Eight in Ten 18-34 year olds in Ireland have seen or experienced online bullying

According to latest research conducted by LADbible, 8 in 10 (81%) of Irish 18-34 year olds have seen or experienced bullying online. Currently, Irish citizens haven’t got anything legally sufficient to protect them from it. Leprechauns, however, were given a special protected status in 2009 under EU Law.
Dublin-based creative agency Folk VML have teamed up with digital youth platform LADbible for a bold new campaign highlighting the lack of online protections for Irish citizens by drawing comparison to the country’s most famous mythical creatures, leprechauns. ‘The Leprechaun Law’ calls on the people of Ireland to change their identities and identify as leprechauns to benefit from greater legal protections.
Although the stunt may sound as fantastical as the mischievous “little people” themselves, it is rooted in legal reality. Under the EU Habitats Directive, leprechauns are designated as a “protected” species alongside other flora and fauna in Ireland’s Sliabh Foy Loop area, giving them the right to live ‘undisturbed’ in their habitat.
LADbible’s research also found that 1 in 10 18-34 year olds in Ireland have personally experienced online bullying at least once a month (11%), and 63% of 18-34 year olds in Ireland believe online bullying has worsened over the past five years. The most common reasons stated for this is the growth in social media followed by anonymity online leading to worse behaviours.
Ireland currently does not have any specific laws concerning hate speech, making the country an outlier in the European Union.  Ireland hasn’t updated its hate speech laws since 1989, although there has been an ongoing effort to update them since the Dublin riots in 2023 – but so far this has not been successful.
Sylvia Julius, solicitor, said: “Ireland’s hate speech laws, which pre-date the internet, are not fit for the digital age, and lag well behind those of other EU member states in protecting citizens from online hate – in stark contrast to the rights and protections afforded to leprechauns under EU legislation that grants them heritage status. The government must step up to ensure that people online (as well as leprechauns!) are appropriately protected under the law.”
LADbible Ireland, one of the most engaged and influential social publishers, with 5 million followers across all social platforms, is uniquely placed to call for action – and keenly aware of the prevalence of online hate affecting its own followers. In a recent Instagram post, the channel revealed that 91% of its audience had witnessed hateful comments online.
Tom Butcher, General Manager LADbible Ireland said: “As a digital publisher, we’ve witnessed firsthand the appalling abuse, bigotry and hateful comments that our readers are increasingly subjected to online – with scant protection offered by hate speech laws which pre-date the internet. We wanted to highlight the urgent need for change in a witty yet thought-provoking way – by offering citizens the chance to become as well protected, legally speaking, as our national mascots.”
Karl Waters, Chief Creative Officer at Folk VML, said “Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, Leprechauns have protected status in Ireland, whereas us mere humans do not online in Ireland. Our ambition is to create a community of leprechauns to help change that. We are delighted to be working with LADBible on this crucially important campaign to change Ireland’s hate speech legislation.”
The call to action is led by an animated film that skewers the Emerald Isle’s friendly reputation and stunning scenery by contrasting it with the ugly online reality, the film depicts a postcard-perfect Irish landscape, before revealing that Ireland is “the land of a hundred thousand ways to spread hate online.”
Alongside the film, The Leprechaun Law will feature a pop-up law firm booth, on 26th March in the city centre, where passersby can apply to change their identity in person and sign a petition urging the Irish government to update its hate speech laws.
Anyone can sign up to change their identity to a Leprechaun here and call on the Irish Government to urgently review and reform Ireland’s hate speech legislation.

Personalised Digital Advertising: A Key Driver of Growth for Irish SMBs

A new study by the Centre for Information Policy Leadership (CIPL), based on research by Public First, reveals the crucial role of personalised digital advertising in supporting the competitiveness and growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMBs) across Europe with a key focus on Ireland. The report, commissioned by Google, surveyed over 4,287 SMBs across the EU (including 263 in Ireland) and highlights the significant benefits of personalised digital advertising for SMBs, as well as the potential negative consequences of restricting its use.

Key Findings:

  • Competitive Advantage: 76% of small businesses in the EU say personalised digital advertising enables them to compete with larger businesses. In Ireland this number is even higher with 96% agreeing that personalised digital advertising helps level the playing field, allowing them to reach specific audiences with limited marketing budgets.

  • Revenue Growth: 96% of Irish  SMBs report increased overall revenue over the past year, and stated that this growth can be directly attributed to personalised digital advertising.

  • Customer Acquisition: 62% of Irish SMBs believe that finding new customers would be ‘difficult or impossible’ without personalised digital advertising, underscoring its critical role in expanding their customer base. 41% of  SMBs in Ireland report that digital advertising has allowed them to find new customers.

  • Access to New Markets: A third of Irish SMBs (32%) reported that digital advertising helps them to market their products or services in new markets or regions.

The Importance of Personalised Digital Advertising for SMBs

SMBs often have very specific audiences and operate with limited marketing budgets. Personalised digital advertising allows them to reach their customers more effectively, expand into new markets, and compete with larger businesses. By tailoring advertisements to individual interests based on browsing history or set preferences, SMBs can achieve a higher return on investment compared to contextual advertising. 44% of Irish SMBs surveyed reported personalised digital advertising to be more effective at reaching their relevant audience, and 41% reported it as more effective at improving their return on ad spend, when compared to contextual advertising.

The Impact of Limiting Personalised Advertising

The study also examined the potential consequences of restricting or eliminating personalised digital advertising. The findings indicate significant negative impacts on SMBs in Ireland and across the broader European economy:

  • Higher Costs and Lower Revenue: If personalised digital ads were no longer permitted, 41% of  SMBs in Ireland anticipate increased marketing costs, and 37% anticipated decreased revenue.

  • Price Increases: 57% of SMBs surveyed in Ireland claim that they would increase the prices of their products/services if they could no longer use personalised ads.

  • Difficulty Reaching Customers: 62% of SMBs believe that it would be difficult or even impossible to find the customers their business needs without personalised digital advertising.

  • Job Losses and Relocation: 30% of surveyed SMBs in Ireland cited reducing staff as one of the ways their business would cut costs if they could no longer use personalised digital ads with 20% indicating they would relocate or reduce offices and facilities to reduce costs if they could no longer use personalised digital ads.

Suzanne McElligott, CEO of IAB Ireland said:

“IAB Ireland’s members collaborate to help advertisers drive growth through digital advertising.  Our engagement with Irish SMEs has grown dramatically over recent years reflecting SMEs’  increasing reliance on digital advertising as a business driver. The CIPL study’s evidence-based findings with 96% of SMEs  attributing their revenue growth to personalised advertising, reflect our experience. SMEs are a major contributor to Ireland’s economy and as we seek to protect Ireland’s competitiveness and foster economic growth, it is important that our regulatory environment facilitates Irish businesses embracing the benefits of digital advertising.”

Report Recommendations

The report emphasises the need for a balanced approach that supports innovation and protects fundamental rights. Policymakers should ensure that new legislative initiatives build on existing frameworks and avoid creating additional complexity. Extensive impact assessments should be conducted to evaluate the potential economic and compliance burdens for all market players. The focus must be on simplification: streamlining existing rules, ensuring legal certainty, and removing redundant or conflicting obligations. Organisations should proactively implement robust accountability measures and demonstrate how they safeguard individual rights when deploying digital advertising. Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) and Privacy-Preserving Technologies (PPTs) can be deployed to enable businesses to deliver targeted advertising while minimising data exposure and enhancing user trust.

Bojana Bellamy, President, CIPL said:

“Our research shows that digital advertising, particularly personalised digital advertising, plays a crucial role in Europe’s digital economy by supporting SMBs, enhancing access to content, and contributing to a positive user experience.”

Conclusion

Personalised digital advertising is a vital tool for SMBs, driving growth, enabling competition, and supporting access to content. By adopting a balanced regulatory approach and embracing new technologies like AI, Ireland can ensure that businesses and individuals continue to benefit from the digital economy.

Taking a Look at the Best Portable Gaming Devices for Every Type of Gamer

Gaming on the go is the ultimate hack for a great gaming experience even when you’re not at home. However, not all gaming devices are made equal, as each of them caters to a different kind of gaming crowd. So, if you’re trying to figure out what will be the best option for you, then you’ve found yourself in the right place.

Casual Players

If you’re someone who doesn’t spend hours upon hours gaming, you’re probably a casual player who sees it as more of a hobby to fill some free time. In this case, you probably won’t be interested in investing serious bucks into your device. So, our first suggestion will be to simply opt for mobile gaming. Nowadays, you’ll find a plethora of apps, ranging from RPGs like Genshin Impact to puzzles such as Get Color. And by choosing this option, you won’t have to spend a dime on an additional gadget as long as you have a modern smartphone.

But beyond playing games available on the App Store or Play Store, you can also enjoy a wide selection of browser games on your phone. For instance, casino platforms offer slots online that are fully mobile-compatible. This means that you’ll get the same high-quality experience spinning the reels on your phone as you would on a PC. The only thing you’ll really need is to ensure you have a stable internet connection.

Alternatively, if you still want to have a dedicated device for gaming but still keep it budget-friendly, you can look into purchasing portable retro consoles. Here, you have two options, with the first one being checking platforms like eBay for second-hand options like the Nintendo 3DS or Game Boy Advance. Many of them will come in with plenty of pre-installed games, meaning you won’t have to waste time trying to figure out how to install games onto it.

The second option would be to consider handhelds like the Miyoo Mini Plus. This is a more modern option, that you can buy in mint condition but specifically play retro games. Once again, you have the option to purchase one that comes with several games pre-installed. The main difference, and advantage, of this option is that it can play games from various consoles. In theory, this means you could have access to every retro game made for any console.

Dedicated Gamers

On the other hand, if you’re someone who prioritises gaming, then the initial investment for a portable gadget that would provide years of rewarding gaming hours will be worthwhile. And we’ll start this off with our current favourite portable console, the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Store is full of amazing titles like Song of Nunu along with console exclusives such as Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

This is also perfect if you’re looking for a hybrid console, as the Switch can be docked using the docking station it comes with. As such, it’s the most versatile option, offering a two-in-one solution. But if you don’t need a hybrid device, you can save quite a bit by instead purchasing the Switch Lite. There aren’t that many differences between the two variants, apart from the lack of docking and smaller size.

However, if you want an even larger variety of games and don’t mind missing out on Switch exclusives, you might be better off with the Steam Deck. In theory, this device will allow you to play any game in your Steam library. Alas, the quality may differ depending on the game you go for.

For example, games like Stardew Valley will run almost seamlessly on it compared to bulkier games like Baldur’s Gate 3, where you may notice a slight dip in quality. But a lot of performance issues can be resolved by simply adjusting the settings on the game. Overall, the positives do outweigh the negatives, so your choice between the two will most likely hinge on the game library.

Conclusion

If you’re a gamer, it may feel like you’re in the golden age of portable gaming devices. And with how fast technology is evolving, we can expect even more dazzling options to be released in the future, like the Switch 2. For now, whether you’re a casual player or a dedicated enthusiast, we hope that the above has helped you decide on the perfect device for you.

Maximizing Productivity: Tools and Techniques for Faster PDF Processing

For many businesses, generating PDFs for contracts, reports, and invoices is routine. However, inefficiencies in document processing can lead to significant financial losses, potentially costing up to $14,000 per employee annually. That’s why many businesses are turning to document automation software.

But which automated document management tools are essential for optimizing PDF processing? And what techniques can help you maximize their capabilities?

In this blog post, we’ll provide you with all the answers. We’ll explore a range of basic and advanced PDF editing features that can significantly boost your workflow and productivity.

Let’s get started.

Converting PDFs to and from other file types is a frequent need in various tasks. Conversion tools simplify this process, enabling smooth transitions between common document formats. Key features of this functionality include:

  • Support for various formats. Convert PDFs to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML, JPEG, and more, and vice versa.
  • Preserve formatting. Maintain the formatting, fonts, and layouts of the original file during conversion..
  • Customization options. Adjust settings such as resolution and compression for tailored conversions.

PDF compression utilities: Reducing file size without compromising quality

Large files can be cumbersome to share and store. This often leads to inefficiencies in document management. File compression utilities address this issue by reducing the document size while maintaining quality. Consider the following:

  • Lossless compression. Shrink PDF files without sacrificing quality or clarity.
  • Preview functionality. Review the compressed file before saving it to verify the result is as expected and satisfactory.
  • Adjustable compression settings. Fine-tune compression levels to strike the right balance between file size and quality.

Advanced techniques for PDF processing

Managing PDFs efficiently goes beyond basic editing and conversion tasks. Advanced techniques can further enhance productivity and streamline workflows. Let’s delve into three powerful methods:

Batch processing: Processing multiple PDFs simultaneously

Batch processing enables you to handle multiple documents at once, saving time and effort. Key features include:

  • Select multiple PDF files. Choose all the files you want to process together.
  • Apply actions in bulk. Perform actions like applying watermarks, splitting, or combining all selected PDFs simultaneously.
  • Automate repetitive tasks. Set up predefined actions to execute on batches of PDFs.  Convert multiple PDFs to a specific format, extract specific pages, or merge PDFs in a single operation.

OCR (Optical Character Recognition): Converting scanned documents to editable text

OCR is a technology that converts scanned docs into text. It lets you search and edit your digitized hard-copy files, opening up a new world of possibilities. With OCR, you can:

  • Extract text from images or scanned documents. OCR identifies text in scanned images or documents and converts it into searchable and editable text.
  • Preserve document structure. Retain the original formatting, fonts, and layout of the scanned document.
  • Enable text manipulation. Once converted, you can edit, copy, and search the text as if it were originally typed.

Automation scripts: Streamlining repetitive tasks with scripting languages

Automation scripts help you automate repetitive tasks when working on files. They speed up document processing while ensuring accuracy and consistency. Here’s how it works:

  • Scripting languages. Use languages like Python, JavaScript, or PowerShell to write custom scripts tailored to your specific document processing needs.
  • Task automation. Write scripts that execute predefined actions to automate tasks such as PDF conversion, watermarking, or data extraction.
  • Integration with other tools. Integrate your PDF processing scripts with other software tools, third-party platforms, or APIs to automate and simplify tasks and workflows.

Best practices for efficient PDF processing

Implementing best practices helps you achieve optimal productivity when processing PDFs. Here are some strategies to consider:

Organizing PDF files: Creating a logical folder structure

  • Create a clear and intuitive folder hierarchy to categorize files based on projects, departments, or content types. For example, create folders for each client, with subfolders for contracts, correspondence, and invoices.
  • Use descriptive file names to quickly identify the contents of each document without needing to open them. For instance, as an alternative to the example above, instead of “Document1.pdf,” you could choose to use “ClientName_Contract_Date.pdf” for clarity.
  • Ensure you maintain a consistent naming convention and file labeling for easy searches and retrieval.
  • Regularly review and update the folder structure to accommodate new documents and changing organizational needs.

Collaborative workflows: Enhancing team productivity with shared tools

  • Use a collaborative PDF editing tool like Lumin that enables team members to edit documents in real time. This means project collaborators can simultaneously work on a shared file online, regardless of their physical location.
  • Explore cloud-based storage solutions like Google Drive and Dropbox to store files centrally. This allows team members to access, edit, and comment on files from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Take advantage of annotation tools like text highlighting, inserting text boxes, and adding comments, hyperlinks, stamps, or symbols. These tools aid in feedback and review processes, enhancing team communication and decision-making.
  • Set clear rules for collaborating on documents to keep everyone on the same page and accountable.

Version control: Managing document revisions and changes effectively

  • Save new versions as separate files or utilize version control to track changes within documents.
  • Establish a clear versioning system, such as using numerical identifiers or timestamps for each document iteration to distinguish between them.
  • Establish protocols for approving and documenting revisions.
  • Implement check-in/check-out procedures to prevent conflicting edits.
  • Regularly archive older versions to declutter your document repository.

Conclusion

Optimizing PDF processing is crucial for saving time and maximizing productivity. Businesses can streamline workflows and minimize costs associated with outdated document-handling practices by leveraging essential tools like PDF editors, conversion utilities, and automation scripts and implementing efficient techniques such as batch processing and OCR.

Teen-Turn and PayPal host coding boot camp for global Technovation competition

Teen-Turn and PayPal recently joined forces to host a coding and app development boot camp at PayPal’s Dublin campus. This boot camp saw approximately 50 participants from schools and colleges across Ireland working with mentors and volunteers from PayPal for the global Technovation competition.

Teen-Turn, a volunteer-led organisation and registered charity, aims to support course decision-making processes, advise on education and career options, and promote the accessibility of STEM career environments for girls from underserved and underrepresented communities. Meanwhile, Technovation is a tech education nonprofit that offers interactive learning programs in which young people and adults learn how to use technology to solve real-world problems.

Whilst many of the attendees are taking part in this year’s Technovation competition, some of the attendees on the day were from previous years of the competition and presented the apps they have created and the social enterprises they have launched through the Teen-Turn Incubator and Accelerator Program – including HerdSync and UNdump. In addition to coding and app development, boot camp participants worked with mentors and volunteers on business plans to support the rollout of their innovations.

The attendees came from a range of areas and schools including Archbishop McHale College (Galway), Belmayne Educate Together Secondary School (Dublin), Coláiste Bríde (Dublin), Coláiste Nano Nagle (Limerick), Dominican College (Galway), Dunmore Community School (Galway), Galway Educate Together Secondary School, Glenamaddy Community School (Galway), Kylemore College (Dublin), Millstreet Community School (Cork), Mount Carmel Secondary School (Dublin), Mount St Michael Secondary School (Mayo), Mungret Community College (Limerick), Presentation Secondary School Warrenmount (Dublin), Salerno Secondary School (Galway), St Jarlath’s College (Galway), St Patrick’s Comprehensive School (Clare), and St Vincent’s (Cork).

Speaking about the event, Jacquie Murphy, Munster Co-ordinator with Teen-Turn, said: “We were blown away by the number of mentors in attendance to work with the girls on the day! The range of expertise was second to none, as was the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere. The girls were given expert advice, help and encouragement to make significant progress on their apps.

“Working with mentors in the STEM industry, including leaders such as PayPal, gives the girls an opportunity to visualise themselves in those roles in the future. Visiting the campus is an invaluable experience that many girls would not get to do as a second-level student in Ireland. We are incredibly grateful to the team at PayPal for their work on this boot camp visit.”

Siobhan Grogan, Community Impact lead for Dublin, PayPal, added: “We were delighted to host the Teen-Turn Technovation event at our Dublin campus. The talent and potential of the participants were truly awe-inspiring, with their innovative thinking impressing even our most experienced colleagues! Their passion, entrepreneurship, and determination, combined with the incredible support from our employees, made for an unforgettable experience. The future is certainly in great hands with the next generation.”

At PayPal, Employee Community Impact is important as a means of both helping the communities in which the organisation operates and empowering employees. Every year, PayPal employees make a positive impact through volunteering, charitable giving, and other engagement programmes. In 2023, PayPal employees contributed more than 118,000 volunteer hours in their local communities. The company’s ongoing commitment to making employee impact opportunities more accessible resulted in 67% of PayPal employees globally mobilising to support their communities.
