting off a crucial source of income. But – as our Transparency Report shows – they don’t always get it right. If you’re in the EU, you can challenge the platform’s decision free-of-charge to the Appeals Centre and get an expert, impartial review.”

Why Modern Organizations Need Tech to See Beyond the Obvious

Organizations operate in environments that are far more complex than in the past. Surface-level data offers a partial view, but it rarely explains why trends develop or how different parts of a business influence each other’s outcomes. Relying on reports that capture only what is obvious leaves decision-makers exposed to blind spots, hidden risks, and missed opportunities. To remain competitive, leaders need more than snapshots; they require systems that expose the depth behind the numbers.

Technology is the tool that enables that deeper vision. With connected platforms, advanced analytics, and automated monitoring, companies can detect patterns, uncover relationships, and interpret signals that traditional methods fail to reveal. This capacity to go beneath the surface transforms planning, strengthens foresight, and reduces uncertainty.

Unlocking Deeper Patterns Hidden in Business Data

Data in its raw form often looks straightforward, yet important relationships remain buried within it. Sales figures may indicate whether performance rose or fell, but they don’t immediately explain what drove the shift. Advanced platforms break down those numbers and uncover recurring cycles, regional influences, or connections between customer segments and product categories. Patterns that once required long investigations are revealed quickly, thanks to the integration of business analytics.

But what is business analytics? At its core, it is the practice of applying methods and tools to examine large datasets, uncover relationships, and turn raw numbers into practical insights. Instead of relying on assumptions, leaders gain evidence that explains why trends are happening and where opportunities exist.

Consider the example of combining purchase histories with demographic data. This analysis might reveal customer groups with behaviors that differ from the broader market. Recognizing such distinctions allows organizations to craft targeted strategies, refine products, and allocate resources with greater accuracy.

Revealing Connections Across Disconnected Departments

Departments often collect and store their information separately, which makes it difficult to see how actions in one area affect another. A marketing campaign might increase demand, but without visibility into inventory data, operations may struggle to keep pace. Finance might forecast expenses without access to updated supply chain information, resulting in mismatches between budgets and reality. This lack of alignment creates inefficiencies and missed opportunities for optimization.

Integrated technology platforms help close those gaps by linking data from different functions into a single view. Once information flows freely across departments, connections that were once invisible become clear. Leaders can see, for instance, how promotions in one region affect distribution costs or how project delays in engineering impact revenue forecasts.

Identifying Signals of Shifting Customer Behavior

Customer preferences evolve gradually, often in ways that can be easy to overlook. Small changes in browsing patterns, purchase frequency, or service inquiries provide early hints that expectations are shifting. Organizations that track only quarterly or annual reports often react too late, missing the chance to adapt ahead of competitors.

Digital platforms that collect customer data in real time reveal those subtle movements more quickly. Interaction logs, feedback channels, and transaction data highlight changes in demand or satisfaction before they become obvious. With that level of visibility, product teams can adjust features, marketing groups can refine messaging, and service departments can prepare for new expectations.

Uncovering Root Causes Behind Performance Variations

Performance results often show fluctuations that leaders try to explain quickly. Declining productivity might be blamed on staffing or falling sales linked to seasonal changes. Quick explanations, however, can be misleading and prevent organizations from solving the actual issue. Without deeper investigation, corrective actions may target the wrong area.

Technology makes root-cause analysis far more accurate. Analytics platforms can compare performance data against a wide range of variables, identifying correlations that may not be obvious. A sales slowdown, for instance, might be traced to inventory shortages or logistics delays rather than marketing effectiveness.

Detecting Subtle Market Trends

Markets rarely transform in sudden leaps. Small shifts appear first, such as a niche group adopting a new product, changes in competitor pricing strategies, or growing interest in specific features. Without proper monitoring, those signals may look insignificant and be overlooked until the trend becomes mainstream. By then, the chance to take early advantage has already passed.

Technologies powered by AI and predictive modeling help identify those small yet meaningful signals. Data from online searches, social media, or pilot sales can be analyzed to project future demand. Organizations that detect such trends early can adjust supply chains, refine product development, and prepare targeted campaigns while rivals are still reacting.

Surfacing Inefficiencies Buried in Operations

Operational slowdowns are often caused by issues that appear minor on the surface but accumulate over time. A small delay in approvals, repetitive manual steps, or overlapping responsibilities can quietly reduce efficiency without being noticed. Leaders relying only on high-level reports may not see the impact until it spreads widely across the organization.

Process analytics and workflow monitoring bring those hidden inefficiencies to light. Data highlights where tasks stall, how long handovers take, and which steps consume unnecessary time. With visibility into those patterns, leaders can redesign processes, introduce automation, or redistribute responsibilities to remove friction.

Highlighting Resource Strains

Resource shortages often build gradually and may not appear in standard reporting until they become disruptive. Staff workloads, infrastructure capacity, or budget allocations can all be stretched thin while reports continue to look stable. Without detailed monitoring, those strains remain hidden until they trigger performance drops.

Technology offers the ability to track utilization in real time. Workforce analytics, cloud monitoring, and financial dashboards provide a clearer view of where pressure is mounting. Leaders can intervene early by adjusting staffing levels, scaling infrastructure, or rebalancing budgets.

Detecting Anomalies in Large Data Streams

Large volumes of data often hide irregularities that, while small at first, point toward significant problems. Financial anomalies, system intrusions, or unusual customer behavior may not be obvious without specialized tools. Detecting those irregularities late can result in losses, security breaches, or reputational damage.

Machine learning models excel at spotting anomalies early. Algorithms observe and review data continuously, identify deviations from normal patterns, and trigger alerts for further review. Leaders gain time to investigate and act before issues spread.

Revealing Skill Gaps in Workforce Planning

A workforce may appear strong on paper, with adequate numbers of staff and broad expertise, but hidden gaps in skills can reduce long-term effectiveness. Traditional reporting may not capture whether employees have the capabilities needed for future projects or emerging technologies.

Workforce analytics provide a deeper view. Training records, performance reviews, and project outcomes can be analyzed to highlight areas where additional skills are required. Leaders can then design development programs or recruit talent with the right expertise. Proactive management of skill gaps supports smoother project delivery and creates a stronger foundation for long-term growth.

Illuminating Customer Needs Beyond Basic Metrics

Customer insights often focus on sales figures, repeat purchases, or survey scores. While valuable, those metrics don’t reveal the full scope of customer needs and expectations. Many preferences remain hidden in how customers interact with products, services, or support channels. Relying only on surface-level measures risks missing opportunities to strengthen relationships.

Modern analytics platforms expand the scope of customer understanding. They combine interaction histories, service feedback, and behavioral data to build a fuller picture of what customers truly value.

Modern organizations cannot afford to rely on surface-level reporting or fragmented insights. Technology offers the depth needed to reveal hidden patterns and recognize opportunities that would otherwise remain invisible. Companies that invest in such capabilities position themselves to act with clarity.

Maynooth University scientists pioneer breakthrough fingerprint forensic test

A pioneering new test that can recover fingerprints from ammunition casing, once thought nearly impossible, has been developed by scientists at Maynooth University.

Dr Eithne Dempsey, and her recent PhD student Dr Colm McKeever, of Maynooth University’s Department of Chemistry, have developed a unique electrochemical method which can visualise fingerprints on brass casings, even after they have been exposed to the high temperature conditions experienced during gunfire.

For decades, investigators have struggled to recover fingerprints from weapons because any biological trace is usually destroyed by the high temperatures, friction and gas released after a gun is fired. As a result, criminals often abandon their weapons or casings at crime scenes, confident that they leave no fingerprint evidence behind.

“The Holy Grail in forensic investigation has always been retrieving prints from fired ammunition casings,” said Dr Dempsey. “Traditionally, the intense heat of firing destroys any biological residue. However, our technique has been able to reveal fingerprint ridges that would otherwise remain imperceptible.”

The team found they could coat brass casings with a thin layer of specialised materials to make hidden fingerprint ridges visible. Unlike existing methods that need dangerous chemicals or high-powered equipment, the Department of Chemistry, Maynooth University process uses readily available non-toxic polymers and minimal amounts of energy to quicky reveal prints from seemingly blank surfaces.

It works by placing the brass casing of interest in an electrochemical cell containing specific chemical substances. When a small voltage is applied, chemicals in the solution are attracted to the surface, coating the spaces between fingerprint ridges and creating a clear, high contrast image of the print. The fingerprint appears within seconds as if by magic!

“Using the burnt material that remains on the surface of the casing as a stencil, we can deposit specific materials in between the gaps, allowing for the visualisation,” said Dr McKeever.

Tests showed that this technique also worked on samples aged up to 16 months, demonstrating remarkable durability.

The research has significant implications for criminal investigations, where the current assumption is that firing a gun eliminates fingerprint residues on casings.

“Currently, the best case of forensic analysis of ammunition casings is to match it to the gun that fired it,” said Dr McKeever. “But we hope a method like this could match it back to the actual person who loaded the gun.”

The team focused specifically on brass ammunition casings, a substance that has been traditionally resistant to fingerprint detection and is the most common type of material used globally.

The researchers believe that the test for fingerprints on brass they have developed could be adapted for other metallic surfaces, expanding its range of potential forensic applications, from firearm-related crimes to arson.

This technique uses a device called a potentiostat, which controls voltage and can be as portable as a mobile phone, making it possible to create a compact forensic testing kit.

“With this method, we have turned the ammunition casing into an electrode, allowing us to drive chemical reactions at the surface of the casing,” said Dr McKeever.

While promising, the new technology faces rigorous testing and validation before it could potentially be adopted by law enforcement agencies worldwide. The research, funded by Research Ireland and Maynooth University is published in a leading forensic science journal, has significant implications for global policing.
