Expleo successfully launches first ENSO nanosatellite into space

Expleo has announced the successful launch of its first nanosatellite, ENSO, developed in partnership with the Centre Spatial Universitaire de Montpellier (CSUM).

ENSO (Expleo Nanosat for Solar irradiance Observation) successfully launched on 1 December from California aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, mission 425, flight 1, via ISISpace with first signal received shortly after 21:00 UTC. It will now begin its 4 years-long mission to monitor solar activity and its impact on Earth’s atmosphere.

ENSO is an in-house CubeSat project jointly developed by teams from Expleo and CSUM. It measures just 10x10x10cm and weighs just over 1kg– small enough to hold in your hands. It also incorporates a six-metre antenna, which deploys after launch, and a camera system to support secondary data collection missions.

Once ENSO’s antenna is deployed, it will officially begin its primary mission using a high-frequency beacon to support measurement of the ionosphere, a highly active part of Earth’s upper atmosphere used to support radio and satellite communications. Data from ENSO will be sent to SANSA ground stations located in Antarctica, with the data used to improve our understanding of the impact of solar activity on our atmosphere.

ENSO combines Expleo expertise across systems engineering, electronics and software space engineering, quality and assembly, integration and test (AIT), supported by CSUM’s knowledge and experience of nanosatellite launches. ENSO has been tested on the CSUM shaker and thermal vacuum chamber – resources specially adapted for environmental testing of nanosatellites.

Jeff Hoyle, EVP – Global Aero, Space and Defence of Expleo, said: “Nanosatellites are the embodiment of the NewSpace revolution – a cost-effective yet powerful way of putting the power of space exploration and monitoring into the hands of a far wider audience than ever before. Industries as wide-ranging as aerospace, automotive and energy & utilities all stand to benefit from their potential. With the launch of ENSO, we’ve built a team and perfected the skills needed for the successful development, integration and deployment of nanosatellite payloads.”

“This is a huge milestone for us, but we’re already looking forward to building on this success and developing the skills to support nanosatellite launches and NewSpace activities for our partners, through R&D initiatives such as ExpleoLissa, a software-defined nanosatellite capable of in-orbit reconfiguration.”

ENSO’s mission will last up to four years before starting its end-of-life process, expected in 2027.

We’re excited to see where we can take the Virgin Media ELOI along with Virgin Media into 2024.”

Tech Review – SOUNDPEATS Clear earbuds.

The SOUNDPEATS Clear is one of the latest products on offer form the brand which we have been testing out and there is more so stay tuned for those in the coming days, this pair however are going transparent which seems to be a trend these days getting inspiration from mobile phones I would imagine.

The presentation is great with a different take on things from the brand and they look good and so does the case they come in making them stand out from the crowd in the colour we have which is not so much a fingerprint collector and lets you see inside your tech which I think is cool.

These are comfortable to wear too and fit well and will not fall out and the touch controls work really well and are easy to use and of course we have the soundpeats app which we are really familiar with keeping the controls in order with the rest of their products and simple to use if you are moving up from another pair from the company.

So does transparent tech and its aesthetics take away from the sound quality well in short no in this case and they did well during my testing and for the price you are paying there is little to complain about being honest with their app thrown in to customize the EQ settings which offers a wide variety of options volume is loud you have adaptive EQ and can customize the EQ no lag latency no distortion and overall a general great audio experience for the price, you may get a little wind noise due to the shape of the buds and the case is something to take care of due to its shell but other than that an excellent stocking filler or spare pair of earbuds that also has and IPX4 rating.

New programme encourages people to get involved in monitoring earthquakes in Ireland and across the globe

Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) and Geological Survey Ireland are encouraging the next wave of ‘citizen seismologists’ through a new programme – Quake Shake – which was launched today (05.11.23).

Seismology is the study of earthquakes and seismic waves that move through and around the Earth. This new outreach programme is calling on people of all ages across Ireland to get involved in observing and studying local and global earthquakes – helping them to develop a better understanding of what lies beneath the Earth’s surface.

Quake Shake uses devices known as a Raspberry Shake seismometer. These devices are connected to the internet, allowing real-time monitoring of earthquakes. Raspberry Shakes can detect low magnitude local Irish earthquakes as well as large magnitude earthquakes originating from around the globe. Quake Shake will use additional seismic data from the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) to develop teaching resources and to provide engagement with current seismological research in Ireland.

Commenting on the launch of Quake Shake, Professor Chris Bean, Head of Geophysics at DIAS, said, “Quake Shake represents a significant stride towards inclusive ways of engaging with how the Earth works. With DIAS and Geological Survey Ireland’s joint funding, we are empowering communities to actively achieve a greater appreciation of the dynamism of our planet.”

Koen Verbruggen, Director of Geological Survey Ireland, added, “This initiative aligns with Geological Survey Ireland’s commitment to promoting the understanding and application of geology in Ireland. Quake Shake holds the promise of not just educating but inspiring the next generation of scientists.”

The newly launched Quake Shake website features information about recent earthquakes, tailored exercises for teachers and students and an interactive quiz reinforcing key concepts in seismology. Quake Shake aims to spark interest in physics, mathematics, and geoscience at all levels, as well as nurturing curiosity in higher-level Earth Sciences.

More information on how to become a citizen seismologist and how to join the Quake Shake community is available by emailing info@quakeshake.ie.

Cryptocurrency and Monetization in Music Streaming

The monetization of the music streaming market could be completely changed by cryptocurrency. The ability for fans to pay for each song or album they stream directly through micropayments made possible by cryptocurrencies could lead to more fair revenue sharing for artists and greater transparency in payment structures. However, obstacles to wider use may include issues like the volatility of cryptocurrency markets and the need for greater knowledge and adoption. Despite these difficulties, cryptocurrency-based commercialization holds the promise of developing a more equitable and long-lasting market for both artists and fans.

Cryptocurrency and Music Industry Funding

By introducing new, more democratic and open formats for crowdfunding and investing, cryptocurrencies have the potential to completely change the way that the music industry raises money. Blockchain technology allows for direct collaboration and fan participation in music projects, fostering more personal and meaningful connections between musicians and their audiences. The potential for a more decentralized and democratic music industry, with greater collaboration between artists and fans and more varied funding structures, exists as the technology underlying cryptocurrencies continues to advance. Adoption, meanwhile, won’t be simple; it will require education and awareness among customers and artists. Overall, the introduction of cryptocurrencies into the music business has the potential to transform it into one that is more creative, sustainable, and diversified.

Cryptocurrency and Fan Engagement

Fan participation in the music business could be revolutionized by the use of cryptocurrencies. Artists can develop brand-new methods for fans to interact with their music and careers by utilizing blockchain technology, including the usage of cryptocurrency-based fan tokens, crowdfunding, and investing. While offering artists more immediate access to financing and resources, these models can give fans additional avenues to support their favorite musicians. However, it is essential to carefully weigh the advantages and potential hazards of adopting cryptocurrencies. Overall, adopting this technology can enable a more open and democratic music industry with meaningful and direct interactions between artists and fans.

The Benefits of Cryptocurrency in Music Streaming

The benefits of using cryptocurrency in music streaming include greater convenience, lower transaction fees, increased security and transparency, and more efficient royalty payments. However, there are also potential challenges and drawbacks, such as the need for education and awareness among artists and consumers, volatility and risk associated with cryptocurrency markets, and the potential for disruption of the traditional music industry. Therefore, careful consideration and evaluation of the risks and benefits are necessary for successful adoption of cryptocurrency in the music industry.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the adoption of cryptocurrency in the music industry has the potential to revolutionize the way music is streamed, monetized, and funded. While there are potential challenges and drawbacks associated with its use, such as the need for education and awareness, volatility and risk, and potential industry disruption, the benefits of using cryptocurrency in the music industry are significant. Cryptocurrency can provide more efficient royalty payments, lower transaction fees, greater security and transparency, and new ways for fans to support their favorite artists. Overall, by embracing this technology, artists and fans can create more direct and meaningful relationships, and help to build a more democratic and transparent music industry.

Strategic Shift: 55% of CISOs Now View Cybersecurity as Top Priority

The issues that Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) encounter are changing dramatically in the ever-changing cybersecurity world. Stott & May’s Cyber Security in Focus report for 2023 offers a comprehensive look at the trends impacting CISOs, shining a light on the industry’s most urgent concerns. Notably, this year’s survey reveals a significant strategic shift, with 55% of CISOs now identifying cybersecurity as their top priority, a break from previous worries.

One of the report’s significant findings is the increasing significance of budget restrictions as the principal barrier to implementing cybersecurity roadmaps. Over the last year, there has been a significant 16% year-on-year rise in CISOs citing financial constraints as their top challenge. This move is representative of a wider industry trend in which economic concerns force security officials to accomplish more with fewer resources.

The scarcity of internal capabilities is a continuous concern for CISOs, as emphasised by 34% of survey respondents. A startling 66% of security leaders say sourcing personnel is a significant challenge, emphasising the continued difficulty of locating and keeping skilled individuals in the area. Organisations are wrestling with the requirement to bolster their defences against an increasingly complex threat landscape as demand for cybersecurity knowledge continues to exceed supply.

The roadblocks to effective plan implementation are numerous, ranging from internal talent gaps to gaining leadership backing and building a security-centric culture. What sticks out in the present scenario, however, is the rising effect of economic issues, which forces CISOs to manage their cybersecurity projects with limited finances.

According to this year’s Cyber Security in Focus poll, money restrictions have eclipsed internal capabilities as the top impediment to plan implementation, with 51% of security leaders citing budgetary constraints as their primary impediment. Internal skills, while still a major issue for 34% of CISOs, have taken a second seat to the acute financial difficulties that organisations worldwide confront. Board-level buy-in (11%) and technology (3%) are also mentioned as hurdles by the CISOs polled.

The cybersecurity talent shortage is a chronic issue, with 66% of security leaders failing to fill open jobs inside their organisations. Alarmingly, approximately 69% of security openings remain vacant even after an 8-week period, highlighting the severity of the skills shortage.

The rising expectation of wage levels in the cybersecurity arena is exacerbating the personnel scarcity. A significant 47% of CISOs say that salaries have climbed by more than 11% year on year, while another 31% estimated salary inflation is between 6 and 10%. The competitive market for cybersecurity specialists is heating up, causing organisations to rethink their remuneration structures in order to recruit and retain top personnel.

Strategic cybersecurity investment remains a priority but with limited flexibility for innovation. A significant 44% of CISOs report that their budgets will either remain the same or decrease, emphasising the importance of resource allocation. Only 53% feel security expenditure is keeping up with digital business expectations, indicating a possible divergence between security goals and organisational strategy.

In terms of investment priorities, CISOs are focusing on cloud security (25%), identity and access management (IAM) (20%), and security and vulnerability management (18%). These goals demonstrate a thorough understanding of the changing threat landscape and the need to strengthen defences in key areas.

A notable shift in viewpoint may be seen as CISOs try to link cybersecurity with larger business initiatives. Moreover, 60% of respondents believe that the security function improves the total value proposition to clients. This change highlights the evolution of cybersecurity from a technical requirement to a strategic imperative that directly contributes to corporate objectives.

The Cyber Security in Focus study is a yearly in-depth investigation that draws insights from a high-quality sample of 60 CISOs and security professionals. The report, which was sourced from Stott and May’s professional network across EMEA and North America, combines quantitative research with qualitative interviews with key industry professionals.

In the fast-expanding realm of cybersecurity, Haris Pylarinos, Founder & CEO of Hack The Box, emphasises the need to be outward-looking and ensure internal capabilities remain current. Crossbeam’s CISO, Chris Castaldo, underlines the need to know the company as a critical barrier to successful cybersecurity roadmap implementation.

Ultimately, the 2023 Cyber Security in Focus study presents a complete picture of the problems and possibilities that CISOs face. The industry’s transformation, driven by fiscal limitations, personnel shortages, and the requirement to connect security measures with larger business plans, has resulted in a strategy shift towards cybersecurity as a primary priority. As CISOs face these issues, intelligent decision-making and creative solutions will be essential in navigating the complicated and evolving cybersecurity landscape.

Tech Review – Creative Zen Hybrid Pro SXFI Headphones

Gaming headphones are a big deal these days and there is plenty on the market to pick from and come in all price brackets so there is something for everyone here, As a user of Creatives products some years it is a brand I know I can trust with their audio products and even not being the huge gamer I once was and now a casual user  with all the consoles, Creative is a brand you will most likely see on my big head be it headphones or earbuds for gaming and not only gaming but audio in general as they are well build solid products offering you great value for money and more via their apps which enhances any experience.

The Creative Zen Hybrid Pro SXFI boasts an array of core features, including Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation and Ambient Mode, giving users the flexibility to fully immerse themselves in their audio or stay attuned to their surroundings with modes that seamlessly adapt to any environment. It also comes equipped with custom-tuned 40 mm, powerful yet light Neodymium drivers, which ensure every note is reproduced with power and precision, delivering a rich and captivating sound experience. We take a look at all this in the video review below and also the apps which gives you enhancements like no other and I tested these on my machines here at home to see what is on offer this time around.

The build quality again is robust and solid yet lightweight which for the more avid gamer is critical, the soft cups rest nicely on the ears and the headband is comfortable as well you also get a removable mic which for me is the best option to go over the fixed ones we see as it is something I personally would not use much as I game on my own rather than go into multiplayer online rooms etc.

You get the RGB effects thrown into the  mix too which gives a little flair to what otherwise looks like a regular set of gaming headphones and makes these stand out and the look sleek and clean, you also have other controls on them too such as the power on/off which doubles as a broadcast search and pairing mode, mic mute control, volume wheel and ANC/Ambient control button and trust me the ANC on with the volume maxed out you will hear nothing outside, I mean nothing. Within the SXFI app you have EQ settings and the magic SXFI can be turned on and off. You also get music controls such as play and pause skip and reverse tracks so you can use these not only for gaming but your music and it all plays out well.

RGB Lights on the headphones

The sound is what people are after lets get to it, You need to do the head mapping it only takes a few minutes and you will need someone to help you, you have an EQ to suit your needs and two apps to use what more do you want here, the ANC is great the volume is LOUD and when gaming you wont miss a beat or a footstep and if you do use the mic it works well I done a quick test for audio and it was well received after calling up a buddy or two to waste their time for a few mins to test the headphones, they dont mind and know what I am like but sorry lads no time for gaming right now. BUT that is going to change going forward.

For the money you will fork out here you are onto a winner in short with plenty of features and great audio no matter what they might be plugged into.
