Toshiba Ireland today announces its sponsorship of the Giga Spiders category of the Eircom Junior Spiders competition. The awards, now in their sixth year, were established to highlight how primary and post-primary students embrace the internet, and to mark the innovative ways it is used both in school and in student’s daily lives.

The awards encourage innovation and an engagement with programming and web development for children of all ages. The Giga Spiders category was open to 1st to 3rd year secondary students, and the finalists were announced on 28th March 2015.

The Giga finalists represent a diverse range of projects that belie the ages of the entrants. They include blogs, a coder dojo and a fully functioning web hosting business.

“What’s incredible about these projects is that they are produced by children who not only understand how programming works, but also how it can be applied practically. This type of outlook deserves to be rewarded and fostered, as it puts young people on a fruitful career path, even before they go on to third level”, said Owen McGuinness, Retail Channel Manager for Toshiba Ireland.

Winners from the Giga category will each receive one of Toshiba’s new Chromebook 2 laptops.

The award ceremony will take place on Monday 20th April 2015 at Facebook’s HQ in Dublin.

Further information on each of the shortlisted nominations can be found at www.juniorspiders.ie.
