Car subscriptions could be the catalyst for greener mobility in Europe

Europe’s recent uptick in electric vehicle sales hasn’t been enough to reverse a year in decline. According to international car experts, car subscription models hold significant untapped potential that could advance Europe’s green mobility.

Electric vehicle sales in Europe increased in October with a total of 124,907 new EVs being registered, representing an uptick of around 2% compared to the same month the year before. However, the small gain isn’t enough to turn around this year’s negative trend, as year-to-date EV sales are still 5% lower than last year, according to figures from trade organization the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

David Bailey, professor of Business Economics at Birmingham Business School, says that car subscriptions could be key to advancing the uptake of electric cars in Europe.

– Car subscription models are a great way for consumers to ‘dip their toes’ into the EV market. Drivers are sometimes hesitant about adopting this new technology due to high upfront costs and fears about range and charging and uncertainty regarding resale value, says David Bailey, adding:

A car subscription model allows consumers to see if EVs fit their lifestyles and whether they are cost-effective for them. Car subscriptions don’t tie people down for long periods, so they can enable consumers to try EVs while minimizing risk.

Car subscription service :Dribe, which is owned by Denmark’s largest automotive player, Semler Gruppen, offers a fully digital customer journey and open-ended subscription, giving subscribers full control and the flexibility to adapt their subscription and vehicle to match their dynamic needs at their convenience – be it an EV or a conventional solution, says CEO at :Dribe Jesper Hill-Kjærsgaard.

– When the customer has the flexibility to choose, we see a greater variety in the car models that are picked. When longer drives or infrastructural uncertainty occurs, we often see people switching back to conventional fossil-fuel cars. However, our experience is, that once becoming accustomed to the many joys of EVs, people tend to stay with the technology, says Jesper Hill-Kjærsgaard, adding:

 – In this context, offering a selection of up-to-date EVs and fossil-fuel cars under a subscription model is an advantage, allowing consumers to weigh the pros and cons of different options and choose between them.

Untapped potential

Peter Wells, professor of Business and Sustainability and director of the Center for Automotive Industry Research, argues that car subscription services can play a key role in optimizing resource consumption in the transportation sector.

– When consumers pick large cars to meet very rare needs, the green transition of the automotive industry is challenged. The effect is that vehicles become over-dimensioned, which requires an unnecessary amount of resources to produce and maintain. Car subscriptions hold untapped potential for advancing green mobility by instead allowing consumers to change cars as needed, meaning new cars don’t have to be oversized all-in-one solutions, says Peter Wells.

Despite the promise held by car subscriptions, Peter Wells points out that it will be a challenge to change the automotive industry’s inclination for sticking to tradition. Out of respect for established practices, :Dribe focuses on uniting traditional business models with digital opportunities that can ease the transition to future mobility solutions.

At :Dribe, we believe that sustainable change begins with a deep understanding of the industry’s needs and requirements, which have been a focal point during the development of our concept and digital subscription platform. We leverage the extensive knowledge and experience that the Semler Group has cultivated over more than 100 years of strong traditions within the auto industry, says Jesper Hill-Kjærsgaard.

:Dribe is a digitally driven car subscription model for consumers and businesses, owned by Semler Group. Denmark-based :Dribe is internationalizing the company, offering a simpler, quicker and more flexible car access across the globe. Read more at www.dribe.io

MixRift launches exciting free Mixed Reality ‘arcade shooter’ game: Crit Attack

MixRift, a mixed reality (MR) gaming start-up announces the launch of its third title, Crit Attack: a new MR arcade wave shooter game, developed to satisfy the need of three generations of gamers* for immersive and engaging MR experiences.
Just in time for the holiday season, the game is easy and free to play, and is compatible with Meta Quest 3, 3S, Pro and 2. In-app purchases like upgrades and extra ‘lives’ are available to make the most out of the playing session, but players can also win these by playing the game for longer. With Cyber Monday just behind us, you can leverage Meta Quest’s deals and play Crit Attack with the family to defend your living room from a wave of monsters.
The combination of the game mechanic (arcade wave shooter), the graphics and the ease of picking it up make Crit Attack unique in the Meta Store, where the emphasis is on the more story driven, multiplayer, longer sessions. Powered by that growing market feedback for more ‘family-friendly’, less intense or graphic violence games, and a nostalgia for 80s and 90s games and entertainment brought to today, Crit Attack is a simple and casual game that anyone can intuitively understand how to use and play.
Bobby Voicu, MixRift’s CEO, commented: “By listening to our audience we noticed a nostalgia trend, driven by TV series like “Strange Things” or games like “Stardew Valley” and “Minecraft” with pixelated graphics. This enables the entire family to enjoy our games – the generation that first played games in arcades, the generation that played the early consoles and, finally, Gen Z and Alpha that can use their MR devices for a competitive and fun game.
The launch of Crit Attack underscores our vision to drive mass MR adoption and make gaming accessible to everyone by developing games that are easy for anyone to play, and deeply immersive. It’s the perfect gift for the whole family to enjoy – what better way to spend Christmas than uniting to fight a wave of monsters?”.
Key features that differentiate it from existing MR experiences:
  • ‘Friendlier’ look and feel: The only MR game where arcade wave shooters are combined with the kind of graphics offered, for the entire family to play. The monsters are cute and annoying rather than scary, appearing in waves – making it a very fun experience for everyone.
  • Accessible, simple and easy user experience: Easy to pick up and play – simply pick up a controller and point the in-game guns at the monsters that come and try to invade your living room; even the “Play” button is a button you can shoot. Though simple to understand, the game can be a truly tactical experience.
  • “One more time” experience: The wave arcade shooter mechanic makes it the ideal game for short gaming sessions that players want to experience “one more time” according to user feedback, as with each time they understand what to do to get more monster waves destroyed.
  • Low time commitment required to play – a more casual experience, where you can play for a half an hour or less session.
  • Hall of Fame leaderboard: Global leaderboard to track performance against the best players in the world, and be part of a vibrant gaming community.
MixRift’s unique approach is centred on game mechanics, developing and releasing games that resonate with audiences, quickly rather than investing years in a single title.
Voicu added: “While the demand for MR experiences continues to grow, largely driven by tech giants like Meta and Apple, there’s a clear lack of high-quality MR games out there. We’re in the perfect position to tackle this because our flexibility lets us dive into unique game mechanics built specifically for MR. We’re not just making games—we’re pushing boundaries to create new kinds of interactive experiences, changing the way we engage with this technology in our daily lives.”
MixRift has been at the forefront of the MR/XR revolution since its inception, pushing the boundaries of seamless integration between physical and digital realms to create ‘wow’ moments for gamers. In August, MixRift raised £1.6M, primarily directed towards accelerating its game development efforts. The company’s additional games Hell Horde (MR Survival) and Fractured (MR 3D puzzle) are available on Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest. MixRift has an ambitious roadmap ahead, including a new, exciting gaming title in Q1 2025.

How Technology is Transforming the Vacation Rental Experience for Guests and Hosts

The short term vacation rental industry is undergoing a tremendous transformation driven by digital technologies. It’s essential for vacation rental businesses to keep up with modern trends to enhance guests’ experiences. Technology can streamline several vacation rental processes, from booking to check-out. Hosts can maintain a competitive edge by leveraging the best vacation rental solutions. Embracing new technologies can help improve client satisfaction, operational efficiency, and financial performance. The shift toward technology is also influenced by evolving consumer expectations, personalization, and convenience. Succeeding in the competitive vacation rental industry requires hosts to invest in innovative technologies to revolutionize their property management.

4 Ways Technology is Transforming the Vacation Rental Industry

Vacation rental business owners must strive to create unforgettable experiences, enhance comfort, and add a touch of elegance to make their properties stand out. Here are some key ways technology is transforming the vacation rental experience for guests and hosts:

1. Smart Locks

Smart locks are among the top technologies impacting the vacation rental industry today. Their primary benefit is that they improve guest security and safeguard your rental property. Globally, the smart lock industry is worth over $2.7 billion, and it’s expected to grow even further. Implementing smart locks will make it easier to transform guests’ check-in and check-out. They eliminate the inconvenience of conventional key exchanges and overcome the nightmare of missing keys. With smart locks, you can provide each guest with a unique digital key and remotely manage property access, offering both convenience and security.

2. Virtual Assistants

Virtual assistants, such as Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa, can help guests find assistance at any point in time during their stay. These technologies can recommend exciting destinations near your vacation rental and provide useful information about your property. Overall, setting up virtual assistants for your Airbnb home can add a layer of convenience and transform the guest experience by offering quick and seamless access to information and services. Providing your guests with digital assistants can also help elevate their experience from good to excellent.

3. Vacation Rental Software

Another smart way to modernize your short term rental business with technology is to use iGMS’s powerful vacation rental software to optimize your revenue generation. This award-winning application can provide technology and market-specific data for your Airbnb property, enabling you to earn more lucrative bookings and enhance occupancy rates. Running your vacation rental business on the go with a mobile app can reduce your stress, as you can minimize your workload through automation. Automated messaging is a key advantage of using the best vacation rental software to transform your Airbnb property management.

4. Contactless Solutions

The global Coronavirus pandemic played a crucial role in fast-tracking the adoption of contactless solutions in the vacation rental industry. Hosts can minimize physical interactions and boost guest safety by utilizing contactless payment technology and digital check-ins. You can revolutionize your property management if you use QR codes and mobile apps to reduce paper printouts.

Adopting new technologies is vital for staying competitive in this rapidly-evolving rental property industry. The shift towards smart homes demonstrates the importance of using technology to improve guests’ and hosts’ experiences. Many guests cherish luxury, convenience, security, and personalized experiences. Therefore consider integrating the right innovations to ensure that your vacation rental home stays appealing.

Majority of Irish businesses have either adopted or plan to integrate a clear AI strategy

Ireland’s Research, Development & Innovation (RDI) sector continues to drive growth and employment, but without funding it risks dependence on foreign technology and diminishing competitiveness, according to the Ireland’s Innovation Index Pulse Survey, which surveyed over 500 Irish companies.

IRDG and KPMG conducted Ireland’s Innovation Index pulse survey in October and November and this pulse survey aimed to capture the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities faced by companies in Ireland active in Research Development and Innovation.

The research found that nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of businesses plan to increase RDI spending in response to challenges like AI and talent shortages, with the recent R&D tax credit rate increase to 30 percent continuing to drive growth. However, this is down 12 percent from 78 percent in comparison to a similar question that was asked in the main Ireland’s Innovation Index 2024 survey in May 2024. This may be a sign of decreasing confidence in Ireland’s RDI environment.

At the same time, it found that over 6 in 10 cited a lack of funding as the primary barrier to increasing innovation, while 43 percent of businesses identify time constraints and one third (34 percent) said difficultly recruiting talent as significant challenges.

The administrative burden related to the R&D Tax Credit claims and grant applications remain an issue with 80 percent of respondents reporting that the administrative burden has remained the same, and 14 percent reporting that it has worsened, while only 6 percent saw an improvement over the past six months.

R&D of green and sustainable technologies

Over half (51 percent) are currently involved in the R&D of green and sustainable technologies.  Many of those companies (95 percent) already involved in the R&D of green and sustainable technologies plan to further invest in the coming year. Only 2 percent of companies which are not currently investing in developing these technologies plan to do so in the future.

Adoption of AI

Some 39 percent of organisations claim to have adopted or are currently adopting AI with a clear strategy, nearly one third (32 percent) plan to integrate AI within the next 6-12 months, and 3 in 10 have little or no AI strategy and no current plans to adopt AI.

Ken Hardy, Head of KPMG’s RDI Incentives Practice noted“Investment in RDI is critical for long-term economic growth and job creation across the country. Notably, 65 percent of businesses plan to increase RDI spending, driven by many factors including recent increase in the rate of the R&D tax credit to 30 percent. Issues such as the high cost of innovation have led to concerns about decreasing confidence in the RDI environment. We need to continue to improve the attractiveness of investing in RDI to maintain Ireland’s competitive position.

Dermot Casey, CEO of IRDG, remarked: “Ireland is at a critical juncture. Business is eager to embrace AI and green technologies, but high costs and funding gaps are holding us back. Innovation is the lifeblood of our economy and the key to tackling global challenges like climate change. We need immediate action to break down these barriers. It’s time to radically improve Ireland’s RDI environment and claim our position as a global innovation leader.”

JustTip closes €1.1 million funding round to further expand into the UK

JustTip, the cashless tipping solution led by James Fahy and Ciara Walsh, successfully closed a €1.1 million funding round in September of this year. The investment is led by ComOp and Enterprise Ireland, bringing the total investment in the company to €2,100,000.

This funding milestone marks significant growth for JustTip, which has seen a 300%+ increase in business in 2024. Launched in 2021, by the now 23-year-old entrepreneurs James Fahy and Ciara Walsh, the Irish Fintech, with offices in Dublin and Manchester, continues to spearhead innovation in the hospitality sector.

JustTip addresses key challenges in the hospitality industry, including the rising costs, new legislation, and the need to automate core components in the business. The platform, used by over 600+ merchants and 13,000 employees in Europe and the UK, ensures compliance with the recent legislation change in the UK, as well as the change to Ireland’s Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Act 2022. These laws require employers to show complete transparency on all tips, gratuities, and service charges to workers; as well as providing a detailed breakdown of electronic tips and their distribution.

“All tips generated through our systems are collected, pooled, and distributed weekly directly to the employees’ bank accounts bypassing the employer completely. This ensures transparency and fairness, empowering employees with tools to ensure that tips left for them, go to them; while also streamlining processes for employers.” explained James Fahy, co-founder and CEO of JustTip.

Since launching, the founders, who have been named in the Sunday Independent ‘30 under 30’ list and more recently in ‘TechRound 100’, have brought the platform to new levels, winning ‘FS Challenger of the Year’, as well as ‘National Start-up of the Year’, to name a few. “This validation is testament to the platform’s initial adoption and exponential growth,” Fahy said. The newly secured funding will continue the platform’s expansion across the UK, foster deeper relationships within the hospitality industry, and accelerate the company’s product innovation and team growth.

“As the hospitality industry continues to embrace digital transformation, JustTip remains committed to driving innovation and setting new standards for excellence,” Fahy added. “This investment is a huge vote of confidence in our vision and will enable us to continue our rapid growth into 2025 and beyond.”

Speaking on behalf of the lead investors, Glen Magee of ComOp said “JustTip is our third investment in the payment and tipping space in 2024. The automation of payment and tipping is being driven by legislation and the increased use of non-cash payments. Where JustTip stood out in this space is the exceptional leadership team of James and Ciara. The company and product is a representation of their personalities; it is innovative, fast growing, and we got a feeling of ‘you have seen nothing yet’. We are excited by both their product expansion and geographical expansion, and are here for the long term.”

Karen Cohalan, Head of Fintech, Financial and Business Services, Enterprise Ireland, said:  “JustTip and its innovative fintech solution is a prime example of how cutting-edge products and services from pioneering Irish owned companies are delivering solutions for global challenges. This investment round will support the company’s expansion in global markets, as well as accelerating its innovation and growth.

“Enterprise Ireland is committed to supporting Irish-owned companies to start, grow and scale, and JustTip was earlier this year announced as the winners of the 2024 Enterprise Ireland Student Entrepreneur Awards. We would like to congratulate James, Ciara, and all the team on their achievements to date, and on this important milestone.”

Earlier this year JustTip expanded its offering with the introduction of JustTip Flex, a new mobile tipping solution developed for restaurants, pubs, and hotels offering table service. By enabling customers to tip independently of their bill, JustTip Flex enhances tip earnings for servers, and aligns businesses with the latest regulations.

Cybersecurity experts show biggest scam threats for 2025

Smarter, faster, and more sophisticated scams are coming. Thanks to AI, scammers are more efficient than ever, stealing money at record rates. Every day AI tools such as ChatGPT and OpenAI are used as scam arsenal, leading to around 13 million people in the UK to lose around £1.4bn each year.

Global scam protection leader F-Secure stays one way step ahead of cyber criminals, defending people from scams before they happen. F-Secure’s team of cybersecurity experts share the new threats the country will face in 2025:

New regulations for banks, telcos and social media companies who fail to prevent scams

Calvin Gan, Senior Manager, Scam Protection Strategy, says: “Right now lawmakers around the world are targeting telecom providers, banks, and social media companies, saying they should be held responsible when their customers fall victim to fraud. Australian lawmakers are pushing through a bill that will fine companies up to $50 million for failing to protect their customers from scams, and here, in a world first, UK bank refunds for fraud became mandatory after the Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) reduced the maximum compensation from a previous proposal of £415,000 to £85,000, covering more than 99% of claims.

“Passing new laws that empower businesses to beef up protection against scams is a welcomed move. Scam fighting is not a top-down only effort but involves everyone from governments to organisations and even individuals. Just like we’ve seen with GDPR in Europe forcing companies to take data privacy more seriously, new legislation like this would create an extra protection mechanism for consumers.

“Still, there’s no 100% guaranteed way to prevent scams from happening in the first place. People need to take precautions daily, especially on scam-prone channels like social media and messaging apps.

Cheap, easy AI tools will be deployed in sophisticated cyber attacks

Laura Kankaala, Head of Threat Intelligence: “Using AI tools for malicious purposes (like generating malicious and manipulative content) has already been evident throughout this past year. As we head into 2025, we are bound to see more sophisticated attacks that leverage everyday AI tools – like ChatGPT, ElevenLabs, or basically any AI tool that is cheap and easy to access online. The reality is that cyber criminals are abusing this readily available technology to fine-tune their scams and consumers must be better informed, whether that’s from their bank, mobile phone or another service provider, or by the cybersecurity industry to help educate consumers. We all play a part.“

“While AI companies do put restrictions on malicious usage, most of them are not very successful at it. They need to be doing more to stop the use of their platforms for nefarious purposes – it cannot only be left up to legislation to enforce boundaries for what kind of content can be generated. Bottom line, the companies developing these tools should also be held up to a higher moral standard.”

Multi-stage scams will become more prevalent

Joel Latto, Threat Advisor, says: “Cybercriminals have long relied on social engineering, and multi-stage scams represent some of their most deceptive tactics. These schemes often involve direct interaction with victims, enhancing their believability. For instance, a scammer might call a victim claiming they’ve applied for a loan. When the victim denies it, they are “transferred” to a supposed bank representative—another scammer, probably sat next to them—who proceeds to seek sensitive banking details. Malware further elevates these schemes, rerouting legitimate customer service calls to fraudsters or tricking victims into contacting fake numbers embedded in phishing emails.

“Such scams are effective because victims believe they are speaking with genuine, helpful representatives, which makes them more susceptible under pressure. This is something we’ve seen dramatised through TV series’ such as Cold Call, which has recently rocketed up the charts on Netflix following its release five years ago. Perhaps more popular now because scams are much more commonplace, and viewers are much more likely to relate.

“Until now, the scalability of these scams was limited by the human capacity of fraudsters, who could only handle a limited number of interactions in specific languages and time zones. AI is changing this equation. With the rise of sophisticated conversational AI chatbots, scammers can now mimic real human interactions at scale, conducting conversations 24/7 across multiple languages. Coupled with realistic deepfake audio, these new call-based scams blur the line between human and machine interaction, making them far more dangerous than traditional robocalls.

“To counter these evolving threats, defenses must adapt, and mobile phone service providers must act. Blocking call-forwarding malware, detecting suspicious numbers, and developing sophisticated audio analysis tools to spot deepfakes are essential. Equally critical is educating users about the signs of scams and potential red flags. Defensive strategies must evolve as fast as attackers’ capabilities, leveraging AI-driven solutions and strong collaboration between cybersecurity experts, telecom providers, and regulatory bodies.”

High-yield, high-risk: the rise of Bitcoin investment scams on a new playing field

Sarogini Muniyandi, Senior Manager, Scam Protection Engineering, says: “Decentralised Finance (DeFi) is a new blockchain-based financial service that’s been gaining traction and acceptance over the last year. DeFi refers to financial services provided by an algorithm on a blockchain, without a financial services company. It is an alternative approach that largely operates outside the traditional centralized financial infrastructure.

“As DeFi becomes mainstream, scammers will take advantage of anyone interested in Bitcoin investment and other digital assets, especially those that are unfamiliar with the risks of blockchain-based finance. By 2025, DeFi is expected to attract even more users seeking alternatives to traditional finance. The DeFi market provides loans, interest-bearing accounts, and high-yield investments that promise substantial returns, which can entice investors of all experience levels. With the rising popularity of DeFi, the total value locked (TVL) in these projects is projected to grow, making it a prime target for fraudsters who can steal funds on a larger scale.

“DeFi platforms operate on decentralised blockchain networks, allowing users to participate without traditional identification or regulatory oversight. This open environment enables scammers to steal victims’ funds and vanish into thin air, all while remaining anonymous. By manipulating the smart contract and tools used to automate DeFi functions, the risks of stealing investor funds are at stake. Some DeFi platforms offer investors with unsustainable, extremely high-yield rates for farming Bitcoin derivatives, only for investors to later discover they can’t withdraw their Bitcoin or that the platform has disappeared with their funds.

‘While DeFi offers financial freedom and potential profits, its open, unregulated, and anonymous nature also creates a ripe environment for scams – something every Bitcoin investor needs to be aware of in 2025.”
