Review – The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 #Xiaomi #MiBand3 #Tech

The Mi band 3 came in a simple white box, without the hype you might expect, the Xiaomi was not visible on the box rather a few technical specs on the base of the box. The bracelet strap comes as a thermoplastic elastomer that is between 155-216 mm which is small enough and long enough to fit most hands. The band is light and slim at 8.5 g. The time is clearly visible available day or night. The display is an OLED 0.78in screen which allows time & date, notifications, weather, phone calls, messages.  The Mi Band 3 is waterproof up to 50 meters

In the box:

  • Main Module
  • Bracelet
  • Charging cable
  • Instruction manual

Product description:

  • Fitness, heart rate and sleep tracker
  • OLED display, view time, step count, heart rate – lift wrist light screen
  • ADI accelerometer and optical heart rate sensor
  • 20-day battery, 50 meters swimming waterproof
  • Upgraded pedometer algorithm
  • Hypoallergenic silicone band

The Xiaomi’s Mi Band 3 is similar to many of the Fitbit type products allowing you the ability to track exercise (steps taken, distance moved, calories burned), sleep (deep, light and total sleep) and heart rate (automatic or manual), over the past day, week or month.

Setup:

The setup in standard utilising the QR code on the supplied manual to download the app on your phone and pairing a normal. During the setup, the firmware is upgraded which is not the fastest but clearly visible on the progress on the update as a percentage of the process. This set the default language to English without any issues. Turning on the Heart rate monitor is not as simple as expected and set up messages to the band took longer.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 support continuous heart rate monitor which can be set to a frequency (1 min, 10 min, 30 min). This does reduce battery performance. Mi Band 3 is compatible with devices running Android 4.4 and above or iOS9.0 and above. The other features work easily and quickly.  The free Mi Fit app allows the tracking of fitness data, which can also connect to google fit.

Mi Fit app

The app has over a quarter of a million downloads with a rating of 3.5 out of 5.  The app allows the tracking of your exercises and analyses your sleep & activity data, multiple reminders & notifications alarm vibrate, notification alerts, SMS, WeChat, QQ, and email messages. straight to the wrist Idle alert.

Practical use,

The Mi Band 3 is clear on wearing the band with a tap on the screen to display the time, or swipe (up down, right or left to access menu) the OLED is clear and concise and clearly visible in the dark if required.

Conclusion:

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 is a continuation of the family from the Mi Band 2. The Mi Band 2 was excellent having worn one over a year ago. The Mi Band 3  is a great value,  activity- and sleep tracker which would be a surprise to see the quality in the product and features on this product in the price range . This version doesn’t have NFC function which is expected to be a feature in the new year.  The unit has excellent battery life and can be used in the shower, pool etc, (not recommend for the sauna/diving), the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 is let down having to use propriety USB charger that works but another cable to carry around. The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 was an excellent product ahead of its time and below the cost, you would expect to pay, Again the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 has great features.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 paired to the android phone easily and stayed connect whereas many other Fitbit type units often lost the connections. This activity tracker is a favourite of mine due to the cost, features and it works born out of the quarter of a million downloads which had used its predecessor experience.  I suspect this is a tracker to consider whether your first tracker or upgrade to an existing one. Don’t let the minimal cost of the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 put anyone off this activity tracker in thinking its inferior to other products rather other product have marked up their product out of proportion, overall within its price range, this is an excellent product well worth considering.
