Rise in Purchase Scams Duping Consumers – Bank of Ireland

Bank of Ireland is warning consumers about a new wave of purchase scams which is luring consumers to make payments for goods and services through an advertisement online, which then transpires to be fake.

In the last year, there has been a 32% increase in purchase scams reported to Bank of Ireland. From relatively low value items such as clothes and trainers, through to holiday home deposits and even cars, consumers are often lured by the false promise of a slashed price or bargain and asked to pay directly, sending money from their bank account to another via bank transfer, which provides little protection.  Once the payment is transferred, the seller usually cuts all contact, and the product or service never arrives.

Providing practical advice for consumers, Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud at Bank of Ireland, said: “Fraudulent advertisements online and on social media have been the subject of regular warnings for some time. This alarming trend is not going away, even with increased awareness among the general public, and repeated calls for websites and search engines to remove the adverts.  These fake ads should be caught before they are published online, but many are not.

It’s unacceptable to see fraudsters operating so openly through online advertisements. No company should be generating advertising revenue from criminals – search engines, websites and social media platforms really need to step up and crack down. Our advice to consumers is don’t click on these adverts, ignore them completely, and if something sounds too good to be true, it’s probably fraud.”

Bank of Ireland’s advice in response to the current wave of purchase scams:

  • Research and read reviews to check the site and the seller are genuine.
  • Be alert to poor grammar and spelling, or vague product descriptions.
  • Go directly to the online shopping site by typing the web address into your web browser.
  • Links in unsolicited emails or on social media are not always safe and should be avoided.
  • Use secure payment methods, try and pay by debit or credit card, or the secure payment method recommended by reputable online retailers and auction sites, as this could give you more protection.
  • Never agree to buying vouchers or other items for someone as a way to pay for something else.
  • Always view large purchases in person prior to making full payment for them.
  • If people suspect they have been a victim of fraud they should contact their bank immediately so that the bank can take action to stop a fraud in progress and try to recover funds. Bank of Ireland customers can call our Fraud Team 24/7, on the Freephone line 1800 946 764.

Bank of Ireland is hosting a series of fraud awareness events in branches around the country, where its fraud and security teams will provide advice to members of the public and business owners on the latest fraud trends in circulation and tips on how to safeguard their finances.

Portal Connecting Dublin and New York City Reawakens

Dublin City Council, Portals.org and the Flatiron NoMad are pleased to announce that the Portal connecting New York City and Dublin has reawakened.  The livestream restarted today at 9:00 AM in New York City and 2:00 PM in Dublin, after a temporary pause earlier this week.

The Portal will have specific hours of operation for the coming weeks with the livestream running daily from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM in New York City and 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM in Dublin.

In less than a week of operation, the Portal has attracted tens of thousands of visitors and garnered nearly two billion online impressions. The overwhelming majority of people who have visited the Portal sculptures have experienced the sense of joy and connectedness that these works of public art invite people to have.

The Portal sculptures are not meant to be touched or stepped upon. We have taken steps to limit instances of people stepping on the Portal and holding phones up to the camera lens. The Portals.org team has implemented a proximity-based solution. Now, if individuals step on the Portal and obstruct the camera, it will trigger a blurring of the livestream for everyone on both sides of the Atlantic. The team will continue making updates as needed to ensure that everyone can continue to enjoy the Portal.

The New York site will continue to have on-site security during all hours of operation, as it has had since the Portal debuted. Additionally, fencing has been installed in front of the New York Portal and more signage and spacing decals have been added to assist with crowd management and guide visitors to the optimal spots for interacting with the Portal.

For the Dublin site, physical design features are being implemented to assist with crowd management.

We are excited to welcome people in New York and Dublin back to experience this captivating visual bridge that connects these two iconic cities.

Portals.org artist and founder Benediktas Gylys added the following:

“As humans we are creating the Portals experience together. I invite local communities not only to enjoy but to care about their Portals and how other community members are approaching the sculptures.”

This is a joint statement from Dublin City Council, Portals.org and the Flatiron NoMad Partnership.

SSE Airtricity announces €5 million Generation Green Community Fund

SSE Airtricity has launched a €5 million all-island Community Fund with the aim of delivering meaningful community benefits across the island of Ireland. The company plans to undertake a ten week consultation process, which opens today, and which will continue until 26 July, inviting views from communities, individuals and organisations from towns, villages, inner cities, and rural heartlands, to advise how the fund could best support green initiatives throughout our communities.
The SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community fund is part of SSE Airtricity’s commitment to customers and the communities it serves by supporting them on the path to net zero through education, awareness raising, as well as grant funding and energy efficiency supports. The fund aims to support communities in reaching net zero by delivering a positive and lasting social impact.
Heather Humphreys T.D., Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural and Community Development said: “I am delighted that SSE Airtricity has officially launched its €5 million Green Generation Community Fund. This is a transformative level of funding that will make a real and lasting difference in rural and urban communities. It’s pleasing to see SSE Airtricity acknowledge the integral role that local communities the length and breadth of Ireland will play in the transition to Net Zero through the launch of its community fund and consultation process today.
“This new fund will support local communities across Ireland with biodiversity, education, and decarbonisation projects, along with enhancing services and amenities in rural and urban areas.
I would encourage local communities and organisations to positively engage with SSE Airtricity and its Green Generation Community Fund during the consultation phase.”
Klair Neenan, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity, said: “Getting to net zero is in everyone’s interest and local communities will be at the heart of the energy transition. We know there are passionate people and groups working hard across Ireland and we want to help them make a positive difference by powering up their sustainability plans. But funding can often be an issue. That’s why we’re delighted to launch our unique Generation Green Community Fund.
“We know issues like biodiversity, education and decarbonisation are big priorities but to ensure the funding makes the biggest difference we want to hear from local communities directly.  That’s why we’re launching this initial consultation, and we look forward to hearing from communities and individuals, to inform how the fund should be used.”
As part of the consultation process, SSE Airtricity is inviting local communities and individuals to shape what the priorities for the fund should be. This will ensure the fund focuses on what is most important to communities. Examples of priorities may include green energy upgrades for community buildings, community biodiversity projects or green skills workshops and education.
The SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community Fund will be administered in line with a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals, aligning with SSE Airtricity’s core sustainability priorities around community, biodiversity, education and decarbonisation.
The company has a long-standing commitment of supporting its customers and community groups. In response to the global energy crisis in 2022 and 2023, SSE Airtricity established a €25 million customer support fund to help its customers deal with the impacts of inflation.
The SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community Fund will be open to application later this year, following the initial consultation period.

New app launched to inform Irish citizens about European Parliament Elections

A new app aiming to help European citizens engage with the upcoming European Parliament elections has gone live on May 9th to coincide with Europe Day.

The EU&I app aims to help EU citizens navigate the upcoming European Parliament elections, taking place in June. The app provides a comprehensive platform to help voters explore and understand the positions of both Irish political parties and independent candidates competing in the European elections.

When they visit the EU&I web app, users are prompted to indicate their political preferences through a questionnaire, which generates personalised insights about which political parties and candidates align best with the voter’s values and beliefs.

Available in 20 languages with 36 policy statements, the EU&I Voter app offers users an extensive guide on a range of topics central to European politics, including economic policies, environmental initiatives, and social justice issues. It also allows users to explore party/candidate views on Ireland’s position in Europe and beyond.

The creators of the app are hoping that this new development will encourage Irish citizens to vote in the upcoming elections taking place on the 7th of June.

Commenting on the launch of the app, Team Ireland lead, and Associate Professor at UCD, Dr James Cross said: “We are delighted to officially launch our new app EU&I ahead of the European elections. This app provides an excellent educational platform to empower Irish voters, which will, in turn, allow them to make informed decisions about the future of Europe. A group of our master’s students from different disciplines here at UCD have been working tirelessly to compile information about the election and its candidates. They have made this information accessible to our app users, contributing to a Europe-wide effort to inform voters. By harnessing the power of technology, we aim to empower voters to make informed decisions when entering the ballot box this June.”

UCD Master’s Student Aaron Kelly added: “By making this political information readily available for app users, we aim to inform the general public on one simple, accessible platform. This helpful tool eliminates political jargon while providing a wealth of information for citizens as well as for politicians themselves. It is a free resource that provides a personalised and exhaustive political guide for users, and we hope that it will encourage more people to get out and use their vote in June.

The official launch of EU&I Voter took place on the 14th of May at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. A panel discussion featuring Dr. Laura Sudulich from the University of Exeter, Dr. Kevin Cunningham Director of Ireland Thinks and Patrick O’Riordan from Dublin Office of the European Parliament on pressing issues faced by the EU was held, as well as a live demonstration of the app.

Tech Review – dbrand Google Pixel 8a Grip case and Skins

dbrand is a well known case and skins company who are very reputable and have a fantastic way of putting words to things even on social media which is great in my book they say it as they see just like me and move along swiftly often leaving a bitter taste in some people’s mouths that rightly deserve it and if you do not follow them on X you are missing out.

They have kindly sent me their newest Grip case and some skins for the all new Google Pixel 8a which I was delighted to receive after some email tennis which at first I thought was a wind up!..

It was not a wind up after all and I fucking love it that they have chosen a quite colourful character from Ireland to check out what they have to offer and we will get into it now as I have said enough..

OK so presentation is great with the Black box that opens out presenting you with some facts a cloth the grip case and skins more should do this as presentation is key but some will say it is only a case, that it maybe but first impressions last.

The first thing you will notice on taking out the Grip case is just how grippy it is and as a well season case reviewer this is the grippiest case I have held and you can be sure you will not drop this one with its textured microdots then along the sides you have got grip strips adding to the gripping power.

The buttons are tactile and work really well nice and clicky with good travel and work as expected with precision each time there is also some ridges on the volume keys on the case. A feature also not seen before is a chamfered lip and crescent arc which just makes life easier using the case over others, your fingers will love it.

All the cutouts are perfect for your ports and the camera area is well protected too, there is raised ridges on the back for the skins to be applied should you wish to install, I suggest you do as it will stop your case getting scratched.

Skins for the Pixel 8a

The back of the case is smooth to the finish but this is where the skins come in to spruce the look up and with a big range of eye catching colors you are not short of choice and the range I had to pick from was great and something for everyone here.

Yes you can still charge your phone wirelessly with no issues and I tested on several wireless chargers at home and one in my car so it works do not worry.

Overall the grippiest case I have tested with super cool skins and you should get so watch the flaming video below for the hands on experience and buy one.

The Benefits of Playing Simpler Video Games From Time to Time

In the world of video gaming, we should endeavour to just keep it simple. Sometimes, there are benefits to moving from all-singing, all-dancing complexity to simple video games, and while this may seem like heresy, we’ve all got to dial it and remember that keeping things simple in our video gaming efforts can bring about a whole heap of positives, including the following:

A Pathway to Mastery

While simple games may lack in concept, the reality is that many classic games are difficult to truly master. Games like Sudoku and chess are excellent examples that have been perplexing people almost permanently. This means a satisfying challenge as players improve their skills over time. It can be incredibly complex to navigate modern gaming because of the sheer volume of functions, and this is why sometimes the simpler game mechanics, such as Sega Mega Drive and retro consoles, may have fewer features and are simpler. But this is a lesson in simplicity in every part of our lives. When we encourage ourselves to hone our abilities on simple and focused mechanics, we can achieve mastery and provide a solid gaming foundation that helps us in other aspects of our gaming journey.

Approachability and User Friendliness

Sometimes we just need to remember that simple is far more effective. Simpler games like Tetris are easy to learn and pick up, meaning that they are highly approachable for players of all skill levels. So rather than spending time fumbling with the controls trying to get into a game experience that we think we should be making the most of but getting frustrated in the process, simpler games like retro games with a handful of buttons make it a far more welcoming gameplay experience.

The Nostalgia Benefits

Nearly anybody of a certain age can look back on their childhood with fondness and remember playing games on the Commodore 64 or Super Nintendo. The enduring appeal of an old-fashioned game demonstrates that complex mechanics or graphics are not always necessary to provide an engaging gaming experience. We live in a world where games are heavy on content, and sometimes we need a palate cleanser. Shorter games with minimal rounds were all the rage in the 1990s. Games like The Terminator on the Mega Drive had four levels, providing an opportunity to enjoy gaming without being overburdened. That’s not to say they were games with more than a fair share of challenges. Flashback was another excellent game that had a handful of levels, but was densely layered.

While modern games are great for your memory and learning, sometimes we need to remember that simple can be far more sinister. Whether you’re looking for a nostalgic escape or a change of pace, complexity is something that we should shun in the modern world, not just in gaming but in life. Sometimes we can benefit from keeping things simple. Those older games like Pac-Man or Donkey Kong, as well as rhythm games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero, can be a welcoming change from the norm.

HP Catches Cyber criminals ‘Cat-Phishing’ Users

HP Ireland today issued its quarterly HP Wolf Security Threat Insights Report, showing attackers are relying on open redirects, overdue invoice lures, and Living-off-the-Land (LotL) techniques to sneak past defences. The report provides an analysis of real-world cyberattacks, helping organisations to keep up with the latest techniques cybercriminals use to evade detection and breach PCs in the fast-changing cybercrime landscape.

Based on data from millions of endpoints running HP Wolf Security, notable campaigns identified by HP threat researchers include:

  • Attackers using open redirects to ‘Cat-Phish’ users: In an advanced WikiLoader campaign, attackers exploited open redirect vulnerabilities within websites to circumvent detection. Users were directed to trustworthy sites, often through open redirect vulnerabilities in ad embeddings. They were then redirected to malicious sites – making it almost impossible for users to detect the switch.
  • Living-off-the-BITS: Several campaigns abused the Windows Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) – a legitimate mechanism used by programmers and system administrators to download or upload files to web servers and file shares. This LotL technique helped attackers remain undetected by using BITS to download the malicious files.
  • Fake invoices leading to HTML smuggling attacks: HP identified threat actors hiding malware inside HTML files posing as delivery invoices which, once opened in a web browser, unleash a chain of events deploying open-source malware, AsyncRAT. Interestingly, the attackers paid little attention to the design of the lure, suggesting the attack was created with only a small investment of time and resources.

Patrick Schläpfer, Principal Threat Researcher in the HP Wolf Security threat research team, comments:

Targeting companies with invoice lures is one of the oldest tricks in the book, but it can still be very effective and hence lucrative. Employees working in finance departments are used to receiving invoices via email, so they are more likely to open them. If successful, attackers can quickly monetise their access by selling it to cybercriminal brokers, or by deploying ransomware.”

By isolating threats that have evaded detection-based tools – but still allowing malware to detonate safely – HP Wolf Security has specific insight into the latest techniques used by cybercriminals. To date, HP Wolf Security customers have clicked on over 40 billion email attachments, web pages, and downloaded files with no reported breaches.

The report details how cybercriminals continue to diversify attack methods to bypass security policies and detection tools. Other findings include:

  • At least 12% of email threats identified by HP Sure Click* bypassed one or more email gateway scanners.
  • The top threat vectors in Q1 were email attachments (53%), downloads from browsers (25%) and other infection vectors, such as removable storage – like USB thumb drives – and file shares (22%).
  • This quarter, at least 65% of document threats relied on an exploit to execute code, rather than macros.

Val Gabriel, Managing Director at HP Ireland, comments:

Living-off-the-Land techniques expose the flaws of relying on detection alone as try sneak past defences. As they are using legitimate tools, it can be difficult to spot threats without throwing up a lot of disruptive false positives. Threat containment provides protection even when detection fails, preventing malware from destroying user data or credentials, and preventing attacker persistence.  This is why organisations should take a defence-in-depth approach to security, isolating and containing high-risk activities to reduce their attack surface.”

HP Wolf Security runs risky tasks in isolated, hardware-enforced disposable virtual machines running on the endpoint to protect users, without impacting their productivity. It also captures detailed traces of attempted infections. HP’s application isolation technology mitigates threats that slip past other security tools and provides unique insights into intrusion techniques and threat actor behaviour.
