WHOOP Study Unveils New Digital Biomarker for Menstrual Cycle Monitoring, Advancing Understanding of Female Physiology

WHOOP, the human performance company, has announced the findings of a new study that introduces a digital biomarker for menstrual cycle monitoring, providing much needed insight into female physiology. Published in Nature’s Digital Medicine journal, the research examines the cardiovascular changes that occur during the menstrual cycle, offering a non-invasive method for tracking reproductive health.
The study, which analysed over 45,000 menstrual cycles from more than 11,500 participants, highlights the under-researched nature of women’s health. Despite women’s health issues affecting half of the population, only 3% of medical research is focused on women’s health. This new research is one of the largest efforts to leverage wearable technology for understanding the menstrual cycle and its impact on overall health.
“This research is a huge step forward in how we understand women’s health. While it has long been understood that various health metrics fluctuate with the menstrual cycle, the extent of these fluctuations and their significance have not been fully understood,” said Will Ahmed, CEO of WHOOP”
This research was conducted using the wearable device, WHOOP, which continuously monitors users’ biometric data. In total, over 1.2 million days of data were analysed to uncover these insights. The researchers behind the study, led by Summer R. Jasinski, suggest that this method could serve as a reliable and accessible indicator of hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, offering a new approach for tracking reproductive health without the need for costly tests or invasive procedures.
The key finding of the study is the introduction of a metric called “cardiovascular amplitude,” which tracks fluctuations in resting heart rate (RHR) and heart rate variability (HRV) during the menstrual cycle. According to the study, these fluctuations follow a predictable pattern, with RHR reaching its lowest point and RMSSD peaking around day 5 of the cycle, and RHR reaching its highest point around day 26.

The study also found that factors such as age, BMI, and hormonal birth control use can affect these fluctuations, making this new digital biomarker useful for identifying cycle irregularities and reproductive health issues.

In addition to menstrual tracking, WHOOP understands these fluctuations also offers guidance on optimising physical activity during the cycle. Research shows that exercise can have significant benefits throughout the cycle, but the type and intensity of workouts may be better aligned with specific phases.

For example, the follicular phase, including the first few days of menstruation, is often an optimal time for high-intensity workouts, as energy levels may begin to rise. In contrast, the luteal phase might be better suited for low-intensity exercises like yoga or walking, as the body prioritises recovery and may experience a slight dip in energy levels. Committed to advancing the understanding of female physiology at every stage of our menstrual cycle, these WHOOP insights empower women to gather a better understanding of their own bodies, and tailor their fitness routines to physiological needs, enhancing both performance and overall well-being.
This new study marks a significant step in the growing field of wearable health technology, which continues to offer new possibilities for non-invasive monitoring of various aspects of health. WHOOP data reveals Ireland Ranks as the World’s Worst Sleepers

New research published by WHOOP, the human performance company, shows Irish members have earned the unenviable title of the world’s worst sleepers, according to its 2024 Year in Review report.
The report shows that Irish members, who use WHOOP wearable technology to track activity, recovery, stress, and sleep, recorded the lowest average REM sleep globally, clocking in at just 20.5% of our nightly sleep stages. REM sleep, a critical stage for cognitive function and emotional processing, remains elusive for many in Ireland. Belgium and the Netherlands follow closely behind, with averages of 20.6% and 20.8%, respectively.

Regional insights provide a more nuanced view of the nation’s sleep habits. Counties such as Wicklow, Cavan, and Sligo led the charge in sleep performance, with Wicklow achieving an impressive overall average sleep score of 80.47%. These disparities suggest that local factors—ranging from lifestyle to environmental influences—may play a significant role in determining sleep quality.

Despite poor Irish results, global trends show an increased awareness of the importance of sleep by younger generations. WHOOP data shows Generation Z (born between 1997-2012) leads in REM sleep globally, with an average of 21.54%. This is closely followed by Millennials (1981 – 1996) at 21.45%. Gen X members (1965-1980) averaged 19.9%, while Boomers (1955 –1964) trailed further behind with just 18.4%.

These findings suggest that younger generations are carrying the torch for good sleep quality, not just in Ireland, but across the globe. In contrast, older generations, while often consistent in their sleep schedules, may face greater challenges in achieving deep, restorative rest.
To combat this challenge and enable members to get the best quality sleep possible to aid optimal performance, the best sleepers on WHOOP recommend the following:
  • Stick to a Regular Sleep Schedule: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day helps regulate your body’s internal clock, improving the quality of your sleep.
  • Create an Ideal Sleep Environment: Ensure your bedroom is conducive to sleep by keeping it dark, quiet, and cool. Using blackout curtains, eye masks, earplugs, and maintaining a comfortable mattress and pillow can contribute to more restful sleep.
  • Establish a Bedtime Routine: Engaging in relaxing activities before bed, such as reading, practicing deep breathing, or taking a warm bath, can signal to your body that it’s time to wind down, helping you fall asleep more easily.
  • Reduce Screen Time in the Evening: Limiting exposure to screens in the evening reduces blue light exposure, which can disrupt melatonin production and interfere with sleep. Aim to avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime.
  • Monitor Caffeine and Alcohol Consumption: Drinking caffeine in the afternoon can negatively affect sleep quality, and alcohol is often reported to disrupt sleep patterns. Limiting these substances, especially in the hours before bed, can enhance your sleep.
As holistic wellness takes centre stage, Briain Curtin, VP of Global Marketing at WHOOP, highlighted the company’s growing influence in Ireland and the rise in member engagement in 2024: “As WHOOP grows in Ireland, it’s inspiring to see members deeply engaging with their health data. With more robust and personalised insights provided by WHOOP, members are recognising the importance of sleep, recovery, and rest for performance, which is a huge step forward. These trends not only reflect national progress but also empower individuals to make lasting health changes, and perform at their personal best, which is ultimately our goal.”

The Innovative Ways Businesses Harness The Power Of Biometric Technology

Tech advancements enter the business world and change the face of things for companies of all sizes across numerous industries. We can pull out endless examples of this happening, and today’s focus is on biometric technology. It’s not the newest tech advancement out there, yet it’s something businesses are only just starting to take advantage of.

This post will explore the concept of biometrics to help you understand what this tech entails before launching into some of the revolutionary ways businesses harness this fascinating solution.

What is Biometric Technology?

Often simply referred to as “biometrics,” this technology involves measuring physical characteristics to help identify individuals. The Thales Group explains that biometrics are the most suitable way to authenticate people using their unique biological features.

Fingerprint scanning is a common example of biometric technology. Everyone has a unique fingerprint pattern, and biometric scanners analyse this to differentiate between individuals. The simplest way to think about this technology is that it’s like using different aspects of your body as a password.

Key Ways to Use Biometric Technology in Your Business

How do businesses use biometrics? For starters, all biometric systems begin with a registration process. This is when all individuals with access to the system register their specific biometric input. As demonstrated above, this could be a fingerprint – though it may also be a retina scan, facial scan, etc.

The business that collects this data and uses it for all of these concepts/ideas:

Access Control Systems

An access control system is primarily used to determine who has access to specific parts of a building. Businesses use these on the outside of their property to only allow the right people into the facility. Some will also implement access control systems for specific rooms inside an office – like meeting rooms, server rooms, etc.

Biometric technology is the safest and most effective way to determine who has access. Before entering a business, employees register their fingerprints and scan them, preventing unwanted visitors from getting inside, which creates a much more secure workplace.

Additional Workstation Security

Companies extend the benefits of biometric technology to individual workstations. Some people might have access to your office, but that doesn’t mean they gain access to computers or laptops. What if a cleaner decides to turn on a PC when nobody’s around? Who knows what kind of private and important data this might expose?

Almost all businesses now use biometrics to secure personal workstations. This ensures each employee can only access their PC, which reduces the risk of serious problems like data breaches or stolen work. It tightens business security, though it could also be used for certain tracking metrics.

For example, some companies may allow multiple employees to access different workstations. Biometric scanning shows which employee logs into which device and any given time. This allows the higher-ups to track things like the time an individual spends working at their PC every day. It also helps detect anomalies like one employee randomly logging into another person’s PC during the lunch break.

More Accurate Attendance Tracking

Speaking of tracking, you can use biometric technology for the most accurate attendance tracking system ever. It’s vital to stay on top of employee attendance so you know if people arrive or leave on time. This prevents instances when someone may always be late to work and early to leave without consulting you beforehand. Constant lateness is not a good trait and can have negative effects on the rest of your business.

However, many attendance tracking systems have a big loophole: other employees can simply log in for their friends. It’s not uncommon for people to take turns being late, and yet the attendance system shows they’re both always on time.

Biometric scanning forces the individual to physically be at work so they can clock in. There’s no way for a friend to replicate their fingerprint or facial scan, which helps businesses generate accurate attendance records. You can either identify the chronic late arrivals or the presence of your biometric system stops people from being late altogether.

Improved Workplace Safety

Using biometrics for access control systems will improve workplace safety, but there’s another layer to this that further enhances safety at work. Implement biometric scanners on machines or specific areas that may be deemed “hazardous” for most workers.

Here’s a basic example: you operate a warehouse, but only certain employees are qualified to use forklift trucks or lifts. Before someone uses either of these dangerous machines, they need to scan their fingerprint to turn on the forklift or remove a special lift from a locked enclosure. It immediately stops the wrong people from using harmful machinery and potentially causing accidents.

The same can be done with hazardous cleaning supplies: lock them in a closet and use biometric security to restrict access to the closet. It stops people from accidentally opening a door and being exposed to harmful chemicals without wearing the right protective gear. Your cleaners will have access, but they’re qualified to handle these products.

Impress Potential Clients/Investors

All of these ideas show the many uses of biometric technology in a modern business. When you look at this technology in action, it has another key benefit: it impresses people! Anyone walking into your business will be stunned by the sheer level of technology on display. Even something as simple as needing a retina scan when entering your building will blow them away.

Small things like this go a long way to making a wonderful first impression. It could be what tips the scales in your favour during initial consultations with prospective clients – or investor meetings.

To conclude, biometric technology is profoundly useful across businesses of all shapes and sizes. It may have more use in certain industries, but there are ways to take advantage of this great tech no matter what you do. There’s no denying its effectiveness in security/safety, particularly when it comes to access control, workstation security, etc. It’s definitely something to keep in mind if you’re looking to upgrade your business.
