Tech Review – Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro

The Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro are quite simply put the best earbuds on the market right now and some might say that is a bit of a stretch even from me having the biggest collection of earbuds reviewed here in Ireland but I know what I am talking about when it comes to earbuds.

There of course is more earbuds to drop later this year and we of course have others to review but for now these are getting their well deserved first place on my list at the time or writing this review. You can see an unboxing and first look of all of the latest tech from Samsung here if you missed it.

The design of the buds is nice and comes with a nice clear top case that looks well with a nice snappy closure which will keep them safe they have a great fit with the right tips and a small stem with a pointed edge and we also get a light strip which some might find a gimmick, I have seen similar on other earbuds before and headphones so it is not new per-say. To set up the lights can be a task and has to be done each time you take them out. They do make them stand out especially at night.

The touch sensitive controls will take time to get use to if you are not familiar with such if you are one to wear them in bed you will find it a problem but that is me I use earbuds in bed all the time and due to the triangular shape of the stem well you can see what will happen.

Having said that after that these earbuds sound fantastic and for me the best out there right now and once you get comfortable with the controls you will be fine and you can see how they work in the video review below.. These also come with voice commands which is super useful and a feature again I have tried before on some Skullcandy earbuds many times and I find it excellent and keeps your hands free which is a bonus.

The app as seen below only work with Samsung devices but offers a huge array of features and it has a great UI with plenty of customisation and this is what users want when they splash out on expensive earbuds which these are but worth every cent, again we go through this in the video review below..

The Audio, OK I have said it these are the best you can get right now super ANC and Ambient mode clear audio and also these put you right in the center of what you are listening too, for example if you are listening to a podcast you now it is a podcast it feels like you are there same for movies you can easily pick out say if you are sitting in coffee shop or store you think you are there same for vehicles passing by etc etc they are simply great here and you must try the spatial audio and play with the EQ to get the best effects here do not just stick them in your ears without the app full stop.

Galaxy AI is here for your all-new Galaxy Buds3, ready to help you discover the details in your favourite songs. Re-engineered with an angled design to bring sound closer to your ears, you can feel the beat with a new 11mm speaker for strong, dynamic sound. Hear the distinct timbre and clarity in each note with 24-bit CODEC, giving you the ultimate Hi-Fi sound experience. Fine-tune the details with Galaxy AI enhancements for ANC and real-time translation that give you an edge.

Overall for me forget the usual Benchmarks Apple fanboys tend to gauge everything with, I use Apple products but to this date I do still not own any of Apple’s earbuds, they have decent battery life too which will vary on your settings and of course can be used with two devices at once which I am a daily user of and switching between both is a breeze.. These are the best earbuds on the market today but only if you own a Samsung device however they are still great if you do not own one.

Dublin Portal expands to include 2 cities in Poland and Lithuania

Dublin City Council is delighted to announce that 2 extra cities have been added to the Portal.

So now as well as connecting with New York, people on North Earl St will be able to see Vilnius in Lithuania and Lublin in Poland.

The livestreams will rotate every 180 seconds, beginning from today and forming a global network.

“The Portal in Dublin has attracted over 340,000 visitors since its launch in May and has brought a new lease of life to North Earl Street,” said the Lord Mayor of Dublin, James Geoghegan. “We are delighted to see the network of cities expand to Vilnius and Lublin and look forward to seeing more people enjoy the Portals experience.”

The Vilnius Portal is positioned adjacent to the city’s central station, and the Lublin Portal is located on the central city square, Litewski Square. “We are delighted today to welcome Dublin and New York – the next cities to join this unique project. We are excited that our Portal is growing in reach and popularity, opening up unlimited opportunities for communication and collaboration on an international scale. Thanks to the installation, we can now peek into New York’s Manhattan and Dublin’s city centre, share culture, experiences and initiate new projects together” said Beata Stepaniuk-Kuśmierzak, Deputy Mayor of the City of Lublin for Culture, Sport and Participation.

Having been at the centre of global media attention, Portals have emerged as iconic landmarks, generating billions of online impressions and attracting an average of 25,000 weekly visitors onsite in Dublin. On the Flatiron South Plaza in New York City, foot traffic surged by 47% over the 2023 monthly average.

Previously connected in pairs (NYC to Dublin, and Vilnius to Lublin) the sculptures have fostered diverse interactions across the cities, including vibrant dance competitions, cultural performances and successful marriage proposals. This next chapter of the Portals journey realizes the original mission of the project by evolving from two-city connections to a first-of-its-kind, global artwork that invites people from multiple countries to meet in a spirit of unity.

“We can discover how similar we all are through the use of portals, which connect us to a shared network that brings people from different places and cultures closer together. I hope that this idea, which originated in Lithuania, will continue to grow and connect the entire world, allowing people to better understand each other.” said Aušrinė Armonaitė, Minister of the Economy and Innovation of Lithuania

We are thrilled to finally connect all four Portal sculptures together,” said Benediktas Gylys, founder and artist of portals.org. “The Portals mission is about building multiple Portals, which together form a global entity – a bridge to a united planet that invites people of distant cultures to meet above borders, differences and narratives. It took us eight years to arrive at this special day and we are grateful for the consistent support from our partners in Dublin, New York City, Vilnius, and Lublin. The current four Portals form the foundation of a network that will expand later this year, bringing Portals to even more countries around planet Earth.”

Visitors to the Portals will be able to meet each other in real time across four different time zones and engage in this global artwork. The network rotation is active daily from 1pm to 8pm in Dublin/ 8am to 3pm in NYC/ 2pm to 9pm in Lublin / 3pm to 10pm in Vilnius. More Portal locations are being added to the network later this year.

Lero partners with Arm to build prototype car cameras for enhanced road safety

Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Software, has today announced an innovative new partnership with Arm, the global semiconductor and software leader. The research project, valued at €566,000, is designed to explore new technologies that will enable cars to see and react to their surroundings faster, more intelligently and more effectively.

A four-year collaboration between Lero and Arm, the ARMADAS1 project is focused on the development of next-generation car camera systems. The project will explore the optimisation of artificial intelligence to enhance how vehicles perceive their surroundings.

The research is being led by Professor Patrick Denny of Lero, who is Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Imaging at University of Limerick and an expert in automotive imaging.

The ambitious project is designed to help reduce road accidents by modelling advanced imaging systems for vehicles that are more responsive than existing technology.

“As car camera systems become increasingly sophisticated and AI is deployed across the vehicle, this research aims to explore the potential of smarter, more responsive imaging systems optimised for computers rather than humans. The collaboration between Lero and Arm could revolutionise the way vehicles perceive their environments by optimising cameras and sensing systems for AI processing, enabling cars to sense and react faster to their environment,” explained Prof. Denny.

“The automotive market is going through an unprecedented transformation and as part of this, we’re seeing an explosion in the demand for AI across the vehicle,” said Andy Rose, VP Technology Strategy and Fellow, Arm. “Bringing together Arm’s technical expertise and market knowledge with Lero’s internationally recognised software and computer imaging research capabilities, this project has the potential to drive exciting new developments for next-generation automotive vision systems.”

This research will benefit drivers, the public, and vulnerable road users. The project’s advancements have the potential to not only help make cars smarter but also empower chip manufacturers to develop innovative new products for this market.

Almost a third of businesses in Ireland reserve budget for paying ransoms

Expleo, a global engineering, technology and consulting service provider, today announces research findings which show that 31% of businesses in Ireland reserve budget to pay ransoms in the event of successful cyber attacks. The survey also found that despite most organisations tackling multiple cyber-threats on an ongoing basis, only a small proportion expect to fall victim to a cyber-attack in the next 12 months.

In anticipation of the launch of its Business Transformation Index 2024, Expleo’s analysis surveyed medium- to large-sized businesses across the island of Ireland, uncovering the impact and prevalence of cybersecurity threats. It found that the payment of ransoms, and the expectation of paying them, is embedded in many organisations’ cybersecurity strategies. In the last 12 months alone, 33% of businesses have paid a ransom to cyber-criminals.

The research found that one-third of enterprises have been severely impacted by an incident within their organisation in the last 12 months, while 31% have been severely impacted by a cybersecurity incident in their supply chain.

Given the devastating impact that cyber-attacks have on business operations and customer trust, the research found that businesses are preparing for significant investments in cybersecurity in the next 12 months. Expleo’s research found that the average enterprise in Ireland will spend €1.18M on cybersecurity in the next 12 months with one in seven spending more than this. Signalling what this could be spent on for some, a sizeable proportion (27%) of organisations reported that their security technologies and processes are outdated. Meanwhile, a quarter of businesses admitted that they do not invest enough in cybersecurity.

Overall, the survey pointed to an acceptance among businesses in Ireland that they will fall victim to cyber attacks, with 29% saying they anticipate this in the next 12 months. However, this is far lower than the proportion of businesses who fell victim to cyberattacks in the last 12 months. Half of all businesses admitted that their defences were breached by a ransomware attack in the last 12 months, rising to 53% of businesses who fell victim to social engineering attacks. In fact, of the 89% of businesses who said they were targeted with social engineering attacks in the last 12 months, 60% reported that the attacks resulted in a security breach.

The majority of businesses have also been targets of voice-cloning, phishing, whaling (phishing attacks on senior figures in the organisation), malware and AI-powered attacks in the past year, with success rates of between 40% and 50% across all cyberattacks.

Rob McConnell, Global Solutions Director, Expleo Group, said“Given the high success rates of known cyber-attack attempts, our research shows that if businesses have avoided falling victim to one type of attack, they have probably not been so fortunate with another. We have reached the point where it is not if you will be targeted, but when and how often. Every single business should expect to be targeted by sophisticated attacks on an ongoing basis. It is only with this level of pragmatism that they will be able to deploy the defences needed to combat or detect these advances.

“At the most basic level, enterprises must be confident that they are investing enough in cybersecurity and that their systems and processes are constantly being updated and reinforced. But that will only go so far in protecting them. Organisations must adopt zero-trust frameworks which mean even the CEO is not trusted by the network.

“This is the reality of doing business anywhere in the world today. Businesses that accept this can adopt a culture of openness that will remove some of the blame game associated with cybersecurity. In doing so, they will be able to work proactively towards a more robust organisation with the mindset and infrastructure needed to mitigate risk.”

Irish leaders concerned about retention of top talent & are not prioritising AI strategy, IMI Leadership Barometer reveals

The IMI (Irish Management Institute), a centre of excellence for business education, today published new research revealing that AI is not currently a strategic priority among most business leaders in Ireland.

The ‘IMI Leadership Barometer’ surveyed senior business leaders in Ireland from private, public and semi-state organisations across a wide range of sectors including technology, food/agriculture, utilities, banking, finance, professional services, legal, healthcare, logistics, construction and others. The research provides key insights into the attitudes and priorities of senior decision makers as they navigate a shifting business environment and the rise of disruptive new technologies.

Findings show that only 30% of business leaders currently consider AI a strategic priority. Many organisations are still in an experimentation phase with the technology, with 40% of leaders stating that they are testing the technology in areas of their business. A further 30% of decision makers reported struggling to keep pace with rapid advancements in the technology, reflecting a clear need for upskilling and education in the technology among business decision makers.

With businesses continuing to face the impact of a tight labour market, attracting and retaining highly skilled talent is set to continue as a top concern for decision makers, according to the findings of the Barometer. 36% of leaders state that retaining top talent is set to become more difficult over the coming months. More than half of business leaders (54%) believe that retaining talent will remain challenging in the next 12 months.

Despite these challenges, business leaders in Ireland are generally confident about their capacity to navigate change. Findings reveal that 84% of senior leaders are reasonably confident about their capacity to achieve core business objectives over the next 12 months. Only 4% of decision makers state their organisation is fully prepared to overcome obstacles and unlock business growth over the months ahead.

Leadership and management capabilities are the top business priority for senior decision makers, indicating clear awareness among leaders of the importance of strengthening skills in this rapidly evolving landscape. Future workforce skills/ways of working and technology from a business perspective make up the top three most important areas on leaders’ business agenda for the coming months.

The new research is released as the IMI announces the agenda for its 2024 National Leadership Conference. First held over 70 years ago, the NLC 2024 will bring together senior business leaders from across Ireland for a series of discussions focused on enhancing leadership skills and positioning their organisation for future success.

Speakers at the event include Deputy Simon Coveney, former Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment; Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland; Ann Kelleher, foundry technology development General Manager at Intel Corporation; Bernard Gloster, CEO of Health Service Executive; Siobhan Talbot, the former CEO of Glanbia; Vanessa Hartley, Head of Google Ireland; and Christopher Hartwell, Head of the International Management Institute & Professor of International Business Policy at ZHAW School of Management and Law. The 2024 edition of the NLC will be held on October 3rd at IMI’s Sandyford campus, with additional speakers due to be announced in the coming weeks.

Commenting on the release of the research, Shane O’Sullivan, CEO of the IMI, said: “Senior leaders across Ireland continue to navigate a fast-evolving business environment from a tight labour market to rapid advances in technology and heightened global competition. The IMI Leadership Barometer provides an important insight into the key challenges and opportunities facing leaders in Ireland in this environment and the actions they’re taking to prepare their business for future success.

“It’s clear from the findings of the Barometer that many leaders are still at an early phase of engagement with AI technology. Despite growing levels of experimentation with the technology, our research shows most decision makers have yet to form clear AI strategies. Enhancing leaders’ AI skills and capabilities will be crucial to fully harnessing the potential of the technology and understanding how it can support their business objectives. As these capabilities grow, we expect AI to accelerate up the business agenda.

“With economic indicators suggesting a competitive labour market is set to continue over the next 12 months, our research reveals significant concerns among decision makers regarding attracting and retaining top talent. Given these challenges, it is crucial that leaders evolve their talent management strategies to meet the evolving needs of their workforce from new ways of working to upskilling programmes and employee compensation.

“I’m also pleased to announce the agenda for this year’s National Leadership Conference, which will provide important insights for business leaders as they navigate the challenges highlighted in our research. By taking on board the advice of our expert speakers, decision makers can enhance their leadership skills and better seize new opportunities for future business growth and success.”

Ireland’s Digital Readiness Monitor Launched

.ie, the trusted national registry for over 330,000 domain names, has launched Ireland’s Digital Readiness Monitor, which analyses the level of digital sophistication of websites in Ireland, and has revealed that 36% of websites in Ireland have a low or very low level of sophistication.

Ireland’s Digital Readiness Monitor which includes websites using the .ie domain, as well as those using .com, .co.uk or any other extension, presents a comprehensive picture of Ireland’s digital readiness with research conducted by .ie in partnership with the Irish Institute of Digital Business, DCU and the JE Cairnes School of Business and Economics at University of Galway.

The Digital Readiness Monitor introduces a new national measure of digital readiness – the Web Technology Intensity Score (WTIS). The WTIS is comprised of eleven indicators that measure the digital readiness of organisations in Ireland including basic website; website with sophisticated functionality; websites with evidence of basic analytics, sophisticated analytics, social media integration, mobile optimisation, online advertising, sophisticated online advertising, internationalisation, selling online and cloud computing.

The Government’s digital strategy, Harnessing Digital: The Digital Ireland Framework, aims to position Ireland as a European and global digital leader. SMEs make up the majority of Irish businesses and the ability of Irish SMEs to adopt sophisticated digital technologies will be fundamental to increasing Ireland’s digital competitiveness.

The report reveals that 36% of websites in Ireland have a low or very low level of sophistication despite various Government grants and programmes to support digital advancement. A website and associated technologies are a proxy for an organisation’s degree of digitalisation, so this statistic demonstrates that SMEs’ websites are under-developed.

At the other end of the spectrum, one in four websites (27%) have a high or very high level of sophistication, showing there is considerable room for improvement.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke said Ireland has outlined its ambition to be a digital leader, reflecting the key role that digital technology does and will continue to play in shaping our competitiveness and driving productivity. The findings of this report demonstrates that we must continue to drive the digital agenda, ensuring digitalisation and technology remains a priority across all facets of Irish enterprise. My department has implemented a number of grants to support SMEs on their digital transformation – the Digital Transition Fund which will continue to be rolled out to 2026 is particularly supportive of SMEs while the Grow Digital portal is up and running to help businesses assess their digital needs. Together with my colleagues in Government, we remain committed to supporting enterprise in Ireland.”

Speaking on the report findings, David Curtin, Chief Executive at .ie said “The development of the WTIS measure marks a significant step forward in understanding the levels of sophistication of websites in Ireland. Despite the many Government supports in place, it is dispiriting to see that 36% of websites in Ireland have a low or very low Web Technology Intensity Score. For Irish SMEs, digital technologies present the potential of the ‘death of distance’, overcoming the limitations of location for Irish rural and urban businesses. However, there is evidence of a digital divide based on location, sector and size. In order to drive increased adoption of digital technologies by all businesses, but specifically micro SMEs with less than 10 employees, a supportive digital ecosystem optimised for SMEs is going to be required and we need the financial support of Government and key stakeholders to help make that happen.

Ireland’s Digital Readiness Monitor – Key Findings

 Online Advertising

  • Less than 1% of websites in Ireland make use of sophisticated online advertising tools which utilise targeting techniques to reach specific audience segments
  • The WTIS measured both basic and more sophisticated forms of online advertising being utilised by websites in Ireland

Social Media and Mobile Friendliness

  • The vast majority of websites in Ireland made use of social media integration on their websites
  • Facebook integrated into over 86% of websites analysed in 2021 and 74% in 2022 followed by Twitter (avg. 33%), Instagram (avg. 22%), LinkedIn (15%), and YouTube (13%)
  • Integrating social media into websites acts as a form of social proof, where users can see real-time interactions with the organisation. The motivation for more sophisticated use of social technologies includes increased access and reach to markets, cost reduction and process optimisation
  • It was also reassuring to see that Irish businesses recognise the value of mobile optimisation as part of their offering. While the percentage of domains optimised for mobile has dropped from 68% to 63%, the raw number of mobile-friendly domains has increased suggesting that Irish firms recognise the importance of mobile readiness. Google reports that for many advertisers, a substantial volume of website traffic comes from people on their mobile phones and visitors are five times more likely to leave a website that is not mobile-friendly

 Internationalisation

  • The WTIS measures foreign language support and foreign currency support as signals for internationalisation.
  • These factors indicate an organisation’s commitment to expanding its presence in the global market along with an ambition to move beyond local or regional markets
  • The Digital Readiness Monitor found that less than 10% of websites demonstrate evidence of international activity

Associate Dean of Research, DCU Business School, Professor Theo Lynn said “The Digital Readiness Monitor is a critical methodology and tool for understanding the digital landscape in Ireland. By establishing the Web Technology Intensity Score (WTIS), we can now quantitatively assess and track the digital sophistication and evolution of organisations across the country and compare it with other countries. This study not only highlights the gaps in digital adoption but also provides a roadmap for improvement. In a rapidly evolving digital economy, such insights are essential for guiding SMEs and other businesses in leveraging technology to enhance their competitiveness, both locally and on the global stage.”

Tech Review – HIFIMAN TWS450 earbuds

The HIFIMAN TWS450 earbuds are the high performance audio brands entry level earbuds which come in a small case and the earbuds are small with no stem, they are clean and to the point like the case that will fit in any pocket which is a nice pebble shaped case with a matt finish.

With more of their higher end earbuds to check out these interested me due to the price they ask for here and one would think do they skimp on sound but in short the answer to that is no, perhaps may not satisfy the true audiophile these pack a serious punch for the price and with no companion app on board to help out with the acoustics either.

You do not need an app or a full suite of features to get great sound these days and having said that the company delivers on sound here which is hard to believe.

So with no app or EQ to play around with what can we expect? Well lets begin with the volume it is great and plenty aloud and the crisp clear audio to follow is fantastic at the price point at the time of this review which is about 40 euro depending on region.

Highs lows and mids bang on queue nice bass and treble and not tinny sound when turned up to the max these simple blow your ears off at the price you pay which is not often you can say that for earbuds at this price from a high performance brand such as HIFIMAN, Like Apple they have had expensive audio products for some time and now have taken on the lower priced product and market and have delivered a class product here which in fairness there is little to complain about..

The use of audiophile-grade dynamic drivers, combined with the unique tuning style of HlFlMAN, produces clear, three-dimensional sound that immerses the listener in a world of music, movies or games. Enjoy an unparalleled listening experience!

As the quote above suggests it is true after testing these for a few weeks, where they do drop on offerings that might be an issue for some is battery life but then you look at the size of these earbuds they are small compared to the average but

Controls

You will hear a little noise with each tap so you know you have tapped the earbuds

Touch the left/right earbud twice to pause the track/continue playing; Triple click the left earbud to rewind to the previous track; Triple click the right earbud to skip to the next track; Double click the left/right earbud to answer/end the call; Press and hold either earbud for 2 seconds to reject the call; Press and hold either earbud for 2 seconds to turn on the Voice Assistant.

As you can see all other standard features are at play here and for a small package with ENC deep noise cancelling and their AI they make a pretty compelling pair of earbuds to check out..
