Dublin and Sligo students release ‘smart’ pebbles to track climate change impacts

Primary and second-level students are this week placing 300 specially adapted RFID-enabled pebbles at Killiney Beach (Dublin) and Raghly Beach (Sligo) in a project to track coastal erosion. The innovative project aims to strengthen coastal communities’ ability to deal with the impacts of climate change using digital technologies.

Led by Dr Chiara Cocco and Dr Francesco Pilla, researchers with Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, at University College Dublin and Dr Iulia Anton, a researcher at Atlantic Technological University Sligo, the ‘smart’ pebbles initiative is part of the €10 million European-wide project SCORE (score-eu-project.eu) funded by the European Commission.

“This project is really exciting because we are collaborating with people of all ages – primary school students, transition year students and a local Tidy Towns group – and using innovative technologies to examine the impacts of climate change on their coastal communities. The students will play a key role in releasing and monitoring 300 specially adapted Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enabled pebbles over the coming months. Each ‘smart’ pebble, painted yellow and typically about 10cm in size, has a RFID transponder cemented into drilled holes, enabling us to trace the impacts of erosion and their movements over the coming months,” explained Dr Cocco, Assistant Professor at UCD.

Dr Anton, the project manager of the SCORE project, said: Each pebble will be 3D scanned by the ‘search and rescue’ students, enabling the tracking of abrasions and markings. Then, we will be able to track the pebble’s movements using RFID readers and GPS locators. These citizen science results will be analysed in the lab utilising algorithms to determine climate change impacts on coastal erosion on the beach.”

“We are thrilled to start this exciting initiative at Killiney and Raghly Beaches. Our collaboration with local schools, led by dedicated students, is pivotal in this activity. Their role in releasing and monitoring these pebbles, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, will provide invaluable insights into erosion patterns and movements. This citizen science initiative not only fosters environmental stewardship but also empowers the younger generation to engage in climate resilience efforts actively,” Dr Anton added.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Sligo County Council are also part of this initiative, one of the winning projects of the Accelerator Programme promoted by the EU-funded IMPETUS project (impetus4cs.eu). Dalkey Tidy Towns is involved in the Killiney project in Dublin with Monkstown CBS, Rathdown School and Holy Child. In Sligo, Grange Post Primary School is actively participating in the Raghly Beach project.

Dr Cocco said it is important to raise citizen awareness about climate risks in coastal urban areas.

“The project aims to actively involve younger people and empower them to become active participants in scientific activities related to climate risks,” she concluded.

Why Multi-Camera Conferencing Represents The Next Generation Of Video Meetings

In an age of video bars and webcams more and more organisations are adding a dynamic new dimension to their remote meetings, by taking a multi-camera approach.

That’s the experience of hardware manufacturer, Boom Collaboration, which has seen growth in ‘live events’ and more intuitive conference calls, rise by over a third so far this year.

The Texas-based company is witnessing a significant acceleration in demand for multi-camera conferencing which it views as an exciting new era for larger remote gatherings, transforming standard meetings into more engaging and powerful customer experiences.

International appeal

Founders Fredrik Hörnkvist and Holli Hulett believe new technology is helping blur the lines between traditional video calls and once complex AV production broadcasting.

Church ceremonies, court rooms, auction houses and healthcare training are some of the most popular sectors so far – as deployments continue to diversify. Industry trade shows are attracting remote visitors where panel debates and live presentations are all benefitting from a multi-angle approach.

Equally larger traditional conference rooms are adding additional cameras for a more intuitive life-like experience – according to the company which has seen a 35% surge in multi-camera sales so far in 2023.

“There’s no doubt we are seeing major growth in live events and remote communication on an international scale across a growing number of sectors,” says Hörnkvist.

“Many of today’s popular software-based meeting apps have the option to share multiple cameras and it’s clear this type of technology adds a new edge to traditional meetings, presentations and live shows.

“Healthcare training for example, is an area where lots of students can witness heart surgery remotely, rather than all being crammed into an operating theatre which wouldn’t be viable. They can view and learn clearly from various camera angles, from anywhere in the world.”

He continued: “Equally there are many conferences, trade shows and industry events that can sell more tickets by having a remote element too. There’s one price to attend in-person plus an online pass option.”

Multi-dimensional meetings

Hörnkvist highlighted: “There are many things to consider when planning a remote gathering. The first is identifying a suitable location with good lighting and audio dynamics. Next is considering camera angles and decor plus how many actual cameras will be used. Technical knowledge is crucial too. Who is going to act as a producer and switch between cameras? How is content going to be shared? Do you need outside expertise? Also, how long will the event last is another factor. You don’t want people becoming bored and losing interest. Interaction is crucial.”

He feels advances in technology open the door to easier management of multi-dimensional meetings – creating more opportunities to enhance the overall customer experience.

“It’s often been a complex and technical process in the past. But advances in technology are inspiring greater user confidence and expertise,” he notes.

“Power and electricity supply capacity can be a challenge. We often recommend using cameras that have a PoE capability. This makes it easier to deploy devices on the same network and improve room aesthetics, without unsightly cables everywhere.”

He says overall appeal will be further enhanced by new solutions such as Boom’s GOJO camera controller, which can manage over 250 devices, if required.

New era

For Hulett the use of high performance 4K PTZ cameras and expandable audio is essential; insisting ‘quality counts’.

She explained: “High quality PoE cameras, expandable audio and easy to use camera controllers/mixing desks are some of the key ingredients for a successful remote experience. Don’t overlook the importance of audio compared to video. If people can’t be heard clearly, then the show is over.”

Hulett began the business with co-founder Fredrik Hörnkvist in 2020, with Boom now embarking on a global expansion drive including the UK and Europe.

She advises: “To overcome some of the fundamental room challenges we always suggest putting the main camera at eye level on the same wall as the display so that it’s natural and easy to engage directly with people.

“We feel something like a 360 degree camera is actually counter intuitive to the way we communicate as it doesn’t promote natural eye contact and reading of body language cues. Also because more people are using video calls now they are more aware of their physical appearance while on screen. This further enforces the need for high calibre cameras that make the most of a variety of meeting conditions.’

Hulett concluded: It’s about creating a space that goes beyond the traditional video conference room by facing cameras in multiple directions, for more fluid and engaging experiences. We expect these trends to continue to expand and diversify, as a new era and the next chapter in video conferencing begins to unfold.”

Dublin city shortlisted for 2024 European Capital of Smart Tourism award

Dublin City Council is delighted to announce that Dublin City has been shortlisted for the 2024 European Capital of Smart Tourism award. It is the second time Dublin has been shortlisted for the designation. Last year Dublin City Council also won the prestigious Tourism Innovation Award in Seville.

The shortlist was announced this morning by the European Commission.

From a pool of 30 candidates spanning 17 countries, the selected finalists for the European Capital of Smart Tourism are in alphabetical order, Bremerhaven (Germany), Cork (Ireland), Dublin (Ireland), Genoa (Italy), Helsingborg (Sweden), and San Sebastián (Spain).

The European Capital of Smart Tourism recognises best practice and innovative tourism practices in European cities.  Dublin is one of the first European cities to prioritise a specific Smart Tourism programme.  Since 2020, Dublin City Council, Smart Dublin and Dublin City Council Culture Company have been working in partnership on Dublin’s first Smart Tourism Programme, with the aim of making the city a smart tourism destination, using the city’s expertise in technology to deliver a superior tourism experience.

Head of Dublin City’s Tourism Unit, Barry Rogers said:  “This shortlisting is a real recognition of many years of consistent collaboration and work across Dublin City Council, Smart Dublin and Dublin City Council Culture Company. This designation specifically recognises cities who are striving to be more digitally advanced, sustainable, accessible and more equitable for locals.   Dublin being shortlisted amongst these other leading destinations is a welcome benchmark of our own progress to date and provides many more opportunities for innovation and collaboration going forward. We very much look forward to representing Dublin in Brussels in our bid to become the 2024 European Capital of Smart Tourism”

Dublin’s Smart Tourism Initiative is a Dublin City Council programme, made in partnership with Smart Dublin and Dublin City Council Culture Company. The programme is led and governed by the Dublin City Tourism Unit and is underpinned by the Innovation pillar of the new Dublin City Council Tourism Strategy 2023-2028 which states: We recognise the enormous opportunity to blend our expertise in technology, culture and tourism to build a more future facing offer in Dublin. We will be a test-bed for innovation within the tourism industry in Dublin, ultimately creating more and better experiences for visitors.

The goal of the Smart Tourism programme is to establish Dublin as a world-leading ‘Smart Destination’ through innovation, research and partnerships. The programme is responsible for the development of cutting edge visitor experiences such as the new Dublin Discovery Trails App. Last year Dublin City Council received the Digital and Innovation award at the Tourism Innovation Summit in Seville for its development of the Smart Tourism programme.

You can access a brief profile of each of the shortlisted cities here.

The European Capital of Smart Tourism award will be granted to the city that demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to shaping the future of sustainable and innovative tourism. The award also aims to foster networking and the fortification of destinations while facilitating the exchange of best practices in this field.

Following this stage, the finalists will be invited to present their proposals to a European Jury, tasked with selecting the 2024 European Capital of Smart Tourism. The chosen city will receive extensive support in communication and branding. This includes the creation of a promotional video, installation of a hashtag sculpture for public exhibition in the city, and the implementation of tailored promotional campaigns aimed at boosting visibility at both the EU and global levels, ultimately resulting in an increase in the number of visitors.

The competition welcomed participation from cities within the European Union and non-EU countries that are eligible to the Single Market programme. An impartial panel of experts conducted a thorough evaluation of the applications, and those applicants who achieved the highest cumulative score across all categories successfully advanced.

Until now, the  lineup has included instant cameras with a “shoot and print” function and smartphone printers with a  “print” function, but the INSTAX Pal announced today is the first “shoot” only product in the INSTAX series.

This new compact digital camera fits into the palm of your hand and sends photos directly to your  smartphone via Bluetooth1to the dedicated INSTAX Pal smartphone app. When users are ready, they  can print off their favorite images using an INSTAX Link series printer* or the instant hybrid cameras  INSTAX mini Evo and INSTAX mini LiPlay, meaning they have the versatility to print in mini, SQUARE,  or WIDE formats. REvolve is “Driving Circular Action” as An Garda Síochána CO2e savings announcement highlights commitment to circular economy

REvolve, an independent technology-driven supply chain solution driving the circular economy in the automotive sector, was formally launched with the announcement that, in 2022 An Garda Síochána’s net Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) savings by procuring green parts from REvolve partner, Ted4Parts, for its fleet were 38,477.35 kgCO2e, in comparison with purchasing newly manufactured vehicle parts. This represents an average 94% saving for An Garda Síochána.

The impressive figure was announced by Minister of State with responsibility for Public Procurement and eGovernment, Ossian Smyth TD, at the event at REvolve’s Castleblayney partner facility on September 18th. Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, and members of An Garda Síochána, amongst other key stakeholders in automotive repair in Ireland, also attended the event.

Leading the way in B2B transformation driving circular acton within the automotive supply chains through its custom-built technology platform engineered with the expertise of Philip Mackessy, of Mackessy Technology based in Limerick, REvolve OS empowers clients, like An Garda Síochána, to embrace all the benefits of sustainability in a new and innovative way by bringing an independent panel of quality-assured vehicle recyclers and green parts suppliers, and green parts consumers such as insurers, repairers, and fleets, together in a structured, value-driven way, with real, measurable financial and environmental benefits.

The Monaghan based company is focused on maximising the re-use of automotive parts and resources, and the software is designed from the ground up to integrate with fleet, insurer and repairer workflows to streamline the use of green parts for all stakeholders, delivering real, measurable financial and carbon savings for all stakeholders through its innovative technology.

REvolve’s network of quality and progressive salvage agents and approved vehicle recyclers across Ireland and the UK offer the highest level of service, focusing on the key metrics of the client, and all REvolve-supplied green parts are graded to the VRA standards to ensure only the highest-quality green parts enter the repair cycle.

Richard Brennan, Managing Director of REvolve explained “Green parts provide a more sustainable motoring solution, not only in helping to reduce carbon emissions, but also by presenting additional operational advantages such as reducing vehicle downtime and associated costs. Measurement is an integral part of our service, in terms of proving net carbon emissions savings, sustainability impacts, and commercial savings. Transparency and full disclosure about the carbon savings associated with green parts will help educate and inform clients so they can understand the difference they’re making by choosing to reuse parts over buying them new.”

Brennan continued “We hope that in the long-term, green parts will become the standard option for vehicle repairs. Carbon labelling in Ireland is the next step in raising awareness that green parts can reduce repair costs, and are better for the environment. But ultimately, our approach goes beyond simple measurement and reporting, as we enable improved decision-making, towards better-informed strategies in delivering superior sustainability performance and business value. ”

REvolve enabled the carbon emissions savings for An Garda Síochána through the provision of 551 reclaimed vehicle parts of varying make and model throughout 2022 from REvolve partner, Ted4Parts. The net CO2e saving of 38,477.35 kgCO2e is equivalent to the emissions arising from driving 100,000 miles in a non-electric family car; charging 4,700,000 smartphones; or the yearly carbon sequestered by 48 acres of forest.

Commenting on the results and rationale for sourcing green parts through REvolve, Mark Murphy, Fleet Technical Supervisor, An Garda Fleet Management said “Using high quality, safety checked green parts, rather than new parts, not only ticks the environmental box for An Garda Síochána, but helps ensure the quickest possible turnaround for repairs. We’re excited to see further carbon savings as we continue on our sustainability journey with Ted4Parts through REvolve.”

Commending REvolve and An Garda Síochána for the positive impact this partnership has on the circular economy, Minister Smyth said “Today has given me an opportunity to see how REvolve’s independent, technology-driven supply chain solution helps to streamline the sourcing of green parts for the automotive business. I welcome such innovative startups that encourage a circular life-cycle approach in their industry.”

All of REvolve’s defined carbon savings are independently audited and verified to ensure complete transparency. The newly announced CO2e figures for An Garda Síochána were developed by Earthshine Group within an independent study of the net CO2e savings associated with purchasing used vehicle parts via REvolve, as compared with purchasing newly manufactured vehicle parts.
