Belfast-based cyber security specialist ANGOKA has been awarded the title of ‘UK’s Most Innovative Cyber SME’ at this year’s Infosecurity Europe.
ANGOKA’s solutions for smart cities and smart mobility, which strengthen the cybersecurity and safety of connected devices such as connected and autonomous vehicles, have been recognised by both the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and Infosecurity Europe as meeting technology goals, seeing them win the award as the UK’s Most Innovative Cyber SME 2023.
Now in its eighth year, the prestigious contest open to micro, small and medium cybersecurity businesses registered in the UK saw 14 of the UK’s most creative and original information security businesses shortlisted and competing for the title.
ANGOKA’s unique and patented solution represents a paradigm shift by securing the device rather than the network. They provide an integrated identity and key management technology to embed trust in connected devices even over untrusted networks in areas including Critical National Infrastructure, Smart Cities, Smart Mobility, and Industry 4.0
In accepting the award, ANGOKA’s business development manager, Paul Ellis said: “The UK has a brilliant and dynamic cyber sector and to be recognised by your industry peers is a great honour and truly humbling. We’ve approached the important issue of securing IoT and machine to machine communication with a fresh perspective and a unique approach that’s increased traction in the market. We’ve got something different and the judges recognised our innovation and the future of ANGOKA. This recognition will help us continue on our upward trajectory.”
Andrew Elliot, deputy director, DSIT, added: “Cyber SMEs are the backbone of the UK sector, making up more than 90% of the companies in the country. They help drive innovation by bringing new products and services to the market, and that is why we are proud to sponsor this competition. Congratulations to this year’s winner ANGOKA, and all the finalists for making the final decision so tough.”
Nicole Mills, exhibition director at Infosecurity Group, commented: “This competition is a highlight of the event and an opportunity to spotlight innovation and provide a launch pad for up and coming cybersecurity start-ups. We’ve seen past winners really thrive and go on to achieve great things, growing exponentially and receiving funding to continue their growth. ANGOKA are a prime example of a company keeping pace with an evolving industry and spotting opportunities to innovate and meet industry demands.”
Infosecurity Europe is the biggest gathering of the information security industry in Europe, taking place between 20–22 June 2023 in ExCel London.
Wondering how to cope with a workload and find the time to enjoy your favorite games on platforms like Vulkan Vegas? As such, you have to multitask. Although there are many people who advocate against multitasking – it cannot be helped. The good news is that there is no need to beat your brains in doing several tasks at a time — there are mobile apps that can help you get the job done if you are a multitasker.
Split Screen Launcher
The Android platform has an app that allows you, by default, to do a split-screen phone experience. A split screen means you can split your screen into two, and each of them shows a different app. Think of it as a desktop computer where you have two applications running at the same time.
What can you do with it? Here are some examples:
Listen to Spotify and read at the same time.
Watch YouTube and scroll on social media at the same time.
Essentially, you can launch two applications and make them work simultaneously without closing the other. Spit Screen Launcher is one of the most popular apps that can do this. It gained popularity because of the straightforward user interface. The app also allows you to create a shortcut.
With the shortcut, you can easily tap on your favorite applications and launch them together. This process or feature is great if you have habits. For example, if you are used to watching Netflix and reading stuff on Reddit at the same time, you can create these shortcuts for easy access.
Overlays
Overlays is an app that allows you to immediately switch between applications without closing the other. What it does is enable you to quickly access important lists by tapping the home key of your phone twice. The list will then appear as a small window, which you can expand.
So, in what ways can you use it? Here are some examples:
You are using an app and need to provide a quick answer; launch your list and copy-paste from there.
You are playing a game, and you have to make a decision from a list, like blackjack. Use the app and then use your blackjack cheat sheet without leaving the game.
The great thing about this app is that the list you launch does not completely cover the screen. The mini-screen or list also has an X button that you can tap should you want to close it.
Lynket Browser
As the term implies, this app is a browser, and its main function is to make it easier for users to have several browser tabs open at the same time. You can use Lynket as your default browser instead of Safari or Chrome.
What is special about it? Take a look at these things:
Each link you click opens on a different browser — you will not lose the page you came from.
If you closed a window by accident, the browser has a record of that in your history.
It can load buttons in the background to avoid distraction.
The browser uses Android standard protocol. As such, it is the best match for Android users. Finally, Lynket Browser can take data from other browsers, which means you can copy your browsing history from another browser like Google Chrome.
Floating Apps Free
Floating Apps is a similar tool to the first one we discussed. Some examples of the things it can do are:
Watch on a small screen while searching on Google.
Use a calculator while surfing the net.
Find a contact while writing a note.
The thing with this app is that it needs some setting up. Do not worry, as the instructions are easy to follow. What you will love about this app is that it allows you to resize the windows you use for your multitasking activity.
The app offers a lot of configuration options. You can also make the apps appear like “windows” on your Android screen. We can say that this is one of the best multitasking apps, if not the best, out there.
Multitasking is the process of doing several tasks at the same time. Although there is data proving that it can be inefficient, it depends on what things you are doing simultaneously. For example, there is nothing wrong with watching a movie and playing a slot machine simultaneously.
Similarly, you can speak to your boss while working on an Excel sheet. There are also other things you can do, like uploading products on your dropshipping store and then researching about something while the upload process is going on. At the end of the day, multitasking works as long as the tasks you select do not interfere with each other.
Plum, the smart money app, has launched two new smart features for stock investors in Ireland. These features are aimed at improving customer understanding of their portfolio and providing them with timely information to make decisions about their investments.
Plum customers can now monitor financial instruments that interest them via ‘Watchlists’, before deciding whether to purchase them. This will enable customers to track stocks in one place, empowering them to improve their understanding of both their portfolio and the wider investment world.
In addition, Plum is introducing ‘Price Alerts’, which will allow customers to set target prices on stocks. The app then automatically notifies the customer when the share price rises or falls to the level set by them. This customised feature means investors can easily monitor all the stocks on their radar for purchasing, with Plum updating them automatically on price movements important to them.
Plum launched stock investing for Irish customers in 2022, and now offers up to 3,000 single US stocks for customers to invest in.
Elise Nunn, Plum’s wealth product manager comments: “Thanks in part to increased awareness of and access to the stock markets over the past few years, we’ve seen lots of customers join our platform to try stock investing for themselves. But what we’ve noticed is that these customers need a balance between automation and control to ensure they are able to invest wisely.”
“Both of these new features have automation at their heart, breaking down barriers that might have once made investing inaccessible. In the same way that you’d favourite an item of clothing while online shopping, you can now track stocks through watchlists and receive alerts from Plum when a set price is hit. This will help put customers in a strong position to make informed investment decisions and build their wealth.”
In today’s interconnected world, the proliferation of digital technologies has brought tremendous opportunities for businesses to thrive. However, along with these advantages comes the dark underbelly of cyber threats, posing significant risks to organizations of all sizes and industries. Cybercrime has evolved into a highly lucrative industry, with hackers constantly devising new methods to breach defenses and exploit vulnerabilities. It is imperative for businesses to prioritize cybersecurity and implement robust measures to protect their sensitive data, systems, and customers. This article delves into the pressing need for businesses to address the growing menace of cyber threats, highlighting the potential consequences of inaction and providing insights into effective cybersecurity practices.
I. The Expanding Cyber Threat Landscape
In recent years, the cyber threat landscape has expanded exponentially, becoming more sophisticated and widespread. Cybercriminals employ a wide range of tactics, such as malware, phishing attacks, ransomware, and social engineering, to target businesses and individuals. These threats are not confined to specific industries or regions, making organizations across the globe vulnerable. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the situation, with cybercriminals exploiting the chaos and remote work environments to launch targeted attacks. It is crucial for businesses to acknowledge the gravity of the situation and proactively address these threats.
II. The High Cost of Cyber Attacks
The repercussions of a successful cyber attack can be devastating for businesses, resulting in significant financial losses, reputational damage, and legal liabilities. The Ponemon Institute’s 2021 Cost of a Data Breach Report revealed that the average total cost of a data breach is a staggering $4.24 million. This includes expenses related to incident response, investigation, customer notification, legal settlements, regulatory fines, and potential loss of business. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are particularly vulnerable, as they often lack the resources and expertise to combat cyber threats effectively. A single cyber-attack has the potential to cripple an entire organization and lead to long-term consequences.
III. The Crucial Role of IT Providers
Amid the rising threats, businesses must recognize the crucial role that IT providers play in safeguarding their digital assets. IT providers offer specialized knowledge and expertise to help organizations fortify their cybersecurity defenses. These professionals possess a comprehensive understanding of the evolving threat landscape, enabling them to implement robust security measures tailored to a business’s specific needs. As seen at grapevinemsp.com, IT providers offer services like vulnerability assessments, network monitoring, intrusion detection, and incident response. By partnering with trusted IT providers, businesses can enhance their cybersecurity posture and stay ahead of potential threats.
IV. Strengthening the Human Element
While technology is essential in defending against cyber threats, it is equally important to address the human element. Employees often unknowingly become the weakest link in an organization’s cybersecurity defense. Phishing attacks, where hackers manipulate individuals into revealing sensitive information, remain one of the most common entry points for cybercriminals. Businesses must prioritize ongoing training and awareness programs to educate employees about potential threats and equip them with the necessary skills to identify and report suspicious activities. By fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness, organizations can empower their workforce to actively contribute to their defense against cyber threats.
V. Compliance and Regulatory Requirements
In addition to financial and reputational damage, businesses failing to address cyber threats adequately also face legal and regulatory consequences. Governments worldwide have implemented stringent data protection laws and regulations to safeguard individuals’ personal information. Organizations that fail to comply with these requirements face severe penalties, including fines, sanctions, and legal liabilities. For instance, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) mandates strict security measures and imposes fines of up to €20 million or 4% of global annual turnover, whichever is higher, for non-compliance. By prioritizing cybersecurity, businesses can ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks and avoid severe penalties.
VI. Building a Comprehensive Cybersecurity Strategy
To effectively tackle cyber threats, businesses must adopt a holistic and proactive approach to cybersecurity. A comprehensive cybersecurity strategy encompasses several key elements, including risk assessments, incident response plans, encryption protocols, regular system updates, and employee training. Businesses should conduct regular vulnerability assessments to identify potential weaknesses in their systems and promptly address them. Incident response plans should be developed and regularly tested to ensure a swift and coordinated response in the event of a breach. Encryption protocols should be employed to safeguard sensitive data both in transit and at rest. By integrating these measures, businesses can build a robust cybersecurity framework.
As cyber threats continue to proliferate and evolve, businesses must take immediate action to protect their digital assets and customer information. The expanding threat landscape, coupled with the high cost of cyber attacks and regulatory requirements, necessitates a proactive approach to cybersecurity. By partnering with trusted IT providers, strengthening the human element, and building comprehensive cybersecurity strategies, businesses can fortify their defenses and mitigate the risks associated with cyber threats. Safeguarding against cybercrime is not a luxury but an imperative for businesses operating in the digital age. By prioritizing cybersecurity, organizations can instill trust, protect their reputation, and ensure a secure future in an increasingly interconnected world.

Expleo, a global technology, engineering, and consulting service provider, is today announcing that it is launching progressive initiatives aimed at attracting women back to the workplace. The Return@Expleo programme, in partnership with Women Returners, along with an expanded leave policy and a comprehensive Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Programme, aims to empower female professionals seeking to return to work.
Expleo’s Return@Expleo programme is aimed at professionals who have taken extended career break. Participants will be equipped with the resources they require to refresh their skills, re-establish industry connections and pursue their career progression. On completion of the five-month paid career returners programme, successful candidates will have a view towards permanency within Expleo. This will help Expleo fill current job openings in the areas of Quality Assurance, Business Analysis, and Engineering.
Expleo’s commitment to diversity is further exemplified through its generous leave policies, which the company has expanded this year to include menopause leave, fertility treatment leave, volunteer leave and special leave relating to important life situations, such as a child starting school. Team members can also avail of fully-paid maternity, paternity, adoption, and parent’s leave. In addition, Expleo’s life enrichment programme offers unpaid leave for traveling, research or education.
Expleo’s award-winning Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Programme, meanwhile, has long been a champion for female voices in the workplace. With a dedicated D&I Committee and Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), Expleo ensures that all employees have a voice in shaping D&I initiatives. The company’s commitment to continuous learning is demonstrated through its annual D&I training for the leadership team and employees. Expleo’s dedication to gender diversity has been recognised with award wins including the recent Diversity and Inclusion Award at the Tech Excellence Awards. It has also previously been awarded the Best Large Workplace in Ireland.
Aimee Farrell, Project Manager at Expleo, who went through the programme said: “I joined Expleo as a Project Manager through the Return@Expleo programme in March 2022 following a five-year career break to stay at home with my young children. From the very first contact I had with Expleo and the team at Women Returners, I knew that my career was in good hands. They made the transition back to work very straight forward and provided support including webinars on brushing up your CV and job interview preparation, through to a five-month programme of workshops specific to my needs. This personalised approach helped me regain confidence and update my skills. Connecting with the other participants on the programme created a supportive community, offering shared experiences and valuable insights. I recommend this programme to any woman seeking to return to the world of work.”
Eimear Fitzsimons, Head of Recruitment, at Expleo, said: “At Expleo, we are dedicated to cultivating an inclusive and diverse workplace. We understand that many women desire to return to the workforce, but may lack confidence and feel that their skills are outdated – particularly when it comes to our fast-moving technology industry. Through our initiatives, we aim to provide the encouragement and support that career returners need to step back into the professional realm and carve out successful careers.
“Helping women to get back into the workplace is just one element of ensuring greater gender diversity in our industry. We understand that life happens and that is why we have extended our leave policies to include menopause leave and special leave, which can cover unexpected or unique events. We stand by our employees through every stage of their lives, continually assessing and enhancing our benefits to meet their evolving needs year after year.
“We have also taken measures including the removal of gender-biased language from job ads; implementing internal mentorship programmes; offering a flexible model for working parents, Expleo Fusion; and hosting impactful workshops and webinars. Our goal is to empower female professionals, dismantle barriers, and foster an inclusive environment where every individual can thrive and make meaningful contributions.”
