The History of Online Betting in Ireland

Gambling has a long history in Ireland, especially sports betting. And the most beloved sport embedded in Irish culture is undoubtedly horse racing. There are more horses per capita in Ireland nearly every other European nation, making them the fourth-largest global breeder of racehorses. Furthermore, many of the world’s jockeys and horse trainers come from Ireland.

Horse racing is the most popular sport in the Irish nation because of the frenzy of betting on races, so much so that studies show nearly eight per cent of all Irish citizens place a bet every week.

English Roots

Wagering began taking hold in Ireland during the 17th and 18th centuries, although there is anecdotal evidence of a small amount of gambling in the Middle Ages. The driving force for the rise in popularity of horse race betting lies in the acceptance of horse racing as a bonafide sport, complete with “industry” conferences and governmental regulations in place.

But the primary driver was the restoration of English authority in Ireland. Although the country was officially a British colony, it still functioned with a certain amount of autonomy. The nation was governed by powerful warlords who confiscated land from Irish Catholics. However, the warlords were less interested in regulating the population’s behaviour than in increasing their wealth. Consequently, gambling was mainly ignored and went unregulated.

Irish Independence

In 1922 the Irish Free State sprang into existence after a three-year civil war for independence with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) fighting against the British military. With its independence won, the new government set its sights on reigning in the burgeoning gambling industry.

The first modern legislation made into law was the 1926 Betting Act. The Act was later revised in 1931 by explicitly stating that any operation accepting bets on sporting events must obtain a license issued by the government.

The 1956 Gaming and Lotteries Act

This Act came into existence in Ireland to regulate the casino and lottery industries, much like the Betting Act of 1931 regulated sports betting 30 years earlier. Under its provisions, casinos were prohibited from operating on Irish soil, and lotteries were only allowed for raising money for charities and good causes managed by nonprofits.

Nevertheless, the legislators left a gaping loophole in the Act that permitted private “member-only” clubs that regulated themselves, hosted games of chance of all kinds, and provided slot machines.

The 2013 Gambling Control Bill

By 2013 the Irish government recognized the folly of prohibiting gambling yet allowing the existence of member-only clubs that, guess what? Provide betting and gambling opportunities to its members.

The Gambling Control Bill radically changed the gambling landscape in Ireland by regulating and controlling gambling instead of “pseudo-prohibiting” the industry. It also incorporated consumer protection provisions to ensure that games were fair and player security and privacy was protected.

Casino operators hailed the Act’s passing with open arms because it established the legality of their operations. The industry was limited to a mere 40 establishments that could be issued a license, and each casino was restricted to no more than 15 gambling tables.

The Act also created a public service fund from levies collected from casinos to finance recovery programs for players who succumb to gambling addiction or become problem gamblers.

The 2015 Betting Amendment Act

The most recent legislative initiative to regulate Irish gambling is the 2105 Betting Amendment Act, which stipulates that online gambling operators that accept bets from Irish residents must have a license from the Irish government, regardless of where the operator is physically located.

By passing this Act, Ireland addresses the complexities of modern gambling by having licensing requirements in place that are responsive to current gambling behaviours and technology.

Software That Helps Clean Up & Optimise Your Computer

A well-performing computer is essential as a full deck of cards for modern gamblers. From the thrill of the roulette wheel to the strategy of poker, online casinos offer an experience that’s as real as it gets, right from the comfort of your living room. If your machine runs at its best, it can impact this experience. Therefore, keeping your computer clean, optimised, and ready for action is paramount.

The Importance of a Well-Performing Computer

Imagine you’re at the digital poker table on jackpotcitycasino.com, seconds away from laying down a royal flush. Then, suddenly, your computer freezes. The moment is lost, and your potential winnings are forfeited. As a result, your laptop requires consistent maintenance.

Slow load times, freezing, and lagging can be frustrating, especially when you’re in the middle of a heated game. Whether it’s online casinos, multiplayer video games, or even simple web browsing, these issues can diminish your digital experience. So, what’s the solution?

Speed Tester

While a speed test doesn’t focus specifically on your hardware, it can always help make sure it’s running properly. With one, you can make sure your internet connection is as fast and reliable as possible. Some options even let you diagnose what exactly’s slowing down your machine, helping you to optimize it.

A Necessity for Optimum Performance

In digital technology, the presence of redundant and temporary files, also known as “junk” files, is a prevalent issue. As you surf the web, install applications, or update your system, your computer inevitably collects these unnecessary files.

Fortunately, there are software solutions specifically designed to tackle this digital detritus. Regularly utilising these cleaning tools can sweep away junk, free up valuable storage space, and significantly enhance your system’s performance.

CCleaner

CCleaner, by Piriform, is one of the most widely recognised junk cleaning software. It’s easy to use and offers both free and premium versions. CCleaner can clean up temporary files, broken registry entries, and other unnecessary data from various programs and browsers. It also features a startup manager, which allows you to control which applications launch at startup, further speeding up your computer’s boot time.

AVG TuneUp

AVG TuneUp is another powerful tool for cleaning up your system. It eliminates junk files and optimizes your system for better performance. AVG TuneUp offers features such as ‘Sleep Mode,’ which puts background programs to sleep when not in use, and ‘Disk Cleaner,’ which removes leftover files from over 200+ applications, browsers, and even Windows.

Wise Disk Cleaner

Wise Disk Cleaner is a free, user-friendly tool that cleans out junk files and defragments your hard drive. It’s designed to work quickly and efficiently, freeing up significant space on your computer. With its ‘Advanced Cleaner’ and ‘Slimming System’ features, it offers a deep cleaning that goes beyond just deleting temporary files.

Making the Right Choice

All that glitters isn’t gold – this holds when choosing the right software. Don’t be swayed by flashy ads promising instant results. It’s crucial to select reliable and well-reviewed software that matches your needs.

Consider factors like user-friendliness, customer support, and the frequency of software updates. And remember, while free software can be tempting, it often comes with limitations. Investing in a paid tool can provide a more comprehensive solution, protecting your virtual poker nights from technical glitches.

Conclusion

The digital age has opened up a world of possibilities, allowing gamblers to bring the casino experience into their homes. However, just like a physical casino must keep its slot machines well-oiled and roulette wheels spinning smoothly, your computer needs regular maintenance to deliver the best experience.

Google is helping more people stay safe with flood forecasting

Today, Google is announcing the expansion of flood forecasting coverage to reach nearly 80 countries, including Ireland among 31 in Europe. With the help of the Flood Hub platform, Google will be displaying flood forecasts which show when and where floods may occur to provide critical information to aid organisations and governments, and inform people at risk, in countries like Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium – issuing forecasts seven days in advance. Read more below to find out more.

Natural disasters, like flooding, are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change, threatening people’s safety and livelihood. It’s estimated that flooding affects more than 250 million people globally each year and causes around $10 billion in economic damages.

As part of our work to use AI to address the climate crisis, today we’re expanding our flood forecasting capabilities to 80 countries. With the addition of 60 new countries across Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and South and Central America, our platform Flood Hub now includes some of the territories with the highest percentages of population exposed to flood risk and experiencing more extreme weather, covering 460 million people globally.

Governments, aid organizations, and individuals can use Flood Hub to take timely action and prepare for riverine floods, seeing locally relevant flood data and forecasts up to 7 days in advance — an increase from last year, when information was only available 48 hours in advance.

Flood Hub’s AI uses diverse, publicly-available data sources, such as weather forecasts and satellite imagery. The technology then combines two models: the Hydrologic Model, which forecasts the amount of water flowing in a river, and the Inundation Model, which predicts what areas are going to be affected and how deep the water will be.

We’re working to expand flood forecasting alerts in Search and Maps to make this information available to people when they need it the most.

Using AI to help people prepare for flooding

In 2018, we kicked-off flood forecasting in India and expanded to Bangladesh to help combat the catastrophic damage from yearly floods. Due to advances in our global AI and machine learning forecasting models, in 2022 we further rolled out our technology to 18 more countries, paving the way for today’s global expansion.

Flood Hub is part of our Crisis Response work to provide people access to trusted information and resources in critical moments — also including wildfires and earthquakes. For over a decade, we have been partnering with front line and emergency workers to develop technology and programs that help keep people safe, informed and out of harm’s way.

In addition, to help support communities that are vulnerable to floods but might not have access to a smartphone or internet, Google.org collaborates with organizations like the Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Indian Red Cross Society and the Inclusion Economics team at Yale University to stand up offline alerting networks of trained, incentivized, and trusted community volunteers to amplify the reach of Flood Hub’s warnings. The most recent results from the team at Yale and local nonprofit Yuganter found that communities with local volunteers were 50% more likely to receive alerts before water reached their area — a factor that can make a life-or-death difference.

As we continue improving our AI-based global models for flood forecasting, we will keep supporting at-risk communities with technology to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Sustainable e-fuels could meet half of Ireland’s future aviation demand, create 10,500+ jobs and reduce CO2 emissions

A new report from leading representative body, Hydrogen Mobility Ireland (HMI), has today made recommendations on how the development of a domestic hydrogen ecosystem can facilitate the production of sustainable e-fuels for use in aviation and shipping transport. The report was launched by Minister Simon Coveney at ESB’s headquarters in Dublin.

According to the report, the process of creating sustainable aviation fuels derived from hydrogen (e-SAF) for use in commercial aircraft has the potential to create more than 10,500 jobs across Ireland by 2050 – equivalent to a total Gross Added Value (GVA) of up to €230 million per annum, increasing to more than €2.1 billion through allowing Irish businesses to tap into the global market.

The report makes a number of recommendations to enable Ireland to develop a domestic e-fuels sector, to include:

  • Feedstock security: Sufficient supply of renewable energy must be sourced to secure the hydrogen required to produce e-fuels, which could be leveraged through Ireland’s significant wind generation capacity.
  • Revenue certainty: The Government must provide clear and committed e-fuels policy commitments to reassure private investors and project developers.
  • Technology de-risking: To safeguard future investment, planned hydrogen and e-fuels projects must receive sufficient funding to ensure their viability.

Across Europe, there is broad consensus on the central role of e-fuels in transport decarbonisation efforts with FranceGermanySweden and Norway all fully committed to an alternatively-fuelled future – and this has been supported by strong policy signals from the European Parliament.

Aviation and maritime provide essential connectivity for Ireland, inward and outward. HMI contends that planning and action for the full decarbonisation of these sectors must start now. Alternative liquid fuels (e.g. biofuels and e-SAF), electrification and gaseous fuels (e.g. direct use of hydrogen in fuel cells) will all play roles in the full decarbonisation of the transport sector.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Simon Coveney T.D. said: Developing green hydrogen production at scale has clear and obvious benefits for Ireland – from creating a network of highly-skilled jobs, to decarbonising key sectors of our economy and society and building a resilient energy system. I welcome this report, which notes the potential for e-fuels to contribute to Ireland’s economic development, while stimulating crucial inward investment. Going forward, Ireland is uniquely positioned to export as both a net producer of green hydrogen, and as a producer of renewable fuels derived from hydrogen. It is therefore imperative that Ireland’s hydrogen potential is fully realised – and the Government is taking important steps to achieve this”.

Jonathan Hogan, Business Manager at Hydrogen Mobility Ireland said: “I am pleased to be joined by Minister Simon Coveney T.D., to mark the publication of HMI’s report on the role of e-fuels in aviation and maritime, and to discuss the economic and investment opportunities that lie ahead. Through strong policy commitments from both the European Parliament and across the Member States, it is evident that e-fuels produced from hydrogen will contribute significantly to decarbonisation efforts in both the aviation and shipping transport sectors.

Ireland must now signal its own intent in this regard through concrete actions; leveraging the country’s significant wind energy capacity to facilitate the production of e-fuels, allocating sufficient funding to planned and future e-fuels projects and committing to a defined strategy to meet EU e-fuels targets. Doing so, will enable the growth of a domestic hydrogen and an e-fuels ecosystem which collectively, can create thousands of jobs, decarbonise transport and other industries, and open up access to a thriving global marketplace”.

Minister Dara Calleary joins Statkraft & Microsoft to turn sod on energy provider’s latest solar project

Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Dara Calleary TD, joined Statkraft and Microsoft to turn the sod on Harlockstown Solar – Statkraft’s latest solar project in Ireland.

The 34MW solar project in Co. Meath, which could power the equivalent of almost 9,000 homes, is one of several renewable energy projects being delivered as part of a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) package with Microsoft which was signed last year. Under the multi-year deals, Statkraft Ireland will supply the technology firm with 366MW of clean energy from six of its wind and solar farms.

The CPPA establishes a Community Benefit Fund that will provide grants of approximately €1.3 million over the lifetime of the project to community-led clean energy and environmental justice initiatives to help create a brighter future, and make a difference in the communities that we operate in.

CPPAs enable corporations to procure renewable electricity directly from a renewable electricity generator and with these CPPAs, Microsoft is helping add additional clean energy capacity to the grid. The Government’s Climate Action Plan includes a target of 15% of electricity demand to be delivered from renewable energy CPPAs by 2030. This equates to approximately 6 terawatt hours of additional electricity generation.

Through its renewable energy contract with Statkraft and its other CPPAs announced in November 2023, Microsoft’s procurement will see the development of more than 900 MW of onshore wind and solar energy projects. The company is seeking to make a material contribution to accelerating the country’s journey to a net-zero future.

Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Dara Calleary TD, said: “Our future is both green and digital, and how we manage data will be a crucial to our decarbonisation ambitions. Renewable energy has a really important role to play in our fight to protect the planet, and I want to congratulate Statkraft and Microsoft on this important initiative. This new solar project has capacity to power the equivalent of almost 9,000 homes – Corporate PPAs have a real role to play in supporting Ireland’s renewable energy and climate targets, and I believe can be an important mechanism to support the wider system changes necessary in the electricity sector to deliver lasting benefits to households, businesses, and local communities.”

Kevin O’Donovan, Senior VP for Statkraft, said: “There is a growing understanding among the public of the importance of solar power to meet the country’s energy needs and security of supply. Every single solar panel installed means importing less polluting and costly fossil fuel while at the same time, bolstering Ireland’s future energy security.

“There is no magic formula when it comes to climate action and meeting our 2030 targets. It will require a range of rapidly deployed technologies and solutions all working in harmony to decarbonise our electricity supply. For that reason, we are delighted today to be announcing the beginning of construction on Harlockstown Solar.”

Donal O’Sullivan, VP for Development and Offshore with Statkraft Ireland, added: “Between now and the end of the decade, we are going to have to use all the tools at our disposal to make the energy transition happen. Projects like Harlockstown contribute to Ireland’s ambition of delivering 15% of new renewable volumes via CPPA while showcasing Statkraft’s experience of sourcing alternative routes to market for its renewable energy projects.”

Eoin Doherty, Microsoft’s Cloud Operations + Innovation EMEA Regional Leader, said: “At Microsoft, we’re committed to becoming carbon negative by 2030. That’s why we’re proud to be partnering with Statkraft to bring additional renewable energy on stream and help the Irish Government to achieve its climate action ambitions. The development of the solar energy project at Harlockstown is one of many projects that are coming on stream as a result of 900MWs of renewable energy contracts that we announced last year, which is a significant contribution to Ireland’s renewable energy corporate power purchase agreement target. As the country works towards achieving a more sustainable future, Microsoft will continue to partner with the energy sector and Government to accelerate the growth of renewables on the energy grid.”

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag opens Limerick office, launching a dedicated service, support and sales team and training facility to cover all of Ireland.

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag has been deeply rooted in Ireland’s plastics processing sector longer than any other global moulding machinery supplier. Since the mid 1960’s to be precise. With 400+ supported precision machines efficiently manufacturing billions of medical, biotech, electronic, automotive, engineering and FMCG packaging components yearly, polymer manufacturers can now benefit from the global firm’s new Centre of Excellence, IOM3-accredited training, and direct access to a responsive, dedicated team of experienced technical, service support and processing professionals.

Designed to serve as the polymer innovation heartbeat of Ireland, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s new registered Limerick office was strategically selected to serve the company’s already sizeable customer base. Headed up by Senior Support Engineer Kris Thacker with the support of longstanding Engineer Noel Davey under the direction of National Business Development Manager Darren Herron, the company’s expansion in Ireland paves the way for Sumitomo (SHI) Demag customers to leverage its physical presence alongside the Group’s respected market-focused intel, technology innovations, automation solutions, and medical machine validation support.

“Given the maturity of the precision processing market in Ireland, our new Ireland office provides us with the opportunity to serve our customers in the best way possible while building upon our physical footprint in the region,” comments UK managing director Nigel Flowers.

Adding in a permanent domestic service and support base is especially beneficial for market access and financial transactions. “Being able to trade in Euros for spares, parts and machines immediately eliminates the overheads and volatility associated with currency exchanges and inflationary risks,” affirms Nigel.

Longstanding advocates of all-electric machinery, in the financial year ending in 2022 Ireland accounted for more than 50 percent of new UK Sumitomo (SHI) Demag machinery sales. This states Nigel is testament to the successful partnership established with domestic machine sales agent and auxiliary material handling processing specialist TSM Polytech.

Putting into context the heightened demand by Ireland’s SMEs and multinationals for this centralised one-stop plastics processing service, R&D, tool testing and training hub, Stephen Glancy, TSM Polytech’s Sales Manager, comments: “Energy and material costs, waste and scrap reduction, higher productivity, repeatable quality and inventory management are among the many competitive challenges Ireland’s plastic manufacturers are contending with. It’s regarded as an advanced sector, with pronounced growth in the manufacturing of high quality precision products and components used in high tech industries like ICT, MedTech, automotive, and aerospace.

Tech Review – Pamu Fit ANC earbuds from Padmate

PAMU is a brand we have been testing earbuds with some time now and have been solid with their products over the years and they where on of the first to bring more specs and value plus an app for you money some time ago and since then that trend has continued since with other brands.

The latest buds we have in we have been testing some weeks ahead which gave us time to see what is on offer this time around and as you can see it is a nice looking new pair of earbuds with a nice small case and one of the smallest I have held in some time and the overall package looks great but what have we got inside and what do we not get. well there is a that goes on for ever to begin with which spec junkies like.

The case is small but the earbuds no so.. The earbuds will be not be for everyone due to their fixed set-up with built in wings and tips but the design is cool overall, I love the colours and the glossy white finish they have with the black tip and wing which is of course rubber and these are comfortable however it took a bit to get them to settle in my ears and here is where they will not suit all ears especially those with small ones and the company does say it will fit up to 70% of users so my assumption would be correct here.

Once I got use to them and the fit they offer a good seal from the outside world which is a good start and when there is no app access this time around I got a bit concerned but it is PAMU we are dealing with and the sound was good from there on. Bassy and deep is the tone you will find overall and by no means bright either, highs lows and mids are fine calls are also fine and no distortion or tinnyness on maxed out volume which is how I always use my earbuds and headphones. ANC of course is present and decent it must be said and they score it at around 20db which is fine for most.

The earbuds are also catered for the gamers too which many manufacturers are now accommodating on their earbuds and headphones which is a great move again and again it worked well during my testing. The controls are also great and the earbuds are designed in such a way your finger will setting nicely on the earbud itself when you go to change something and I had no issues here either.

There is no auto play or pause on these no wireless charging and no app but everything else is present so for those who are not fussy it should be a pair of earbuds to look at which look great and come in a super cool charging case.
