About The Convention Centre Dublin

The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD) opened in September 2010 and is Ireland’s only purpose-built international conference centre. Now widely recognised as one of Europe’s most popular conference venues, The CCD brings an exciting range of international events to Dublin, and helps to generate valuable business tourism revenue for the local economy.

Located in Dublin’s Docklands, an area that is fast gaining a reputation as the business and technology hub of Europe, The CCD has hosted over 1,000 events in under five years, won 27 industry awards, and welcomed high calibre international conferences including the International Bar Association Conference (5,200 delegates), Euroscience Open Forum (4,500 delegates), as well as a diverse range of corporate clients including NetApp, Facebook, Google, Intel and KPMG.

The CCD is finished to world-class standards and incorporates the latest technology throughout. The venue features 22 multi-functional rooms including 4,500m² of exhibition space, a 2,000 seat auditorium, and banqueting facilities for up to 3,000 guests. In addition, a range of boardrooms and meeting rooms offer the perfect setting for intimate meetings and breakout sessions, while six foyer spaces flood the venue with natural light. The venue’s conference packages also include an extensive range of high-spec technical services and Wi-Fi for up to 12,000 devices.

The Challenge

With numerous spaces throughout the site that staff work from, The CCD needed a computing solution that gives staff mobility within the site and was flexible to allow them to work with clients.

“We needed something that had the portability of a tablet but the power of a laptop,” explained Robert Henderson, Head of IT Operations at The CCD.

The unique IT environment of The CCD means that technical staff can be managing an SME scale device number that can quickly escalate to a large corporate-sized fleet when hosting an event.  “When things scale and contract this quickly we need to know we can rely on our own devices so we can focus on the hosted event. Resilience is also a key requirement” Henderson adds.

Staff at The CCD are engaged with liaising with clients across the site in event management and sales roles. “When staff are working with clients, they need to give them a full digital experience using multimedia. Tablets allow for a shared experience but can sometimes be under-powered for other applications.  It’s not practical on a site this large to have staff using both devices simultaneously”.

With the help of Mark Carroll from I.T. Group, a workshop was organised for the IT Staff at The CCD to allow them to get a ‘hands-on’ feel for the full range of Toshiba notebooks. Upon completion of the workshop a general consensus was reached as to what models The CCD would like to select for further evaluation and ultimate deployment.

In addition to the requirement for the staff of The CCD to have a powerful, portable device for their day-to-day interactions with clients throughout the centre, The CCD has also been outfitted with powerful Toshiba Satellite Pro R50-B laptops in all of their conference rooms for public hire, adding to the ‘wall to wall’ implementation of Toshiba’s business computing solution.

A Svelte, Stylish and Sound Solution

The CCD selected the Toshiba Portégé Z10t as the best choice for its mobile staff. The fully detachable device combines powerful performance with tablet flexibility. Equally suitable for giving presentations, taking notes in meetings, or for completing day-to-day tasks, it is lightweight both when detached (900 g) and combined (1.5 kg). This lightweight body combined with a generous battery life made it the perfect choice for staff mobility.

The Z10t boasts an Intel® Core™ i5 processor, which combined with a fast 256GB SSD makes it a high performing device. This coupled with the IPS Full HD non-reflective touch display makes it ideal for handling demanding multimedia tasks. Just as important for its role in client-facing work is the modern Ultrabook™ aesthetic exhibited in the Z10t’s design values.

“This was the only properly professional class convertible that we could find in the Irish market that would service our requirements. It really delivers in terms of performance and our staff have taken to it enthusiastically,” said Henderson.

“Mark Carroll at the I.T. Group was great at understanding our requirements from the outset and we’re extremely happy with the business computing solution Toshiba have provided our technical team and conference rooms. We look forward to dealing with Toshiba on IT solutions for The Convention Centre Dublin in the future.”
